2 Merits The first form of ziyarah to be mentioned hereinafter is the famous ziyarah of `Ashura', which can be said at the tomb of Imam al- Husayn (A) and also from far distance. The following is the elaborate report of this form of ziyarah, as has been narrated by Shaykh Abu-Ja`far al-tusi in his book of al-misbah: Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Buzaygh has reported on the authority of Salih ibn `Aqabah on the authority of his father on the authority of Imam Muhammad al-baqir (`a) who said, Whoever visits al-husayn ibn `Ali (A) on the tenth day of Muharram and remains there weeping, will meet Almighty Allah on the day of meeting Him having the reward of two thousand times of going on Hajj, two thousand times of going on `umrah, as well as the reward of one who has participated with the Holy Messenger of Allah and with the Holy Imams in two thousand campaigns. The reporter asked, May Allah accept me as ransom for you! What should one who lives in remote regions and cannot come to the tomb on that day do?

3 Merits The Imam (`a) explained, As for such people, they may come out to a wasteland or go up a high roof in their houses, wave towards Imam al-husayn (A) with greeting, invoke earnestly curses on those who killed him, and then offer a two-unit prayer. They may do so before midday. They may then mourn and weep for al-husayn (`a) and order those who live with them in their houses to weep for him, unless they fear for themselves from certain individuals who live with them. They may hold mournful ceremonies in their houses and show grief for him. They may also console one another on this terrible occasion of Imam al-husayn s sufferings. If they do all that, I myself guarantee for them to grant the rewards that I have mentioned beforehand. The reporter asked, May Allah accept me as ransom for you! Do you really promise them and guarantee for them to have that reward? The Imam (`a) answered, Yes, I do. I do promise them and guarantee for them having that reward.

4 Merits If possible, you may not leave your house on that day to settle any of your needs, because this day is doomed and no need of a faithful believer is settled on it; and even if it is settled, it will be unblessed. Moreover, whatever is saved on this day will be unblessed and so will be his family members. If they do all that, they will have the reward of one thousand times of Hajj and one thousand times of `umrah as well as one thousand participations in campaigns with the Holy Messenger of Allah. They will also gain the reward of all misfortunes that have inflicted every prophet, prophet s successor, veracious, and martyr who have died or been killed since Almighty Allah has created this world up to the Resurrection Hour. Salih ibn `Aqabah and Sayf ibn `Umayrah have reported `Alqamah ibn Muhammad al-hadrami as saying that he, once, asked Imam al- Baqir (A), to teach him a prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day (of `Ashura') when he would visit Imam

5 Merits al-husayn s tomb and to teach him another supplicatory prayer with which he would pray Almighty Allah on that day when he would be unable to visit the tomb and then he would point to the tomb and send greetings to Imam al-husayn (`a) from his own house. The Imam thus said, Listen, `Alqamah! After you point to Imam al-husayn (A) with greetings and offer the two-unit prayer, you may utter the Takbir statement (i.e. allahu-akbar) and then say... (the forthcoming form of Ziyarah). If you do so, you will have said the prayer that is said by the angels who visit Imam al-husayn (A). You will be also raised one hundred million ranks to join the rank of those who were martyred with him (i.e. Imam al-husayn) and you will be included with their group. You will, moreover, be awarded the reward of the visiting of all Prophets and Messengers as well as the reward of all the visitors of Imam al-husayn (`a) since the day of his martyrdom. Peace of Allah be upon him and upon his household.

7 ب ش م الل ي الر ح م ن م الر ح In the Name of Alláh, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. bismi allahi alrrahmini alrrahimi

8 Ziyárah A'ashura م ا م غ ل ا لش ال ي الل د غ ب اب ا Peace be upon you, O Abu-`Abdullah. alssalamu `alayka ya aba `abdillahi

9 Ziyárah A'ashura م ا ب ن ر ص ل م غ ل ا لش ال ي الل Peace be upon you, O son of Allah s Messenger. alssalamu `alayka yabna rasuli allahi

10 الش ال م غ ل م ا خ ر ة خ ر ث ي اب ن الل Ziyárah A'ashura ي و Peace be upon you, O choicest of Allah and son of His choicest. alssalamu `alayka ya khiyarata allahi wabna khiyaratihi

11 م ا ب ن ام ر م غ ل ا لش ال ال م م و ؤ ن Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful alssalamu `alayka yabna amiri almu'minina

12 د ال ض ن و اب ن ص and son of the chief of the Prophets successors. wabna sayyidi alwasiyyina

13 م ا ب ن ف اط م ة ل م غ ا لش ال Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah alssalamu `alayka yabna fatimata

14 ص د ة ه ش اء ن م ال ػ ال the doyenne of the women of the worlds. sayyidati nisa'i al`alamina

15 م غ ا لش ال خ ار ى م ا خ ار ل الل ي و ال ال م ث ث ر ر اب ن Ziyárah A'ashura و Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah, son of His vengeance, and the unavenged so far. alssalamu `alayka ya thara allahi wabna tharihi walwitra almawtura

16 م م غ ل ا لش ال ح ل ت ل و غ ب ف و ائ م االر و Ziyárah A'ashura ا ح ال ج Peace be upon you and upon the souls that resided in your courtyard. alssalamu `alayka wa `ala al-arwahi allati hallat bifina'ika

17 غ ل ن م م و ج م ػا ص ال م Ziyárah A'ashura الل ي اب دا Peace of Allah be upon all of you from me forever `alaykum minni jami`an salamu allahi abadan

18 م ا ب ك ت و ب ك الل و Ziyárah A'ashura و الو ا ر as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night. ma baqitu wa baqiya allaylu walnnaharu

19 الل ي ا اب ا غ ب د O Abu-`Abdullah, ya aba `abdillahi

20 Ziyárah A'ashura ل ك د غ ظ م ت الر ز ة unbearable is the sorrow laqad `azumat alrraziyyatu

21 و ج ل ت و غ م ط ب ظ م ت ال م ب ة and excruciating and unbearable is the misfortune of you wa jallat wa `azumat almusibatu bika

22 Ziyárah A'ashura م اإل ص ال و ج م ع ا ل و غ ا غ ل و for us and for all the people of Islam. `alayna wa `ala jami`i ahli al-islami

23 و ج ل ت و غ م ت م ط ب ج م ظ Ziyárah A'ashura Excruciating and unbearable has been your misfortune wa jallat wa `azumat musibatuka

24 ات ج ف الش م او ا ت غ ل الش م او و ا Ziyárah A'ashura م ع in the heavens for all the inhabitants of the heavens. fi alssamawati `ala jami`i ahli alssamawati

25 Ziyárah A'ashura ػ ن ة الل ي ف ل ام م الظ ل اص ش ت اص ا س ر و ال ج So, may Allah curse the people who laid the basis of persecution and wronging against you, fala`ana allahu ummatan assasat asasa alzzulmi waljawri

26 م ا غ ل و ن ال ب ت O Members of the Household. `alaykum ahla albayti

27 م ك الل ي و ل ػ ن ام ة د ام ن م ف ػ ج ن م غ ن May Allah curse the people who drove you away from your position wa la`ana allahu ummatan dafa`atkum `an maqamikum

28 ر اث ب ن م ال ج م غ ن م ج ف ا الل ي م ر ث ب ن و ازال ن and removed you away from your ranks that Allah has put you in. wa azalatkum `an maratibikum allati rattabakum allahu fiha

29 م ج ام ة الل ي و ل ػ ن ل ج ل ن May Allah curse the people who slew you. wa la`ana allahu ummatan qatalatkum

30 ال م م الل ي و ل ػ ن د ن ل م May Allah curse those who paved the way for them to do so wa la`ana allahu almumahhidina lahum

31 ب الج م ن ن م ن ل ج ال ن م and who made possible for them to fight against you. bilttamkini min qitalikum

32 Ziyárah A'ashura ي الل إ ل ب ر ئ ت و إ ل ن م م و م I repudiate them in the presence of Allah and You bari'tu ila allahi wa ilaykum minhum

33 ل ائ م و او و م ن اش اغ م و اث ب اغ م and I repudiate their devotees, followers, and loyalists. wa min ashya`ihim wa atba`ihim wa awliya'ihim

34 الل ي ا اب ا غ ب د O Abu-`Abdullah, ya aba `abdillahi

35 Ziyárah A'ashura إ ه ص ل م ل م ن ص ال م ن م I am at peace with those who are at peace with you inni silmun liman salamakum

36 و ح ر ب ل م ن ح ار ب ن م م إ ل ال ك ام ة and I am at war against those who have fought against you up to the Resurrection Day. wa harbun liman harabakum ila yawmi alqiyamati

37 Ziyárah A'ashura الل ي و ل ػ ن ال ز اد و ال ا ن م ر و May Allah also curse the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan. wa la`ana allahu ala ziyadin wa ala marwana

38 الل ي و ل ػ ن ب و ام ة ل اط ب ة May Allah also curse the descendants of Umayyah altogether. wa la`ana allahu bani umayyata qatibatan

39 م ر ج اب ن الل ي و ل ػ ن ة اه May Allah also curse the son of Marjanah. wa la`ana allahu ibna marjanata

40 د ص ػ غ م ر ب ن الل ي و ل ػ ن May Allah also curse `Umar the son of Sa`d. wa la`ana allahu `umara bna sa`din

41 Ziyárah A'ashura ش م را الل ي و ل ػ ن May Allah also curse Shimr. wa la`ana allahu shimran

42 الل ي و ل ػ ن ام ة اص ر ج ت و ت ال ج م May Allah also curse the people who saddled up, gave reins to their horses, wa la`ana allahu ummatan asrajat wa aljamat

43 ب ت و ث و ل ك ج ال م ك and masked their faces in preparation for fighting against you. wa tanaqqabat liqitalika

44 ب اب اه ت و ام May my father and mother be ransoms for you. bi'abi anta wa ummi

45 م م ط ل ك د غ ظ اب ب م Extremely insufferable is my commiserations with you; laqad `azuma musabi bika

46 ال ذ ي الل ي ف اص ال و ب م ك ام م اه ر م م Ziyárah A'ashura و اه ر م so, I beseech Allah Who has honored your position and honored me because of you fa'as'alu allaha alladhi akrama maqamaka wa akramani bika

47 ان ر ز ل و طل ب ك خ ار to endue me with the chance to avenge you an yarzuqani talaba tha'rika

48 م ع إ م ام م و ط ر م ن ا و ب ت م ح م د Ziyárah A'ashura with a (Divinely) supported leader from the Household of Muhammad, ma`a imamin mansurin min ahli bayti muhammadin

49 و ا ل ي ي غ ل الل ي ض ل peace of Allah be upon him and his Household. salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi

50 Ziyárah A'ashura اج ػ ل و م غ و د ك و ج ا الل O Allah, (please) make me illustrious in Your sight allahumma ij`alni `indaka wajihan

51 ي الش ف الد ه ا ال م ب ال ح ش ن غ ل و اال خ ر ة in the name of al-husayn, peace be Ziyárah A'ashura upon him, in this world and in the Hereafter. bilhusayni `alayhi alssalamu fi alddunya wal-akhirati

52 الل ي ا اب ا غ ب د O Abu-`Abdullah, ya aba `abdillahi

53 ر ب إ ه اث ك و إ ل ي الل إ ل Ziyárah A'ashura ر ص ل ي I do seek nearness to Allah, to His Messenger, inni ataqarrabu ila allahi wa ila rasulihi

54 ام ر و إ ل ال م ؤ م و ن ف اط م ة و إ ل to the Commander of the Faithful, to Fatimah, wa ila amiri almu'minina wa ila fatimata

55 ن ال ح ش و إ ل ث و إ ل م ب م اال م to al-hasan, and to you by means of loyalty to you wa ila alhasani wa ilayka bimuwalatika

56 و ب ال ب ر اء ة ( م م ن ل اث ل م and by means of repudiation of those who fought against you wa bilbara'ati (mimman qatalaka

57 ال ح ر ب ل م و ه ط ب and incurred your hostility, wa nasaba laka alharba

58 و ب ال ب ر اء ة م الظ ل م م ن اص س اص ا س م ر غ ل ن و ال ج and repudiation of those who laid the basis of persecution and wronging against you all. wa bilbara'ati mimman assasa asasa alzzulmi waljawri `alaykum

59 Ziyárah A'ashura ل ي( ر ص و إ ل ي الل إ ل و اب ر ا I also repudiate, in the presence of Allah and His Messenger, wa abra'u ila allahi wa ila rasulihi)

60 م م ن اص س اص اس ذل Ziyárah A'ashura م those who laid the basis of all that, mimman assasa asasa dhalika

61 ي غ ل و ب و ي ب و اه established their foundations on it, wa bana `alayhi bunyanahu

62 م م و ج ر ى غ ل ن ف ظ ل ي م و غل اش اغ ن و ج ر ى and continued in wronging and persecuting you and your adherents. wa jara fi zulmihi wa jawrihi `alaykum wa `ala ashya`ikum

63 Ziyárah A'ashura ي الل إ ل ب ر ئ ت و إ ل ن م م و م In the presence of Allah and you all do I repudiate these. bari'tu ila allahi wa ilaykum minhum

64 Ziyárah A'ashura م خ م إ ل ن ر ب ي الل إ ل و اث ك And I seek nearness to Allah and then to you all wa ataqarrabu ila allahi thumma ilaykum

65 ب م اال ث ن م و م اال ة و ل ن م by means of declaring loyalty to you and to your loyalists bimuwalatikum wa muwalati waliyyikum

66 و ب ال ب ر اء ة م ن اغ د ائ ن م and declaring repudiation of your enemies wa bilbara'ati min a`da'ikum

67 م اض ب ن و الو ل ن ال ح ر ب and those who incur animosity of you walnnasibina lakum alharba

68 و ب ال ب ر اء ة Ziyárah A'ashura م م ن اش اغ م و اث ب اغ and repudiation of their adherents and followers. wa bilbara'ati min ashya`ihim wa atba`ihim

69 Ziyárah A'ashura إ ه ص ل م ل م ن ص ال م ن م I am verily at peace with those who have been at peace with you, inni silmun liman salamakum

70 و ح ر ب ل م ن ح ار ب ن م I am at war against those who fought against you, wa harbun liman harabakum

71 ل ل م ن و اال ه م و و loyalist to those who have been loyalist to you, wa waliyyun liman walakum

72 ل م ن غ اد اه م و غ د و and enemy of those who have shown enmity towards you. wa `aduwwun liman `adakum

73 و ال الل ي ف اص ر م ب م ػ ر ف ج ن م ال ذ ي اه So, I beseech Allah Who has endued me with the honor of recognizing you fa'as'alu allaha alladhi akramani bima`rifatikum

74 ة او ل ائ ن م و م ػ ر ف and recognizing your loyalists wa ma`rifati awliya'ikum

75 Ziyárah A'ashura ة ال ب ر اء و ر ز ل و م ن اغ د ائ ن م and Who conferred upon me with repudiation of your enemies, wa razaqani albara'ata min a`da'ikum

76 ان ج ػ ل و م ػ ن م ف الد ه ا و اال خ ر ة to include me with you in this world and in the Hereafter an yaj`alani ma`akum fi alddunya walakhirati

77 ض د ق و ان د د م ب ت ل غ و د ه م ل and to make firm step of honesty for me with you wa an yuthabbita li `indakum qadama sidqin

78 ف الد ه ا و اال خ ر ة in this world and in the Hereafter. fi alddunya wal-akhirati

79 Ziyárah A'ashura ي ان ب ل غ و م ال م كا و اص ال ال م ح م د ل ن م غ و د الل ي I also beseech Him to make me attain the praiseworthy status that you enjoy with Allah wa as'aluhu an yuballighani almaqama almahmuda lakum `inda allahi

80 و ان ر ز ل و طل ب خ ار ي and to bestow upon me with the chance to take my own vengeance wa an yarzuqani talaba tha'ri

81 م ع إ م ام دى ظ ا ر with a leader of true guidance who is (Divinely) sustained ma`a imami hudan zahirin

82 Ziyárah A'ashura م و ن م ب ال ح ق ه اط ق and expressing the truth from among you. natiqin bilhaqqi minkum

83 Ziyárah A'ashura ب ح ك ن م الل ي و اص ال I also beseech Allah in your names wa as'alu allaha bihaqqikum

84 و ب الش ان ال ذ ي ل ن م غ و د ى and in the name of the standing that you enjoy with Him wa bilshsha'ni alladhi lakum `indahu

85 ان ػ ط و ب م ط اب ب ن م to recompense me for my commiserations for you an yu`tiyani bimusabi bikum

86 Ziyárah A'ashura و اف ض م ا ػ ط م ط ابا ب م ط ب ج ي with the most favorite thing that He ever gives as compensation for misfortunes that has afflicted anyone. afdala ma yu`ti musaban bimusibatihi

87 م ا م ط ب ة م ا اغ ظ (Your) misfortune has been so astounding musibatan ma a`zamaha

88 Ziyárah A'ashura و اغ ظ م ر ز ج ا ف م اإل ص ال and so catastrophic for Islam wa a`zama raziyyataha fi al-islami

89 و ف ج م ع الش م او ا ت ض و االر and for all the heavens and the entire earth. wa fi jami`i alssamawati wal-ardi

90 اج ػ ل و ف م ك ام ذ ا م الل O Allah, (please) make me in this situation of mine allahumma ij`alni fi maqami hadha

91 ات و ر ح م م م ن ث و ال ي م و م ض ل و م ف غ ر ة ة Ziyárah A'ashura one of those who receive blessings, mercy, and forgiveness from You. mimman tanaluhu minka salawatun wa rahmatun wa maghfiratun

92 ا ي م ح و اج ػ Ziyárah A'ashura م ح ا م الل O Allah, (please) make me live my lifetime in the same way as allahumma ij`al mahyaya mahya

93 م ح م د و ا ل م ح م د Muhammad and Muhammad s Household lived muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

94 و م م اث م م ات م ح م د و ا ل م ح م د and make me die on the same principles on which Muhammad and Muhammad s Household died. wa mamati mamata muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

95 م ذ ا إ ن م الل O Allah, this day allahumma inna hadha yawmun

96 ث ب ر ه ت ب ي ب و ام ة has been regarded as blessed day by the descendants of Umayyah tabarrakat bihi banu umayyata

97 و اب ن ا ه ل االهب ا د ة and by the son of the liver-eater woman, wabnu akilati al-akbadi

98 الل ػ ن اب ن الل ػ ن the accursed and son of the accursed alla`inu ibnu alla`ini

99 غ ل ل ش اه م و ل ش ان ه ب Ziyárah A'ashura م by the tongue of You and by the tongue of Your Prophet, `ala lisanika wa lisani nabiyyika

100 و ا ل ي ي غ ل الل ي ض ل Allah s peace be upon him, salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi

101 Ziyárah A'ashura ف ه و م ط ن و م ل ف on every occasion and in every situation, fi kulli mawtinin wa mawqifin

102 و ل ف ب م ف ي ه ض ل و ا ل ي ي الل ي ل Ziyárah A'ashura غ which Your Prophet, Allah s peace be upon him, attended. waqafa fihi nabiyyuka salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi

103 ان و م ػ ال ػ ن اب ا ص ف و ز د ب ن م ػ او ة او ة Ziyárah A'ashura م الل O Allah, pour curses upon Abu-Sufyan, Mu`awiyah, and Yazid son of Mu`awiyah. allahumma il`an aba sufyana wa mu`awiyata wa yazida bna mu`awiyata

104 م م و م غ ل ػ و الل اال ب د ن اب د ة May Your curse be upon them incessantly and everlastingly. `alayhim minka alla`natu abada al-abidina

105 Ziyárah A'ashura ب ي ال ز اد و ال ان و ذ ا م ر و م ف ر ح ت This is the day on which the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan gloated wa hadha yawmun farihat bihi alu ziyadin wa alu marwana

106 غ ل ال ح ش ن ا ت ض ل Ziyárah A'ashura الل ي ب ك ج ل م ي because they had killed al-husayn, Allah s blessings be upon him. biqatlihim alhusayna salawatu allahi `alayhi

107 م ف ض اغ ف غ ل م الل ػ ن الل م و م So, O Allah, pour frequent curses upon them allahumma fada`if `alayhim alla`na minka

108 و ال ػ ذ اب ) )االل م and double for them the painful chastisement. wal`adhaba (al-alima)

109 م ف لل م إ ل ا إ اث ك ه ر ب ذ ا ال م O Allah, I do seek nearness to You on this day, allahumma inni ataqarrabu ilayka fi hadha alyawmi

110 و ف م ل ف ذ ا on this occasion, wa fi mawqifi hadha

111 ام ح اث و ا and on all the days of my lifetime, wa ayyami hayati

112 ب ال ب ر اء ة م ة و و الل ػ م و م غ ل by repudiating these and invoking Your curses upon them, bilbara'ati minhum walla`nati `alayhim

113 ة و ب ال م اال Ziyárah A'ashura ل و ب م و ا ل ه ب م and by declaring loyalty to Your Prophet and Your Prophet s Household, wa bilmuwalati linabiyyika wa ali nabiyyika

114 ي و غ ل م غ ل الش ال م peace be upon him and them. `alayhi wa `alayhim alssalamu

115 Ziyárah A'ashura ال ػ ن ظ ال م Recite 100 times م او ل الل O Allah, pour curses upon the foremost persecutor allahumma il`an awwala zalimin

116 م ح ق م ح م ظ ل د و ا ل م ح م د Recite 100 times who usurped the right of Muhammad and Muhammad s Household zalama haqqa muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

117 Recite 100 times اب ي و ا خ ر ث ع ل م ذل غ ل and the last follower who acceded to his deed. wa akhira tabi`in lahu `ala dhalika

118 ج ا د ال ػ ال ج ػ ط اب ة Recite 100 times م ن ال الل ال ح ش ن ت O Allah, pour curses upon the gang that struggled against al-husayn allahumma il`an al`isabata allati jahadat alhusayna

119 و ش ا ػ ت و ب ا ػ ت و ث اب ػ ت ل ج ل ي غ ل Recite 100 times and who supported each other against him, paid homage to his enemies, and participated in slaying him. wa shaya`at wa baya`at wa taba`at `ala qatlihi

120 Ziyárah A'ashura ال ػ و م ج م ػا Recite 100 times م الل O Allah, pour curses upon all of them. allahumma il`anhum jami`an

121 Ziyárah A'ashura م ا اب ا غ ب د م غ ل ا لش ال ي الل Recite 100 times Peace be upon you, O Abu-`Abdullah alssalamu `alayka ya aba `abdillahi

122 Recite 100 times م ب ف و ائ ح ل ت ا ح االر و ل و غ ال ج and upon the souls that gathered in your courtyard. wa `ala al-arwahi allati hallat bifina'ika

123 Ziyárah A'ashura Recite 100 times غ ل م اب دا ي الل م و ص ال م Peace of Allah be upon you from me forever `alayka minni salamu allahi abadan

124 Recite 100 times م ا ب ك ت و ب ك الل و Ziyárah A'ashura و الو ا ر as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night. ma baqitu wa baqiya allaylu walnnaharu

125 م و Ziyárah A'ashura ا خ ر الل ي ل ي و ال ج ػ د ال ػ Recite 100 times ل ز ار ث ن م May Allah not cause this (visit) to be the last of my visit to you (all). wa la ja`alahu allahu akhira al`ahdi minni liziyaratikum

126 Recite 100 times ن ال ح ش غ ل ا لش ال م Peace be upon al-husayn, alssalamu `ala alhusayni

137 ال ك ام ة م إ ل up to the Resurrection Day. ila yawmi alqiyamati

138 Recite in prostration/ Sajdah م د ال ح م ل م الل O Allah, all praise be to You; allahumma laka alhamdu
