ABOUT US Elements Works was born in the summer of 2014, with the initial goal to design and build advanced systems containing state or the art renewable sources like the wave energy converters by 40South Energy; the company wanted to act as a single point of contact for the development and realization of projects, from authorizations to EPCM to O&M. As a first example, the company helped in the development and construction of the first wave energy park in Marina di Pisa which uses the H24 machines by 40South Energy (for which Elements Works also contrinuted the design and construction of the control and power conversion modules). That plant was later sold to Enel Green Power. During the same period Elements Works conceived the Blu Marina by Elements community microgrid, including H24 wave energy devices and partially funded through crowdfunding. The prototype project was designed around the Marina di Pisa harbour, but then the project has not yet taken off due to the slow pickup rate for crowdfunding in Italy. In a second phase started in the fall of 2015, Elements Works has expanded its operational capabilites for advanced marine services, acquiring 4 boats and state of the art instrumentation (like umbelicals, ROVs, precision GPS location, hydrophones, an advanced small dredgin unit) and begus offering such services to several clients. In a third phase, starting from 2017, the company started develping innovative technologies and later patenting them. The first products for which patent applications have been filed and products have already been commercialized are underwater barriers (among which highly innovative jellyfish nets) and underwater cultivation systems which provide a disruptive approach to underwater agriculture; the first application has been to Posidonia Oceanica reforestation off Elba Island in Italy. There are additional disruptive technologies under development, which will be launched in the coming months. Dr. Michele Grassi is the founder, CEO and CTO of Elements Works. He obtained a degree in pure mathematics from Scuola Normale Superiore and later obtained in three years the PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Immediately after the doctorate he was called as a researcher in mathematics at Scuola Normale Superiore, and shortly afterwards obtained a full position as Researcher in mathematics at the Department of Mathematics in Pisa University. To pursue intellectually more challenging activities, he initially asked for temporary leave from the University and later resigned from his position there. During 2008 he founded 40South Energy Limited in London, to develop and commercialize an innovative wave energy converter (recently Enel Green Power and Invitalia Ventures invested more than 2M of in the 40South Energy initiative). During 2014 he founded Elements Works SRL in Pisa, Italy.
Elements Works offers advanced products: - Innovative (patent pending) Jellyfish nets and underwater barriers - Innovative (patent pending) underwater cultivation systems underwater harbour environmental works works rov or hydrophone surveys Underwater barriers environmentally mooring systems compatible support for environmental impact assesments, monitoring of particlarly important biological species Underwater cultivation systems PRECISION BATHYMETRIES INSTALLATION AND OPERATION OF BUOYS AND WAVE MEASURING DEVICES DREDGING AND RECONSTRUCTION OF BEACHES Elements Works offers advanced services: - Environmental analisys and monitoring (including biological and hydroacoustic analisys used in underwater construction projects) - Operation and maintenance of marine installations (like wave energy converters) and data gathering and transmission platforms - Installation of underwater reforestation systems (for example, those of Posidonia Oceanica) - Electrical and electronic design services for complex systems (or example the power conversion components of wave energy conversion systems) - Advamced, icrogrid design services, with the integration of wave energy, mini wind and storage systems.
UNDERWATER CULTIVATION Elements Works offers underwater cultivation systems which are innovative, with an almost negligible content of non-recyclable materials, and costs and installation time lower with respect to competing solutions. Elements Works has patented (PATENT PENDING) an innovative platform for underwater coltivation which provides a stable support also on sandy floor. The system developed by Elements Works minimizes the inclusion of foreign materian in the underwater environment and performs very well in diverse situations, like reforestation projects for Posidonia Oceanica or underwater cultivation of sea urchin The system furthermore allows a significant part of the installation work to be performed above the waterline, minimizing costs, duration and riscks associated with the installation. The first installation based on the Elements Works system has been positioned in Golfo Stella, Elba Island, as part of a pilot project of technology comparison. This project was commissioned by ASA SpA, to verify the state of the art technologies which are available at the present time. The system which in the end will be selected will be used for the reforestation project associated with the brine dispersion pipeline associated with a large desalination plant to be built by ASA SpA at the site.
JELLYFISH NETS AND UNDERWATER BARRIERS Elements Works offers innovative jellyfish nets and barriers, self-adapting to tidal range or varying water depth, useful for varied coastal lines, economical and flexible, easy to handle also by local personnel, which moreover can help fight coastal erosion Elements Works has patented (PATENT PENDING) an innovative barrier which adapts itself automatically to a varying water depth, therefore performing well in a diverse set of conditions: water depth at the site varies from point to point there are significant tidal ranges the barrier stays in place also in the presence of significnat swell. The barriers can be used as jellyfish nets, to create confined spaces useful for elders or people with disabilities, or to help in projects for the mitigation of coastal erosion, as an alternative or in conjunction with fixed or wave blocking barriers. Our barriers have a streamlined uppersection, thus allowing for the passage of emergency surface vessels. Modularity allows for the installation in all coastal areas, both rocky or sandy ones, creating natural swimming pools inside the open water where you can safely swim protected from stingers like jellyfish. Quick installation and removal allows also the barrier to be kept in place only when desired or needed, storing it in a dry location on land while not installed. Simplicity of installation and removal: after a brief training or even by simply reading the user manual, assembly and removal can be executed by local personnel, even several times in a week depending on local conditions. Elements Works, always very sensitive to the environment, has designed a jellyfish net that does not obstruct plancton by using an 8mm net (but of course a smaller net can be used in sites with specific risks associated with small organisms); this allows for the passage of spores, eggs and larvae thus keeping the coastal area alive but nevertheless protected wrom stingers like Pelagia noctiluca or Carybdea marsupialis.
BATHYMETRIES, DREDGING AND NOURISHMENTS Elements Works has the expertiese and the equipment to conduct bathymetries, dredging and nourishments while keeping a very small environmental and visual footprint. We can operate also in situations where traditional approached cannot be applied. By using a small high-tech barge designed and built by Elements Works, controlled electronically and powered by an efficient dredging pump, we can open the access of small harbours and keept it like that. Other situations where we can provide added value is when the touristic and/or environmental value of the location would not allow for the use of traditional dredging units: our dredging equipment is incospicuous and quiet and can be operated while the rest of the activities keep running with minimal interference. We have precision bathimetric hardware and software, with which we can produce detailed maps of harbours, canals, lakes. This equipment is used to support the dredging and nourishment activities, or can be applied independently to other projects. We can for example offer turn-key monitoring and volume calculation services to dredging projects where we are not involved, where we provide an independend assesment.
ELEMENTS WORKS DIVING Elements works Diving provides advanced marine services, with an added value where the technical contribution (both from en engineering and a biological point of view) is important - Underwater environmental studies, also with the support of advanced instrumentation like multiparametric probes, ROVs, state of the art hydrophones, bottom profilers, electrically propelled surface vessels for particularly protected areas. - Installation operation and maintenance of floating or underwater platforms, for collecting data or to produce energy. - Intallation, operation and maintenance of underwater barriers (like jellyfish nets or containement barriers) or surface barriers (like lines of buoys) - Scientific underwater inspections, from shallow to deep water, both inland and at sea, with the use of ROVs or of highly trained divers BIO-SUB TRAINING COURSES CLASSES CAN BE HELD ALSO AT YOUR SCHOOL, CLUB OR JIM. WE RELEASE INTERNATIONALLY RECOCGNIZED DIVING LICENSES. THE STANDARD CONTENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIVING LICENSE IS COMPLEMENTED WITH A ROBUST DOSE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIOLOGICAL NOTIONS
ELECTRICAL AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, PROJECT MANAGEMENT Electrical and software design for complex underwater systems, both in the area of electrical energy conversion and in the field of mechatronics Elements Works can design and build electricity conversion systems, or electricity storage and distribution solutions in complex systems including several energy sources and sinks. The company can also offer turn-key services where the apparatus is also operated and maintained by Elements Works, discharghing the client from all tasks. Design and construction of control systems based on PLC and SCADA, to monitor and control remotely complex mechatronic or power conversion systems, both in air and underwater. Elements Works can build for the client advanced control systems, based on ad hoc control logic, to handle complex mechatronic systems. It can also develop custom SCADA systems for them, possibly with tiered interfaces depending on the user who will handle the SCADA. Project Management Elements Works offers Project Mamagement services, using modern cloud based platforms, to handle complex projects for the clinet both in engineering development and in marine operations.
