March 2018 Volume 80, Issue 3 Kris Kolumn 3-4 Feet of Snow Predicted at Mammoth Big Bear Gets a Dump and local freeze warnings Jet Stream Goes South for February What do these events have in common? Potential for great skiing at Mammoth and locally for the rest of the season! Ski club Members have already realized this and started to RSVP for the February 8-11 Club Condo. Maybe, a few of our men and women will want to race and give Century City a run for its money? Mark tells us of really fantastic doings at Steamboat Springs, while Whitefish had a blizzard that prevented skiing for 2 days, and most resorts in Colorado and Utah have resumed receiving snow showers. I hope that you all are getting your fair share of skiing and/or boarding in this season. Yours truly is working on things closer to home, but may break thru yet for a little slipping and sliding down those wonderful slopes. And, if you can t ski, maybe you can sip a little wine? Your Board is starting to plan summer BBQs, the May Dinner/Dance, and elections. October will mark our 80 th Anniversary! Maybe, you can be a part of this? Please talk it up with your friends, Lance, and your favorite Board Members. Please see the calendars for your latest and greatest events... Cheers! Kris president@longbeachskiclub.org

LONGBEACH SKI CLUB March 2018 Volume 80, Issue 3 Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar weekendtrips@longbeachskiclub.org The drive to Mammoth, on Thursday was pleasant with Zero traffic problems. Friday dawned a perfect Mammoth blue-bird day. Sunny and with hardly a breath of wind, one of those days you tell your friends, "You should have been there!" Saturday, massive holiday crowds descended, with a rising wind. Later that night, while watching Olympic coverage, we could hear the winds howling. My rider suggested we not ski on Sunday, which turned out to be the ticket. I later received a text that other friends were limited to Chairs 4, 10 and 11! The next Mammoth weekend is scheduled for March 8th through the 11th. Hope to see you there. March 8-11, 2018 April 5-8, 2018 Enjoy! Roberto roberto.tovar@alumni.usc.edu

LONGBEACH SKI CLUB March 2018 Volume 80, Issue 3 Week Trips with Mark Malan Mark & Billy Kidd - Gold and Bronze Medal Olympic Winner! February s trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado was fantastic! Starting off on a relaxed mid-day departure meant we didn t need to get to the airport until after 10am. The non-stop flight arrived on time and we checked in at our condos just before dusk. We had plenty of time to buy condo supplies and more. I skied 6 days in a row with each day being more fun than the last. We had a Super Bowl party in the big condo on Sunday after skiing. Although we walked several times to the mountain, when dressed in gear with equipment it was easier to take the shuttle that came around every ten minutes. The entire town of Steamboat appears to run on an unlimited set of shuttles. The mountain has several lunch places that turn into dinner houses that are reached by large sleds after the lifts close. Rendezvous Café was popular however; the Four Points Lodge had the best pot pie I ve ever eaten. Although in Colorado, the pie was turkey, lest you get the wrong idea. It snowed lightly on three days which promoted AWESOME tree skiing. Groomers were fun and we had a club NASTAR race day. The fasted guy was Dana Hart by 37 hundredths of a second and the fasted woman was our newest member Wendy Walker. (Got to get her to the Mammoth races.) Friday night we celebrated the Olympic Opening Ceremony in the big condo with good food, drink, and company. A great time was had by all. As my legs couldn t do the 7th day in a row, I was happy to fly out Saturday after lunch, which also gave us ample time to do shopping for the folks back home. Next month read about the results of the upcoming trip to ski FRANCE!! Can hardly wait to ski the Alps. Keep your tips up, Mark weektrips@longbeachskiclub.org

FEBRUARY STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO WEEK LONG TRIP! The locals were frustrated with the snow but we had a fun time tearing up the slopes! Some took a couple of mountain tours, Jodie went horseback riding, others took a shopping days and explored downtown, and Catherine & Jodie checked out Fish Creek Falls; the inspiration for the Coors Brewery waterfall. Brian s fabulous sister and niece took a couple of days off and showed us the best ski runs. Mostly, we skied, skied, skied!

Barbara Nelson arranged a delicious dinner, in the beginning of the week for the group at one of Steamboat Spring s premier spots - Cafe Diva. On Thursday we went downtown to listen to Brian s brother-in-law s band. They ROCKED! As did the beer and pizza! Friday, the big condo hosted a potluck and we watched the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Ray and Sandy were great adventurers, going on a snowmobile dinner one evening and a sleighride dinner another. Thank you Mark for a great trip and a leisurely morning before our afternoon flight home!
