Weekend Trips, Week Trips, Wine Tasting, Parties and More! We need a few good skiers or boarders or has-beens to keep the Board going! EPIC barely begins to describe the Mammoth Snowfall this season. Mammoth Mountain and the Town of Mammoth Lakes are re-learning how to handle it all. Weekend Trips to Mammoth are more ski fun than you can shake your poles at! To keep this machine rolling, we need a few new Board Members! Without Ski Club Board Members, you would have lots of time on your hands: - no monthly wine tasting - no catered Christmas Party with real fruit cake - no entertainment at the Open House in the Fall or the May Dinner-Dance - no weekend trips to Mammoth - no week-long ski trips in Canada or Europe - no summer trips to Europe

2 Please inquire how you can volunteer over free pizza at Ecco s on March 1 st. No skiing required! You can learn from the best mentors in the business. And if this Club isn t big enough for you, you can volunteer for the L.A. Council of Ski Clubs! Although we have the greatest snow in the country in our backyard, we still like to experience the snow and cultures far away, like Canada and Italy. Our recent weeklong trip to Big White, allowed us to experience a distinctly different kind of mountain topography, resort entertainment, and emergency medical procedures. Letty ran the show Feb 16th-19th and had 3 new members join her in one of the Club Condo's. Tons of snow up there, so much that part of it was curded up in certain areas and a little difficult to plow through. It snowed all day long on Friday, so Saturday was a much better ski day. Letty even made a spaghetti dinner Saturday evening. All in all, they all had a great time! The last Weekend Mammoth Trip coincided with the Week-Long Ski Trip to Big White. Hence, some regulars, like me, were far up North! The next two Mammoth Weekend Trips are March 9-12 and March 30-Apr 2. Roberto is awaiting your checks and forms for the March 9th-12th Trip. Big White While Mammoth has gracious slopes, Big White has repeating steep undulations on most runs. It certainly teaches you to have your wits about you every moment that you re on the mountain. It also teaches you to handle these with ease, and to learn to enjoy them, as everyone did even if they exhausted some of us. And when you re not actually on the mountain, you can find interesting cuisine at the bottom of most runs, next to lifts that will take you back up as soon as you re ready to go. You can also go dog sledding, like Jodi enjoyed, or ice skating, at which I was rather rusty. After the lifts are closed, there s sometimes night skiing and always a celebratory atmosphere at the downhill end of the gondola. There you can find an assortment of diversions, including ice skating or resort team hockey games, tubing on long exciting runs, and free hot cocoa.

3 Although this wonderful play land has much to offer, it could be improved slightly with a closer medical facility for all the skier and boarder injuries. Our 4 ski clubs alone amounted to at least 3 reportable injuries. Quincy (CCSC) suffered a cracked rib; Lou (LBSC) will find out soon whether running into a tree amounted to 3 or 4 bruised or broken ribs; and Lance had to take me to a Kelowna ER for X-rays and treatment for my broken collarbone. Quincy and Lou suffered their ailments early and mid-week, respectively, and took a little time off, while my left shoulder impacted the hard trail ice through a few inches of powder, on what was to be the next to last run for Jodi and me. All 3 of us hope to be at Mammoth for the last weekend of March. Of course, my doctor might have something to say about this. ;) Next Month, Shep and others will likely have a wonderful report on their trip to Italy. Wherever you go, whatever you do, be safe and bring back great memories to share! Cheers! Get Loose with Lance By Lance February social events were mostly related to ski trips outside United States. Big White trip to Canada in early February and a ski trip to Italy.

The lodging at the condos were 5 star with ski in/ski out very convenient to the lifts. Although, the weather was not perfect, the mountain was great!

8 Get Loose with Lance By Lance February social events were mostly related to ski trips outside United States. Big White trip to Canada in early February and a ski trip to Italy. Since I attended the Big White trip, this article is about what happened there. The security at the airports made the trip going and returning to be a pain in the ass. Airlines chosen were great. The lodging at the condos were 5 star with ski in/ski out very convenient to the lifts. Although, the weather was not perfect, the mountain was great! Big White was really fun to ski with groomed trails and the snow was awesome! One of the highlights of the week was tubing. Wow! Everyone tubing became a bunch of juvenile kids! Brian Maloney took videos with his Go Pro camera. The evidence is posted on the LBSC Facebook page! All the planned events were fun and well organized. The village offered a variety of restaurants and most of the members went out every evening to dine. We could walk to the village in about 10 minutes. Although I couldn t attend, I understand the Friday night mad-hatters contest and banquet was very successful. Unfortunately, I spent that evening in the emergency room in Kelowna s general hospital an hour and a half taxi trip!

9 Our president Kris needed x-rays of his shoulder. He had a broken collarbone which occurred skiing earlier that afternoon. Three other men had bruised ribs from falling. No injuries for the ladies. I can t imagine why?? The trip home was uneventful except for some long lay overs. Calgary airport was beautiful. On Saturday, March 18 th we ll have our annual Saint Patrick day party the Maloney s home. See attached flyer for details. Lance

These races will not be rescheduled. Future races at Mammoth, albeit not ULLR related, are: Sunday, March 19- Southern California Championships, 2 GS races Friday March 31- Monday April 2 Far West Championships Details will be sent in future blasts as information becomes available. Membership We now have 87 members. If we can acquire 4 new members in the next three months we will surpass last year s record of 90 and enter into our fourth year of continuous membership growth! March 2017 LBSC Ski Club Week Big White Trip Report By Shep & Tara The Club just finished the Big White Ski Week and what a wonderful adventure it was for all of the members!

The trip leader was even surprised that one member actually bought him a Grande Beer which he shared with the other CCSC Trip leader, David Felker.

11 March 2017 LBSC Ski Club Week Big White Trip Report By Shep & Tara The Club just finished the Big White Ski Week and what a wonderful adventure it was for all of the members! The week started out with Blue Skies and Sunshine the first 3 days and we finished each day at the Happy Valley Bull Lodge for Happy hour, with goodies and drinks and good times with friends. The trip leader was even surprised that one member actually bought him a Grande Beer which he shared with the other CCSC Trip leader, David Felker. Tara & Shep in the Big White Chair Kiddy Tree Run - very scary A few members joined in on the Valentines evening adventure of Tubing while other romantic members enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Gun Barrel Restaurant with excellent coffee. The ones who did go Tubing, reported that many said they had a great time! A few others decided to do their Tubing at a different time during Thursday s very snowy day. The Race that was scheduled for Thursday had to be canceled, because of the heavy snowfall, but was rescheduled for Friday which turned out to be a sunny day. However, because of the heavy snow conditions, there were a couple of members who suffered accidents, Lou Alvarado back sided a tree and Quincy Ho hurt his chest falling the wrong way.

However, the best fastest time went to the LBSC that had the 2 top winners with Mark Malan placing 1 st and Brian Maloney coming in 2 nd, and SPSC s Marc Jones finishing in 3 rd place, for the best times. The only sad event was the last day, when our President Kris Flaig, who skied with Jodi Hein for their last 2 runs, a snow snake grabbed Kris ski and he was air born to land with a broken left collar bone, just like Shep did many years earlier in Crested Butte.

13 Last night in Big White Snowshoe Pub enjoy music and fun Chris, Shep, Omey & Marc. The last Friday group dinner in the Black Diamond Restaurant was a fantastic event with great food selections, especially the dessert choices, too bad both Lance and Kris missed out that night while care giver Lance was in the ER in Kelowna Hospital waiting for Kris to return from X-ray. With the help of the Big White staff, the departure back to Kelowna Airport on Saturday was very enjoyable, even with two different departure times! The Bike & Barge Cruise scheduled for July 14 to 21, 2017 from Passau Germany to Budapest, has only 3 openings left on the trip, so now is the time to sign-up! 14 Racing Update from Big White Trip Brian Maloney Between the three ski groups in Big White that participated, Jodi Hein, of the Long Beach Ski Club won a medal for guessing the closest second score. 15 Hats off to the organizers of the trip Bob and Tara Shepard, with Dave and Lisa Felker! They organized the airfare, buses, room accommodations, tour of the mountain, tubing, welcome ceremony, lunch, and closing ceremony, was almost an impossible task to manage but they did it with grace. I just want to say Thank You organizers for all your hard work. It was a most Excellent Adventure! Brian

In the Mammoth Village Berger's Simple, good comfort food. On Minaret Road, across from the Village Toomey's An interesting take on comfort food, bison meatloaf, anyone? On Minaret Road, down from the Village. Roberto's A good Mexican taco/burrito joint, but On Old Mammoth Road be prepared for noise. Further afield are: Tamarack Lodge Convict Lake Inn Tom's Place Cafe I've never been, but have had great reports from friends who have. Elegant dining, the best wine service in the Mammoth area. Under new owners. If a storm chases you out of Mammoth, this is a good place for a good country breakfast. Up above town, in the Lakes Basin On Convict Lake, down 395, across from the airport. Down 395, in the village of Tom's Place The hands down best restaurant in Mammoth, according to an overheard conversation on the town shuttle, was opened by the former chef of Tamarack Lodge. It is located on the second floor, above the bowling alley. Try it and give me a report! All of the restaurants in Mammoth Lakes can be reached on the evening Red line bus, which runs between the Snowcreek Athletic Club and Mammoth village.
