1 July 2018 Volume 80, Issue 7 Kris Kolumn By Kris president@longbeachskiclub.org Welcome 80th Year of the Long Beach Ski Club!!! El Niño is on the Horizon! Let s BBQ & Party! While you all are enjoying the typical summer doings, Mike Zullo, our new VP of Weekend Trips is busy promoting fun, local activities, like kayaking and stand up board paddling through Naples and Alamitos Bay, and a bike-skate-skateboard-razor scooter-walk. Great ways way to get ready for the upcoming ski season and trips to Mammoth. Yours truly will be hosting the July BBQ with croquet, badminton, possibly horse shoes, and ping pong. At the same time, Mark Malan, VP of Week Trips, is considering going to Big Sky with other lucky skiers for a club in-country experience, as well as something special for an out-of-country trip. To bolster your thoughts of skiing during the upcoming season, you might like to know that weather prognosticators have identified the strongest El Niño conditions in the South Pacific that they ve seen for many years. Traditionally, this has led to more rain and snow in and along the coast. When combined with a northern cold front, Mammoth gets bigger dumps. The local mountains, too. 'Nuf said. So, keep your gear (and body) in good working shape. I am looking forward to being able to sail again, towards the end of summer, and ski in the new season, or whenever the doc says my rotator cuff is OK. 'Til then, I ll have to be a kindly skipper, plying crew with ample food and drink. David Lopez out bid others for Kris Kruise, for which a number of crew have already volunteered. I encourage everyone to pick up the phone this summer and call past ski club members to check on them and to cajole them into coming to one of our events, a BBQ, one of Mike s activities or a General Meeting at Ecco s Pizza. These events are fun and a great way for Craig Gibson, our Membership Chair, to increase our Membership. His goal this year is to surpass 100. Be safe this 4th and Cheers! Kris

5 LONGBEACH SKI CLUB JUNE 2018 Volume 80, Issue 6 Get Loose with Lance - Social By Lance Liebl social@longbeachskiclub.org On June 9th, we had a great time at the Wine Crush. Approximately 16 members attended and everyone brought appetizers to share. No June gloom. The weather was perfect. Lots of lively discussion and enjoyment of each other's company. Wine tasting has become one of our most popular events. We have great winos. On Saturday July 21st we will have our first barbecue of the year. Our president Kris Flaig will host the event. He has planned several activities: ping pong, badminton and possibly a lawn game. On Saturday August 19th, we will be at Dave Lopez's home for our last barbecue. Saturday September 8th, we will have wine tasting at District Wine. On Saturday October 9th, we have wine tasting at our most favorite place: Bistro Saint Germaine. Our annual Open House will be later that month, at the Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club. Watch for the date in next month s Ski Breeze. Remember all club events start at 5pm. Event fliers will be ed for with details. July 4th is coming and I hope everyone has plans for this event. I will be sailing with friends to watch the fire works on the water in front of the Long Beach Queen Mary. Want to wish everyone a happy 4th of July. Wine Crush

7 LONGBEACH SKI CLUB JULY 2018 Volume 80, Issue 7 Mike s Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report and Summer Activities By Mike Zullo weekendtrips@longbeachskiclub.org LBSC had four stand up boarders (SUP) and 2 kayakers on a calm, warm, overcast Sunday morning. Hardly anyone was on the water. Dana, Catherine, Keith and I on SUP and Julie and Yvette on kayaks. For those of you that have purchased a $600 IKON pass you can recover your investment in 4 days, only 2 LBSC trips. You can then ski for free the rest of the season. And the pass may also be good for lift tickets at our week trip destinations. Let s stay strong during the summer to prepare for (hopefully) a deep snow season. Ski-Ride-Race Camp should be the second week of December. Keith Catherine and Yvette

9 LONGBEACH SKI CLUB July 2018 Volume 80, Issue 7 MARK & MARIETTA MALAN Week Trips with Mark Malan The season is just ending and I'm asking you to think about next year. Our club is considering Big Sky, Montana in early February 2019.The trip will have a low cost to those that have the Mammoth IKON pass. The international trip looks like it will be Cervinia, Italy! Club Med is making us a great deal. More to follow. The FWSA conference was fun this year. There was an exciting white water raft trip, hiking at Lake Tahoe, golfing, and a lot of great ski club ideas for non-ski travel. You are invited to next year's convention that will be in the Palm Desert area. It appears that many ski clubs are morphing into travel clubs. Bike/Barge tours are very popular. But, if I was to travel in August I'd go to Chile because that is where the vertical feet are. Keep your tips up, Mark weektrips@longbeachskiclub.org Big Sky Cervinia, Italy
