2 Memory Corner Stimulating Memories Through Photos By Ava M. Stinnett We all need to feel engaged and entertained, to stay active both physically and mentally. Just because someone has Alzheimer s disease or another dementia doesn t mean that need disappears. But because of the cognitive decline that accompanies dementia, how people get engaged often has to change. An obvious sign of dementia is memory loss. One way to help stimulate the memories for someone with Alzheimer s whether in the early or late stages of the disease is by using visual aids, specifically photos. But how can families and caregivers use the photos to create opportunities for those who are affected by dementia to connect with those around them and themselves? Start by choosing a photo album that is sturdy but easy to hold. Keep the design simple so the photos are easy to focus on. Use plastic protective sheets over each page so the album will last indefinitely. Make the pictures large and clearly labeled. Place photos in chronological order. Your loved one may enjoy photos that span key times in their life, such as childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Include shots of family members (across generations), caregivers, and friends to show relationships and to spark recognition of people in the photos. Be sure to also select photos that show your loved one s achievements and awards, hobbies, and travel. If possible, work with your loved one as you create the book and compile the photos. Begin with just a few pages. This is a good opportunity to share memories and conversation. You may find that the person with dementia has many interesting stories to tell. Revisit the album from time to time, adding additional photos to reflect the past and present. The photo album can be used as a distraction technique for refocusing during difficult symptoms, as a security tool when the person is taken to unfamiliar places (e.g., the hospital), and to promote well-being and a sense of accomplishment. The album can also be used as a bridge to the past and a connection to the present.

4 Milt Blackman was born 1938 in the very small area of Archie, Louisiana. As a youth, Milt was brought up with the Baptist church, and even sang within the choir. Milt eventually moved to Chico, Ca with his family, where he eventually ended up graduating from both the high school and State University of Chico; however, after college Milt went into the Army to serve his country, during which he also married the love of his life in 1959 to Lorna. After serving the military, Milt worked various jobs while working towards his degree to become an Optometrist. Milt and Lorna had two children, Kelly and Kevin, and raised them in the beautiful town of Davis. Around Carlton, Milt is an avid walker, and has a singing voice like no other! Jaime Delgado Was born in the farm town of Woodland, CA to parents Jaime senior and Rebecca. Jaime is the oldest of three boys and plays the big brother role as best as he can. during his adolescence, Jaime enrolled in a Sheriff Cadet Program for about 5 years. During this time, Jaime had aspired to become a DEA agent, but eventually changed his career course upon finding a job at Carlton Senior Living. Jaime is now currently going to college, working on a degree in gerontology and healthcare due to his innate care skills and sincerity. When Jaime isn t working, he enjoys having some quality family time either barbecuing, going on hikes, or out to the nearby lakes. If Jaime isn t with family, he s out traveling, often times to Oxnard near Ventura County where some of his family resides.

12 Exercise is for Everyone Frailty may be common in the elderly, but it is not inevitable, and studies suggest it can be delayed by leading active and productive lives. Staying healthy longer is possible by following some preventative measures including regular physical activity. Live 2 B Healthy strives to alleviate many of the common issues surrounding aging by centering our exercise focus on building balance and strength to improve overall health while reducing falls and the need for hospitalization. Now more than ever seniors need exercise. Seniors at any age are completely capable of participating in exercise programs like Live 2 B Healthy and study after study has proven how beneficial it is for their overall wellness. Exercise training can protect against a number of chronic diseases of old age. More important, it maximizes residual function. In some instances, biological age is reduced by as much as 20 years. Life expectancy is increased, partial and total disability is delayed, and there are major gains in quality adjusted life expectancy. Exercise is a very important component of healthy living for senior citizens. - Many believe that exercise is unsafe for elders, but countless studies have shown that exercise benefits individuals at every age. It improves their physical capacity by increasing their strength, balance, flexibility and mobility. Throughout the year, Live 2 B Healthy conducts testing that solidifies these studies. Exercise is also known to enhance emotional capacity; it improves mood, decreases anxiety and depression, and improves cognitive function. Seniors who are active in exercise groups are challenging the stereotypes associated with elder capabilities, and are enhancing their lives in the long run. But we think the results speak for themselves After just 3 months of participation in Live 2 B Healthy s program the physical results were measured at a community in Minnesota where the average age is 95. The results showed a 253% improvement in one-leg balance, a 36% increase in upper body strength, a 35% increase in lower body strength and a 23% cardiovascular improvement. u u
