2 PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. 4 Scope The purpose of this Practice is to specify the requirements for design and manufacture of horizontal end suction centrifugal pumps. The requirements in this Practice are modifications, additions, and/or deletions (exceptions) to the requirements in ASME B The section/paragraph numbers and the associated headings used in this Practice correspond to the ones used in ASME B73.1. Since this Practice does not take exception to all the requirements in ASME B73.1, the section/paragraph numbers in this Practice may not be sequential. Data sheets PIP RESP73-D and PIP RESP73-DM, appended, may be used to select options for ordering the pumps specified in this Practice. For general water services that fall out of the limitations of this practice use PIP RESP003H. 5 3. Alternative Design 3.1 Vendor's quotation shall conform to this Practice and purchaser's addenda. At the vendor's option, an alternate quotation may be offered if the following two conditions are met: If there is a significant process or delivery advantage, a superior or more reliable pump design may be offered. The vendor shall provide the technical justification Alternate quotation shall indicate deviations from the requirements in this Practice. Complete details of deviations shall be submitted to purchaser for review. 3.2 If vendor s quotation indicates no deviations from the requirements in this Practice, it shall be assumed by the purchaser that the pump quoted complies fully with this Practice. Deviation to the dimensional standards shall be noted in the vendor s proposal and must be noted on supporting dimensional drawings. 4. Nomenclature and Definitions Minimum Continuous Stable Flow is the minimum flow at which the pump can continuously operate without exceeding vibration limits specified by this Practice Minimum Continuous Thermal Flow is the minimum flow at which the pump can continuously operate without its operation being impaired by the temperature rise of the pumped liquid Normal Operating Point is the point at which usual operation is expected Rated Point is the operating condition for the pump performance design and the primary point that is verified during the pump performance test Rated Shaft Power is the power required by the pump shaft at specified rated operating conditions, including capacity, suction and discharge pressures, specific gravity, viscosity, and all mechanical losses (seals, gears, couplings, etc.) Rated Suction Pressure is the suction pressure of the operating conditions at the Rated Operating Point Suction Specific Speed is an index of pump suction operating characteristics determined at the BEP with the maximum diameter impeller. Suction specific speed is an indicator of the NPSH3 (defined in the following equation) for given values of capacity and rotating speed and provides an assessment of the pump s susceptibility to internal recirculation. Suction specific speed is calculated by the following equation: Process Industry Practices Page 3 of 11

6 n qs (Nss) = n(q) 0.5 /(NPSH3) 0.75 where: nqs Nss = = suction specific speed, metric suction specific speed, US Customary n = rotating speed in revolutions per minute q = flow per impeller eye, in cubic meters per second (gallons per minute) at the BEP with the maximum diameter impeller = total flow for single suction impellers = one-half total flow for double suction impellers NPSH3 = net positive suction head required in meters (feet) at the BEP for the maximum diameter impeller Note: Suction specific speed derived using cubic meters per second and meters multiplied by a factor of 51.6 is equal to suction specific speed derived using U.S. gallons per minute and feet, nqs * 51.6 = N ss. The usual symbol for suction specific speed in U.S. units is N ss Shaft Stiffness Ratio is a measure of the stiffness of the pump shaft determined from the following formula: L 3 / D 4 mm -1 (in-1 ) where: L = length of shaft from center of impeller to nearest bearing (mm) (in) D = diameter of the shaft in the seal chamber (mm) (in) Note: A lower stiffness ratio means the shaft has smaller deflections, which decreases wear of the seal. For shafts made of 4140 steel, industry experience has shown that stiffness ratios lower than 2 when using mm and 60 when using inches significantly improve seal life Solid Shaft Design is a pump shaft design in which the shaft has standard dimensions without using a sleeve Throat Bushing is a device that forms a restrictive close clearance around the sleeve (or shaft) between the seal chamber and the impeller Throttle Bushing is a device that forms a restrictive close clearance around the sleeve or shaft between a seal and the atmosphere. This is typically built into seal cartridge designs. Process Industry Practices Page 4 of 11

Design and Construction Features 5.1 Pressure and Temperature Limits Temperature Limits Modify First Sentence to Read: Maximum Allowable Temperature shall be limited to 149C (300F) on foot mounted pumps to limit misalignment due to thermal growth Hydraulic Selection Criteria Head-capacity curves that rise continuously to shutoff are preferred for all applications. If parallel operation is specified, the head rise to shutoff shall be at least 10% of the head at rated capacity. The installation of an orifice plate on the pump discharge is acceptable to obtain the 10% head rise provided that it is stated in the proposal. If this option is selected, the orifice shall be supplied by the pump vendor. If an orifice is quoted, the proposal shall include the impact on the standard curves including flow, head, HP, NPSHR, and efficiency The normal operating point flow rate shall be greater than the minimum continuous flow rate specified by the vendor and less than the flow rate at the BEP for the impeller diameter selected. Comment: The Best Efficiency Point (BEP) for the furnished impeller should be between the normal and rated operating points Pumps with constant speed drivers shall be capable of a future head increase of at least 5% at rated flow rate by installing a larger diameter impeller The minimum diameter impeller supplied shall be 105% of the minimum diameter impeller indicated on the generic pump curve for the specific pump The rated pump differential head required shall be based upon the rated differential pressure and the lowest specific gravity (SG) fluid If viscosity corrections are required, head, capacity, and efficiency corrections shall be the responsibility of the pump vendor Pumps with suction specific speeds nqs greater than 215 (Nss greater than 11,000) require specific purchaser approval. If such pumps are quoted, vendor shall include in the quotation minimum continuous flow rate, maximum operating flow rate, and a users list that demonstrates experience The vendor shall state the minimum continuous flow rate for the pump and whether the minimum continuous flow rate is based on hydraulic stability or thermal limitations. The larger of the two values shall be used in establishing the pump s minimum flow Hydrocarbon correction factors shall not be used to calculate NPSH. Process Industry Practices Page 5 of 11

8 5.2 Flanges Flanges shall be designed for through bolting if possible. If alternative methods of flange connection are required, the vendor shall supply flange details in the proposal Suction and discharge flanges shall meet the requirements of ASME/ANSI B16.1 and B16.5 for parallelism of the sealing face and the backside of the flanges Flanges shall have machined faces with a µm ( microinch) Ra finish. Finish shall be serrated-concentric or serrated-spiral. 5.3 Casing Drain Connection Boss(es) Modify to Read: Pumps shall be provided with a boss on the lowest part of the casing capable of accommodating a case drain which shall not be drilled and tapped unless a drain is specified. Comment: Socketwelded and threaded case drains may not be acceptable for process fluids that cause crevice corrosion or polymerization, etc. The Purchaser shall define those applications and the type of drain connections. When a casing drain is specified: The connection shall be largest possible for that casing up to a maximum of 3/4 NPS. Ductile iron or cast iron pump case drains shall be drilled, tapped and plugged with carbon steel plugs. Alloy pumps shall be provided with either a drilled and tapped drain with plug of the same metallurgy as the casing or a short schedule 160 nipple socket welded drain connection. If a flange connection is specified, it shall terminate at the edge and within the confines of the baseplate. The piping and flange shall be of similar metallurgy as the pump casing Auxiliary Connection Boss(es) Modify Last Sentence to Read: Unless otherwise specified, the boss(es) shall not be drilled. Comment: Vent and gauge connections are normally supplied in the piping systems and not on the pump casing Jackets There are several available methods of cooling or heating specific areas of most ASME pumps. The following are examples of acceptable methods and should be available as optional features: Process Industry Practices Page 6 of 11

9 5.3.7 Casing Bolting Seal Chamber Jacket Pump Casing Jacket Bolt On External Steam Jacket Bearing Housing Cooling The pump vendor shall recommend when these options shall be applied. Jackets for cooling or heating shall be designed so as to facilitate complete drainage for freeze protection. Note: Current philosophy is that cooling jackets are susceptible to corrosion and fouling issues. Constraining the growth of the bearing outer race may lead to shortened bearing life. At the temperature limits of this Practice, cooling jackets are of limited effectiveness. Unless otherwise specified, casing bolting for ductile iron and carbon steel pumps shall conform to ASTM A193, Grade B7 and, for alloy pumps, bolting shall conform to ASTM A193, Grade B8 Class 2 or ASTM A193, Grade B7 with PTFE coating Casing Machining 5.4 Impeller 5.5 Shaft Machined angle face of the pump case for open faced impellers shall be machined out to the maximum diameter impeller of published OEM standard curves unless authorization is given by the purchaser in writing Closed face impellers shall have a case wear ring Balance Modify to Read: Impellers shall be dynamically balanced in accordance with ISO , quality grade G6.3 after trimming to the required diameter. If the ratio of maximum outside diameter divided by the width at the periphery including the shroud(s) is less than six, a two-plane spin balance shall be performed Deflection Also, shaft deflection at the seal faces shall be less than mm (0.003 inch) from the minimum flow to end of the curve. Suppliers shall provide the stiffness ratio (L 3 /D 4 ) to the purchaser. Process Industry Practices Page 7 of 11

10 5.5.8 Solid Shaft 5.6 Shaft Sealing Pumps shall have solid shafts (no hook sleeves) when fabricated from carbon steel, 316 stainless steel, or Alloy 20 materials. Unless otherwise specified, more costly materials (e.g. monel, nickel, titanium, zirconium) may have hook shaft sleeves provided shaft stiffness limits in paragraph are not exceeded Design Hydraulically balanced seals shall be provided for sealing pressures above 5 barg (75 psig) and for fluids with relative density (specific gravity) less than If secondary seal flush API Plans 52 or 53 are furnished, a flow assisting device shall be provided with the mechanical seals. Thermal siphon systems alone do not meet this requirement Unless otherwise specified, all O-rings that may come in contact with the process fluid shall be made of the same material Seal Chamber Gland Piping connections to the process side of the seal chamber shall be at least 1/2 NPT. For seal chamber connection that cannot be 1/2 NPT due to geometry limitations, the vendor shall state in the proposal what connection sizes will be supplied. Piping connections to the atmospheric side of the seal shall be a minimum of 3/8 NPT Connections Flush, quench, drain, and vent connections shall be provided and identified by symbols cast in or stamped on the gland itself. For gland connections that cannot be 1/2 NPT due to geometry limitations, the vendor shall provide a swage connection to incorporate 1/2 inch tubing. The minimum connection size is 1/4 NPT. Additional connections may be required as a result of the seal flush arrangement specified. These connections shall also be identified Rigidity The gland shall have sufficient rigidity to avoid any distortion that would impact seal operation, including the distortion that might occur during tightening of the bolts to set the gasketing Pressurized and Unpressurized Dual Seal Requirements Unless otherwise specified, dual liquid or dry gas seals shall be provided on all pumps handling flammable and toxic fluids with a vapor pressure greater than kpa (14.7 psia) at the higher of either 38 C (100 F) or the pumping temperature. For dual liquid seals using API Plan 52, the minimum requirement for the support facilities include: A minimum 10 liters (3 gallon) seal pot mounted on a separate stand with pressure switch/transmitter and orifice vent. For dual liquid seals using API Plan 53, the minimum requirement for the support facilities include: A minimum 10 liters (3 gallon) seal pot mounted on a separate stand with a level switch/transmitter. Unless otherwise specified, all seal pots shall be stainless steel and equipped with the following: Armored liquid level indicator, Process Industry Practices Page 9 of 11

12 Stainless steel cooling coil Pressure gauge. Side entry supply and return nozzles For pressurized dual dry gas seals, buffer gas control panel should include: Filtration to 5 microns absolute Pressure regulator Flow indicator Pressure or flow switch/transmitter For non-pressurized dual dry gas seals, also include: Connection to vapor recovery system with a check valve, restriction orifice, and pressure gauge Pressure switch/transmitter upstream of the orifice Vendor shall advise if a seal flush cooler or other means of seal cooling to maintain acceptable temperature in the seal chamber is required. 5.7 Bearings, Lubrication, and Bearing Frame See PIP REEP005 for lubrication details. 5.8 Materials of Construction Unless otherwise specified, the vendor shall furnish mill test reports (MTR) for pressure casing parts, impellers, and shafts for the heat numbers from which the material is supplied For low temperature pumping applications see API 610, Low Temperature, for impact testing requirements Design, materials, casting factors, and the quality of any welding shall be equal to those required by Section VIII Division 1 of the ASME Code. General Information 7.2 Tests (f) Performance In addition to the conditions specified, any pump requiring an NPSH test shall also be performance tested Retesting If a pump is disassembled for any reason other than performance, retesting is not required. 7.4 Driver Selection Driver shall be sized in accordance with Table A, as a minimum, unless the above considerations require a larger driver. If this latter condition exists, the vendor shall state the proposed driver size in the proposal Driver power shall, as a minimum, be equal to the rated shaft power at the rated point multiplied by the percentage listed in Table A.
