2 WELCOME Welcome to the Boys Brigade Canoe Club training course. This course is run by experienced staff and personally tailored to your needs. We will endeavour to develop your personal paddling skills and give you an understanding of both the place of canoeing within the Boys Brigade and the British Canoe Union. If there is anything you specifically wish to cover please speak to the staff, we are a friendly lot!! WHO IS GOING? 3 ACCOMMODATION Craggan Outdoor Centre, Ardeonaig, Killin, FK21 8SU Craggan is situated on the south bank of Loch Tay in the beautiful countryside of Perthshire. It is located on the single track road between Killin and Kenmore, adjacent to the hamlet of Ardeonaig, approximately 7 miles east of Killin. Craggan stands in an area steeped in history with ruins of castles, set in the ever changing scenery of Perthshire. The site Craggan sits on extends from the road way to the loch side commanding magnificent views on the three landward sides with a similar view to Loch Tay and the majestic Ben Lawers (1214 metres). 4 MEDICATIONS If your child takes medication, this should be noted on the Special Activity Consent Form and handed to the David Scott (Course Co-ordinator) before they board the minibus. Note: Please make sure that your child s name and dosage is clearly written on the medication package. SPENDING MONEY There won t be a tuck shop on the training weekend and we don t intend to go shopping, therefore we recommend that your child brings no more than 5. Your child is responsible for looking after their own money during the weekend, unless in the care of the Course Co-ordinator. Areas that may be covered include: group control, rescue techniques, basic paddling technique, more advanced paddling techniques, experience in different types of craft, instructional techniques. Evening sessions will cover additional topics and will be tailored to your individual needs. Areas that may be covered include: journey; resuscitation practice; BB rules and regulations; risk assessments; paddle sport theory; first aid. Note: The programme is subject to change during the weekend for various reasons.

6 WHAT TO BRING Suggested kit list for young people taking part in kayaking and canoeing sessions: o Hat (you loose a third of your body heat through your head) o T shirt (2 or 3 layers keep you warmer than 1 thick one) o Jumper / sweatshirt / fleece o Swimming kit o Shorts / tracksuit bottoms / jogging bottoms (not jeans) o Cagoule / windproof jacket / waterproof jacket (keeps the wind off you) o Old trainers / plimsolls / beach shoes o Flask (a warm drink is good after a cold swim) and for leaders: In water proof bags: o Group size first aid kit o Spare clothes fleece, trousers (to fit all) o Spare cag o Spare Warm hat o Neoprene mittens o Repair kit duct tape, plastic sheet, neoprene glue, screw driver o Bivvy bag o Bottle of water o Consent forms o Mobile phone (in water proof bag) o Throw line o Crib cards o Camera o Torch o Whistle o Towing equipment o Knife o Large flask of hot water plus tea/ blackcurrant o Emergency rations - Energy drink, chocolate, hot drink, etc. o Spare spay deck o Sun screen o Anti-bacteria hand wash o Water bombs, balls, pegs etc. o Spare paddle Please pack the following into your bag: o Sleeping bag and pillow case o T-shirts (if possible, light and quick drying t-shirts) o Shorts o Tracksuit/jogging bottoms (no jeans) o Underwear and socks o Jumpers/sweatshirts/fleeces o Trainers/study shoes/walking boots o Old trainers (for canoeing/kayaking) o Pyjamas o Swimming kit o Windproof / Waterproof jacket o Windproof / Waterproof trousers

7 o Hat and gloves o Small rucksack / day sac o Something to use as a blindfold e.g. scarf o Wash kit (including soap, facecloth, shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, coach/brush) o Hand and bath towels o Spending money 5 maximum o Medication if required e.g. Asthma inhalers, EpiPen, etc. o Special Activity Consent Form Note: As there is not a lot of room in the minibus, please pack a small bag/rucksack/suitcase. No uniform is required. EQUIPMENT CHECK Helmet: No cracks, strap ok. Snug fit, secure strap. Buoyancy aid: All fastenings ok, no tears, still up to required buoyancy. Snug fit, done up securely. Cag: No tears. Spray deck: Release tag ok. Tag on outside! Paddle: Good condition. End loops Secure, Foot rest Secure, adjusted to fit Seat Backrest adjustable Cockpit Smooth, Keyhole? 8 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Safety Requirements regarding kayaking come under the guiding principle laid down in the BB Safety handbook, namely that the Captain has to be satisfied that the person in charge is "competent." The canoe club have given this some thought over the years and we recommend the following as a competent standard for taking young people out on canals etc.: that the minimum the person in charge should hold is the BCU 2 star, a first aid certificate and be trained in rescue techniques. (This is the equivalent to the old BCU level 1 coach / supervisor award and a follows similar pattern to that run by the Scouts, LEAs and AALA in house training). 9 Risk Assessment This is an example of a risk assessment for you to use as a start for your own Don t forget Dynamic Risk assessment! Please remember to regularly review your written assessments and amend as required.

10 IMPORTANT NOTES 1. Your Special Activity Consent Form should be returned to David Scott (Course Coordinator) before you board the minibus. 2. It is a legal requirement, and a condition of hire, that seatbelts are worn by ALL passengers while you are travelling in a minibus. Failure to comply with this rule may result in being refused to be carried in the minibus on this and future journeys. 3. We recommend that any drinks that you bring onto the minibus are contained in resealable bottles. It is recommended that no fizzy drinks are consumed on board the minibus. 4. We strongly recommend that you don t bring any valuables with you on the weekend, for example: phones, ipods, cameras, etc. as they can be easily lost or damaged, and can lead to disputes in dormitories. Bring any valuables at your own risk. Your Company, the Battalion and Canoe Club will not accept any responsibility for the loss of or damage to any personal property during the training weekend (including money, unless in the care of the Course Coordinator). 5. There are private houses nearby and you should ensure that you do not disturb the residents. Noise will carry long distances, especially at night. If you want to talk all night, that is your choice, as long you chat quietly, are not disturbing the others who are sleeping, and are able to get up when woken up in the morning. 6. Remember that you should at all times ensure that your conduct and appearance at all times does credit to yourself, your Company and The Boys Brigade. 7. Craggan is an area of outstanding beauty so please keep it that way. Any rubbish must be kept by you until you can put it in the bin. 8. If you feel uncomfortable with anything or anyone during the weekend, please speak to David Scott (Course Co-ordinator) in confidence. 9. Please report all damages, accidental or otherwise, immediately to any member of Coaching Staff. 10. Bring a smile don t pack it but wear it and bring a sense of humour!
