The RYA Volvo Dinghy Show returns for another year to the historical Alexandra Palace in London. Designed as the people s palace and known fondly as Ally Pally, the RYA has held the show in these magnificent Victorian halls for the last 17 years. This year s show promises to be as spectacular as ever and we are delighted that many of our Olympic classes sailors have taken some time away from their preparations and travelled up from Weymouth to join us. With a unique display of legendary Jack Holt designed dinghies as well as the Our Sporting Life - Sail for Gold exhibition we take a look back at dinghy sailing s heritage. Many clubs and classes from around the country are here for you to talk to and as always the RYA is here to answer your questions and assist you with any advice and information. The show features a host of exhibitors from the latest hi-tech dinghies for the fast and furious to the more traditional (and stable!) designs for family sailing, as well as all the kit you need for both on and off the water. I hope you enjoy your day with us here at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 2012 and I am sure you will join me in wishing our sailors the very best of British in August. Special thanks to our title sponsor, Volvo Cars and to our sponsors Yachts and Yachting and Suzuki. HELEN WATERHOuSE RYA SHOW MAnAgeR March 2012 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 3

4 at the show There are a huge variety of activities around the show here s a quick guide From Olympic classes, coaching talks, boat maintenance and towing tips, to alien species and cutting edge technology, there really is something for everyone at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show. With blow boat and virtual racing, competitions and treasure hunts, not forgetting the Volvo Chill Out Zone in the Panorama Hall - a great place to relax, surf the net, play games and catch up on the latest sailing news when it all gets too much! Sail for Gold heritage As you arrive you will see Our Sporting Life - the Sail for Gold Heritage Exhibition in the Palm Court. Here you can immerse yourself in 112 years of Olympic and Paralympic history; the highs, the lows, the challenges and triumphs, in a fascinating exhibition celebrating Britain s unique sailing heritage. Put together by the RYA in association with Our Sporting Life, the exhibition illustrates how Britain cemented its place as the world s most successful Olympic and Paralympic sailing nation through the captivating anecdotes, photographs and keepsakes of those heroes who made sailing history. From yachting s debut as an Olympic sport at Paris 1900 to Britain s record-breaking medal haul at Beijing 2008, the exhibition lets you into the secrets behind the success, including how the boats, clothing, technology and training have changed dramatically over time. Olympic class sailing preview Don t miss out on your chance to hear about our top British sailors preparations ahead of their quest for medals in August. With guest appearances from members of Team GB s sailors and the RYA support team on the Volvo Main Stage on Saturday and Sunday. Olympic class medal racing Whether you will be watching the Team GB sailors from the Nothe in Weymouth or from your armchair on the television, RYA racing rules guru Chris Watts talk on the Volvo Main Stage will help you to understand how medal racing is run, the rules and the all-important tactics. As Chris explains, Sailing in a one-design class will always mean the rules and tactics remain very important and when that race is part of a series, their significance will increase as the series draws to a close. As a result it will not be uncommon to see two boats engaged in a match race where one is trying to make sure it could not be beaten on the overall score. I will be explaining what you might see at the forthcoming sailing events at the Olympics, the rules and tactics you can expect to see and the tension between rule compliance and good sportsmanship. 4 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show March 2012

Oliver s travels Oliver Rofix not only beat off leukaemia but he then went on to sail solo round Britain, raising money for the Antony Nolan Trust. The voyage took 215 days during which Oliver made stops around the coast to raise awareness of the trust, to talk about how his bone marrow donor saved his life and to meet other young people who have been affected by leukaemia. It s an inspiring story, not just of sailing but of personal endeavour. His talk on the Volvo Main Stage is well worth listening to and very humbling. Jack Holt s Centenary Jack Holt was one of the greatest small-boat designers that Britain has ever had. In a career spanning over 60 years, a quarter of a million examples of Holt s 40-plus designs, including the Cadet, Merlin and Mirror dinghies, were built. In celebration of Jack Holt s incredible talent you can find out all about his innovative boat designs, their impact on dinghy sailing in the post-war era and how they have shaped dinghy sailing today at the Volvo Main Stage In addition, you can see the largest ever collection of Jack Holt designed dinghies under one roof in the West Corridor, bought to you by the respective class associations. 13 photos: richard Langdon/skandia team gbr* For the past three Olympic Regattas, Team GBR has been the stand-out team, no matter what the venues of Sydney Harbour, Athens or Qingdao have thrown at them. The theory goes that when you re sailing on home waters, as the Brits will be this summer in Weymouth, you re at an advantage. But is that necessarily the case? We asked RYA Olympic manager Stephen Park, aka Sparky, to do a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of a home Games for his athletes. More distractions One of the benefits of being away at a foreign venue is that there are far fewer distractions, says Sparky. In China, you d get up, have breakfast, go to the venue, go sailing, come home, back to the hotel, dinner and bed. No one knows who you are, you can keep your head down and get on with the job. In Weymouth, you ll get up in the morning and the risk is that you come downstairs and the receptionist starts talking to you about your day and whether you re ready for it and how your results were yesterday, and then you go out and you get to the guy on the gate who knows exactly who you are and knows your first name. And on it goes - unless we manage people s expectations and make sure our sailors are able to go about their day in the way that s most going to help them. For some whose homes are just a fiveminute bike ride away from the sailing centre in Weymouth - sailors like Paul Goodison, Saskia Clark and Nick Dempsey - it s making sure the day-to-day distractions of home life don t get in the way of their focus on the task at hand. Nick could come home and there might be a reminder to pay the TV licence or nappies that need changing, and we ve just got to think all these things through and make sure that whatever environment the athletes create for themselves, that it s the right environment for them to perform at their highest ability. Local knowledge Then again, once the Brits get out on the water, there is the unquestioned advantage of knowing the wind, the tidal effects, the lie of the land better than the foreign competitors. Sparky agrees with this up to a point, although he points out: Most of the top sailors will have done enough sailing in Weymouth to know 95 per cent of what our sailors know. But yes, there is still a degree of just being comfortable and familiar with your surroundings. It s a bit like that feeling you get when you have been on holiday and you re on the final five miles home, and even though you re tired and it s late at night, you drive with that extra bit of confidence. Sailing on your home waters can be a bit like that. However, more than local knowledge, Sparky believes it is local support that will really make the difference, particularly for the medal races that are set to take place close to the shore. Just as Manchester United are hardest to beat when they re playing at home in the intimidating surroundings of Old Trafford, Sparky is keen to encourage vocal and visible support for his team. Having our people out in force for the last Games in Qingdao, waving the Union Jack and cheering on the sailors, that was a big factor, he says. From what we saw at the Test Event last year, other nations - the Dutch, the Kiwis and the French - have caught on to this. So there ll be a bit of competition among the fans too. Who has got the most flags and the biggest flags? Whose fans can scream the loudest? Hopefully because we are the host nation that s a game we can win, and make it very clear exactly who is the home nation just by the amount of noise our supporters can make. March 2012 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 13

14 The ones to beat As the most successful sailing team in the world for more than a decade, Sparky knows that the foreigners will be keener than ever to knock them from their perch, especially on home waters. To return to the Old Trafford analogy, that s always a big game for a visiting photo: richard Langdon/skandia team gbr* photo: mark LLoyd/skandia team gbr* GbR SAILORS AT THE SHOW It s only weeks away until one of the biggest events in the sporting calendar hits the shores of Weymouth and Portland, so make the most of the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show and meet some of the countries top sailors and get their thoughts ahead of London Britain s top sailors will be competing on home waters in the summer including triple Olympic gold medallist, Ben Ainslie and defending Olympic Champion, Paul Goodison. Two of the sailors have taken time out of their busy training schedules to head to the show and will take to the Volvo Main Stage for a catch up and Q+A focusing on how they are preparing mentally and physically ahead of the games. There will also be opportunities for one-on-one coaching on the Volvo RYA Youth Stand, West Hall. team, because they want to beat Manchester United on their home ground. They want to send them home with a bloody nose, and that s what other teams want to do to us. Sparky is fine with that, just so long as it s a fair fight. One thing that might skew the pitch is the ever-growing pressure to put on a good show for the spectators and the TV cameras. Bringing race courses closer to the shore brings the risk of turning the race into a wind-shift lottery. And as for bringing TV cameras closer to the action, well, Ben Ainslie probably has a view on that subject! So too does Sparky: The pressure on the regatta management to give the TV and the spectators what they re looking for - those pressures will be massive. Come the 27th of July, I ve got no doubt that we will field the most competitive British Olympic sailing team that we have ever seen, and all I ask is that we get the opportunity for a fair competition, and that the organisers make sure that above all, they focus on what s best for the sailors and the sport. photo: richard Langdon/skandia team gbr* 14 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show March 2012

16 how clubs can sail for gold How can you get involved in supporting the sport and the Olympic sailing team this summer? 16 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show March 2012

17 photos: all rya* Sailing clubs across the country are gearing up to make the most of a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate a home Olympics. More than 400 sailing clubs and organisations have already signed up for the RYA s Sail for Gold programme to mark the occasion and support the British sailing team in their bid for medal glory. It is after all a unique and golden opportunity for clubs to share the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events, inspire existing members of all ages and encourage newcomers to the sport for the future. Resources to help To help clubs celebrate in style, the RYA has produced a fantastic array of Sail for Gold resources ranging from online information to medals, posters, balloons and bunting. Events could take the form of a special day of on and off the water activities, perhaps coinciding with a specific Olympic date, or could be as simple to organise as holding an existing club event, racing or open day under the Sail for Gold banner. RYA Sail for Gold coordinator Celia Edgington says: It s about getting into the spirit of it all and inspiring everyone to get on the water. There s lots of fun to be had and there are clubs signing up every day now. Inspire, celebrate, support There are plenty of ways to make the occasion. Here are just a few ideas from clubs that celebrated the day in 2011 and have plans for 2012 LInking an open meeting Scaling Dam SC in north Yorkshire linked a Sail for Gold day to a Topper travellers trophy open meeting, which saw 20 young sailors wearing themed T-shirts and taking part in a medal race at the end of the day. Vice commodore Mark Lewis says: We thought it was a really good piece of PR for the sport, and it coincided with the Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth and medal race day, so we had the live feeds from that on display in the club as well, which everyone GOOD LuCk CARD COMPETITION If you re aged between five and sixteen, you could win the once in-a-lifetime prize of personally wishing the British Sailing Team good luck in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Simply design a good luck card which is creative, inspirational and will really give the sailors encouragement when competing out on the water and you could be visiting the 2012 Sail for Gold Regatta in June to personally deliver your card to a member of Team GBR. Visit the Sail for Gold in the Panorama Hall stand to create your card or go to for more information on how to enter. key DATES There are a number of key Sail for Gold dates nationally for everyone to get involved in. Some clubs are looking to hold events when the Olympic torch relay is in their area, check your local press for details. Another major date is the RYA s Push the Boat Out day on July 21, on the Saturday before the start of the London 2012 Games, when thousands of people will be out on the water in yachts, dinghies and windsurfers, creating an amazing spectacle. Clubs will be encouraged to dress up, wave flags and wish the British sailing team good luck, sending photos and messages for the RYA to pass onto Team GBR, and receiving a commemorative thank you to display in their clubhouse. Celebrations could include cruiser rallies, treasure hunts, dinghy pursuit races, fancy dress sail pasts, and gold themed balls, parties or barbecues. Other opportunities include medal racing day of the Sail for Gold Regatta on June 9 and of course the Olympics, when live tracking, internet and TV coverage on a scale second to none will allow clubs across the country to share all the action and atmosphere of the Games. June 9 Sail for gold medal race day July 21 Push the boat out day July 28-August 11 Olympic games really enjoyed watching in between racing. The club is planning more activities under the Sail for Gold banner in As Mark explains: It s an excellent opportunity for getting more awareness of sailing into the community at large. Have a go weekend Priory SC in Bedford boosted membership with a Sail for Gold open weekend in summer, attracting 150 visitors, and with have a go sailing sessions. The open day was pre-planned to lead into adult training courses, and these were in turn followed up with free supervised sessions run by volunteer instructors to help them get on the water. It resulted in 12 new members, plus a further five who took a course later in the season - a 65 per cent conversion rate. Sue Baker, Sail for Gold Activator at the club, says: We have struggled over the last couple of years with the economic situation and the Sail for Gold open day was the March 2012 RYA Volvo Dinghy Show 17

19 launching point of a lot of activities. There s a buzz from Sail for Gold. We put all the balloons and bunting up and as we re in a country park, people could see something was going on. It also helped with publicity because rather than it being just another Priory SC open day it was something different and the press liked that it was Sail for Gold and the build up to the Olympics. Sue says a number of dates on the club s 2012 calendar will also now use the Sail for Gold theme: It s about having fun and bringing new people in, and there s always that excitement you get when you see people enjoying your sport. Themed open days Grafham Water Centre will theme all its 2012 open days, before and immediately after the Olympics, with Sail for Gold, including taster sessions on the RYA s Push The Boat Out day. Gordon Baines, centre principal and chief instructor, says: It s a good opportunity from our point of view and for Joe Public. It s just a bit more inspiring than the usual things we do year in, year out, and it will attract more interest. Once the Olympics happens, people will think I might have a go at that.
