1 Charlie Bangs Apple Blossom Memorial Race 2017 HHYC Race Results 2017 With only one entry for the race, the Charlie Bangs was not held in 2017 (nor in 2016). Thanks to Art for Race Committee preparations. Keg Classic 2017 The Keg Classic Race was held Saturday, July 8, 2017 under initially threatening skies. A heavy rain with scattered lightning a half hour before the skipper s meeting caused a 15 minute delay in start. Fortunately the weather improved with scattered clouds and wind varying 7 to 14 knots from the NW. 3 boats participated in the two races details are in the table below. Velocity Girl used the opportunity to practice for EYC next week. Congratulations to Red Head and crew for the low score. Over all place is determined by the lowest sum of the two finishes. The traditional round of drafts was shared by many of the participants with thanks to Phil for opening the bar. 2 Women s Challenge Cup Results After several years absence, the Women s Challenge Cup returned on July 22 with six women participating as skippers or crew. Four Typhoons were made available by their owners, permitting one design racing in boats perfectly matched to the race and weather conditions. Unfortunately one Typhoon, Osprey, had a fouled jib halyard and had to retire before the start. Five short course races allowed rotations of skippers where desired. Scoring was based on place in the best two finishes for each skipper. The wind was SW at 3 6 kts. On Punky were Jane and Lee Cagwin, on Twister Noreen Mallabar, Mary Ellen and Steve Woiler, and on Ella, Nancy Siemon, Corlis Kaiser, and Suzanne Gervais. Jane and Noreen were tied with two firsts each (best two races), with Jane breaking the tie with a third first place. Mary Ellen s two second place finishes gave her third place overall with Nancy following in fourth place. All competitors finished close to one another with two close photo finishes for second and third in those races. The others chose to crew only. All competitors were in enthusiastic agreement that they would like to hold several such events each year so look forward to more one design racing with our female members. 3 Commodore s Cup The Commodore s Cup was held on August 12, 2017 with fair winds kts from the south. 9 boats participated with a spread in ratings from 54 to 310. On the high end we welcomed two Typhoons and a Precision 165, and an Escow on the low end. Canceled this year. Duck Island Race The morning of August 26 winds were light to non existent. Four boats registered (Velocity Girl, E motion, Fast Attack and Redhead) and prepared for a 10 AM start. With the hope that winds would be reasonable on the lake (Prince Edward buoy was reporting 6kts Gst 8) a Stoney Calf Island course with set with understanding that shortening to a reverse outer triangle would take place if the first boat hadn t reached the Stony Island buoy (R 2 ) by 1 PM. After a postponement, a light NE breeze seemed to be filling in and the fleet started at 10:40. While the boats were moving in the 3 4 kt breeze, the pernicious wind shifts kept the fleet sailing back and forth in Henderson Bay without making appreciable progress toward Lime Barrel. E motion s tactician and expert wind sniffer, Rosemary, found a path that set her on a direct tack toward Lime Barrel quite ahead of the others. Once out on the lake, winds were only slightly better, 4 6 kts and still somewhat variable. The course was immediately shortened. In hind sight, the normal outer triangle (Point Peninsula, Stony Is.), would have been preferred even though the first mark was not consistent with the original course. Fast Attack took line honors, crossing the finish line at 5:17 PM. E motion ended the race, crossing at 5:53. Redhead chose to take a DNF after the experience in the bay. With the mixture of two full sail boats and two white sail, the SA chair was face with a decision: score in two fleets, in which case neither would meet HHYC s traditional requirements for three boats to constitute a race; or score together, not following PHRF normal procedures. The SA chair chose the latter, though with caveat that this should not be taken as a precedent. Detailed results are below.

HHYC was asked to run the Regatta along with the Summerville Memorial on September 9. Three boats from CYC and three from HHYC participated. Boats and skippers are listed in the Sailwave summary below. Shady Lady, skippered by Gary Phillips from SYC(?) registered sailing with white sails and without PHRF certificate, started the first race but did not finish. Winds were generally light, from 4 to 7 knots, mostly from North. We were very fortunate to have Bill Topping (Brockport, NY) serve as PRO. In addition the use of Tom Bryant s quite comfortable Tiara 31 Degrees of Freedom, and considerably less comfortable but very busy Boston Whaler from WSP made for an active course with several length and alignment changes. After a brief postponement while analyzing the wind, three races were run with windward leeward center start courses starting at about 6, decreasing to 4 nm total length (two circuits) as the wind dropped. Suzanne Gervais and Judi Sanders helped with registration and after race pizzas, and Claudia came in to tend bar on very short notice. Nicole Paratore, Jefferson County Hospice Director of Community Relations was on site, assisting with registration and awards.
