7 What s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)? A way of organizing sport to encourage steady development and long term success. Stages of Development: Distinct stages designed to create a positive sport experience and support skill development. Competition Guidelines: Recommendations for youth racing that encourage skill development and retention.

8 Know Your Sailor s Stage In this presentation we are targeting the Stage 3 sailor: They are ready for focused training and want to challenge themselves in competition.

9 Training-to-Competition Ratios A common LTAD recommendation for youth competitors is: 60-70% of participation time spent on training* 30-40% of participation time spent on competition* *recommended ratios vary for each stage of development. 14 Strategies for Shifting July P/C Ratio -Reduce number of regattas. Less is more (a popular strategy with college coaches). Addition by subtraction -Facilitate sailors getting hours outside of formal practice. Teach drills for solo or pair practices. Encourage free sailing. -Treat certain regattas as training regattas. Teach and reinforce a process mindset. -Load up on practice hours in the pre and post season. Encourage both structured and unstructured hours on the water in the shoulder seasons.
