1 September 2018 Volume 80, Issue 9 Kris Kolumn By Kris president@longbeachskiclub.org Life-long friendships are being made in our Ski Club El Presidente is working hard to get into skiing shape again El Nino continues to threaten my prognostication Ladies and gentlemen, it does my heart good to know that sooo many people within this club are hosting sooo many parties, dinners, gatherings, etc! This just goes to show you that that part of our motto rings true: we make lifelong friendships. And, that s what s happening. This weekend alone, is jam-packed with activities: Lance will be hosting (but not paying for) a wine tasting at District Wine. Sunday morning Mike will kick start the day with a bike/rollerblade along Long Beach shore, followed with brunch at Belmont Brewery. I and my ship worthy crew will be sailing Dave Lopez and company (his Open House prize) around the Long Beach harbor, treating them to sun, appetizers and libations. Mark your calendars for this year s Annual Open House! We re going to do something a little different. After all, this is the 80 th Anniversary of our Club s founding in October of 1938! We certainly are not going to fine people for skiing in a dangerous location or doing something funny during the summer, as we have done for the past few years. Nope. I figure it s time to celebrate the end of our 80 th year and beginning of our 81 st year by doing things just a little differently. This time we re giving small (not the smallest) denominations of paper money (i.e., US currency) to members, potential members, and guests based on audience reaction! So, if you d like to leave the Open House with more dough than you had earlier, you should bring your best friends and neighbors! Let s have some fun!! You may have heard that El Nino is in the news more and more. They roughly agree with what I ve been saying about the west coast: more precipitation in general, but the exact locations vary with a moderate El Nino. They probably don t want to hype it this time, and they could be totally wrong. But, I think we ll get more than average snow fall, as long as the winds continue to blow! Yes!! When the wind blows, it dries out the land, which then gets colder as we go thru fall and the beginning of winter. Then, the ground is colder, the snow accumulates sooner! Although my rotator cuff is not quite up to Mike s wonderful outings, I am doing a great deal at the gym with light-weighted shoulder exercises and running on the beach. We have a wait list and are looking for additional airfare so tell you friends to send in their applications ASAP! We hope to come up with another 10 spots. This mountain is bigger than Mammoth in acreage and vertical incline. While nobody has more lifts than Mammoth, ya just don t need em at Big Sky because they don t sell the massive number of lift tickets. Big Sky Resort has a minimum of 400 inches of powder on 5,800+ skiable acres and 4,350 vertical feet. Lift lines are small to non-existent. More than 2,300 acres of beginner and intermediate terrain, and 3,525 acres of advanced and expert terrain, and 300 degrees of skiing off of Lone Peak. Condos have been reserved for the ski season at Snowflower Condos in Mammoth, located adjacent to the Red Line Shuttle. All trips will run from Thursday to Sunday and we will share rides and drive up. Here are the dates: December January February March All condos are two bedrooms, three baths with a loft (seven per condo) and all trips coincide with Ullr and Far West races. Prices are $250 each person or Early Bird price is $225 if paid 31 days before arrival date. Saturday night dinner is provided and members that are not on the trip can join in for $10. Our board is working on easy online payment through our website. Let s work on strength and flexibility to reduce chances of injury and maximize our hours on the mountain! Our summer Bike/Blade and Kayak/Sup events have been well attended with 14 on our last two outings. Thanks to Dana and Keith for leading the last Kayak/Sup. 10 LONGBEACH SKI CLUB SEPTEMBER 2018 Volume 80, Issue 9 RACING WITH ERIC By Eric Hartman racing@longbeachskiclub.org These are the confirmed Ullr/Rokka race dates for at Mammoth, confirmed by Mammoth Race Department. Ullr/Rokka may cancel any one of these based on whether or expected low turnout due to large participation in out of state ski weeks. Dec Jan Feb March The location and date for the Far West finals have not yet been announced. FWRA will be meeting Sept 22 and the finals date should come after that meeting. Second News are the final standings for last season: Club Final Points Place AERO LONG CENT SEA 10 4 CONE 5 5 We averaged about 7 racers per race and Aerospace averaged 12. I would think if we could get a few more racers to register and show up we would give Aerospace a good run for their money.

11 LONGBEACH SKI CLUB SEPTEMBER 2018 Volume 80, Issue 9 Get Loose with Lance - Social By Lance Liebl social@longbeachskiclub.org In August, we had our last annual barbecue at Casa Lopez, home of long time club member David Lopez. 19 members attended. It is obvious that those attending prefer to drink, eat great food and share conversation. We are truly a special club and have developed many long-term relationships. Our president, Kris Flaig,, presented a special award to Dave Lopez. While doing errands, Kris happened to meet a man in Lake Forest, Jonathan, who also knew Dave. He s best buds with David's son. He confided that while he and Dave s son were all staying on a boat in a tropical paradise, Jonathan was cruising the shops on the island and stumbled onto two bottles of extremely rare and good single malt Scotch. Because Jonathan is in the wine and spirits business, he asked someone to make solid copper coasters for each the 4 guys on the trip with their initials on them. Kris confided that he would be seeing David at the Casa Lopez BBQ that day, so Jonathan asked him to give David his copper coaster with his initials on it. On Saturday, September 8 th, we will be having a wine tasting at District Wine at 5pm. On Saturday, October 6 th, we ll be having wine tasting at Bistro Saint Germaine at 5pm always a sell-out. Show up on time for good seating. On Saturday, October 20 th, we ll have our Annual Open House at the Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club. Watch for flyers with details. This Saturday, I will be crewing for Kris on his 30-foot sloop. This is an annual race from Long Beach to Dana Point. Hope we are not lost at sea.
