February 2014 Kris Kolumn If you ve been to Canada lately, you likely got dumped on. Volume: 75, Issue 9ulp If you did Mammoth in January, you had good skiing on some runs, and maybe a good Club Dinner on Saturday! If you re in Park City with Our Ski Club, you have lots of powder unless you do the groomed runs, then maybe not so much powder. If you do Mammoth in February, I predict great skiing, and an even better Club Dinner on Saturday at the Club Condo! (All Members and their dates are invited just give Roberto a heads-up!) Your Ski Club is fielding ideas for next year s week trip. How does Telluride grab ya?? How about Europe the following year?? Talk to Shep! As Shep leads us around the country or to other countries, we need a few good people to take positions on Your Board. A few people have served for 3 or more years, and it s time to give them a well-deserved break. We continue to gain New Members, filling the ranks of Your Club. Whether New Or Old Member, consider serving Your Ski Club as Treasurer or Sargent-at-Arms, or on the Social Committee. Talk to Craig (Your Club Secretary)! Recovery from my November collision continues. It s a long process. It s good to know that, when not on the slopes, many Club Members are keeping in shape by cycling, going to the gym, yoga, swimming, dancing, and other activities. Keep it up! Go Broncos! Ron, Ken and Craig at the January Mammoth Weekend Trip Dinner

Weekend Trips with Roberto By Roberto Tovar Greetings members: The schedule has been set for the coming ski season: Jan 9-12, 2014 Feb 20-23, 2014 Mar 20-23, 2014 Apr 3-6, 2014 This years cost is $ 200, for the three day weekend. This cost covers comfortable condo lodging with a fully equipped kitchen, bedding and towels. A jacuzzi is on-site. A communal dinner is provided Saturday night for all members staying in the club condo. This consists of pasta and meat sauce, salad, garlic bread some wine and dessert. Any club member who is up at Mammoth on the club trip weekends, is invited to partake of this evening meal. Please call or me, to let me know how many people will attend. This meal is free to those on the official club trip, but a nominal fee of $ 5.00 will be charge all others attending.this meal. If you need help in arranging carpools and procuring lift tickets, that can be provided. You must provide your own ski equipment, lift tickets and a Friday night meal. Please remember, you must be an official member of the Long Beach Ski Club to join the ski club trips and fill out the sign-up form located in the back part of Breeze. Please support the club and see you up on the slopes! Week Trip With Shep The LBSC Ski Club will be joining three other LA Council Ski clubs on this week trip: Century City, Space Park, and Edelweiss ski clubs. They will depart February 1st for a week of great skiing in Park City, flying from LAX to Salt Lake on Southwest. This includes the resorts of Park City, The Canyon, and Deer Valley. We will be enjoying a fun day of club races and barbeque on the Park City slopes. Later in the week, the club has total evening access to the Park City Alpine Roller Coaster & Zip Line activities. Friday, the last night, everyone on the trip will be at the Grub Steak House Restaurant for the final evening of dining & dancing before departing back to LAX on Saturday. After the ski trip there will be a photo party later in May so take lots of photos and videos. The location will be announced later. Start planning ahead because the Long Beach Ski Club and the LA Ski Council clubs are working on the 2015 week ski trip quite possibly to Telluride Colorado. This will be a great trip to one of the best Cowboy Ski towns in the USA, with wonderful skiing opportunities and very good restaurants to be enjoyed during the ski week. You can even set up a day of horseback riding! We will be seeing you in Park City 3

Racing By Steve Brown As everyone knows, we have not had much snow this year. The snow pack only has 12% of the normal water content. With only a 15 inch base at the main lodge, it s tough to keep the races courses in good shape. However, the racing staff has done a good job and those runs have some of the best snow on the mountain. On the morning of the January slalom race, there were high winds and chair one was closed. So instead of using the best chair to access the race course, we had to take chair 6 and then chair 2 to get to there. Because of the extra time it took to get to the course, many racers missed their start time and had to go at the end of the pack. Even with the wind, the course is in a semi-protected area and the race went off without a hitch. We even got a light dusting of snow later that afternoon. As a team, Long Beach team finished in third place. Here are the results for our individual racers and the overall results: Class Name Place SKILL 6 VET F Terrie Seaton 3 SKILL 3 VET M Gary Seaton 1 SKILL 4 VET M Steve Brown 2 SKILL 7 VET M Roberto Tovar DNF SKILL 8 VET M Craig Gibson 1 Special congratulations to Craig. In the slalom race at the end of the ROKKA race camp, he received two strikes for being too fast for level 9 and was bumped up one level. Then he took first place in his new level at the January race and received another strike. Well done! One of our racers is out with a dislocated shoulder. Let s all wish Ken Kawahara a speedy recovery. He is planning to be back for the race in March. Come on out for the February race. If you want to get in some extra practice, they are planning a two hour clinic the day before the race. Meet in Roma s café (in the main lodge near the cafeteria) on Friday 2/21/14 at noon to sign up. Here is the schedule for the rest of the year: 2/22 ULLR 3, Giant Slalom 3/22 & 3/23 SoCal Championship, SL and GS 4/5 & 4/6 Far West Championship, SL and GS See you on the race course! 5

Membership Pattison s Parley By Dave Pattison Thank you everyone for getting people to join! We passed our membership goal with 62members! If you haven t seen the newly released member roster sent out to your recently, check it out! Use it to contact other members to set up rides to the hill once it starts snowing again! Speaking of which... Lets pray for some snow to fall! California needs the water and we skiers need the powder! Snow is finally on the forecast so let s hope the weather man knows what he s talking about. If it doesn t pick up at mammoth, get excited for the Park City week trip, because I ll let you in on alittle secretutah does have snow! Happy turns LOOKING FOR LOCAL SKIERS! Marcos, a former ski school instructor is looking for people to ski with locally; Baldy, Snow Valley and Mountain High. His goal is to ski 100 times this year. He skied Slide Peak in Snow Valley 10 times by himself last year. Give him a ring at (562) Marcos & Elise February birthdays Mark Malan 1 Fay Mumbauer 2 Al Woble 10 Catherine Singer 28 6

More on Racing from our Secretary By Craig Gibson Upon arriving at ROKKA registration I could only think Geez these guys are OLD! Unlike LA Council, which numbered 85 participants, ROKKA had only 18. Eric Tanner, the director of Mammoth Ski School, introduced our 3 instructors for the week: all PSIA level 3 coaches - two from the race department and one from the ski school. He admitted the difficulty of putting together three classes for such a diverse group, but promised that he would make it work. When Eric promises he delivers. Upon his recommendation I joined the intermediate group and met my classmates and instructor for the week. On the first lift ride, my classmates asked me if I was a legend. Of course I had to ask, What is a legend? They laughed and mentioned that I would find out soon enough. As the week wore on I learned that the word Legend is a term coined by the ROKKA league as a racer classification for any one over the age of 75. Everyone in my class, with the exception of me, was a legend. I loved skiing with these elderly fellows. They always put a smile on my face and I learned some lessons from them for future reference: 1. Make sure you take your hearing aid off before putting on your helmet. If you don t you will get a splitting headache when the wind blows. 2. When the coach demonstrates warm-up stretches and admonishes you for not participating, tell him that you are. 3. Always remind the instructor to deliver instruction at the top of the lift because instruction delivered at the bottom will be forgotten on the ride up. In thirteen years, if all goes well, I will be a Legend. I only hope that, if and when I arrive at that point, I will have the health, enthusiasm and sense of humor that these guys demonstrated at ROKKA Ski Week. Old guys rule. 8 Terry Smith Nomination Ken Kawahara Nominated by: Bob Ellis Ken Kawahara stepped up and has been a leader in ULLR League and Far West Racing Association for almost a decade as the Race Chairman for ULLR League. Ken s quiet devotion and participation as ULLR League Chairman has not gone unnoticed. Many times Ken has shown leadership and vision with his actions and has stepped up to produce results to help the organizations. Ken has been involved with scheduling races, organizing his team for the Championships and other race events. His team did so well last year, ULLR won the Roma McCoy Trophy for most points per racer at Mammoth Mountain in April Ken first started skiing at Mammoth in Growing up in Seattle, Ken never tried it in Washington. Ken took a leave of absence from his job at TRW to be a ski bum at Mammoth in , one of the worst snow years ever, and worked at Footloose. Ken first joined the TRW ski club in 1985, then the Long Beach Ski Club in Ken started ski racing with Long Beach in 1994, where he was part of a group of LBSC racers known as the F Troop. In 1998 he served as the LBSC Elske rep, then joined the Beach Cities Ski Club in 1997, and was briefly a member of the South Bay Ski Club and the Singles Ski Club. In 2004, Ken made the mistake of volunteering to be the ULLR League Race Chairman, where he has been stuck ever since. Ken has attended every Championship Race and Summer Rules Meeting since becoming the ULLR Race Chairman, and has made his presence known with his contributions and ideas. Ken has also been very instrumental in acquiring silent auction donations from several parties and being a positive force at all of our meetings. In 2012 Ken retired from TRW after 37 years in the defense industry and has been living in Mammoth during the winter and Washington state during the summer. In addition to Mammoth Mountain, Ken has also skied at June Mountain, Mt. High, Mt. Baldy, Bear Mountain, Kirkwood, Heavenly, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Snoqualmie Summit, Mt. Baker, Stevens Pass, Crystal Mountain, Jackson Hole, Alta, Snowbird, Park City, Canyons, Deer Valley, Solitude, Sundance, Taos, Telluride, Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Beaver Creek. Prior to skiing, Ken was an amateur auto racer, racing in Showroom Stock and Formula Vees in the Sports Car Club of America auto races in Washington, Oregon and California in the 1970s. He also moonlighted as an engineer/mechanic for various professional auto racing efforts through the 1990s. In Ken s spare time, he enjoys cycling, windsurfing and building and flying radio control airplanes. Ken also makes some great home crafted beer. Ken Kawahara is very deserving of this award as he continues to strive to increase the number of racers, improve the organization with new ideas and to lead his racers at racing events throughout Far West. 9 Get loose with lance By Lance Liebl On January 18th we had a wine tasting event at District Wine. Attending were Homer Barar, Mike Zullo, Yvonne Place, Gary Norman, Bob Miller, Jan Patten and Heidi Klimp. It was great to see Heidi who was my vice-president of weekends when I was President of LBSC. Heidi was responsible for arranging the first LBSC ski trip to Europe. We had over 24 members travel to Zermatt, Switzerland for our annual ski trip. This was the first time for many of the members to travel to Europe for skiing. The wine and appetizers were great. For Saturday February 15th I have arranged a wine tasting at the Willmore Wine Bar located at 3848 Atlantic Ave (just south of Atlantic just south of Carson), in Long Beach. I have reserved for the LBSC the back room which will seat about 15 to 20 people. This wine bar was recommended by Jan Patten and Bob Miller. A flyer will be sent out with the Ski Breeze with details. Kris Flaig; our president and I will be looking at several venues for our upcoming annual dinner dance in early May. We are considering having our event at a local yacht club. Possibly the Shoreline Yacht Club located on the water downtown Long Beach. We are considering the dress to be business casual. If any of you desire to be on the board, please contact Craig Gibson or Kris Flaig. District Wine Social 9

Counting with Cherri By Cherri Gregg Where s the snow? Well by watching the weather reports, it looks like the mid-west is getting it all and there s just none left for us. Let s wish for that to change soon. The Club had three new members sign up at the January general meeting. Welcome to the Club! With the new members, that brings the Club s membership to 60. It s still not where we were at this time last year, but better than we were last month. The expense for the Holiday party was $65. Good job Lance! The Club s week trip to Utah should be in progress by the time you read this article and the January ski trip to Mammoth was a mild success, thanks to the weather. In Ken & Cherri Gregg all of the years we ve been going to Mammoth, I have never seen such a sparse snow covering okay, maybe in August. There were a lot of closed runs still showing rocks & sapling tree tops. We skied what was open and the worst day skiing is still better than being at work! Roberto, Art, Ron, Barbara and Barbara (both Barbaras are new members) stayed at the Snowflower condo. Bob, Jan, Lance, and Ken showed up for dinner and some camaraderie. Craig even stopped by to say hello. We always enjoy the weekend trips to Mammoth and the Saturday night dinners at the Club condo. It is such a fun and relaxing way to spend a weekend. Well that s it for me. Hope you see you on the mountain or one of the Club s social events! WAYS & MEANS By Ken Gregg We had a little bit better showing at our most recent General Membership meeting, which was held on 8 January. Approximately 11 people showed up with 3 new members, 5 board members and 4 general members. It was felt that there were an insufficient number of participants to hold a general raffle. We did however, conduct a free raffle and gave away a very nice bottle of wine to one of the 3 new members. And the winner was Russ Walters. Congratulations Russ!!! Although I must admit that Russ has a bit of an advantage as one of the other new members was his wife Diana, thus giving them a 66.7% chance of winning. Condolences go out to Larry Lee, the other new member who was in attendance. As I will be on the club s week ski trip to Park City, UT, during our next General Membership meeting, Mr. Lance Liebl has graciously agreed to step up and conduct the raffles. Once again we will be conducting a raffle to give away a very nice bottle of wine to one of the non-members or recent new members in attendance. This is a free raffle. Any non-member or recent new member in attendance at the meeting will be provide a free raffle ticket for the raffling off of a bottle of wine. In addition, we are also planning on conducting raffle for everyone s participation & enjoyment (assuming enough members show up), however for this raffle, the raffle tickets will need to be purchased. Even though Mammoth could certainly use some more snow, there is still enough to have some fun. Although I recommend that you may want to seriously consider renting skis until the conditions improve. Please keep working on your fitness program as even if you don t get in much skiing it will still be useful for your general health. Go & Do!!! 10
