1 April 2018 Volume 80, Issue 4 Kris Kolumn Long Beach Ski Club Turns 80! Snow continues to Fall Mammoth Mountain is a Winter Wonderland Spring Skiing will eventually come Most of Mark s reports from Mammoth, Steamboat Springs, and France say that skiing is good this season. Made better by recent snows. Unfortunately, Brian Maloney, who broke his arm, will not enjoy the rest of the season as he had originally envisioned it. Eric Hartman still plans to race even with his bruised ribs. We shall miss Brian s prowess helped make the Long Beach Ski Club Racing Team a power to be reckoned with. Closer to home, Lance is keeping us sipping wines and Roberto and others are collaborating on making the Club Condo a great party house. Craig is counting more members each month. We thank Brian Maloney, stepping down as VP of Racing, as he now dedicates more time to running his business. Spring is technically here, bringing Easter, flowers, elections, the May 19 Dinner-Dance, and Spring skiing. My limited control is to appoint a Nominations Committee: Lance Liebl and Craig Gibson. Each year, a few people step forward as a few people step down. Please forward your name or nominate another responsible individual (skier, boarder, or not) to Lance or Craig. We ll hold nominations at the April 4 General Meeting at Ecco s. The Board will approve nominations at the April 11 Board Meeting and mail out ballots at a packaging party. Ballots must be received during the first few days of May, so that we can approve election results at the May 9 Board Meeting. We ll present the new officers, chairs, and members-atlarge of the board at the dinner-dance; and thank the old members. Please consider lending a hand with this process just let Lance or Craig know you d like to help. If you have any photos you d like to share for the Dinner Dance, contact Craig Gibson membership@longbeachskiclub.org with Pictures for Dinner Dance in the Subject line. Lastly, I'll gladly buy a drink for any member who brings a guest or new member to the 80th birthday dinner. Cheers, Kris president@longbeachskiclub.org

9 RACERS EDGE Brian Maloney Check out this video taken in Tamarak and Steamboat. Hello racers, The Far West Racing Association club championships are coming to Mammoth April 6-8. Unlike our usual club races, you should sign up in advance if you can. Please contact your League Chairperson ASAP if you want to race, and they will get you the details on how to register in advance. The race fees for the weekend are $65 until March 29th and then the fee goes up to $75 until April 3rd. People who register April 4 until the day of the race will pay $85. The organizers need people to sign up early to know how many to expect and set up the groups for the courses. You do not need to mail your check in advance, but the late fees will be based on when you get your name in. We will be using the Sierra Room in the Mammoth Mtn. Inn for registration and awards (not in Main Lodge). We will have Pacesetter Trials this year and it will be held on Friday beginning at 10 AM. The cost is $25/pacesetter. Please be sure to tell your League Chairperson if you want to be a pacesetter. If you want to clinic on Friday, contact Debi Phelps at OpenLeagueRacing@gmail.com. There will be two clinics; slalom in the morning and GS in the afternoon. Limit is 30 per clinic. SL Clinic noon GS clinic 1--3 pm Price is $35/clinic WINNERS ERIC HARTMAN & ROBERTO TOVAR!
10 Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar and Catherine Singer Our March Mammoth weekend: good snow, great company, and a fabulous Saturday club condo dinner! Jean and Gino made a delicious, homemade lasagna dinner (from a secret family recipe) and garlic bread. Much more than our 23 skiers could eat. Craig created an equally delicious Cesar salad with house-made dressing. Nia s warm, homemade brownies and whipped cream, with Catherine s Dreyer s ice cream, completed the meal. All of these followed an assortment of appetizers and collection of artisanal wines and beers. If you d like to be a part of our next Saturday Mammoth club condo dinner, April 7, contact Catherine Singer at (949) by April 4 th, so Chef Craig can purchase makings for another delicious, homemade meal. We request those not staying at the club condo bring $10 each to cover costs. BYOB. Also, those of us driving up enjoyed a Pork Chop Thursday dinner at Mount Whitney Restaurant, 227 S Main St, Lone Pine, CA Let Catherine know if you re interested in joining us Thursday April 5, 4:30pm. Looking forward to seeing you at our last season trip April 5-8.!

13 Week Trips with Mark Malan À ski France Est Divine We just returned from the two-week ski trip to France WOW!! Where to start? First and foremost, the conjoined ski areas are about times the size of Mammoth. The record snow we had last year in California went to Europe this year. We skied for days and never had wind or visibility issues. (Sometimes it is just good to be lucky!) One day we took a zip line from the top of the Alps at one resort to the top of another nearby ski resort. They put the skis/poles or snowboard on the back of your harnesses so when you arrive over there you can continue skiing for the day. The drop was over 4,000 feet, if the harness ever broke CRAZY!! As we joined a Far West group, the LBSC members were part of 120 people. We all made many new friends. About 50 people extended their tour for a second week. We went to Lyon, Beaune, and Paris. Each city has its own flavor and events. We were busy every day. Activities included wine tasting, visiting a mustard factory in Dijon, tours, etc. During free time, we walked, rode the tube (you can get to anywhere from anywhere with their metro system) and visited cathedrals, bastilles, museums, and walked a whole lot more. There were so many highlights it s hard to encapsulate them in a short article. The Vivaldi concert in an old church was outstanding as was visiting Notre Dame during the celebration of the Crown of Thorns. The fresh snow in downtown Paris with flakes the size of silver dollars, having a gourmet lunch in a cellar with friends (and super-fine meals each night), the zip line, skiing from one town to the next, one resort to the next, and so much more were amazing. The best part was hanging with friends old and new. So, HEAR THIS... please come to next month s meeting so you can make suggestions about where the club should travel to for its domestic and international ski weeks next year. I listen well with pizza in my hands. Keep your tips up, Mark weektrips@longbeachskiclub.org
