1 SKI BREEZE April 2017 Volume 78, Issue 11 Kris Kolumn Mammoth Season Pass Deadline April 3 11:59 pm!!! We desperately need a Ski Breeze Editor or these reminders will become a thing of the past! Many thanks to five (5) members for stepping forward for Board Nominations!! Elections coming up! Have we had enough snow in Mammoth yet? They say more is on the way. So, you haven t missed it yet! Some of us, however, might have to wait until June to get our Spring Skiing in, as these pesky varmint injuries just keep nagging at us (e.g., me). Of course, WE STILL NEED A NEWSLETTER EDITOR! Before you think about skiing again in this year s massive dose of white fluffy (or not so fluffy) stuff, please consider whether you ll be buying your Mammoth (June, Big Bear, and Snow Summit) Mountain Pass at the cheapest price possible. If you say, YES, then you must buy it by 11:59 pm on Monday, April 3 rd. No kidding! Prices will go up they always do, and you ll want to make the most of your hard earned dollars, while you re still young enough to enjoy two seasons for the price of one.

2 Most of our newer members are buying their Season Pass, knowing that they can use it for possibly 4 more months this season, before proceeding to the next season! If that s not a kick in the pants, I don t know what is! A few of our newer members are so jazzed up that they have also volunteered to answer the call of servitude. Indentured? Not! Rather, a labor of love of their Ski Club and more fun than you can shake a ski pole at assuming you still have it in your hand after auguring onto the slopes at Big White! (Hah! Hah! inside joke not!) Of course, WE STILL NEED A NEWSLETTER EDITOR! Please make yourself familiar with the following volunteers, and hence, nominees for YOUR Ski Club Board. Luis has let it be known that he ll be very happy to take on the reigns of Treasurer from our latest CPA, Ziba Gibson. Luis looks after an annual budget of over $6M where he works, likes QuickBooks and talks a good talk. So, I think he ll probably do well at helping us to keep solvent, while reminding us constantly to be thrifty, because actually, our budget is merely peanuts compared to anyone s household accounts! Mark Malan has tossed his eager hat into the ring for Week-Long Trips. He is more than jazzed up after having gone to Big White, then having taken his lovely Marietta to Italy for 10 days. Between you and me, I think she found a way to bribe him into providing similar experiences every year for the next two decades. Shep thinks this is all a good idea. The bribing yes, but more to the point, Mark working with Shep to learn all the tricks to the trade, or more precisely, learning to party with the big boys (and girls!) and learn the ropes at the Annual Far West Ski Association Conference in June in a little place called Boise, Idaho. There may be a few other tricks, so Mark and Shep and their very capable spices for life, will be having more fun than you can stomp a ski (or cowboy) boot on! Next up, Chris Dawson has allowed me to talk him into considering a position with the Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs, knowing fully well, that this sailor (Chris) may be on the high seas for 2-3 weeks at a time. Chris, however, has been around the block (not to mention a few continents), and has actual support from several key people in whatever he chooses. I believe that this young man, over a mere 2-year period will likely attract a number of young and talented leaders to the austere L.A. Council.

3 If worse comes to worst, then Chris will merely grace our Board once a month (unless sailing here or there, most likely there) with a few well-placed suggestions. A peanut gallery, he is not! I cannot say enough about our next two volunteers. Dennis Pollack, world class architect and sailor, has agreed to sit in on our Board once a month (when not flying hither and thither). He brings a great deal of enthusiasm and perspective, as do all these great people! Lastly, and certainly not least, Marcia Gatz (sometimes accompanied by her wonderful hubby, Sean) rounds out our panel of Board volunteers. (Did that sound right?) Marcia (Mar-c-a) is a spark plug if ever there was one! I already know she ll be great to work with, will help push us along into the beginning of the 21 st Century and will be a key leader in the years to come just by being her fabulous self! Of course, WE STILL NEED A NEWSLETTER EDITOR! These volunteers, as well as the rest of the Board Members who are hanging around for the ride, are not shoe-ins! No sirree! First, we must officially close nominations at the April 5 th General Meeting at Ecco s. Second, your Board must send out ballots and you must (please, oh please) return them! Third, your Board must review and accept the election results at the May 10 th Board Meeting. And lastly, we must have a shindig to start all shin-digs, otherwise known as our Annual Dinner-Dance (May 20 th ) to induct our new guppies and give our out-going guppies a little token of our esteem for their hard work, patience, and servitude sometimes known as a kick in the butt but, in Our Ski Club, known as a round of applause, plus a real token of our appreciation for helping to keep this austere organization well waxed (err greased?). DID I MENTION THAT WE STILL NEED A NEWSLETTER EDITOR??? Lance assures me that our May 20 th Annual Dinner Dance may be an event to never forget, replete with a number of outstanding raffle items and maybe a few silent auction items that you will want to bid your hardly-earned tax returns on. All seriousness aside, you will be laughing in the aisles, just like the last few years, no matter how deep I must dig for ill-gotten jokes, skeletons, and mysterious Mammoth Mysteries.

4 Just three last notes about your crumbling President. Firstly, if you see me crumbled on the slops again, I shall, under pain of death or broken bones, refuse steadfastly to ever cry again or to show the merest sign of a tear. At the same time, I ll likewise not weep in frustration if my plans for working on my house go up in smoke as a result of another injury. But, we all know that that s not happening ever again, as the virtue of caution and the cautious approach to skiing has forever embodied itself in my soul as a result of that snow-snake incident on February 17 th. Secondly, should anyone be fool-hardy enough to think that they d like to be President or one of the Vice Presidents (we ve got more than a few of them!), or Board Members-at-Large, you are welcome to write-in the candidate(s) of your choice on the ballots that we shall be circulating by mid-april. Please know that we ll need you to return your ballots within a couple of weeks so that we can notify the winners of such vote and gain their acceptance of taking charge of their duly elected position(s). Lastly, you should all know that I go under the knife on Friday, March 31 st, a day that I hope brings only slight pain, in an effort to correct a misshapen collarbone that was broken on February 17 th at Big White. Ok, so, I m just a little vain, as I prefer to not look the either Quasi-Modo or the hunchback of Notre Dame. Having said that, please, oh please, get your condo applications into Roberto for this weekend s trip to Mammoth or the coming trips (to be published), AND PLEASE FIND A NEWSLETTER EDITOR FOR YOUR SKI CLUB! 7 Get Loose with Lance - April Social Article By Lance This year the Maloney s hosted our St. Patrick s Day party and as expected, it was a tremendous success! Over 30+ guests joined this event. The Maloney s definitely have the best party house for our events. The main dishes were provided by the club and those members who brought a dish, also provided very generous servings. I want to thank Lisa and Brian for all their generosity. And I know all our LBSC members feel the same, so please show them your appreciation!! On Saturday, April 15 th we will have wine tasting at the Wine Crush located on Broadway Ave in Long Beach. This is an outdoor event and with a very nice and relaxing setting.

9 Craig s Crag By Craig Gibson, Race VP and Membership Chair Kris Flaig Urged to Resign as President of the Long Beach Ski Club The LBSC Board of Directors has voted unanimously to demand that Kris Flaig immediately resign as president of the Long Beach Ski Club. This demand comes as a result of recent FBI wiretaps showing that Mr. Flaig colluded with Russian intelligence to influence the outcome of his presidency. Mr. Flaig in a 4:00 a.m. rant tweeted, LBSC Board Members- all low energy losers FBI- all fools APRIL FOOLS! Speaking of April Fools, 4/1 marks the weekend of the Far West Championships held at Mammoth. Here is the schedule: Friday, March 31 st - Race clinics 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. slalom 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. GS. Saturday, April 1 st - Slalom Sunday, April 2 nd GS Further details will be sent in a future blast as more information becomes available. Also on April Fool s day (no joke), Cali4nia pass holders will enjoy exclusive lift access to Mammoth Mountain beginning at 7:30 a.m., followed by a complimentary hot breakfast at McCoy Station from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Lifts expected to operate are Village Gondola, Lower Gondola, Chairs 1, 2, 3, 15 and 16. Continuing with the fools theme, new evidence has surfaced as to who placed peanuts in my ski boots. This Saturday a retaliatory prank will be unleashed and the magnitude of immaturity will be immense. Craig

10 2017 April Ski Week Article By Shep & Tara The Bormio & Florence Italy ski trip was a fun week beginning at LAX for our flight on Swiss Airline with a stop in Zurich, then onto Milan where we had two members looking for their luggage. It was Steve Anselmino whose large bag did not show up. The bus trip to Bormio was delayed due to the lost bag, so our bus driver arranged for a dinner stop at one of the restaurants en route & luckily, everyone looked like they enjoyed the stop. We even loaded up on some local Italian wines! We arrived at the Larice Bianco Bormio Hotel around 10:30PM, the hotel staff was great at getting all of our luggage into the hotel. And after everyone had their baggage in their rooms, the hotel staff prepared small sandwiches and little appetizers for our arrival and also opened the bar! Kikko, who is the son of the hotel owners, gave an orientation of the hotel features and the village events. He also gave a Bormio Ski tour on Monday. Early Sunday morning, Shep headed to the Lift Pass Group Office to arrange for all the 5 out of 6 days passes with mountain insurance, which required a little additional work and reprinting all of the passes. A few members decided not to ski, but many did hit the slopes of Bormio and had a great ski day. The Larice Bianco Hotel staff continued to offer excellent dinners with two to three different selections on the evening menu with a wonderful large selection of salad items to choose from. And the desserts were very creative and good!

11 All the LBSC & SPSC members got to taste and enjoy the famous Bormio eggs for their breakfast each morning along with other goodies they had to select from the breakfast offering. The Monday night Bormio Village block party in the old Church square was well attended by many of the members who enjoyed hot red wine from a 30 inch copper pot and a table full of many different spirits they could sample from limoncello to grappa, and where good times were had by all members. Everyone on the Cable Bridge going to the Monday Night Village Festival. Bormio Senior Ski Pass Tuesday s all day snowstorm was a good day not to ski for some of the members, who enjoyed the time shopping by the Mountain and the Old Town, while checking out the historical Village, Churches and Museums. They also took in a tasty lunch at the Bormio Café Pub. Some even headed up to the Roman Hot Spa in the Bormio Mountain. And on Thursday, many members enjoyed a fun side trip to St. Moritz.

Bormio Roman Hot Spa QC Terme Bagni di Bormio The rest of the ski week in Bormio was fantastic skiing at both Caterina and Colombano Mountains where the snow conditions were excellent and the Sunny Valley Restaurant with the Ice Igloo next door had very good lunches with a friendly staff. Seventeen of the Ski Club members spent 5 days enjoying the great city of Florence. Our Diplomat 4 star hotel was next to the train station, were Marietta Malan was so fantastic at putting a train trip from Florence to Cinque Terre Village of Vernazza, one of the most popular villages in the 5 Terre s. Ten of the members enjoyed a wonderful day checking out the Gelato shops and beautiful waterfront restaurants. The following day Marietta organized a bus trip to 2 of Tuscany s Chianti wineries to learn about 100% Chianti with the Black Rooster, at both Morellino Di Scansano & Fattoria Lornanzo wineries which turned out excellent! 13 The rest of the time in Florence was spent checking out the great Churches and Museums, also enjoying the Four Seasons Concert in St. Stephen Church Auditorium to hear Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach & Pechelbel! The shopping was very creative from Gelato to B&W dresses Harley Davison Shop. The best Gelato shop in Florence. 14 Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar April and May dates TBD Spring Skiing! The February trip went on as usual, even though some members had to pull out. Friday was a decent day with over cast skies and good snow. However, Saturday was the polar opposite! It was a day of early ups for season pass holders and it was blizzard conditions, which made the free breakfast a welcome event. For me, my ski day ended at 11:00 AM! It was that rough! Sunday, the snow turned to rain, my rider and I left and after a good country breakfast at Tom's Place and returned home early. The first March trip was a big success! Blue bird skies reigned, the temperatures were in the low 40's. There was still plenty of snow, and just like the old days, you could step off the snow and onto the 2nd floor balcony of the main lodge. Ten members showed up for the trip, which required two condos. It was the largest turn out in many years. I am planning an unscheduled trip for the weekend of April 22-23, for the annual Mammoth Pond Skim. I hope there will be great interest in going skiing. There is possible a trip going in May, there is that much snow this year so let s take advantage of it! For your convenience, attached are the Weekend Trip Application and Release of Liability. In the Mammoth Village Berger's Simple, good comfort food. On Minaret Road, across from the Village Toomey's An interesting take on comfort food, bison meatloaf, anyone? On Minaret Road, down from the Village. Roberto's A good Mexican taco/burrito joint, but On Old Mammoth Road be prepared for noise. Further afield are: Tamarack Lodge Convict Lake Inn Tom's Place Cafe I've never been, but have had great reports from friends who have. Elegant dining, the best wine service in the Mammoth area. Under new owners. If a storm chases you out of Mammoth, this is a good place for a good country breakfast. Up above town, in the Lakes Basin On Convict Lake, down 395, across from the airport. Down 395, in the village of Tom's Place The hands down best restaurant in Mammoth, according to an overheard conversation on the town shuttle, was opened by the former chef of Tamarack Lodge. It is located on the second floor, above the bowling alley. Try it and give me a report! All of the restaurants in Mammoth Lakes can be reached on the evening Red line bus, which runs between the Snowcreek Athletic Club and Mammoth village. RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS, EXPRESS ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT I do hereby affirm and acknowledge that I have been fully informed of the inherent hazards and risks associated with Winter Sports Activities, including travel to and from winter designations. I fully understand that these risks can lead to severe injury and even loss of life. I further understand that: 1.Risk of injury from the activity and equipment utilized is significant including the potential for broken bones, severe injuries to the head, neck, and back or other bodily injuries that my result in permanent disability and death. 2. Possible equipment failure and/or malfunction or misuse of my own or others equipment. 3. I AGREE THAT I WILL WEAR APPROVED PROTECTIVE GEAR AS DECREED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE SPORT I AM PARTICIPATING IN. However, protective gear cannot guarantee the participant s safety. I further agree that no helmet can protect the wearer against all potential head injuries or prevent injury to the wearer s face, neck or spinal cord. Failure to wear a helmet may result in denial of any claim(s) against the Long Beach Ski Club Inc. and its insurance provider. 4. Variation and/or steepness of terrain, variation or changes in surfaces including but not limited to snow surfaces, ice, bare spots, rocks, stumps, debris, cliffs, trees, fences, posts, trees, light poles, signs, buildings, roads, walkways, ramps, rails, stairs, pyramids, manual pads, bowls, half-pipes, jumps, padded and non-padded barriers, other persons, and other natural and man-made hazards. 5. My own negligence and/or the negligence of others, including but not limited to operator error and guide decision making including misjudging terrain, weather, riding surfaces or other obstacles. 6. Exposure to the elements and temperature extremes may result if frost nip, frost bite, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sunburn, hypothermia and dehydration. 7. Dangers associated with exposure to natural elements include but are not limited to avalanche, rock fall, inclement weather, thunder and lighting, severe and or varied wind, temperature and other weather conditions. I understand the description of these risks is not complete and unknown or unanticipated risks may result in injury, illness, or death. Nevertheless, I wish to proceed and I freely accept and expressly assume all risk, dangers and hazards that may arise from such activities which could result in personal injury, loss of life and property damage to me. In consideration of being allowed to participate in Long Beach Ski Club activities, I hereby agree as follows: 8. To waive and release any and all claims based upon negligence, active or passive with the exception of intentional, wanton or willful misconduct that I may have in the future against Long Beach Ski Club Inc., their officers, directors, employees, representatives, agents, and volunteers from liability and responsibility whatsoever and for any claims or causes of action that I, my estate, heirs, survivors, executors, or assigns may have for personal injury, property damage, or wrongful death arising from the above activities whether caused by active or passive negligence of the Long Beach Ski Club Inc. or otherwise.

By executing this document, I agree to hold Long Beach Ski Club Inc. harmless and indemnify them in conjunction with any injury, disability, death, or loss or damage to person or property that may occur as a result of my engaging in the above activities. 10. By entering into this agreement, I am not relying on any oral or written representation or statements made by the Long Beach Ski Club Inc., other than what is set forth in this agreement. I further agree that this Agreement shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States of America. 11. If any provision, section, subsection, clause or phrase of this release is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that portion shall be severed from this contract. The remainder of this contract will then be construed as though the unenforceable portion had never been contained in this document. I hereby declare that I am of legal age and am competent to sign this Agreement or, if not, that my parent or legal guardian shall sign on my behalf, and that my parent or legal guardian is in complete understanding and concurrence with this agreement.
