Required to receive work orders for glass repair in schools and administrative buildings in the HISD. 2. Responsible for completing work orders. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Glazier with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Facilities Management and Operations department. The worker is required to replace glass and associated materials in schools and administrative buildings owned and operated by the HISD. It should be noted that this worker must be very careful when lifting and manipulating pieces of glass. Glass pieces often have sharp edges and corners which pose a significant cut hazard. The worker is required to safely transport glass and associated materials when completing work orders. Significant Weights The heaviest weight lifted by a Glazier is a solid core wood door that is usually lifted with hand placement ranging between waist and chest height when performing the job. The frequency of lifting over the course of a normal workday would be classified as occasional. It is also important to understand that the heavier weights are lifted only on an occasional basis and that weights lifted at greater frequencies are lighter in nature. 2 NOTE: Glass is generally lifted utilizing neutral forearm rotation with palmar pinch. The glass is also lifted utilizing suction cups with a handle component that is attached to the glass (affording the employee to choose grip pattern). The weight of a piece of framed glass (used in doors) is 6.3 pounds. This was described to be an average size piece of glass used in a door. These pieces cannot exceed 100 square inches per Fire Marshall codes. This piece of glass is lifted between floor and 60 inches above the ground (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder) on a frequent basis. The weight of a 32 inch by 34 inch piece of mirrored glass is 22.5 pounds. This glass can be lifted from floor to over the shoulder level (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder). The weight of an 18" X 72" piece of fire rated glass is 29.4 pounds. This is be lifted between floor and over shoulder levels (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder). The piece of glass was described to be a good representation of what may be used in a side light of a door. The weight of a 68" X 28" piece of tempered glass (representative of a side light piece of glass used in a trophy case) is 38.4 pounds. This piece of glass is lifted between floor and over shoulder levels (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder). The weight of a 48" X 96" piece of lexan (polycarbonate glass) is 41.1 pounds. This material is generally lifted from floor to over shoulder (hand placement usually waist to over shoulder) when installing in entryways or door units in cafeterias. The weight of a 60" X 84" piece of lexan (polycarbonate glass) is 51.0 pounds. This material is generally lifted from floor to over head (hand placement usually waist to over head) when installing in entryways or door units in cafeterias. This is unbreakable glass that is placed in schools or buildings where windows are broken frequently. The weight of a 36" X 80" solid core wood door is 90.6 pounds. These doors can be lifted from floor to chest level (hand placement generally waist to chest level) to place the door on a saw horse or work bench to cut out a hole for glass. These doors are generally lifted with bilateral neutral grip. Work Environment The work of a Glazier with Houston Independent School District is performed indoors and outdoors in a school system environment. The worker is required to wear a uniform consistent with the nature of the work. Force takes into consideration the average velocity and/or acceleration of the lift and the effort necessary to overcome inertia. Other factors taken into consideration are the necessary strength to grasp and perform manipulative activities that have an associated strength factor. Upon review of this job, no peak forces were measured. It is important to note that the worker is required to push/pull against hand tools and equipment to perform work related tasks and activities. The worker is required to push/pull against these items when installing glass and associated materials. These forces are of insignificant value but repetitive in nature. Lifting Activities Note: All lifting activities cover both lifting and lowering processes. The point of origin and/or the destination of the lift are classified in the three body zone ranges. The weight ranges given are the weight of the product to be lifted or lowered and does not include the force to be employed in the lifting process. Frequencies are calculated based upon the number of lifts and lowers, the average time of each lift, and then divided into the total time in the workday. The worker must discuss any problems or concerns with the supervisor and understand the nature of work to be completed related to all individual work orders. Required Physical Demands Description Standing The Glazier is required to be on his/her feet for the performance of the duties associated with this function. Walking The Glazier is required to move about for the performance of the duties associated with this function. Carrying Carrying is required to perform the movement of paperwork, clipboard, or writing utensil during the course of this function. Reaching Knees to Shoulder The Glazier is required to reach between the level of the knees and the shoulder while performing the duties associated with this function. The worker must be able to grasp and manipulate paperwork. Handling Required to perform the duties associated with this essential function. Function Description: The Glazier is responsible for repairing and replacing glass and associated materials in schools and administrative buildings owned and operated by the HISD. This includes windows, doors, surfaces, and individual items (such as trophy cases/fire extinguisher cradles). The worker uses hand tools to install glass. A caulking gun is also used to secure glass pieces. The worker must take extra caution when carrying and transporting glass due to cut hazards. At times, the worker must carry glass pieces up ladders for installation. The worker also lifts and utilizes tools. Glass pieces are lifted and placed in doors and other individual items. Crouching is usually for a limited period of time and may be interchangeable with kneeling. Reaching Below Knees The Glazier is required to reach below his/her knees when lifting and placing tools and equipment. Reaching Knees to Shoulder The Glazier is required to reach between the level of the knees and the shoulder while performing most of the duties associated with this function. Required to lift and place tools and equipment. Required to lift and place glass and associated materials. Reaching Above Shoulder The Glazier is required to perform reaching above the level of the shoulder. Handling The Glazier is required to perform handling with grasping with many different types of coupling when performing this function. Required to grip and utilize hand tools. Required to lift and manipulate pieces of glass and associated materials. Grip Strength - Neutral Grip The Glazier is required to perform grasping with the elbow in a neutral position (thumb on top) during the performance of the duties associated with this function.
