Introduction Tourism is a very important sector of Cyprus economy, attracting millions of tourists every year and providing economic growth and employment for the country Contributes 10% of GDP (2009) and offers jobs In 2013 the number of visitors in Cyprus was 2,4 million while the total revenue was 2,0 billion euros
Introduction 90% of the tourists visit Cyprus for leisure purposes (e.g. sun and sea, sports, culture etc.) while the rest 10% for business purposes (e.g. conferences, meetings etc.) and for visiting relatives and friends In 2010, 89% of the tourist arrivals recorded in Cyprus resided in the coastal cities of Cyprus, 5.9% in Nicosia and only 0.2% stayed at the Hill Resorts The majority of tourists visit Cyprus the period May October. Highest shares of the year recorded in July and August (13-14%) 2010 Source: CYSTAT Source: CYSTAT
Tourism and climate Climate has a strong influence on the tourism and recreation sector and in some regions represents the natural resource on which the tourism industry is predicated. Tourism is sensitive to a range of climate variables such as temperature, hours of sunshine, precipitation, humidity, and storm intensity and frequency The projected climate warming in Cyprus, in other words, the increase in air temperature as well as the increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events (heat waves) may have an effect on the tourism industry of Cyprus

Specific indicators for assessing the impacts on tourism Tourism Climate Index - TCI Represent tourism activities mainly sightseeing, nature-based tourism, religious tourism etc. Beach Climate Index - BCI Represent only beach tourism (90% of Cyprus Tourism) Integration into a single index all the climatic elements relevant to the tourism experience
Tourism Climatic Index - TCI Devised by Mieczkowski in 1985 TCI is based on the notion of human comfort, and consists of five subindices, each represented by one or two daily climate variables The index is calculated as follows: TCI = 2(4CID + CIA + 2R + 2S + W) where CID = daytime comfort index CIA = daily comfort index R = precipitation index S = sunshine index W = wind speed index With an optimal rating for each variable of 5, the maximum value of the index is 100
Weighting scheme Sub- Index Daily Variables Climate Influence on TCI Daytime Comfort Index (CID) Daily Comfort Index (CIA) Maximum daily temperature & minimum daily relative humidity Mean daily temperature and relative humidity Represents thermal comfort when maximum activity occurs Represents thermal comfort over the full 24h period (including sleeping hours) Weighting in TCI 40% 10% Precipitation (P) Total precipitation Reflects the negative impact that this element has on outdoor activities 20% Sunshine (S) Total hours of sunshine Rated as positive for tourism-but can be negative because of the risk of sunburn and added discomfort on hot days 20% Wind (W) Average wind speed Variable effect depending on temperature (evaporative cooling effect in hot climates rated positively, while wind chill in cold climates rated negatively) 10%

Beach Climate Index - BCI Based on the work by Mieczkowski, Morgan et al. (2000) developed a climate index to assess the climate suitability of coastal destinations specific for beach recreation. It consists of four sub-indices each represented by one or two daily climate variables The index is calculated as follows: BCI = 0.18TS P W S where TS = thermal sensation P = precipitation W = wind S = sunshine After weighting, add up to a maximum score of 100 (ideal conditions). The weights are based on the importance that the beach users attached to each of the four components
Weighting scheme of BCI Sub- Index Daily Variables Climate Influence on BCI Thermal Sensation (Ts) Maximum daily temperature, minimum daily relative humidity, proportion of daylight hours in which there is sunshine & wind speed Represents beach users preferred thermal sensation Weighting in BCI 18% Precipitation (P) Total precipitation Reflects the negative impact that this element has on outdoor activities 29% Sunshine (S) Total hours of sunshine Rated as positive for tourism-but can be negative because of the risk of sunburn and added discomfort on hot days 26% Wind (W) Average wind speed Occurrence of high wind on beaches can cause annoyance in terms of disruption of personal belongings (so that they have to be secured or weighted down) and indirect effects of blowing sand 27%

Conclusions The extreme warming which is projected for the distant future in Cyprus (mainly during summer) will have negative impacts on tourism activities such as sightseeing, medical tourism, alternative tourism etc. Such tourism activities seem to be benefited before and after summer in other words during spring and autumn where warming and extreme events will be not so intense. Regarding beach tourism, it doesn t appear to be negatively affected by the anticipated warming even during summer. In addition, apart from summer, both spring and autumn are expected to provide very good conditions for beach tourist activities.
