Ski Bus (Suusabuss) Estonian Ski Association The Ski bus project was started by Estonian Ski Association for the season The project is offering schools professionally guided ski lessons for beginners. We invite pupils and teachers in frame of physical education to come out from gym for cross-country skiing to show them that it is not difficult, but a lot of fun. They will have an basic grounding for cross-country skiing, games and mini-competitions. Schools receive information about The Ski bus via internet, through Estonian school sport association, from local education authority, from newspaper add or from flyers distributed in Statoil stations. Information about the project reached the target-groups very well and last seasons ( ) schedule was almost fully booked. Professionally guided ski lessons in schools for pupils and teachers. The project is managed by ski a instructor hired by Estonian Ski Association. The instructor is using a big Mercedes-Benz van filled with ski equipment for rental and ski-maintenance supplies. Every school which participate receives a certificate and ski book for beginners. All booking information, terms and schedule is available on the special Ski bus website. School pupils (age 6 12) and teachers. On season (Ski bus projects second season), ski lessons in 30 schools (lessons nearly on every snowy school day on winter season), pupils participated per season Season is the third season for project and it is planned to continue. With this project we encourage teachers to carry out ski lessons in schools also by themselves. Similar projects are easily transferable to other ski associations. We and also Scandinavian countries have good experience with such projects and we kindly share the knowledge to beginners. We have been consulted Latvians already. Financially this project is supported by the Cultural Capital Fund and Ministry of Culture, Ski equipment sponsor is Patrol OY (Swix and Fisher), ski wax sponsor is SkiGo and fuel partner is Statoil.

Teach the teachers to ski Finnish Ski Association As an induction we like to think that the task should be easy; all our «customers» go to school we should have a clear idea where to target, however kids do not decide what they do > influence teachers! This is a combined project for all FIS disciplines. Intention is to bring some change to gym lessons at school by providing and offering alternative and fun things to do on skis. Moreover Alpine skiing has established its status in a school environment by becoming an official part of finnish lower grade curriculum from now on. Not only have we created an discipline guidebook to teachers to carry with them but we have recorded a summary of the lesson modules on the online site for Ministry of Education for all teachers to look up. Ski jump is to follow the suit. In cross-country we have managed to encourage schools to buy sets of skis for everyone s use for due short winters parents are not that willing to invest in equipment. To provide teachers more ideas, confidence, creativity and skills when conducting gym lessons on skis to get more children involved in FIS snow disciplines. Quality has been secured by excellent communications via different channels. The evaluation has been done after each season and learnings taken into account. Also feedback sought and received from teachers and pupils. Teachers on lower grade schools (pupils on lower grade schools 6 13 years). Cross country started project since 2005 (ski jump parts were included 2007) and has reached about active teachers so far and alpine starts this season as a brand new project. Most important thing is: A guidebook «Werneri» for teachers has been produced including now all FIS snow disciplines which highlights the overall importance of snow sports. This guidebook is basic for teachers education and they get it to school after education course We like to think that all kids would love to play in snow if only the adults have the courage to show how and we have made that bridge to cross a little bit shorter and lower. Skiing is not about going 2 kms that way and coming back the same. It is about playing in hills, skiing backwards, it is about testing your doublepole, how long you can go or challenging your balance by skiing with only one ski even on a jump. All this we have tried to teach to teachers to pass on to kids. Skiing is more popular than ever, both downhill and cross country but snow tends to be a problem. Easy to copy anywhere. Just need to be aware how to approach school world in each country as it can be a sensitive topic to launch it «we teach teachers». Very important to get official approval from the Ministry of Education or similar to get the relevant status and recognition for the project. This does not need to be a expensive project. You should also charge a small fee from teachers/schools for participation (10 20 EUR/person and include some material in it). Ministry of Education should be easy to involve as you are really giving a tool not a burden, perhaps they can support with some educative material you re producing. Definitively a longterm investment and should be done. We can not always influence the kids what they do at school, so we need to target the teachers to help them be better offering skiing at gym lessons. As in any case, what the kids learn at school is a long-term benefit. School has a big impact how active kids are on their leisure time.

Snow Child s Play (Schnee kinderleicht Bewegtes Land) German Ski Association Implementation of an age-appropriate and free of cost activity in the snow (mainly alpine / cross country) by a ski club or ski school in cooperation with at least one kindergarten; preferable and ideal is a transfer of the activity-offer in a long-term cooperation between the ski club and kindergarten in sense of a year-round movement-offering (even during summer months!). The pedagogic concept is built in 6 successive snow modules, identified by varied physical activities in the snow in combination with cognitive activities (e.g. science, craft works) and development of interactions. The priority of teaching is the joy of movement, the sport performed with each other, as well as the desire for further snow activities. Ski sports are made approachable through initial and simple experiences of movements. In addition to the kinder-ski-garten (Skitty World) the intention is to offer more snow activities (games, sledding, etc.) with different tools. The cognitive contents and suggestions will be made by the kindergarten teachers during the project. The project responsible will provide the appropriate and adequate information and teaching materials. Qualified management of snow courses by instructors of the German Ski Association (DSV) and ski club or DSV ski schools. The cooperation between kindergarten and club offers an ideal foundation for a successful collaboration, as it combines professional competencies of all partners (club, kindergarten, city, municipality, association, Science, Sports industry) in a synergistic fashion. Construction and development of cooperation between the ski clubs and kindergarten. Talent development in ski clubs. Early intervention and motor skill education. Impacting lifestyle and specific interests. Integration work. Strengthening of social skills (personality development, transmission of values). Setting a quality framework design by DSV / Skijugend, tested by the national youth organisation and DSV-national education teams. Support by applying for grants to regional sites with concept testing. Development of standard practice and theory documents. Documentation of the snow courses by the respective project leader. Course led by qualified instructors and trainers. Accompanying university-evaluation process 2008/09 confirms success. Children aged 3 to 6 years, kindergarten and kindergarten teachers, grandparents, parents, children and families with migration background, ski clubs, ski schools, tourism and ski industry successful pilot project in Isny with WSV Isny, city Isny and a kindergarten Participants 2009: 63 children and 60 new members in the ski club to the end of the project. Evaluation results for 2009 based on questionnaires, in cooperation with the TU Munich. in 2010, enlargement of the project in several kindergarten in Isny. More locations in 2010: West German Ski Association and Ski Association Brandenburg per year Long-term development and strengthening of cooperation between ski club and kindergarten (40 co-operations until 2014). Initial contacts: children are getting enthusiasm for snow sports early. Children and parents are informed early about the activities in the ski clubs and thus the clubs gain new members. Project success will be measured by the accompanying evaluation. Basically, the project is also convertible for other National Ski Associations, if similar structures are present. The project partners: ski clubs, ski schools, kindergarten and public partners from the community, politics and sports industry are basic requirements for a successful implementation of the project. Project funding by DSV / Skijugend and German Sports Youth, fund raising project application. Useful synergy effects through the regional project partner ski club (e.g. material and instructors), kindergarten (materials and care), community (e.g. infrastructure) and the sports industry / ski lifts (material, slopes) etc. Public relations through the media of the German Ski Association: homepage, newsletter (distribution: ) and members magazine DSV active (distributor: ). Regional publicity through community (e.g. patronage of the mayor, regional press) and information flyer.

Snow Day Hungarian Ski Federation The organizers moved people during the Snow Day in 7 different winter sports at a Hungarian ski resort with 5 slopes (4,5 km) between 311 m and 509 m sea level. Sports like: alpine skiing, alpine and freestyle snowboarding, telemark skiing, nordic skiing, biathlon, dog sleding and additional activities such as winter skill games, ice carving. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers made a 24 hour-iong so called Jump Jam. There is a 4-chair lift (757 m long) on ski resort and the 40 snow canons promoted the successful execution. Move Hungarian people to slopes, introduce and involve them to winter sports. Focusing on kids under age of 10 and also recruiting future ski families at Hungarian home land. All day event with very good snow condition (artificial and natural), busy daily schedule, high media attention (5 TV channels appeared), valuable awards and a 4 hour long alpine ski event from age of 4 to 80. Lower and upper elementary school students and youngsters with their families people participated on the Snow Day including 700 kids under age of HUF ( 3 700). It is only the direct organizing cost without utility and facility managing costs. Event income included HUF (12 ) per person entry fee for the entire venue, all events and for all day, but it was free under age of 10. Very outstanding experience and good feedbacks. The organizers and sponsors together would like to continue in the future seasons. Organizers received many substantial and beneficial suggestions and advices for future consideration. Entirely adaptable to other associations, to other countries from traditional alpine nations to flat land nations. Organizers proved that this event can be applied to other non-alpine countries, they strongly recommend to plan and manage similar activities anywhere. Practical, the project can be carried out with volunteers and appropriate sponsoring background. The Snow Day organizer worked with 50 volunteers during the event and many of them assisted the pre-works also. The Snow Day project has strong values, as the aspect of sport development and sponsor interest, satisfaction together. The national TV channel M1 broadcasted Snow Day event in the main evening news. More then 15 different websites promoted Snow Day before, during and after the event such as news, sport pages and sport organization sites (Hungarian Olympic Committee, National Sport Federation).

Skilly Day (Ubi Banca Goggi Ski Club) Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali Skilly Day is the last joyful step of our articulated non-competitive programs to widespread ski practice: Ski courses for beginners (30%). Ski courses for intermediate (41%). Ski courses for expert children but without a race vocation (15%). Ski programs for race promotion (14%). Skilly Day is also the final act of our ski race contest called Ski Challenge, 8 races which aim to be like courtyard games on the snow. They are an opportunity for children who aren t yet in a ski team to make experience, without having to change resort and to feel enthusiasm and passion for winter sports. They are races without ranking list, the child gets to know his time in every run and checks his improvement. Among the most amusing there re the Carnival masquerade parallel rave and the Epiphany speed race. Skilly Day is a special event made up with 1) Individual race (with very funny gate runs such as gymkhanas). 2) Team race (the skiers are split into many teams by the organisation and a special ranking is made). 3) Lunch altogether «open air» with music entertainment. 4) Rich prize giving ceremony. Every child is nominated and steps on the podium and receives an award, a gadget (t-shirt and a jacket) and his photo in action. 5) Rich prize giving ceremony of the winners of the «Fifth Skilly s Drawing and writing competiotion» 6) Torchlight procession, a last run in the moonlight with kids, parents, ski instructors and the mascot Skilly! Why a Skilly Day? Because the core of our operating is the child with his emotional, psychological, motivational and motoric qualities. We want to get in touch with the child s feelings and through playful strategies to strengthen his self-confidence and to keep high his passion for snow, mountains life! To promote our bench mark, mountain environment is ESSENTIAL for a complete child growth. To communicate passion towards winter sports in youngsters and their families. Skilly Day is a big event coming out of the well-planned structure of Goggi Ski Team, a 57 year old forge of big champions. Our organization is based on 4 steps 1) C.A.S. programs, offering a good variety of course length, timetables, resorts (age 4 14). 2) Speedy programs or racing promotion, including snowboard and cross-country experience (age 8 14). 3) Racing program (first step: age 11 16, second step: age 14 18, third step: age 20 80). 4) International (FIS) race program (age 19 24). Children aged 4 14 and their families. Our motto is «from 4 to 88 years old» because passion for winter sports is a longlife worth spirit. 420 children and their families, the «Skilly Day» event collects the young participants to our C.A.S. programs and Speedy programs, C.A.S. is a project founded by the Italian Olympic Committee and means «Sport Start-Up Centre», Speedy is the name of our race promotion project We can report an ever-increasing growth of participants to our programs: 50% of Skilly Day costs are covered by sponsors and the remaining 50% by children s participations fees. These years we have given very nice gadgets to our young protagonists, succeeding in creating a special look for our activities. The Goggi Ski Team has got 650 card carries and the Italian ski team with more FISI registrations. All the children who take part in the Skilly Day are FISI associates. In its 57 years long history the Goggi Ski Team has always tried to promote long lasting passion and enthusiasm towards mountain environment and sports. Its aim has always been on one hand to feed up the Olympic Spirit and on the other hand to help in educating young generations and making them capable to live their life with determination, social commitment and fair-play. 2004/05, 109 children 2005/06, 130 children 2006/07, 133 children 2007/08, 160 children 2008/09, 270 children 2009/10, 367 children We already have a twinnig with a ski school of the resort of Saint Moritz. Ski School Saint Moritz is a school which operates in 3 locations areas and it shares our same philosophy. A great attention to communicating enthusism, to create family involment, to organize races with a very amusing and educational program.

Children s Ski Club (Barnas Skiklubb) The Norwegian Ski Association Barnas-skiklubb.no was launched i This is a website dedicated to the National Ski Associations children projects. All projects aimed at children 12 years and younger, regardless of discipline, are linked to CSC. Current projects Online Ski Distance Registration (OSDR). The children create a personal profile where they register all the ski related activities they are doing. They can qualify for Children s Ski Pin. Schools can join The School on Skis Competition, and clubs can join The Club Battle. The best schools and clubs are listed on the website. Organizer Equipment Packs for schools, clubs and families. Online skiing game for children. Activity Library (aktivitetsbanken.no) with tips and ideas for parents, coaches and teachers. Skiing at School, part of a joint project with other sport disciplines. Stands with various children s activities at major national and international ski events around the country. We are now using FIS SnowKidz actively in the activities. The Ski bread is a result of a combined effort between Din Baker (Bakery) and NSA. From each sold bread 0,30 Krone ( 0.04) did last year give NOK to Barnas Skiklubb. Din Baker do also have a nutrition awareness project which we are using in our school projects. Motivate children to do skiing. The Children s Ski Club was started as a tool to help us reach NSA s major goal: We want «many, skilled and happy skiers». Children 5 12 years, parents, families, coaches in ski clubs and teachers in schools. Every year children are using Online Ski Distance Registration (OSDR) children are attending various activities organized through Children s Ski Club (CSC) stands held at major ski events in Norway every winter (6-7 events). About 200 schools are participating in The School on Skis Competition, and about 150 clubs are participating in The Club Battle every year. Norwegian schools are organizing School Skiing Days for more than children, and Children s Ski Pins are sold annually. 1 5 mill. 2 mill. (NOK) All of our projects are long term projects, and they are being developed continuously. Skiing as a sport is differently organized in different countries, but CSC s activities could easily be implemented in other nations organisations. Colgate has been a major sponsor and supporter for many years. They are covering the costs involved with the production of the various equipment required by the project. Colgate have a campaign running in supermarkets where they are promoting the use of Ski Distance Registration cards (a printed version of the OSDR). Beside the already mentioned actions we have no commercial promotion of our CSC projects.

Naltar Ski School Ski Federation of Pakistan To attract children to snow sport, we have established a Ski School in Naltar. A comprehensive campaign has been launched to convince the parents, especially the local ones, to spare their kids for ski training. Whereas the supervised skiing facility is made available to the local children throughout the season, kids from other parts of the country are also called in groups for two-weak training and they are provided with boarding/ lodging on nominal charges while ski equipment and coaching is provided free of cost. They are given airlift transportation in collaboration with Pakistan Air Force to the training venue and back. Local kids after undergoing the training for full season are exposed to ski competitions within their respective are categories, whereby 16 kids are finally selected to be sponsored for next complete year. During sponsored period these kids are provided with schooling, regular medical care and additional meals to add nutritional value. The project has produced a number of good ski players in recent times, who in turn now further providing training to newcomers free of cost. The project besides indigenous efforts on raising sponsorship from Corporate Sector, have also received help from Japanese Ski Federation which donated sufficient quantity of used ski equipment. Provide opportunity to those children from snowy area of Naltar who could not ski due to financial / resource limitations. Provide opportunity to those children who belong to dry/ desert areas by giving them training and exposure to skiing. The project s efficacy can be determined by the fact that one of its trained skier Mr. Abbas has qualified for WOG 10 as a regular entrant, which would mark the first ever participation of Pakistan in the mega event. Moreover, in the last National Women Ski Championship a girl from Sindh (hot/dry Province) won the best skier trophy. Moreover, despite being highly conservative, the local people have willingly agreed to allow ski training to their three young girls. is devided into three categories age-wise: 1 st : 3 to 6 year 2 nd : 6 to 10 year 3 rd : 10 to 14 years old More than 300 local children are availing skiing facilities throughout the season, besides 100 kids from other parts of the country who are exposed to skiing and training for about 15 days. Most encouraging fact about the project is that boys & girls trained through it are voluntarily part of the training cycle extended to the newcomers. In order to maintain the enthusiasm of good skiers towards skiing, efforts are made to assimilate them in main-stream by arranging jobs for them in the Government, Semi-Government or Corporate Sector where they can continue skiing pursuits. Our project being a successful venture, can be taken up as a role model by National Ski Associations of other ski-developing countries like our Himalayan neighbour Nepal. The project is commercially viable to a fair extent, as requisite sponsorships can be arranged to sustain it with a bit of consistent efforts. Moreover, establishment expenses get invariably minimized owing to the fact that earlier-trained are giving training to the newcomers, thanks to natural training cycle. With consistent efforts now sponsors are willing to associate themselves for promotion of their own products with this enthralling ski sport which is all set to establish itself as the only winter sport in the country. Last two National Championships were given live coverage by our most prominent local channel namely Geo Super.

Healthy Hometowns Program U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Maine Winter Sports Center s «Healthy Hometowns» program introduces skiing to communities that do not have resources to provide youth programming, as well as enhancing opportunities in communities with existing ski programs. In the fall each year we contact schools, recreation departments and ski clubs in Maine to encourage them to participate in our programs. We use two portable trailers each stocked with 70 ski sets that are scheduled in participating communities for twoweek blocks of time. During that period we coordinate with community leaders (teachers, program directors, park rangers and ski club members) to ski with local youth. We provide a Ski Leader s Education Workshop to those community leaders interested in organizing ski programs in their communities. This workshop focuses on fundamental ski games, drills, and activities for youth, as well as training on the use of our equipment trailers. Also provided is a Ski Curriculum Guide for communities to develop weekly ski programming in a school-based or extracurricular setting. Upon completion of one of our programs, local leaders are provided a follow-up packet including evaluation forms, information on establishing funding, equipment, and trails in their communities. We also coordinate follow-up visits with local elite skiers. We work with schools to provide transportation to local ski venues so kids can ski after school and information about affordable seasonal ski rentals for youth. During major events (World Cups, World Juniors, National Championships) we provide a lesson portfolio to area schools to engage students and teachers in the world of skiing and coordinate transportation to the events so entire classes can experience the excitement. To empower communities to develop Nordic skiing resources and programming for youth. Ski trailers scheduled in two-week blocks throughout Maine. Each December we host a Ski Leader s Education Workshop. We provide 2 4 sessions with a MWSC coach or elite skier. Evaluations distributed to participating communities. Yearly improvements made based on evaluations. Follow-up includes assistance on building ski programs, trail building, and funding sources for purchasing/renting ski equipment. All evaluation and follow-up is targeted toward building sustainable ski programs state-wide. Schools, municipal recreation departments, and youth-focused groups throughout Maine. Ages The program brings youth participants to the sport of Nordic skiing each winter, provides over contact hours with kids on snow, and provides seasonal equipment rentals for an additional youth skiers. Through the «Healthy Hometowns» program we have a presence in clubs and school-based programs in 96 different Maine communities. Total Start-up Expenses: $ Annual Expenses: $ Annual Income: $ Liong-term enthusiasm Our program provides an exciting introduction to skiing and tools for communities to build sustainable ski programs. Through the yearly rental program, training of community volunteers and helping to build trails and clubs our program aims to keep kids skiing into adulthood. Young skiers interested in competition are invited to MWSC s youth racing program. Through these initiatives the numbers of Maine skiers has increased by the thousands. Our program consists of easily replicable components, which any National Ski Association could implement. Each piece of our program has been well documented and could be understood and adapted to fit anywhere, on any scale. This program is largely self-sufficient with revenue from the ski rentals. In addition, our program is highly visible across Maine and has attracted corporate sponsorship opportunities. We have a detailed sponsorship packet (available upon request) outlining the advertising benefits for participating businesses or organizations. The Healthy Hometowns program generates a large amount of interest in skiing and therefore a lot of local, state, and national publicity. Over fifty articles related to the program were published in third party publications since December 2008 (available upon request). Last week a reporter from the New York Times visited Maine to research for an article about Healthy Hometowns programs and other MWSC initiatives.
