January 2014 Kris Kolumn Volume: 75, Issue 8ulp We are still awaiting Mother Nature s gift of ample snow to Mammoth. With a little help from snow makers on the mountain, about 1/3 of the runs are open with approximately a 3 foot base. Please, someone do a snow dance! Have you seen the blog on our website lately? With David s and Ying s help, we are posting almost daily new items of interest to skiers and boarders. We want to attract more people - new and past members - to our website and club. One way of doing this is to use the technology that is at our fingertips. If you d like us to post something, send us an ! A big thanks to Bob Miller for once again hosting our ski club holiday party at his lovely home and to all those that attended and brought a delicious feast for us to share. I enjoyed catching up with everyone. Your board is still mulling over what direction to go in regarding our annual charitable gift. During the past several years, we had donated to a legacy mountain ski unit of the U.S. Army. But, we d like to bring our donation closer to home, something that benefits the average skier on a daily basis. We have narrowed our ideas, but again, if you have an idea please me. Although snow is moderate as we begin 2014, I believe that we ll get sufficient weather to make a trip to Mammoth more than worthwhile. I strongly suggest Members sign up for the Club Condo Weekend Trip, January 9-12, immediately followed by the ROKKA ski week, January (Sign-up info in this newsletter). If you participated in the December L.A. Council Ski Week or will be participating in the ROKKA ski week, you are assured that you will raise your skiing ability by at least one full level! On a personal note, my laptop has died and my cell phone was critically injured in the motorcycle accident. I have replaced it with an iphone. To maintain better contact with the Board and Members, I have found that I really do need a functioning smart phone. As you plot your strategy for watching your choice of bowl games, please also check our calendar (at the end of this newsletter) and blog for the latest and greatest in skiing and Ski Club events! There is just one spot left for the Park City, Canyons & Deer Valley Utah ski week trip, one month from now. So get your ski gear tuned-up. You ll need them the first week of February 1-8, Please let us know if you would like to join us on this trip. The LBSC ski club cut back on its number of spots on the trip to just 8, and with a recent cancellation. That makes 7, so if we can t fill this spot we ll have to let it go. Snowboarders, if you signed-up for the Park City ski week trip please contact me - Bob Shepard at I ll have your Lift Pass corrected, giving you one additional day at either The Canyon or Park City Mountain Resort. Deer Valley Mountain Resort does not have snowboard at their resort. We will be departing February 1, 2014 from LAX to Salt Lake, flying on Southwest Airlines with no baggage fees for your first two bags (both your boot & ski bags count as one bag). Check out all of the trip details in the Park City Flyer & Sign-up form now in the Ski Breeze. After the ski trip there will be a photo party later in May 2014 with location TBD. Take a lot of photos and videos. Please sign-up for that one spot on the trip and mail in your forms NOW. Thanks hope to see you in Park City!

Racing By Catherine Singer The Long Beach Ski Club has a long and prosperous history competing against the other regional ski clubs in both Slalom and Giant Slalom race events at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. I will be adding more links and information as the storms start rolling in. It is very mobile friendly so open it up on your smart phone. Feel free to contact me if you have any suggestions or comments. I have a giant banner ad for the Long Beach Ski Club so hopefully we can attract more interest in our club. 4

5 More on Racing from our Secretary By Craig Gibson On Sunday evening December 15th, 85 ski enthusiasts of many different skill levels convened at the Mammoth Mountain Inn to register for the 32ndannual Los Angeles Council Ski, Ride and Race Week. The following morning we separated into small classes of 4-7 students each and got down to business: 5 consecutive days, 5 hours a day of ski instruction with some of the best ski instructors and race coaches on the planet. I would love to go on and on about the drills, video analysis, gate training, races, etc. but I do so at the risk of subjecting you to my inner ski wonk; and, because of that, I will keep things simple. LA Council Ski Week is all about improving your skiing and having a heck of a good time doing so. LBSC members attending the camp were Art Husami, new member Hsin Chou, and myself. Other members up for the week but not attending the camp were Julie Elder, Ray Mortaloni, Steve Crowley, Larry Gowing, and new permanent Mammoth resident, Ken Kawahara. Former LBSC members Alan Gainok, who now lives in Florida, and Roger Bowman, who now lives in Georgia, also joined us for the week. Sorely missed was Mike Zullo who had to cancel participation in the camp due to a back injury. On Wednesday evening, December 18 the staff of Mammoth Mountain hosted a tribute to John Catozzi, the founder of the ski week, who passed away quite suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack on March 23, All camp participants were invited to join in a nighttime torchlight ski descent from McCoy Station to the Main Lodge. As a participant who was near the end of the procession, it was awesome to look down Broadway and see 140 points of light moving downhill in a serpentine formation. After the procession, we reconvened at the Dry Creek Bar for food, drink, live music and a video presentation on John s life. Following the video people stepped forward to reminisce. Although each reminiscence was unique and frequently humorous, each shared a common thread: John was a passionate person. He was passionate about his family; he was passionate about his friends; and he was passionate about skiing. His passion for skiing and his desire to share that with others was the genesis for the ski week which, 32 years later, continues to thrive and remains the highlight of the year for many. At the final camp banquet, we were all asked to raise our glasses for toasts. Three toasts were made. The first was to John Catozzi. The second was to John Funtsch, cofounder of the camp who is no longer able to attend. The third was to the continuing existence of the camp. Under the very capable hands of Chris Starczak and Leslie Bivens, our next camp is scheduled for December 15-19, Ullr 1, 12/14/13 (GS) Rev 2, 12/20/13 Club Results PLACE CLUB REGISTERED STARTERS POINTS 1 CENT AERO LONG SEA Totals 38 38

Get loose with lance By Lance Liebl Well, the year is coming to an end and we just had our last social event on December 7th celebrating our LBSC Christmas Party. The Christmas ham provided by the club was devoured along with all the food brought by members. I got to keep the ham bone and made delicious navy bean soup which I ate three times after sharing some of it at my work place. The turnout was the best we had in years. We probably had close to 30 members attended this party. We need to thank Bob Miller for hosting the party at his home and thank Jan Patten for decorating the home with her personal Christmas decorations. I can t think of a better way for all the members to celebrate the holidays together. I want to thank all the members for their attendance to all the social events the club provided this past year. Wine tasting was supported by most of the members. Two events that come to mind were the Saint Patrick Day party at Bob s home and the summer barbecue at Dave Lopez s which were tremendous successes. I want to thank every one of our members who supported the social events for I want to wish everyone an upcoming Happy New Year and hope all will be healthy and prosperous! For January we will have a wine tasting at the District Wine club located on Linden Ave. The date for this will be Saturday January 18th. Hope to see LBSC members attending this next social event. 8 Counting with Cherri By Cherri Gregg HAPPY NEW YEAR! Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014! The insurance for the Club was renewed in December, and we were reminded that the Club must maintain an adequate system to regularly secure the Waiver and Release Forms. By not doing so, it will not void the Club s insurance coverage, but it could void the Club s coverage in the event of a claim. What good is having insurance, if you can t file a claim if something DID happen? So, when you renew your membership, please make sure David gets your Application and signed Waiver Form. Remember, each member must fill out and sign their own application and waiver form. I heard that the holiday party was a lot of fun. I was sorry to miss it but Grandma duties trumps all. The expenses for the holiday Ken & Cherri Gregg party are still outstanding, and as Lance always puts on a great social event but spares no expense, I am hoping that I don t go into sticker shock when I finally do see the costs. The Club s financial goal for the last several years has been to break even, hoping that the membership dues and raffle funds would cover all operating expenses and the week and weekend trips would cover their own expenses. However, with the decrease in membership and the club no longer collecting money to attend the parties, it will not be possible for it to break even. The board has decided that, and that s okay. The board will continue to try and find ways to make money for the club, because without it, the club cannot survive. By the same token, spending from the reserve from years past for hosting social events is okay too. We have a total of 56 members 31 men and 25 women. That is still below the number of members this time last year. The new website gives people the capability to enroll on-line, and we have gotten some past members renewing their membership - which is great! However, some are signing up but not sending in the membership fee, application and waiver. So, if you are using the new system to enroll, please make sure you follow up by sending the membership fee with a signed application and waiver. The club s first ski trip is just around the corner, and the week trip to Utah is only a month away. Every year about October, I tell myself it s time to get back to going to the gym every day so that I ll be ready when ski season starts. Well, as usual, work has kept me very busy. I haven t been to the gym in weeks; okay lets not lie, months. That s not the start to ski season that I was hoping for. However, Ken & I are looking forward to a great ski season! We always enjoy the weekend trips to Mammoth and the Saturday night dinners at the Club condo. It is such a fun and relaxing way to spend a weekend. Well that s it for me. Hope you see you on the mountain or one of the Club s social events! 8

WAYS & MEANS By Ken Gregg Only six people showed up for the most recent General Membership meeting, held on December 4TH. There were 3 board members, 1 general member, 1 new member and 1 guest. There were an insufficient number of participants to hold a general raffle. We did however, conduct a free raffle to give away a nice bottle of wine to one of the new members &/or guest. As there were only 2 they each had a 50/50 chance of winning. And guess what, one of them walked away with nice bottle wine, just for showing up at the General Membership meeting; and free pizza too; lucky them! We would truly love to see some more participation at our next General Membership Meeting, which is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on 8 January. As usual, it will be held at Ecco s Pizza in Long Beach. Please plan on joining us for some free pizza (drinks are on your own), socializing and information about the club & upcoming events. As in the past we will be conducting a drawing to give away a bottle of wine to any of the non or recently new members in attendance. In addition, we are also planning on conducting a raffle for everyone s participation & enjoyment (assuming enough members show up). Hope that your fitness program this upcoming season is well underway and that you are starting to build up some additional strength & endurance. Let s plan on this being the best season ever!! LOOKING FOR LOCAL SKIERS! Marcos, a former ski school instructor is looking for people to ski with locally; Baldy, Snow Valley and Mountain High. His goal is to ski 100 times this year. He skied Slide Peak in Snow Valley 10 times by himself last year. Give him a ring at (562) Marcos & Elise 9
