Harmful effects include burns and permanent damage to the airways, including the nose, throat and lungs. Skin Contact / Absorption.... Will cause skin burns and permanent skin damage. Eye Contact Will cause burns and permanent injury to eye tissue. May also cause blindness. Ingestion.... Swallowing this material may be harmful or cause death. Harful effects include burns and permanent damage to the digestive tract, including the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain and vomiting of blood. Blood loss throughdamaged tissue can lead to low blood pressure and shock. Exposure Limits... Ceiling Exposure Limit: 2mg/m³ (ACGIH 2005). Section 04 - First Aid Measures Inhalation..... Remove victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration only if breathing has stopped. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek immediate medical attention. Skin Contact / Absorption.. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation occurs or persists. Eye Contact Check for and remove any contact lenses.flush immediately with water for at least 20 minutes. Forcibly hold eyelids apart to ensure complete irrigation of eye tissue. Seek immediate medical attention Ingestion.... Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean victim forward to prevent breathing in vomit. Give a cup of water to dilute. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious or convulsing person. Seek immediate medical attention. Additional Information Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage. Contact with metals such as aluminum, tin, zinc may form explosive hydrogen gas. Section 06 - Accidental Release Measures Leak / Spill Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Completely contain spilled material with dikes or sandbags and prevent run-off into ground or surface waters or sewers. Recover as much material as possible into containers for disposal. Recovered solids or liquids may be sent to a licensed reclaimer or disposed of in a permitted waste management facility. Deactivating Materials Remaining material may be neutralized with dilute hydrochloric or acetic acid. Neutralization products, both liquid and solid, must be recovered for disposal. Section 07 - Handling and Storage Handling Procedures Use proper equipment for lifting and transporting all containers. Use sensible industrial hygiene and housekeeping practices. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid all situations that could lead to harmful exposure. When diluting with water, slowly add caustic potash solution to cold water with mixing as heat will be produced during dilution and to avoid spattering.

Materials that react with potassium hydroxide and easily ignitable materials should not be stored in the same area. Keep containers closed when not in use and when empty. Inspect periodically for deficiencies such as damage or leaks. Contact of caustic potash cleaning solutions with food and beverage products (in enclosed vessels or spaces) can produce lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide gas. Protective Equipment Section 08 - Personal Protection and Exposure Controls Eyes..... Chemical goggles, full-face shield, or a full-face respirator is to be worn at all times when product is handled. Contact lenses should not be worn; they may contribute to severe eye injury. Respiratory... Where concentrations exceed or are likely to exceed 2 mg/m 3 use a NIOSH approved high-efficiency particulate filter with full face piece or self-contained breathing apparatus. Follow any applicable respirator use standards and regulations. Gloves... Impervious gloves of chemically resistant material (rubber, neoprene or PVC) should be worn at all times. Will absorb carbon dioxide from the air to form potassium carbonate. Incompatibility Reacts vigorously or violently with many organic and inorganic chemicals such as: acids, acrolein, acrylonitrile, chlorinated hydrocarbons (ie: 1,2 dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene), chlorine dioxide, maleic anhydride, nitroethane, nitroparaffins, 2-nitrophenol, nitropropane, phosphorus, potassium persulphate, and tetrahydrofuran (containing peroxides). Sensitization Not available Chronic/Acute Effects..... Prolonged or repeated contact with dilute solutions may cause drying and cracking of skin and possible skin damage. Prolonged exposure to the eye can cause severe burns and possible blindness. Inhalation at concentrations higher than 2mg/m³ may cause burns and tissue damage in upper respiratory tract. Pnuemonitis can result from inhalation at high concentrations. Severe scarring of throat can occur after swallowing. Death may result from ingesting product. Mice painted with a 3 to 6% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution for 46 weeks developed skin tumors. This study was conducted in 1925 and the adequacy of the test and its design are unknown. No conclusions can be drawn from this study. Potassium hydroxide is not listed on the IARC, OSHA or NTP carcinogen lists.
