4 Application Considerations Optimum performance of the hydraulic module will be achieved only if proper application guidelines are followed. Where the application varies from the guidelines presented, it should be reviewed with your local Trane sales engineer. Unit sizing Hydraulic module has to be chosen in order to have enough static pressure available at a given water flow to overcome the pressure drop in the piping, the evaporator and in the terminal units. The static pressure available is given in Table 1. Unit placement Foundation A base or foundation is not required if the selected unit location is level and strong enough to support the unit s operating weight. Isolation and sound emission Structurally transmitted sound is reduced by using the four rubber pad isolators provided as standard. They have to be installed between the unit and the ground. An acoustics engineer should always be consulted on critical applications. Water drainage Ensure there is adequate drainage to drain away water from the unit in the event of shutdown or repair. Minimum water volume It is important to pay attention to the following parameters that have a great influence on the water temperature stability. Why water volume is an important parameter? The water volume is an important parameter because it allows a stable chilled water temperature and avoids short cycle operation of the compressors thus increase reliability and life span. Parameters which influence water temperature stability Number of capacity steps. Minimum time between two starts of a compressor. Water loop volume. Load fluctuations. Minimum water volume for a comfort application For comfort application we can allow water temperature fluctuation at part load. The parameter to take into account is the minimum operating time of the compressor. In order to avoid lubrication problem on a scroll compressor it must run at least 2 minutes (120 seconds) before it stops. The minimum volume can be determined by using the following formula Volume = Cooling capacity x Time / Number of steps / Specific heat / Dead band Minimum operating time = 120 seconds Specific heat = 4.18 kj / kg Dead band recommended = 3 C With these value the formula becomes Volume = Cooling capacity X 9.56 / Number of capacity steps Minimum water volume for a process application or for a chiller which has to run with ambient temperature below 0 C. For Process applications we have to minimise the water temperature fluctuation at part load. In order to avoid problems on a scroll compressor it must run at least 2 minutes (120 seconds) before it stops and the minimum time between two starts is 5 minutes (300 seconds). The water volume has to be able to provide the cooling capacity while the unit is shut down. The minimum volume can be determined by using the following formula Volume = Cooling capacity x Time / Number of steps / Specific heat / Dead band Minimum time = 180 seconds ( ) Specific heat = 4.18 kj / kg Dead band recommended = Function of the process With these value the formula becomes : Volume = Cooling capacity x 43 / Number of capacity steps / Dead band 4 ACC-PRC001E-GB
5 Selection Procedure To select a hydraulic module, the following information is required : Water flow. Static pressure required to overcome the pressure drop in the piping, the evaporator and in the terminal units. Selection example - Comfort application Unit size: CGCL 200 Nominal Delta T: 5 K Water flow: 1.8 l/s Water pressure drop in the evaporator: 25 kpa Water pressure drop in the piping: 60 kpa Water pressure drop in the terminal units: 20 kpa Total pressure drop in the air conditioning system: = 105 kpa Single pump Table 1 available pressure at the hydraulic module connection indicates that for 1.8 l/s, an HDM 1.1 single pump has an available pressure of 170 kpa. 105 kpa is required. The water flow required will be adjusted thanks to the balancing valve fitted as standard in the module. ACC-PRC001E-GB 5

7 Mechanical Specifications The hydraulic module includes the following components : Pump Centrifugal pump, impeller dynamically balanced, directly mounted on the motor shaft. Motor bearings selected to obtain a quiet operation. Two pole motor (3000 RPM), class F, IP54 is protected with temperature sensor, automatic reset. Water tank The water tank is provided with an internal anti-corrosion protection to ensure long life. Expansion tank The expansion tank accommodates volume changes due to temperature changes in the chilled water circuit. It has an internal anti-corrosion protection. Strainer Cleanable water strainer avoiding evaporator fouling. Shut off valves placed before and after the strainer allows for easy maintenance. Antifreeze protection As an option, the hydraulic module can be provided with an electric heater to avoid freezing risk down to 10 C. Chilled water pump command The chilled water pump is controlled by the control module of the chiller. The water pump contactor can be provided as an option or as a kit.
