1 INSIDE - July 4th Luau/ Dock Power - Grits n Haggis - Memorial Day - Sail Camp K E O W E E S A I L I N G C L U B June 2014 Join us for a Luau Saturday July 5th Egg carton sailboat race- age categories based on entrants. Dinner at 6:30 Bonfire on the beach Wear your grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts!! Rum punch and soft drinks will be provided. Guests: $5 adults, $3 children RSVP: rstric71@yahoo.com or sign up at the club MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE Electrical power on the docks is now a reality and it comes together with responsibilities. To address those responsibilities, the Board of Stewards at the June 21 meeting approved the following rules to be included in the KSC Operating Policy. I urge each member who plans to use dock power to read these rules carefully and follow them to the letter. In this way, members can enjoy this new convenience and avoid the possibility of accidental discharge of current and subsequent injury to persons. RULES FOR USE OF DOCK POWER Without exception, all connections made to KSC electrical receptacles shall be U.L. approved weatherproof, three wire, grounded type. Wiring must be of sufficient amperage for its use as specified by the National Electrical Code. All severely weathered or visibly damaged cords must be replaced. Due to safety concerns, undersized or damaged cords will be disconnected by KSC personnel upon discovery. Any electrical connections to receptacles on KSC docks shall be made using a GFCI device. This can be accomplished with an intervening GFCI cable or GFCI equipped extension cord. Equipment connected to dock receptacles shall be disconnected at end of the day unless the user is remaining on the premises during the duration that such connections are installed. 1
2 2014 Grits n Haggis - Sam Secrest Photos courtesy of Bach Wilson On Saturday, with breezes a steady 10-12, feeling more like October than May, the first of four races started at During the day, the wind picked up, gusts increased in strength. The sky turned grey and it was starting to seem like November. The 3rd race of the day saw us racing up the course taking spray over the bow and many boats didn t bother with the spinnaker on the downwind leg as they were on a plane from mark to mark. For the fourth race it was more of the same, with Rob Fowler giving us a lesson of how they sail in Tennessee, except the gusts were more predictable and we flew spinnakers again. At the end of the day, we were treated to a roast pork dinner and beer served by Scottish kitchen wenches in a warm clubhouse. The next morning, the temperature was 56 degrees and raining. After a breakfast egg casserole and some cheesy grits topped off with a bit of real haggis imported from Scotland, the boats were re-launched. By 9 am the rain had stopped and boats were heading out to the course. The westerly winds of the previous day were gone and we now had wind from just north of East. These winds were more fickle than the previous day, shifty and then some, but we were able to get in 2 races. This was a tough fleet from 6 different clubs. Privateer Yacht Club from Chattanooga took 2 trophies, Western Carolina, Lake Murray, and Keowee each had one. 3 Memorial Day Party There was a full house for the annual Memorial Day Party with 150 people attending. That made for a good selection of appetizers and desserts on hand. Robyn and Jennifer Strickland put together a wonderful party with very festive decorations. The weather was very cooperative with the rain ending just in time to cook the hamburgers and hot dogs. Our chef Michael Burnham created a wonderful Asian Slaw. Quite a few members requested the recipe and Michael was gracious enough to share it. Asian Slaw - Large Batch Recipe Ingredients: 2 Heads Napa cabbage thinly sliced 2 Heads Bok Choy thinly sliced 1 Red Bell Pepper julienne 1 Bunch Cilantro 2 Limes (juice of both plus zest of one) 2 cups sugar 1 Bottle Rice Vinegar (12 ounce) 2 Bottles Sweet Chili Sauce (10 ounce) ¼ Cup Fresh Ginger grated 1 pineapple, fresh, small diced Directions: Combine vinegar and sugar and whisk until dissolved. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Refrigerate for two hours before serving. Add cooked shrimp to make an entree salad. Memorial Day Distance Race - Rob Kaiser 10 entrants started the Memorial Day Distance race in what could generously be termed a light northerly zephyr. The race started at the dock in front of the club house and was scheduled to proceed around the research buoy to island #5, back to the research buoy, back around island #5, back to the research buoy and then to a finish between the no wake buoys at the Club. After the fleet rounded the research buoy, the wind became extremely light and spotty. Almost everyone in the race was leading at some point during the second leg from the research buoy to island #5 but Jack Wise in his Hobie 18 found some personal wind in the middle of the course, stretched out to a nice lead and was first to finish. The race was shortened and finished at the research buoy after one lap around Results of Long Distrance Race Multi-Hull Fleet 1st - Jack Wise, Hobie 18; 2nd - David Strickland, Hobie 18; 3rd - Rick Harper, Hobie 16 PHRF A Fleet 1st - Andre Pool, S2 7.9; 2nd - Joe Hiller, Capri 25; 3rd - Rob Baldwin J-24; 4th - Kip Smith, Capri 25 PHRF C Fleet 1st - Roger Sulhoff, Catalina 250 WK; 2nd - Scott Brafford, Santana 23; 3rd - Mike Mopps, O Day 27 IB; 4th Glenn Kats, Hunter 260 3
4 2014 SAIL CAMP - Dan Eskew Photos courtesy of David Smith Forty-five students participated in KSC s Youth Sail Camps this year. About 30 adult volunteers were instrumental in making the camp possible. This program is so desired that we are already getting requests about next year! More than half of the students had little or no sailing experience before the camp. By the end of the third day, all could right a capsized boat, start a race, and make their way around a triangular course, although not always gracefully! You will find a few pictures herein to give you a general idea of the fun and learning that took place. Thank you to all of our volunteers, many of whom gave up three full days. But really special thanks to Jack Wise and Vincent Blouin, our lead instructors for the two sessions. KSC PLANNING Wally Zinck Following is a snapshot of the Planning List that is on our website. A lot has been accomplished as you can see. BTW the completed tasks will be removed next month to keep the website current. If you have any ideas of things that could make our club better let the Board know. Guide dogs and other assistance animals are of course exempt. -Owners are required to ensure that their pet does not create a nuisance for other members; for example, excessive barking. -The Grounds Committee has specified a designated pet bathroom area. Owners must take their pets to that area and pick up litter afterwards. -Pet privileges are for members only and do not extend to guests, or regatta visitors. COOKING CLASS AT KEOWEE SAILING CLUB - Photos courtesy of Patti Kats Michael Burnham offered a cooking class on Saturday, May 31. He could only accommodate a few people. After a little hiccup with the time, Davida Steinbrink, the Katses and and the Carrs were shown how to make Shrimp n Grits. A comment from one participant who is not a grits fan, said everything was delicious and she might have to change her mind about grits.
