Environmental Gas Canister sampling and analysis EQLF, Cambridge, July 20 th 2017 Right Solutions Right Partner 1 Right Solutions Right Partner
Overview Direct soil gas and sub-slab gas measurements are increasingly used to measure the inhalation risk from Volatile Organic Compounds and Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons. This webinar will focus on the ease of use and flexibility of Silonite coated gas canisters for field sampling and the robustness of the subsequent laboratory analysis of these compounds. 2 Right Solutions Right Partner
Soil Gas and Sub-slab sampling Techniques - Pumped Tubes - Passive samplers - Tedlar bags - Gresham tubes - Summa canisters/ Silonite coated canisters - Bottlevacs (silonite coated) 3 Right Solutions Right Partner
Tubes - Advantages and disadvantages Provide Low detection limits, if high volumes sampled Can work for compounds above Boiling Point of 220 C Well characterised for mid range volatiles eg BTEX However Require additional field measurements (temperature, pressure, humidity) Require calibrated pumps An idea of compounds likely to be encountered An idea of likely concentrations to be encountered Range of compounds in similar concentrations Can not readily be re-analysed 4 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gresham Tubes and Tedlar bags Advantages and Disadvantages Gresham tubes Compact and easy to use, allowing samples to be taken under pressure Not suitable for very volatile or reactive analytes Tedlar bags Relatively cheap and a whole air sample is taken. But have short holding time, require pumping, not as inert as canisters As a rule of thumb they are a ppmv devise 5 Right Solutions Right Partner
Summa or Silonite, Canister or Bottlevacs - Summa canisters have Nickel and Chrome oxide electropolished coating on the inside - Silonite canisters have a fused phase similar to that used in a GC column - Bottlevacs are the glass versions of the silonite canisters - All take whole gas sample - All are supplied to site under vacuum ready to use 6 Right Solutions Right Partner
Canisters advantages and disadvantages Advantages - Easy to use - Wide range of compounds - Wide range of concentrations - Repeat analyses if required - Different analysis options from a single sample - Whole sample collected and analysed - Long holding times However - without heating limited to compounds up to BP 220 C 7 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters Principle Canister is provided clean and ready to use from the lab Canister is under vacuum Vacuum is temporarily broken and sample taken Sampling time can be - Instant with a grab sample - Minutes for subslab or soil gas - Over hours or days for indoor, ambient or perimeter air Analysis is based on standard US-EPA TO-15 method for VOC s (66 compounds reported). Typical detection limits 1.5ppbv. TPHCWG C5-C12 including Aliphatic and Aromatic splits available 8 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters Ease of Use Nearly all attachments are push fit No need to measure time No need to measure flow rates No breakthrough due to high concentrations 9 Right Solutions Right Partner
On site Canister is received under vacuum 10 Right Solutions Right Partner
On site Soil gas and subslab sampling train 11 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters - Sampling Flexibility Soil gas set-up 12 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters - Sampling Flexibility Sub-slab set-up 13 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters - Sampling Flexibility Ambient air set-up Sampling device can be set for 4 or 8 hours with a 1.41 canister For sampling periods up to 3 days a 6 litre canister is used Sampling device is weather proof Can be used for perimeter, ambient air and indoor air monitoring 14 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters - Sampling Flexibility Helium diffusive samplers 15 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters - Sampling Flexibility Soil gas Sub-slab Ambient air indoor and perimeter monitoring Personal monitors 16 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters Analytical Excellence 17 Right Solutions Right Partner
Canister cleanliness 18 Right Solutions Right Partner
Gas Canisters Summary - Whole air sample - Wide range of compounds - Multiple analyses possible - Wide range of concentrations - Low detection limits - Wide range of applications - Easy to use 19 Right Solutions Right Partner
