1 November 2018 Volume 80, Issue Kris Kolumn By Kris 80 Years of Skiing, Snowboarding, Events, and Making Life-Long Friends! El Nino: Fall or Winter? Storms Events or what? It s in the books! Members of our Ski Club have been making life-long friendships for 80 Years. And, playing in the snow for most of it. Newsletters from decades past tell mostly of weddings, drafting into the army (teaching skiing in Alaska), births, deaths, and plans for ski trips both usual and unique. And, so, we continue. A few more new members this year, 72. We re aiming for 90 by the end of the season. Please mention the LBSC to your friends and neighbors. No need to keep us a secret any longer! A big THANK YOU to everyone who came to the OPEN HOUSE. It was good to see Ray and Sandi, Heidi, and new members too. The VPs were so darned entertaining in their updates that we never got around to other parts of the program. The raffle featured bottles from around the world (none of which I could pronounce - thanks to Roberto and Lance s connections with our wine tasting venues), a locally world famous fruit cake, and yet another Harbor Kruise. We enjoyed a wonderful sunset on the water, at the Golden Sails, thanks to Lance s hard work. Hats off to Catherine who has almost single-handedly updated our website! She expects us to be on-line with all of our trip, membership and event payments soon! As for El Nino, even NOAA can t stick with just one forecast, as equatorial Pacific temps keep changing, mostly remaining warm. The nation s south will definitely be moist. Somehow, the upper plains might be warmer than usual, which means bearable, right? As your president, I am sticking my head out to say that we ll have enough snow for skiing in December (maybe Thanksgiving) and each condo/race weekend. April could be a big dump; we ll know better in early Meanwhile, Mark has a brief update on Big Sky, Eric gives us good reasons to tune up for racing and skiing for the fun of it, Mike takes us on another outing, Lance says to watch for a wine tasting in November, and Craig encourages us to bring your friends to our events. And, yes, the Red Trolley Ale at Golden Sails was good. Cheers! Kris

In any case, winter is on its way, I know between the Big Sky (1 more space available) trip in February, the various Mammoth weekend trips and whatever the mid-week shorties turn out to be, we ll all enjoy many vertical feet soon. 7 Mike s Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Mike Zullo weekendtrips@longbeachskiclub.org I recently returned from Mammoth where I viewed our Snowflower condos for this season and they are good quality and comfortable. We certainly will have one full condo for the December trip with Saturday night dinner and Mammoth s Night of Lights show. You can get the Early Bird price of $225 if we have your payment and forms by November 12. Look for sign up forms in this newsletter. 8 Weekend Trip Update Our first Mammoth weekend trip is December We will carpool up there on Thursday the 13 th and the club will provide Saturday night dinner before we go to Mammoth Night of Lights celebration at Canyon Lodge. We will check out from Snowflower condos on Sunday the 16 th, ski most of the day and drive home. Condos are 2 bedrooms and loft with 3 bathrooms. Trip cost is $250 each person. If you pay in full before November 12 the Early Bird price is $225 each. 9 RACING WITH ERIC By Eric Hartman Hey sports fans! Fall is finally here. Cold mornings and beautiful days. Telling me that snow is just around the corner. Are you ready? One of the best ways for you to get that tune up for the season is to participate in Ski Ride Race Camp ( at Mammoth Mountain (Dec ). The camp has been going since 1981 and is a great way to skill up and tune up for the season. I also enjoy skiing that week because I am skiing with those who are at about the same skill level as myself. The groups are small 5-8. No one likes to ski with others and feel like they are holding the group back. The other great thing is that you are skiing with the same instructor all week. They get to see you in many different conditions and areas of difficulty and can pinpoint key areas for improvement. My wife and I have been going on and off for nearly 30 years. For many years, it has been our only week-long ski trip. The camp offers many different packages. From beginner to advanced ski or race only, to combinations of in-between. They will video tape you during the week so that you can see what you look like coming down the hill and get input from your instructor. There is an optional race at the end of the week, but you do not need to race to participate in the camp. It is also a way for you to test the water, so to speak, for racing. Also, racing does not mean you need a skin suit, or racing skis (which applies all year). It does require more focus for a short period of time that you may not normally do on the rest of the hill. Racing is a way to improve your skills. Just having the required turns can prove to be more difficult than free-skiing. It does force you to think about how to approach each turn and the mechanics of getting through the turn then getting ready for the next turn. I hope that if you have not participated in the camp in the past that you would give it serious consideration to go this year. I look forward to seeing you out there on the slopes! 9

11 Get Loose with Lance - Social By Lance Liebl social@longbeachskiclub.org On November 20 th the club celebrated our 80 th anniversary at the Best Western Golden Sails Hotel. About 35 people attended. It was nice to see new and old members sitting together. The raffling was a highlight for the evening. Mike Zullo won a gift certificate from Cesar s Bistro, Cynthia Carters boyfriend Bob won two bottles of wine, Sandy Martiloni and myself joined together to outbid everyone for Kris Flaig s famous fruit cake, and Mark Malan won the bid for a cruise on Kris Flaig s sailboat. Kris emceed the event and several board members made short presentations. Mike Zullo, Mark Malan, Craig Gibson and myself talked about the last year of activities and what the club has planned for the future. The upcoming ski season was discussed, with emphasis on Mammoth and the February Big Sky Mountain week long trip. Our VP of Week Trips, Mark Malan is planning to schedule some short weekend trips to Park City and Lake Tahoe. Watch for details. As for social, l lam looking for a new venue for wine tasting in mid-november. On December 1 st, we will have our annual Christmas party at Bob Miller s home. See the flyer for details. 11

RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS, EXPRESS ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT I do hereby affirm and acknowledge that I have been fully informed of the inherent hazards and risks associated with Winter Sports Activities, including travel to and from winter designations. I fully understand that these risks can lead to severe injury and even loss of life. I further understand that: 1. Risk of injury from the activity and equipment utilized is significant including the potential for broken bones, severe injuries to the head, neck, and back or other bodily injuries that my result in permanent disability and death. 2. Possible equipment failure and/or malfunction or misuse of my own or others equipment. 3. I AGREE THAT I WILL WEAR APPROVED PROTECTIVE GEAR AS DECREED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE SPORT I AM PARTICIPATING IN. However, protective gear cannot guarantee the participant s safety. I further agree that no helmet can protect the wearer against all potential head injuries or prevent injury to the wearer s face, neck or spinal cord. Failure to wear a helmet may result in denial of any claim(s) against the Long Beach Ski Club Inc. and its insurance provider. 4. Variation and/or steepness of terrain, variation or changes in surfaces including but not limited to snow surfaces, ice, bare spots, rocks, stumps, debris, cliffs, trees, fences, posts, trees, light poles, signs, buildings, roads, walkways, ramps, rails, stairs, pyramids, manual pads, bowls, half-pipes, jumps, padded and non-padded barriers, other persons, and other natural and man-made hazards. 5. My own negligence and/or the negligence of others, including but not limited to operator error and guide decision making including misjudging terrain, weather, riding surfaces or other obstacles. 6. Exposure to the elements and temperature extremes may result if frost nip, frost bite, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sunburn, hypothermia and dehydration. 7. Dangers associated with exposure to natural elements include but are not limited to avalanche, rock fall, inclement weather, thunder and lighting, severe and or varied wind, temperature and other weather conditions. I understand the description of these risks is not complete and unknown or unanticipated risks may result in injury, illness, or death. Nevertheless, I wish to proceed and I freely accept and expressly assume all risk, dangers and hazards that may arise from such activities which could result in personal injury, loss of life and property damage to me. In consideration of being allowed to participate in Long Beach Ski Club activities, I hereby agree as follows: 8. To waive and release any and all claims based upon negligence, active or passive with the exception of intentional, wanton or willful misconduct that I may have in the future against Long Beach Ski Club Inc., their officers, directors, employees, representatives, agents, and volunteers from liability and responsibility whatsoever and for any claims or causes of action that I, my estate, heirs, survivors, executors, or assigns may have for personal injury, property damage, or wrongful death arising from the above activities whether caused by active or passive negligence of the Long Beach Ski Club Inc. or otherwise. 9. By executing this document, I agree to hold Long Beach Ski Club Inc. harmless and indemnify them in conjunction with any injury, disability, death, or loss or damage to person or property that may occur as a result of my engaging in the above activities. 17 RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS, EXPRESS ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT 10. By entering into this agreement, I am not relying on any oral or written representation or statements made by the Long Beach Ski Club Inc., other than what is set forth in this agreement. I further agree that this Agreement shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States of America. 11. If any provision, section, subsection, clause or phrase of this release is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that portion shall be severed from this contract. The remainder of this contract will then be construed as though the unenforceable portion had never been contained in this document. I hereby declare that I am of legal age and am competent to sign this Agreement or, if not, that my parent or legal guardian shall sign on my behalf, and that my parent or legal guardian is in complete understanding and concurrence with this agreement. I HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, I UNDERSTAND IT, AND I AGREE TO BE BOUND BY IT.
