SKI BREEZE JANUARY 2016 Volume 77, Issue 7 Good will to all! How/Why am I ready? - How to properly finally sunk in! - Many people are anticipated to be at Mammoth. Maybe you can help us race is it worth a free drink?! - I followed Ken s recommendations for keeping both my skis and me in shape!!! - My New Year s Resolutions include making sure our website is fully electronic this year!!!! Kris Kolumn Welcome to 2016!! After a white Christmas in Colorado, I am ready for sailing to Catalina, Malibu, or wherever, followed by skiing/boarding at Mammoth with the Club. Aren t you? Finally, after observing another skier nonchalantly sashay down a somewhat challenging run with his feet closely together, it finally sunk in!! So, I tried it! And, liked it! No longer do I max out my (oh so muscular) legs, but efficiently and effectively control my speed and balance. Geeze, I coulda, shoulda, woulda taken a week or two of lessons to learn this! Pictured above, NASTAR bronze medal winners. Front row L to R Art (holding his medal), Brian, Craig (all LBSC) and Frank (Slope Surfers).

I heard that a few of our new members will join us in Mammoth, maybe at the Saturday evening Club Dinner, still just $5 for those not staying at the Club Condo. We get more new members thru Meetup all the time and former members just plain miss us! This also defrays our insurance cost, which is up from $13 to $17 each, but can also cover for parties year-'round and Club Condos on ski trips. Let's see how many Club Condos we can fill! Craig is looking for a few more skiers to race - men and women in whatever skill level, as the Club with the most skiers typically wins... although we make it close by placing high in each level where we compete! Luckily, my Dad likes to go to the gym. So, every visit to Colorado includes trips to the gym. It is interesting to note that muscles require a few hundred calories every day just sitting there! This year life may become easier. By verifying electronic signatures and allowing everyone to sign-up on-line, we make it easier for new, tech-savvy members to join and everyone to sign-up for trips. to Mammoth, Aspen, or wherever! Monarch and Telluride had more than 100 inches a few days before Christmas. If El Nino lives up to its hype and we all start living right, Aspen will be blessed with a few more inches.just hoping! So, I got to enjoy a white Christmas in Colorado. Big Deal! It dumped 2 feet on Christmas Day in the mountains, while I was celebrating with family down on the flatlands! Next time, I'll be sure to change wiper fluid at the state boarder, as my wonderful California stuff froze (!!) and I was forced to drive slowly and repeatedly pull over to clean off my windshield. Below are some pictures from the December LA Council Ski and Race Week in Mammoth. Long Beach Ski Club members and even former members attended in great numbers! In fact, more than 80 skiers were scheduled to participate!

L to R is Brian, Craig, Steve and Roger Bowman (former LBSC now living in Georgia) jackets on ready to go out into the cold after the banquet. Brian, Craig and Roger earned Bronze. Steve earned a Gold. NASTAR gold medal winners. L to R is Larry Gowing, (blue & red striped shirt) took 2nd (former LBSC now Aerospace) Mystery man in black, Steve Brown (blue shirt) 3rd place (LBSC), Mystery man in green shirt. Fastest man on the hill, Don Shafe was honored separately at the end. With best wishes for a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Kris

Sarah Sez By Sarah Pool Long Beach Ski Club Posse While The Posse is not an official branch of the Long Beach Ski Club, these lovely ladies met over 20 years ago through LB Ski Club activities. They skied, played tennis, attended concerts, dances, and parties together. One of their long-time members dubbed them The Posse and the name stuck. Several of the women have met their significant other/husband through the LB Ski Club and some are still hopeful! Meet The Posse. Pictured left to right are: Laura Smilkstein, Yvonne Place, Julie DeLuccio, Theresa Gallardo, Susan Papp, Therese Wright, Sarah Pool, Terri Green, Jan Patten, Kathy Adler, and Libby Haynes plus a few not pictured: Heidi Klimp, Barbara Nelson, Christine Kiffmann, Judy Fairbanks, and Taylor Roberts. Gathering on a regular basis, these friends know how to have a GOOD TIME. They know how to DRINK adult beverages and EAT gourmet food. A couple of the original Posse members have moved away, but the majority of the members still get together to celebrate. Outside of official LB Ski Club activities, the Posse has gathered to support and celebrate each other s special days: showers, weddings, and retirements, but mainly birthdays.

While skiing is in the past for many of them, a few are still hanging in there and enjoy going on the Club trips. This group is an example of how the Long Beach Ski Club impacts lives and connects GOOD, FUN-LOVING people who make life-long friendships! Happy New Year! All the best in 2016! Cheers! Sarah

Craig s Crag By Craig Gibson For those of you that vaguely recall your skis being out somewhere in the garage, now might the time to consider a little frolic in the snow. This coming weekend, January 7-10, LBSC members will be going to Mammoth & we plan to have more fun than you can shake a stick at. If you haven t reserved a spot on this trip yet, give Roberto a holler. If you have accommodations elsewhere, think about joining us for the club dinner. As Art Husami always says We don t have to sleep together to have fun together. Speaking of fun.did you know that on this same weekend our friends at Mammoth will be putting these cute little red and blue poles in the snow for us to ski around? They built this adorable little thing called a starting gate. You go to the gate and this nice little man yells out Racer Ready Go! You push off out of the gate and go around a blue pole followed by red followed by blue etc. until you are at the bottom. It s kind of like playing pinball except you are the ball. Of course this whole thing is timed, people vie against each other for who is the fastest, and various ski clubs have made this into a team sport. Since all racers are put into ability classes, the club that wins is not necessarily the club with the fastest racers but the club with the most participants. Because of this, Team Long Beach is making a plea for you, experts as well as beginners, to join us. On Saturday January 9, we will have two GS races- one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Join us at Roma s on that day between 8:00am - 10:00am to register. Whether you race or not, I m looking forward to seeing you on the slopes. See you there! Craig

On Old Mammoth Road Campo's A nice take on modern Italian cooking. In the Mammoth Village Berger's Simple, good comfort food. On Minaret Road, across from the Village Toomey's An interesting take on comfort food, bison meatloaf, anyone? On Minaret Road, down from the Village. Down 395, in the village of Tom's Place The hands down best restaurant in Mammoth, according to an overheard conversation on the town shuttle, was opened by the former chef of Tamarack Lodge. It is located on the second floor, above the bowling alley. Try it and give me a report! 18 Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl Our annual Christmas party was a tremendous success! In fact, the Xmas party at Bob Miller's home was the most successful Xmas party the club has had in years. Cynthia Carter our ski breeze editor told me she counted 40+ attendees. The catered food provided by Cesar s Bistro was fantastic. The club members ate everything that was provided and we almost ran out of food! We enjoyed visiting and feasting on quite a variety of wines and desserts.

We all enjoyed visiting and catching up and as there were new members, name tags helped greatly! And of course as we all know, Bob s house was a perfect setting for this event! And here of course are some of our favorite folks, all enjoying a great time together!

Thank goodness our President provided extra baked goods for this event. Kris makes the best fruit cake I have ever tasted. We even celebrated with a special LBSC Xmas Cake! The evening ended happily with lots of laughter and good spirits. We even had to move some folks outside despite the cold weather! I don t know how we ll top this next year, but we ll sure give it our best try!

We ve got some handsome skiier s out there just waiting to hit the slopes for pleasure as well as competitive racing! I hope everyone has had a very merry Christmas as we all did. and wishing you all a Happy New Year!

For January we will not have a club outing. Definitely, we will have a wine tasting in February. And I am researching a new venue for the upcoming wine tasting.

Until Next Year! Lance
