Immediate Past Commodore Don Wills provided his wisdom and guidance to the board for a second year in this role. Both Don and Kevin Bruce were great examples to follow as I progressed through the commodore ranks behind them. Vice Commodore Chris Powell provided us with fantastic dinner meetings and speakers (Continued on page 2) Race Report Race Chair Snowbird and More Celebrate A Life Well Lived, Our Friend, Don Foss

Rear Commodore Joe Bozick managed the induction of eight new members to the club this year and was a big help at the membership drive at Shilshole. Treasurer Nancy Kick managed the books very well and tracked the club s cash flow to support club events. Cruise Chair Mary Murphy put on a great year of cruises including an absolutely outstanding June Dinner Dance, and Salmon Bake. She also made sure our club burgee is again flying at Shilshole Bay marina. Secretary Lynne McNulty once again did an outstanding job organizing all the club details from meeting minutes and reciprocal agreements to obtaining haul-out donations for the TransPuget and all other club correspondence. Race Chair Christina Hannan brought her enthusiasm and fun to promote and run our club s races and run the TransPuget regatta. Quartermaster Nancy Merson kept our supplies in stock and expanded our line-up of SBYCbranded gear. Directors Jen Krause and Judy Cooper provided help with special projects like the cross-club membership drive and organizing the nominating committee for the 2013 board. Webmaster Robert Blaylock continued work behind the scenes to keep the club s website running smoothly. He also takes on the job of printing all the membership cards each year. Our Rudderpost Editor Rubie Sanborn Johnson continued her great work editing the Rudderpost throughout the year. She is stepping down from Rudderpost Editor after many years of providing this very important communication to the club. Pat Hillis continues to volunteer her time and energy in putting together and publishing our club roster each year. This is very much appreciated! Thanks also to Jerry Hillis and John Sterry for providing their time and their boats (Olelle and Limmershin) to the Race Committee this year. A big thank you also goes out to Dennis Palmer for all his great efforts organizing the TransPuget Benefit Regatta and for help with our youth program donations. Many (Continued on page 3)

4 Page 4 December Newsletter Vice Commodore Report By Chris Powell Next Dinner Meeting Thursday December 20 Anthony s at Shilshole Bay 5:00 PM Happy Hour in the bar - 7:00 PM Dinner Change of Watch, and Santa! This month's dinner program will include the Change of Watch and then the annual holiday gift exchange. The dinner is on Thursday, December 20 at Anthony's at Shilshole. Happy hour officially starts at 4pm and the banquet room is available to us at 6:30pm. Dinner starts at 7pm. I have worked with Anthony's to arrange for a dessert for this dinner. The dinner invitations will be sent out by direct the week of December 10 (both SurveyMonkey and EventBot have had technical difficulties with delivering s) and we will use EventBot only for collecting your reservations. In the Change of the Watch ceremony, each Bridge Officer will bring their officer s flag to hand over to the new officer, the outgoing Commodore will receive his Past Commodore burgee, we ll have an opportunity to recognize the 2012 board and volunteers, and to make the formal introduction of the 2013 board. The gift exchange is always a great time and we will have Santa and Santa's helpers run the show. Below are the rules for the gift exchange. If you choose to participate, bring one or more wrapped gifts (minimum cost $15 and maximum $20). For each gift you bring, you will receive a number. When your number is called, Santa will select a gift for you. You can choose to take the gift Santa selected, or you can exchange it (unopened) for a gift that has already been unwrapped. If you decide to keep the gift, you must unwrap it immediately, HOLD it UP for EVERYONE to admire, and leave it visible on top of your table at all times (no taking it to your car or leaving early to protect your prize booty). If you choose to exchange your unopened gift for a gift that has already been unwrapped, the person you stole the gift from can then either open your gift right there, or steal someone else s opened gift. To avoid marathon exchanges, we will limit the stealing to twice per gift. Once a particular gift has been stolen twice, it is locked to the person who made the second steal and it can no longer be stolen.

5 Page 5 December Newsletter The first person to get a gift and start the gift exchange gets the chance for a final steal of any available (non-locked down) gift. The Vice Commodore reserves the right to initiate a speed round to really get things moving if things slow down. I hope to see you December 20 at the Holiday Dinner and gift exchange. This dinner meeting always has a fantastic turnout. Have a wonderful holiday season! Vice Commodore Chris Powell NOTICE: The January Board Meeting will take place on Thursday, January 3, rather than the customary 16 days prior to the general membership meeting which would place it on January 1. Board meetings for 2013 will be held at the Powell/Mellen home unless otherwise specified. Please contact Chris for directions and parking options. Thanks, Chris Powell

6 Page 6 December Newsletter Rear Commodore s Corner By Joe Bozick Membership Renewal It is time to renew your membership, and update your profile for the Roster by December 15, if you have not done so already. The renewal process involves submitting the renewal form in addition to your payment, so that we can keep our files on your information up to date, and the Membership Roster accurate. To be included in the annual Roster of members, payment must be received by December 15, before the next dinner meeting. Members may renew at any time during the first quarter, but will not be included in the Roster. New Members A look into lives and passions of our new members. Rick & Sharon Seeber Rick and Sharon live aboard Between da Shilshole Marina on their Beneteau 42s7 racer-cruiser Bruce Farr designed sailing vessel. As former powerboat owners who have cruised as far north as half way up both sides of Vancouver Island, owning a sail boat has been a new worldly experience for both of them. Rick became interested in sailing three years ago and began taking ASA certified lessons to 106. Last February after months of planning and searching, including soul introspection, they located and purchased their current sailing sloop. Since that fateful journey began the two of them have worked tirelessly to give this magic carpet the loving attention she so richly deserved and hadn't gotten for some time but kept on giving. This is just the beginning for these two as they plan on taking the big left turn the third week of September 2013 and follow the sun where the wind takes their full sails. Rick is a Mechanical Design Engineer currently working for Boeing and his interests lay in fishing and photography. Sharon is an avid reader, and currently reads a lot of books about cruising, galley information, and anything to do with our new lifestyle. She is also interested in taking a class on cruising off shore for women. We have a chocolate Labrador who will be part of this adventure with us. Please take some time and give a good welcome to Rick and Sharon. (Continued on page 7)

7 Page 7 December Newsletter (Continued from page 6) Mary Brandin New Members, Continued A native of Baltimore, Maryland I spent most of my childhood on the Atlantic Coastline and sailed on the Chesapeake while at university. My love for vast expanses of open water, and the feeling of calm when near it, inspired my studies in Marine and Environmental Science. As a high school biology teacher I worked my way up the west coast from San Francisco to Portland and finally stopped to raise a family here in Seattle (a son, daughter and two granddaughters). Travel, the arts and outdoors are among my many passions. I ve been fortunate to live and work in Germany, visit New Zealand and Australia while my daughter was working abroad (sailing in the Whitsunday Islands a highlight) and I m bound for North Africa this spring (my first time in a Felucca on the Nile). I look forward to becoming a more proficient sailor and moreover, will relish in the camaraderie, excitement and magnificent scenery while being on the water with all of you. Jennifer lives on the east side and has a great passion for the water whether cruising, sailing, or having cocktails/hor d'oeuvres aboard. It doesn't matter as long as she can share the gorgeous N.W. waters with other funloving boaters. She grew up in Port Orchard WA. where the family always had a boat and her dad was commodore of the yacht club. Her family enjoyed the yacht club activities especially the "rafting up" with friends in many of the local harbors. Each summer her family spent blissful hours boating in Canadian waters and visited unique ports. Her career training was in teaching and taught in Seattle for a couple years before joining Proctor and Gamble as a sales representative for the Seattle territory. Jennifer is currently enjoying her retirement by taking vacations around the world. Her next trip is Morocco and Spain in April. For years Jennifer has been involved in her condo association as a Board member. She was very involved in the new landscape design and remodel of the condo buildings, as well as remodeling her own condo unit. Dressage horseback riding is also a passion and has taken years of lessons on her favorite Appaloosa horse. She loves to be with her friends attending cultural events, movies, dinners out, two book clubs, and playing cards. Welcome! 9 Page 9 December Newsletter SKI CRUISE By Mike Thompson, Ski Cruise Chair February 22 24, 24, 2013 in Wenatchee The annual Shilshole Bay Yacht Club Ski Cruise will be held on Feb. 22, 23, and 24. Once again we will be headquartered at the Red Lion Inn in Wenatchee, WA. We are getting a room rate of $ tax per night including breakfast buffet. Just call the hotel and mention that you are with the yacht club. I m trying to find out if the hotel will once again be offering a discount lift ticket to Mission Ridge Ski Area for all of us downhill skiers. There is cross country skiing at Leavenworth or the Lake Chelan area. There are snowshoe trails at Mission Ridge Ski Area. There are many wineries offering wine tasting in the Wenatchee, Leavenworth, and Lake Chelan areas for your non skiing times. I have sent a message to the cruise chairman at Sloop Tavern Yacht Club inviting them to join us again. Your 2013 Ski Cruise Chairman, Mike Thompson; mikecomp@clearwire.net Cruise Update by Cruise Chair Mary Murphy Shilshole Marina is absolutely festive and colorful now. Come down on December 18 to see the lights and the Argosy Christmas Ship with Dickens Carolers, floating around the marina and Golden Gardens. Please note corrections to the cruise calendar: Yellowfest is officially on March 30. Also, the original date (September 28) for the Salmon Bake at Brownsville conflicts with Brownsville Days, so a new date will be announced next month. Sorry for the confusion folks. The most excellent news is that I have booked the Kingston Yacht Club AND the famous Dog Tones for the June Dinner Dance. Now, we need a theme. Any ideas floating around out there? I am always open to creative and fun themes. Mary Murphy

10 Page 10 December Newsletter Race Update By Christina Hannan, Race Chair SBYC Snowbird Race 1 November 17, 2012 on View video clips and photos posted by the Commodore. Snowbird series is in full swing with both the November and December races completed. Our third race will be January 12. We have 23 boats registered so far, we'd love to have even more next month. You can download an entry form from the website and the completed form to Tom Madden (in photo below) at racechair@shilshole-bayyc.org. If you are interested in racing but aren't sure you want to brave the winter weather, the warm committee boat is a lovely way to participate in the racing aspect of our club. We haven't had the comforts of Olele the first two races of the Snowbird Series, but we have certainly appreciated John Sterry and Nancy Meerson's ready donation of Limmershin. John has even installed some PVC to his stern to hold the flags. We very much appreciate those who show up and give us a hand deciding the courses, helping with the starts, and calling the finish times. Port Madison Yacht Club has asked if we are interested in considering the Challenge Cup again this year. If there is club interest, please contact Tom Madden so that he can coordinate a good time for this historical race. (Psst - it would be really good to get that trophy back in our case.) 12 Page 12 December Newsletter SBYC extends its deepest sympathies to the family of longtime SBYC member Don Foss who died on November 17. Don and Patty have been club members since They have been active participants and volunteers in many club activities and events throughout their 26 years of membership. They, and their familiar and their beloved Windward, have cruised the waters as far north as The Broughtons, and they spent much of this past summer in the San Juans, joining up with the rendezvous at Stuart Island, and hosting friends and family for vacations. Most recently, they attended the Salmon Bake Cruise where Don demonstrated his chef skills searing the salmon on the outdoor barbecue. Ever proud of his Norwegian heritage, Don s love of boating & sailing, his companionship on summer cruises, his wonderful sense of humor and his great pride in his family and Patty, will be sadly missed.
