2 SUMMER RACE WEEKS 2012 SUMMER REGATTAS photo: David Harding/Sailing Scenes Summer regattas can offer a really rewarding way to spend a holiday, and there are plenty to choose from to suit all ages and every kind of sailing. Entry fees in some cases start at just a few pounds, and the emphasis is usually on fun as well as racing most regattas combine great on-the-water management with a fantastic on-shore social scene. You can be as competitive as you like, or simply make it a great holiday. For families, summer regattas are an ideal opportunity for enthusing children, and a number of clubs provide events specifically for youth and junior sailors, in addition to Planning your summer? Check out Y&Y s essential guide to the major multiclass summer regatta weeks in Britain and Europe their main summer race week. This year s listings aim to cover the key multi-class summer regattas in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands, plus a couple in Europe, but as ever rely on organisers submitting their information. In addition to using our guide, it is well worth keeping an eye on what is happening in your area, or at clubs in other locations you might plan to visit. This year the combination of the 2012 Olympics and the Queen s Diamond Jubilee mean there will be one-off regattas in addition to the usual annual fixtures. Sailing clubs on the Isle of Wight, for example, have joined forces to organise a special Diamond Jubilee regatta from June 2-4, which will include keelboat and dinghy racing, invitational match racing and team racing, plus of course lots of onshore parties. With so many events to choose from and so much to celebrate in 2012 there s never been a better year to combine time off with time on the water. You can be as competitive as you like or simply make it a great holiday 72 Yachts & Yachting May 2012
