DANIEL CUNNINGHAM GARY MATTHEWS ANDREW WING GORDON DICKSON TOM FAULKNER ALAN MCDOUGALL PETER MORGAN PRESIDENTS REPORT As a club that has a history of 58 years of patrolling the beach and providing service to the community we are very fortunate to have such a long and proud heritage. The season of 2015/16 is such a small part of that heritage but it is the basic principles that have been adopted over those 58 years of putting the community first and maintaining our values as a friendly family club which makes the past season one that all members should be proud to have been a part of. This annual report provides the opportunity for us to review the achievements and contributions that have been made by our members over the last season. Patrols Our core activity of patrolling the beach was once again put to the test during the season when good weather brought many visitors to our beach. On many of the hottest days we also experienced challenging surf conditions which kept our patrols very busy. On behalf of all members I would like to thank our patrols for their dedication and vigilance as their efforts have maintained our proud record of 58 seasons of no lives lost whilst we have been patrolling the beach. Our Director of Life Saving Jessica Thomas has spent many hours supporting the patrols and has done a great job in ensuring our rescue services operated efficiently. We were also very fortunate to have had continuity with most of our patrol captains from last season and their experienced leadership has assisted in maintaining our patrols to a high standard. Education & Training In order to have strong patrols it is essential that we have well trained lifesavers. Our education team headed up by our Chief Instructor Bob Powell has once again done an outstanding job in training members for their SRC, Bronze Medallion and higher awards. Apart from the countless hours spent by our team of instructors on these awards they also run member proficiency tests, undergo their own 4 P a g e

ongoing training and carry out assessing duties. Our club is very fortunate to have such a dedicated team and their quality of training is not only highly regarded at our club but also within Surf Lifesaving Central Coast. Well done to Bob and his team. To all our new Bronze Medallion and other award recipients congratulations and I hope that you continue to be actively involved in the club. Surf Sports The 2015/16 season has seen our competitor numbers spread over a broader range of activities with more members participating in surf sport events, the U/15-Open section and Masters Sections. Our Surf Sports Director Brett Harrod and Club Coach Trevor Gee have implemented a new competition training structure for our U/15-Open competitors. This initiative together with the training activities being done in lifesaving competition has been a very important step in transitioning our junior competitors through to the senior ranks of the club. The results achieved at the NSW State Championships and Australian Championships was a testament to the long and hard hours that Trevor and his coaches put in to training. Well done to Trevor and all those involved in running the various sections and training. Congratulations to all competitors who have represented the club through what seems to have been a long competition season, starting with the NSW Pool Rescue Event in July, Coolangatta Gold in November and culminating with the Australian Titles in April. At all carnivals and championships our competitors performed to the highest standard. Junior Activities The junior section of the club has had another big season in running Sunday morning Nipper activities and other events. This is not a simple task as we had some 400 Nipper members. Harold Marshall as Junior Activities Chairman and age managers did a great job in implementing change to ensure that Sunday morning activities ran to program and all those involved had a fun time. Finance The financial management of our club has been under- taken by Club Treasurer Tim Leggett. During the season Tim has implemented a new accounting system to assist with reporting and budgeting which has provided greater transparency to the committee about the club s financial performance. Thanks Tim for all the hours you put into processing and managing our financial information and reporting. It was pleasing to see the club has continued to return a profit and that we are in a sound financial position. Sponsorship The ability of our club to maintain services on the beach is dependent upon the generous support from our club sponsors. We have once again been very fortunate with Club Umina, Merrylands RSL Club, Ettalong Diggers and Fortunity, have continued as major sponsors of the club. We would also like to thank Homebrook Pty Ltd, Campbell s Home Hardware, Morning Star Lodge Freemasons, Louvre land Blinds and Shutters and Bendigo Bank Ettalong for their significant sponsorships along with all other club sponsors who are detailed in the financial and sponsorship sections of this report. The responsibility of sourcing and managing our sponsors was undertaken by Bill and Wendy Cook who has done a great job in continuing to build relationships with our sponsors and looked at many new sponsorship alternatives. Other Club Events and Activities Club members once again assisted in the organization and running of numerous club events and activities including the following: 5 P a g e

The East Coast Surf Festival was a major event for the club and was well supported. Thanks go to John Sharpe, Harold Marshall, Peter Saxby, Robert Macleod, Steve Murphy and their work parties for the efforts in ensuring this event was a great success. Surf Camp was held in January with 100 nippers in attendance fine tuning their skills under the close eye of our club coaches. This camp has become an important part of the junior development as the results in all carnivals shows the benefits. Rotary Youth Exchange was held for the four year with youth from around the world attending our beach, this program allows our youth to interact with different nationalities and cultures that our young people can use later in life. I would like to thank Jessica Thomas and all our young people that attended and made this event so special for our visitors. NSW State Championships was held in March this was a fantastic spectacular seeing the best competitors the state has to offer. This was the most proud moment of the year for myself seeing the club pull together from nipper s right through to our life members working side by side to put on the best event in the state. Thanks go to the Local Organizing Committee Brett Harrod, Robert Langford, Daniel Cunningham, Garry Mensforth, John Sharpe, David Thompson, Elaine Unger, Belinda Thompson, and Mark Arahill. I would also extend my gratitude to the community based groups Gosford City Council Craig Healy from Gosford City Council Lifeguards and Woy Woy Rotary, Billy Ide and The Men s shed. The biggest thank you of all goes to all the volunteers from our club. On concluding I would like to congratulate Stuart Harvey on the work he has done this season as President of the Surf Lifesaving Central Coast and I would also like to thank him, the Branch Executive and Chris Parker and his staff for the support they have provided to our club. It is also important to recognise the contribution of Gosford City Council in assisting the club with events and facility maintenance. Our close relationship with the Council continues thanks to the efforts of the General Manager Paul Anderson, Mayor Laurie McKinna and his staff. To my wife Megan thank you very much for your involvement, your understanding, patience and support over the last twelve months. As we look forward I can assure you there are many plans and many ideas on the future direction of our club to ensure we remain relevant, that our beach environment is protected and our clubhouse benefits both members and the local community. To all members thank you for your support over the season of 2015/16. Yours in Surf Lifesaving Paul Sharpe VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT It is with great pleasure that I submit my report for the season. What an amazing season, with so many highlights. Gateway was introduced to make payments an easier system, our fourth and (final?) year for the present time holding the NSW State Titles. The culmination in the strategic planning and coaching saw very successful results at Branch, State and Aussie Titles along with other out of area carnivals, a successful season like we have never seen before. As I said at the junior presentation everyone At Umina has a part to play and we are all a piece in the big jigsaw puzzle. We are seeing long standing members, still with positions in the club and we are seeing new members taking on positions, this is how we grow. Using the wisdom and experience can only see us grow in leaps and bounds. 6 P a g e

To the Executive and Management Committee, this year my thanks and appreciation for all you have done, to Christine who again has stepped in and made life a little easier, as we have run one down this year, my thanks and gratitude. To all the members whether you compete, patrol, participate in nippers do some admin work along the way or just help out in a small way, THANKYOU. The season ended on a high with the Branch Awards of excellence. The club came second, Kai Darwin took out Volunteer of the Year, Jemma Smith took out Young Athlete of the year and Open athlete of the year, the Under 17 girls team, Jemma, Mollie, Jasmine, Jazmyn, Mimi, Sydney and Rachel won this award, and the club came 3rd overall in the competition point score. Well done Umina! We now wait in anticipation to see how we may succeed at the NSW Awards. To Phil my thanks for your support this year. Again to everyone thank you for your contribution however small or big it was, it all goes to help make our club a friendly, family orientated and progressive club on the coast. Jan Harding Vice President DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING REPORT Wow, this 2015/16 season has come to an end and hasn t it been great! This season was my first time as Club Captain. Stepping up this year was made so easy because of the support of the amazing executive committee. The work that they do to keep our club running is beyond what anyone thinks and they should definitely be congratulated. A massive thanks should also go out to Nick Shepard and Rob McLeod who have mentored me over the past couple of years and assisted me in any way possible this season. I would like to thank every single patrolling member for helping keep our beach safe this season. Once again this season we upheld our tradition of no lives lost on our beaches. Here are some statistics that show the high standards of lifesaving at Umina. These statistics are put into surf guard every week from the patrol log book that we should be completing every patrol. 200,000+ visitors to or beach 58 rescues 110 total first aids 14 lost children 3719 preventions Our patrol captains have done a fantastic job once again showing professionalism and also a quick response to any incidences that have occurred. They have welcomed all new bronze holders onto their patrols. This year we also introduced a new requal system. This meant it was up to patrol captains to update their members qualifications, taking the strain off our clubs trainers and assessors. It put a little more pressure on them over their first few patrols but they all managed to complete this on time and made my job a lot easier. As technology is improving, Surf Lifesaving is also coming up with ways to make our lives lot easier on the beach and ultimately preventing us from spending unnecessary time speaking to surfcom, which has been an issue in the past. An initiative that has been introduced this season is the new Patrol App. This App can be downloaded on a phone or tablet and is used the same way that the patrol logs have been used they can sign you and your patrol on, can record rescues and pinpoint the exact location of flags with only a touch of a couple of buttons. Hopefully by next season all patrol captains will be able to use this App. 7 P a g e

The high standard of bronze holders is thanks to our amazing trainers and assessors. Thanks to Pam and Jarryd for training the SRC s and preparing them for their final exam, the kids all passed with flying colours and we can t wait for them to return to their patrols next season. A massive thank you should definitely go to Bob Powell and his team of trainers. The bronze holders they have trained this season have all been knowledgeable, enthusiastic and ready to learn even more on their patrols. A congratulations should go out to Duncan Way our 2015/16 patrol person of the year. Duncan has been patrolling for 5 years and is Vice-Captain of patrol 9, this year completing an outstanding 70 patrolling hours. He has shown a large amount of commitment and we look forward to his ongoing contribution. The patrol of the year went to Patrol 1! This patrol, like Duncan has shown commitment and professionalism through every aspect of patrolling duties. Well done and keep up the great work! Lastly I would like to thank my dad, Steve Thomas. He has been a big help stepping up as Vice Club Captain this year he has put in so much this season. I m sure I am not the only one who appreciates his efforts. 11 DIRECTOR OF FINANCE REPORT This year in the financial area we have focused on simplifying and streamlining our processes and administration, at the same time reducing costs wherever possible in order to give back more to the members and the community. We moved to an online accounting system, twice, after initially going with one solution, the new auditors wanted to eventually move to Xero. Fortunity (Our auditors and financial advisers) have been really helpful and supportive, we wanted to make it easy for them, so three months in we switched and it has been a really good move as we are now almost completely paperless. It has made the accounts much easier to process and also enables more people to get involved and help out. Larissa Dixon, Jane Ritson and Julie Fayers have all been a tremendous help with the accounts. Julie Blair has also been able to manage the merchandise section with much more ease. It is important that we are able to spread the load of some of the more involved positions within the club. The new constitution will go a long way towards this goal as well. We also moved to online payments through the Gateway, another improvement which has made payments to the club a lot easier. Jan Harding has been very helpful and supporting especially with the payment of carnival entrees. Again with help here from Julie Blair, Jane and Larissa we have streamlined and simplified the management of finances within the club. We processed nearly 8000 payments and receipts throughout the year, no small task. All of this has also meant that we are able to control the finances in a more transparent way, enabling any member to see the accounts anytime and anywhere. We turned a modest profit this year, in the coming year the club is going to need to manage the finances even more closely with the loss of the State Carnival (Approx. $45,000) and an expected increase in expenses we will simply have less funds to support our activities. We have a very healthy Balance Sheet all the same and this will hold us in good stead with continued support from our sponsors and income producing activities such as club functions and hall hire, thanks to Fiona Lloyd who has done a great job in this area. I wish to thank the board and the members for their support in what has been a tough year for me personally. A change in jobs, an increase in travel to Sydney and a hefty increase in workload has meant I have had less time to devote to the club. I wish the Directors well in the coming season and I will see you on the beach. Tim Leggett 10 P a g e

CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER REPORT Firstly I would like to thank Andy Wing for his huge contribution to training and assessment and his friendship over the last decade and beyond. Andy s knowledge and expertise in all things relating to the IRB s and mechanised fleet was second to none. At the start of this season SLSA introduced a new flexible process for proficiencies which is now administered by the club executive. Our Assessors still assist the process and conduct proficiencies for the high end awards, base award proficiencies are now conducted by Patrol Captains and the Water Safety Supervisor. Thanks to all our Assessors for assisting with this process. Lyndi Leggett and Steve Reid joined the education team this season and are doing great jobs in Bronze and IRB training respectively. Lyndi holds a Cert IV in Training and Assessment and Steve is upgrading previously held Trainer and Assessor qualifications to the current requirements. Vicki Swain has again been a key trainer with the Bronze groups and although she has been training and assessing for many years her qualifications were never formalised at her previous club. This year Vicki has been doing a lot of extra work as we correct this, and by the end of this season Vicki will hold her Trainer qualifications for SRC, Bronze and Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and Assessor qualifications for SRC/Bronze. Natasha Swain has been working with the Bronze groups and attended the Assessor course at the start of the season. Natasha now holds her SRC, Bronze and ART Trainer qualifications and Assessor for SRC/Bronze. Apart from Vicki, Natasha and Lyndi mentioned above, experienced T/A s Kevin Armstrong and Steve Dixon did great work (as always) with our Bronze groups. This year we had about 35 members complete their Bronze Medallion award, additionally we had four members who joined from other clubs or re-joined after a number of years absence. All completed in-depth bronze upgrades and gained their ART award and have now joined patrols. Three of these members hold IRB qualifications amongst other awards. Thanks to Pam Edmonds for her ongoing work with the SRC award. Pam has been running the SRC training for many years and her experience and flexibility always ensures a quality, timely outcome. Thanks also to Jarryd Edmonds for assisting with assessment of these groups. Peter Saxby and Steve Reid looked after the IRB training and have introduced a more flexible process to encourage more members to gain IRB awards, however many who started the process did not continue, and have yet to finalise their award. We will review and tweak the process for next season. Thanks also to the club executive, Jane Ritson, Larissa Dixon and Christine Lavers for assistance administering both club and branch courses and to the water safety team members who provided support during water based training sessions. In particular, Stu Graff, Mark Iveli, Darren Sloane who provided water safety and encouragement to the Bronze participants. And finally to all our members for taking the time to attend courses and obtain new qualifications and awards. The amount of SLSA qualifications and awards held and maintained by all our members is extremely high and allows our club to easily exceed our service obligation. Thank you again to all our Trainers and Assessors, It is a pleasure to work with all of you and look forward to doing so again next season in whatever capacity. 15 MOTORISED EQUIPMENT REPORT Last season was busy with many rescues, which saw our members attending callouts from the sand flats near the rip bridge for groundings to Patonga for lost paddlers. I would like to commend all our patrols for the general maintenance and reporting of damage as this allows me to keep on top of any issues. Training: Training for Crewman and drivers was held with good numbers signing up, 2 drivers and 3 crew have passed, I would encourage those still enrolled to try to find the time amongst busy family schedules to finish the courses. New courses will be announced soon and will be condensed to run over 4 weekends so as to minimize the duration. Servicing: IRB motors have had numbers placed on the leg to aid in identification, the water pumps have been replaced as well as other minor servicing done by James Irwin And myself. This has saved the club servicing fees and allowed us the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the motors. Heavy stainless steel pins have been used to secure propellers following an incident where a prop was lost, post incident assessment failed to find the cause, so I ask that all drivers and crew be vigilant when signing off the IRB log books at the beginning of each Patrol, to look for any damage or missing parts. If anything is missing or damaged please remove the item from service, attach a service tag fill in the book and send me a text. The IRB s also have had minor repairs to the pontoons and the hulls polished to aid in launching and retrieval. As a reminder to all operator, the tilt and gear lock were removed as to allow quick start in the surf zone (as per SLSA directive) please be careful when dry starting on the beach and around public. The tractor also received some much needed love, the fuel lines have been replaced so hopefully no more diesel bleeding on the beach, if anyone is gifted and can help welding, please contact me. A few minor things can be repaired to bring the tractor back to full operation. IRB Racing: James, Steven and Jess have commenced training with Ocean Beach Surf Club, and permission sought for the funding from the Exec to beef up our motor to meet specs for racing. Anyone interested in joining this group please contact James Irwin. IRB Captain Stephen Reid 14 P a g e

MASTERS REPORT It was a quiet start for the season this year as far as competition was concerned but in saying that we still had strong numbers turning up for training which was great to see. Not sure how many years I have been doing this job role but it was really good to see so many Masters turning up for training and ready to compete for our club. A big pat on the back to everyone who put in the extra effort to go above their comfort zone and as a result we had some great personal bests. We started off with the Forster long weekend which was the first hit out and we had good number competing on both days. Central Coast Branch was the next big hit out but our numbers were down this year due to other commitments, in saying that we still finished a very respectable 3 rd overall. State as we all know this year was at our home beach of Umina and we had a strong force in numbers. Most Masters turned up for work party duties and then competed; we placed 9th overall and 2 nd out of the Central Coast clubs. I look forward to competing at another beach again next season with a great group of people. The away trips always have some good stories to tell and NO Work party required! Aussies this year was up on the Sunshine Coast and again we had good numbers. I was unable to attend due to work commitments but from what I heard everyone had a good time. I would like to congratulate all Masters that competed this year and represented our club. Your all know this is a great way to stay fit and improve your skills as a lifesaver. I look forward to another fantastic season next year. I would like to thank all that helped out in any way especially Christine Bishop, Phil and Jan Harding who every year help with our State entries they are very patient, and last but not least Christine Lavers the go to lady for information. We will be having a fairly big off season this year as we are aiming putting teams in again to the Coolangatta Gold. See ya on the beach Cheers. 20 UMINA SURFBOATS This season saw the resurgence of our Umina surf boat crews. The Ladies Boat Crew named Umina Stingers was swept by Grant Stringer and had some fantastic results in the Streets Surf Boat Series. The Crew was: Ashlee Dean, Megan Langford, Lauren Swain, and Lara Reineker. The ladies crew placed 2nd overall in the Streets Boat Series and had some great placing s during the season and then travelled up north to QLD to compete in the Aussies. Also towards the second half of the season we had a men s crew evolve and they were: Stuart Graf, Tim Leggett, Adrian Stimson and Phil Callewaert. After a late start to the season the men s first competitive race was at the finals of the Streets series Terrigal and they did their coach proud. Unfortunately a couple of them ended up in the Terrigal first aid room with some physical injuries but they are keen again to recommence their training during the off season in preparation for A HUGE Thank you to Grant Stringer who has volunteered his time and skills in getting the surf boat area back into competition. Umina does need to have more sweeps as we have many members wanting to be a part of this sport. Also to mention a thank you to Tony Munce from Topaz Dynamics who has come on board as a new sponsor for the surf boats. 19 P a g e

ANNUAL LADIES NIGHT Our 2015 Annual Ladies night once again was a huge success; this year we raised money for Coast Shelter who help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness on the Central Coast. We again enjoyed a fantastic night and raised just over $870 for this cause. With big thanks to Nicole McLeod, Skye Marshall and all the people that help organize this fantastic night. SURF LIFESAVING CENTRAL COAST- AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE At the Central Coast Branch Awards which were held on 11th June Umina SLSC members had some outstanding results. U17 Female Surf & Pool Team took out the Team of the Year Mollie Murphy, Jemma Smith, Jasmine Darwin, Sydney Healey Rachel Wood, Mimi Henderson & Jazmyn Rodwell U19 and Open Competitor Jemma Smith Volunteer of the Year Kai Darwin Umina SLSC placed 2nd overall for the Club of the Year The above all now progress onto the Surf Life Saving NSW Awards of Excellence which will be held in August, P a g e

UNIFORM For the final year state titles were held at our home beach, I was extremely proud to see our nippers, seniors and masters wear our Umina club costumes with pride. It was also great to see the team spirit amongst our senior competitors who wore their team shirt with dignity. A huge thanks to Brett Harrod who organised the shirts and full sponsorship. Total sales through the uniform shop this season was more than 900 items which equates to nearly $14,000 in sales during the season. Our best seller was the club skull cap. We sold 130 units. On just this item we made $650 profit to return to the club. Our other big sellers were boys Jammers. Thanks to Waratah Sports for their sponsorship with our state tops also all our members helping with fundraising which enabled all our state competitors to receive a state top. I would like to thank all the helping hands who have come along when the uniform line was going out the door. Julie Blair Uniform Office DUKE OF EDINBURGH Wow, What a season. It all started back in October, Mimi Henderson, Jasmine Darwin, James Bishop, Harry Whitney & Michael Paterson completed their BRONZE Award with two days of orienteering in the rugged Blue Mountains. With only a compass & a map they had to locate & record a number of checkpoints hidden in the vast Lithgow Valley. Trudging up & down numerous hills over a 24 hour period. They found enough points to place them first in their category. Thanks to Vanessa Henderson & Robyn Patterson for supervising them. Then in January, the fun started. Two young ladies, Mollie Murphy & Savannah Patterson did what a lot of people thought was too arduous to complete. They first had to do 4 days of practice in the most atrocious conditions seen on the coast for some time. Driving rain, strong winds & 3-4 metre swell. All their training up till then hadn t prepared them for this. To their credit, they got into the water & ploughed through the elements. After all, it couldn t get any worse. If they could do this, they could handle anything. A huge thanks goes out to Steve Reid & Kai Darwin who accompanied them daily in poor weather, so as to keep them safe. The following week s weather was the complete opposite. They paddled the 4 days (55km) from the Lakes to Umina in sunshine, NE breeze & small swells. Although tired at the finish, the girls were very proud of their achievement as this was the final task in a 12 month adventure which sees them qualify for their GOLD Award. A big thank you to all who helped out with water safety & logistics, especially Peter Dell who took the week off work so that he could supply a Jet Ski backup to the girls. To finish off the season another group, Hannah Murphy, Bronte Smith, Cooper Jack, Sam Gaffney & Darcy Coleman completed their BRONZE Award this month. Their trip was a 2 day walk form Ettalong to McMaster s via the coastal track in Bouddi National Park. This is a friendly young group. We have high hopes that they will stay together over the various awards to be the first whole group to get to Gold. This is due to the huge amount of work that their manager Lisa Jack does in the background, keeping them grounded & on the ball. Many thanks to all at the club - Ashlee Dean & Tom Magurren. 21 P a g e

BOARD CAPTAIN Taking this role for the first time I am grateful to Katherine Miller for her help and comprehensive paper work making the transition very easy and smooth. I would also thank all members who helped during the year and for the timely notification of any damage to the boards. This allows them to be repaired and returned to service much quicker. Through the board sponsorship program 3 mals and 2 nipper boards will be returned for club use next season. Due to the continued support of our sponsors, athletes were able to purchase 4 mals and 1 nipper board which will be returned to the club in three seasons. This program has allowed the stock of club boards to be renewed regularly and the sale of some of our older boards. A new fibreglass nipper board was also won this year by the kids competing at the Kracka Board Carnival and will be ready for use next season. Thanks also to John Rutherford for taking the nipper trailer to carnivals with the foam boards for the kids. Last thanks but not least Karen my long suffering wife who dropped off and picked up repaired boards before and after work. Thanks. See you next season. Steve Murphy ROOKIE REPORT All members of Umina Surf Club should be very proud of the efforts of the rookies. This group of young adults averaged over 30 patrol hours and raised over $1,200 for the Umina SLSC. Our under 14s and under 13s attended all rookie events with enthusiasm. At all events Umina had the most rookies in attendance. For the second year the rookies took it upon themselves to organize a pancake and cake stall on registration day at Umina SLSC. It was a great success raising over $300. The first official rookie event of the season was the raising of the flags at Soldiers Beach in September. Next was the rookie disco on Halloween. Most of our rookies joined with rookies from all clubs on the Central Coast for the fancy dress event. Zac Wilson as a dead ringer for Predator taking the best dressed prize. In November, 8 of our rookies joined 50 rookies from other clubs at the youth development camp at Broken Bay sport and rec. It is a great opportunity to work in teams and get to know other kids that they normally compete against at carnivals. In January, 6 of our rookies represented the Club at the Rookie Challenge at Terrigal. This mini carnival is not about the best board and swimming competitors. It is about traditional lifesaving events. Our rookies did an outstanding job winning an ipad for the club. The last official rookie event was Ducks for Bucks. This is the largest fund raising event run by Central Coast Surf Life Saving. Again Umina had the most rookies turn up and impressed everyone with the friendly way they approached people asking to buy tickets. 22 P a g e

It has been a pleasure to be the rookie coordinator this season and I look forward to watching this year s rookies continue to develop and contribute to surf lifesaving. Peter Rookie Co-ordinator JAC REPORT Is there anything more rewarding than seeing a child accomplish something that they never thought was possible? The jubilation, the tears, the persistence, the angst, the shock, the fears, the trust, happiness and the personal drive all of these emotions plus so much more is what the amazing Nippers of Umina Surf Lifesaving Club have endured, felt and conquered this season. These moments drive us as Age Manager s, Age Secretary s, Water Safety and Coaches and what bring us to the beach each and every week. To all of our Age Managers, Age Secretary s, Coaches, Water Safety, Officials and Parents thanks for all of your efforts to support the Surf Club. Our Nipper base is huge and ever growing and this is a direct reflection of the nurturing, safe and fun environment that our volunteer Leadership teams provide each and every Sunday as well as the extra training sessions Tuesday through Friday. Special thanks go to the Junior Club Captains Lachlan McLeod and Grace Talty for being great role models and ambassadors for our Nippers and club. Again our season was jam packed with events, we saw our Nippers compete and excel in the Newcastle Permanent Iron person Series, Kracka Iron person, and many ocean swim competitions, Freshwater / Manly Nipper Nats and Wave Warrior. The Australia Day long weekend saw the annual Umina Surf Camp and once again the efforts of Nicky and Robbie McLeod to get this awesome event ready. Without your hard work there is no Surf Camp. The 2 days of training with specialist coaches, games, fun and the sleep over at the surf club always ensures this is one of the highlights of the Nippers season. Lastly farewell to the Under 14 s lead by Katherine Miller and Ricky Braddish, thank you for everything you have done for the Surf Club over the past 9 seasons. We hope to still see you on the beach next season. We hope that we will see you and your young lifesavers on our beautiful Umina Beach. To say that I am proud of what we as a Club have achieved is an understatement. Competing, or just for fun, whatever, simply ENJOY and try YOUR BEST. Rafael Nadal Thanks again for another fantastic season, Harold 23 P a g e

UNDER 14 s As these young adults come to the end of their nipper career it feels both exciting and sad at the same time. Exciting because of the new challenges ahead with many of the U14 s spreading their wings and following the many paths Surf Life Saving has to offer. Sad because it is an end of an era where we have seen a lot of personal growth and athletic development as well as many lifelong friendships created. Starting the U14 s is always exciting with the beginning of paddling the MALs. Like most things this young group does, they practiced, practiced, trained and practiced some more. Their skills in such a short time are fantastic! A big congratulation to the group for successfully completing their Surf Rescue Certificates (SRC). The new skills they have acquired have been used on patrol with many of the U14 s sharing numerous stories about their patrol experiences. Some have told stories of finding lost children along the beach, undertaking preventative measures to safely get swimmers out of rips and being involved in rescues to name a few. We have no doubt you will all make fantastic Surf Life Savers in the very near future, performing such a wonderful community service! As Rookies they represented the club with pride whenever they were asked to, from raising of the flags, ducks for bucks, Rookie challenges, discos and many, many more. Our club Captains for the season Grace Talty & Lachlan McLeod did an amazing job this year. They were always willing to help and contribute to the club and represent the club to a very high standard. They were both our representatives at branch for Junior Lifesaver. As an age group we have been extremely successful in all areas of competition. We had U14 s compete in First Aid, Champion Life Saver, Branch carnivals, out of branch carnivals, State carnivals and Australian carnivals. It would be difficult to list all the achievements from this age group. I will, however, list the State and Australian medalists/achievements - Australian Medalists in Pool Rescue - Lachlan Braddish, Lachlan McLeod, Kirsten Miller, Lily Perry, Madison Scahill, Leilani Healy and Kaylah Holmes. State & Australian records holders in Pool Rescue Lachlan Braddish & Kaylah Holmes. Australian top 6 in surf Lachlan McLeod State Medalists in Pool Rescue - Lachlan Braddish, Lachlan McLeod, Charlie Polson, Kai Darwin, Leilani Healy, Lily Perry, Grace Talty and Kaylah Holmes. State Medalists in the Surf - Lachlan Braddish, Charlie Polson, Lachlan McLeod, Kai Darwin and Kirsten Miller Further congratulations to Lachlan Braddish and Kirsten Miller who were selected for the Central Coast Inter branch Team. A big thank you to all the people that give up their time to help this age group as well as the club committee members, club volunteers, water safety, officials, trainers and anyone who helped out throughout the year. Also thank you to Kimberly who was the age manager from U6 s and Bill & Wendy who have helped this group throughout their nipper journey thank you! The U14 s has grown and matured into young adults and we are extremely proud of the way they have represented the club in the many different avenues they have done so. We look forward to seeing them within the club as they continue their involvement in Umina SLSC. Katherine Miller and Richard Braddish 28 P a g e

UNDER 1 3 S What a great season we have had! We increased our numbers this season and it was wonderful to see so many faces return and new ones alike. The one thing that I truly appreciate with this incredible group of individuals is that they are inclusive of old and new Nippers, forming one big team! We have had some wonderful achievements this season which includes State medals at the NSW Pool Rescue Championship late last July which set the tone for our greatest and toughest seasons. We had record numbers compete in all of our local carnivals and again at the final State Titles held at Umina. Our girls had set some personal goals and achieved then exceeded what they had originally planned. The boys, who love nothing more than catching waves and playing around in the surf, found that they were quite swift when it comes to the sand. Many Saturday afternoon sessions throughout the summer they worked in their sprint techniques and relay changes. They rapidly formed a special bond on the sand and these brothers won many local carnival relay events then topped it off with a Top 6 at State!! Great work boys. Lastly as the season closed and everyone had left the beach, the under 13 s had just started their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). The official Life Saving journey to gain their Bronze Medallion had begun. Thanks again to the wonderful Mollie for again being the outstanding role model and mentor you are to these amazing young Nippers. Looking forward to seeing you all for our final EVER nipper season. Skye Marshall. UNDER 12 S So the season has come to an end, and I have no hesitation to say it was a successful and enjoyable one. I knew this would be the case from the time Harold asked me to step up into the role halfway through last year. Everyone that I was involved with this year had a positive attitude and was supportive of me and most importantly the kids. I wouldn t necessarily call it a small group, with 26 registered and a regular attendance at nippers of more than 20 for most of the Sundays, so it was challenging at times for me so I was grateful to have so much help. At the beginning it wasn t easy as I was fitting into the role for the first time, but I have to give credit to kids who eventually reacted positively to the fact that I had never been an age manager before, and being 19, it was admirable to see the respect I received from them. One thing that didn t change was the enthusiasm, and it didn t need to change as it was at a great level throughout the season. All the kids wanted to be on the beach and were willing to participate. This enthusiasm was carried into carnivals as well, shown through some great results of which the kids should be proud. There were a lot of medals at the branch level throughout the year, both team and individual, in what I would consider a very competitive age group. I was proud of the attempt at the state championships too, with a few finalists, who were very unlucky not to receive medals. In any case, to make the final at state is still a big achievement. 29 P a g e

A lot of the results come back to the dedication of the kids and also the dedication of the coaches during the week, at nippers, and at carnivals. So much improvement occurred as the kids were willing to learn from the immense knowledge and experience of the coaches. It was great to watch and a great resource for the kids. There was so much support out there throughout the season for which I am incredibly grateful. The under 12 parents, for being such an amazing group of people, making sure I was always controlling the kids and helping me when needed, all the water safety and officials who gave up their time to protect the kids in the surf, everyone running the carnival, putting up the tents early in the morning and putting them back after everyone had left, Harold, for supporting me throughout the season and being someone I could rely on, all of the coaches, and also the support of Savannah with the difficult job of secretary, getting some organisation which I am not the best at, and Oliver and Adam for being of great assistance in organising the age group at nippers and carnivals. Without all this support and so much more behind the scenes, this club wouldn t function and the kids wouldn t be able to have the fun that they have had. Hence I cannot thank enough the efforts of everyone involved in the club, making it as great as it is. So as this season has drawn to a close, I want to congratulate all the efforts of the under 12s, I am incredibly proud of them. They are all amazing human beings and I can see them all being successful should they continue to be involved in the surf club, they all have amazing ability in different areas and it would be wonderful to see them nurture these abilities. So I hope to see as many of you as possible back on the beach for the season. Many thanks, Jack UNDER 11 S was a fabulous season with 37 children involved in U/11s, 21 girls & 16 boys. Carnivals: Again, a great contingent of competitors heading to Forster for The Weekend of Surf at Forster. Lots of fun had by all! Several competitors at various carnivals including Newcastle Permanent Series, Kracka, Wave Warriors, Catho Board Challenge, Nipper Nats. Last year of State this season at Umina/ Ocean Beach with 13 competitors. Memorable results: Newcastle Permanent Series Makenzie 3 rd and Finlay 5 Newcastle Beach, racing before some of their surf idols in the Nutrigrain Series. All other results posted on website. Simon & Sue would like to thank our wonderful U/11s for all of their hard work, dedication & determination to succeed in building their skills, individually & in teams this season. You should all be very proud & we hope to see you all back next season. We would also like to thank the endless list of volunteers who dedicate so much of their time freely to benefit the kids along their nipper s journey allowing them to safely enjoy the ocean. Many thanks to all the coaches, water safety, officials, admin personnel, club sponsors for their support, club executive & also the parents. 30 P a g e

UNDER 10 S Wow what a season! An awesome bunch of kids to hang out with every Sunday morning. It was great to see some new faces along with all our returning nippers. We have a very big age group with 30+ on the beach each week all keen to have fun. 4 local carnivals with huge numbers from the U10 s all giving it their best and having so much fun at the same time. Representing our club with pride and showing so much sportsmanship. With many great results achieved individually and as a team. Our biggest carnival - The State Title s this year produced great weather and conditions. We saw our U10 s nail it making quarter finals, semifinals and finals. For the third year in a row our Superstar Davara came away with a shiny Silver medal in the Surf Race. Well Done Davara. We are so proud of the amazing improvements seen by every single one of you, from our new U10 nippers to our seasoned nippers. Everyone successfully swimming the cans and tackling the boards and waves with confidence. Next year sees a few changes with fiberglass boards and a longer swim and exciting things like board rescue, iron person and Cameron relays. Thank you to all the U10 parents for your assistance, dedication and encouragement we look forward to seeing you all again next season. A huge thank you to all our wonderful coaches, Bill & Wendy Cook, Steve Murphy and all the water safety. We thank you for the encouragement and positive influences you bring to the kids. It is wonderful to see so many friendships being formed and so many kids always smiling. Keep up the great work See you on the beach next season Ally & Harold UNDER 9 S The Under 9 s started the year with some new challenges ahead. The first time swimming around the cans, first time competing on boards, first State carnival. The aim was to get all the kids in the group swimming around the cans independently by the end of the season. We had a few kids drop by the wayside with the challenge of the water events, but those who stayed all achieved water competency and shown a huge improvement in their surf skills by the end of the year. Our competitors were a small but determined bunch of nippers. All have shown a great commitment to the sport, training hard in the water and adding extra squad sessions at the pool to complement their surf training. The hard work they have put in gave them some amazing results. Lots of medals at local carnivals for individuals and teams, some branch champions and some great performances at their first State competition, including some top 10 finishes and State finalists. These kids have shown a massive improvement in their skills in the surf, able to tackle increasingly challenging conditions with confidence, culminating in many of them taking on some big surf at the Manly Carnival in January. 31 P a g e

A big thank you must go to the water safety who work tirelessly every Sunday to help kids improve their confidence in the water. Thank you to the JAC for making the season happen and to the coaches, assistants, carnival fairies and parents for supporting this age group throughout the year. Jenni & Diona. UNDER 8 S This is my third season with this group of kids, and what an awesome year we had! This year was also our first year of competing at carnivals! This season we continued our lifesaving skills as we had group discussions about water safety, and what we need to do when we get into trouble out in the water. The U8 s competed at 4 carnivals over the season and they got better and better at each carnival. The children showed great sportsmanship towards each other and also other competitors from other clubs at the carnivals. The Children showed great skills in their wade, flags and sprints at carnivals and also at nippers each week. The U8 s worked hard at practicing their wade relay skills, diving for flags and batten changes during sprint relays. The Children then started to learn a new skill. The board! The U8 s got to practice during nippers and at the end of the season we started board training, which was a great success and will start again towards the end of September. I have many people to thank for this season. The kids, their parents, water safety, officials, Harold (JAC) Rob McLeod (board training), Gary Wilson, Lisa and Steve Funnell, the other age managers, the executive committee and everyone who put their hand up to help at any stage this season. Without everyone s help, support and advise I wouldn t have been able to do what I did this season with the U8 s I have loved seeing the children grow in confidence each week and I have met some awesome kids and families! Can t wait to see what U9 s have install for us! Many Thanks Rachel Scott U8 s Age Manager 32 P a g e

UNDER 7 s The under 7 s had a fantastic year highlighted by the growth in confidence our Nippers showed in the water. As a group we were extremely fortunate how many of the parents were willing to hop in the water and help out regardless of the conditions. As a result the kids got to spend plenty of time practicing their skills of wading, diving under waves to get out and catching the waves back in. Most popular of all though was the time we got to spend on the mini boards, where some of the skills and confidence displayed were quite remarkable. There were plenty of games to play on the sand as well including beach flags, sprints and even the occasional visit from Captain Rob who had our nippers scrubbing the deck and climbing the ladder. The enjoyment and enthusiasm our nippers showed this year clearly stemmed from the involvement of our nipper parents and carers. I m sure a lot of our parents were encouraged to become involved through the passion and energy of our Age Secretary Viki Dickson. Viki did an amazing job ensuring all the kids were all participating, learning and most importantly having fun. Finally I would like to congratulate all of our U 7 s on the way they conducted themselves at each and every session throughout the year. We have a wonderful group of young boys and girls who I hope will continue to represent the Umina SLSC for years to come. Stephen Scahill UNDER 6 S The season saw another large group of U6 nippers join us on the beach. During the season they learned and practiced lots of different skills to help them stay safe on the beach. This involved lots of fun games and activities, one of them this season was the use of our foam nipper boards. Most of the U6 s were willing to have a turn; even if they came off they got straight back on and tried again. Some future medalists in the making!! I would like to thank all the volunteers who filled in when I couldn t make it, namely Mollie Murphy, Steve Murphy, Simon Darwin, Shane Hoyland and Rob McLeod. And lastly a huge thank you to the parents who brought their kids along every week and helped out, all the fun couldn t be had without parent involvement and support. I enjoyed seeing the kid s smile each and every week and I hope to see you all next season. Tim Leggett 33 P a g e

SURF SPORTS REPORT it is not the ribbons that are placed around their necks today that are important, the most important thing is the team that you are creating this was said to me after the recent Australian Surf Life Saving Championship, having thought about it since, I think it does truly reflects our attitude. Many of you have heard me talk about the values of our team. Friendship being the glue that holds us all together. Teamwork is at the core of everything we do. Dedication that will allow us to achieve. Commitment to achieving our goals. These values came to the forefront throughout the season. At times some of our athletes were disappointed in not being selected to compete in teams events but understood that team selection was based on the benefit of the whole club, not just an individual race. Our athletes put their self-interests aside for the greater good of the club. It hurt at times, I could see it in their faces but not once did any athlete put their own interests over the team s success. To those athletes I Thank you and encourage you to dig deep, don t be disheartened, work hard and challenge yourself to be ready to do your best for your team should you be called upon next time round. Surf Sports this season covered all areas other than patrol competition. We were represented at all the major championships, in water, beach, boats, and first aid, pool and champion lifesaver events. I will mention the achievements of the season later in this report, but to say it was a full year would be an understatement. We had representatives selected at all team levels of surf, that being Branch, State and Australian teams, across both Surf and Pool competition. These too are listed later in this report, but to these members a well earnt congratulation. To our coaching team, Trevor Gee who heads up our water team thank you, your campaign was 46 weeks in duration this season, an outstanding effort. The results in medals reflects your dedication to our club, our athletes and our ideals. To your supporting team, Peter Braddish and Stephen Murphy, Thank you for your time and commitment as well this season. At the beginning of the season, we didn t have a boat sweep, with Grant Stringer returning to our club from Terrigal by the season s end we wound up with two crews, with our open girls making it through to the second day at Aussies. Thank you Grant and Phil Gee for your help this year building and working with the boat crews. Our first aiders and champion lifesavers were represented at all levels of competition. Thank you Maddison McLeod and Kerry Armstrong Smith for the effort and work that you have put in again this season. To our beach coach, Julie Jowett, thank you for your efforts, it has taken time to build the sand crabs but with each season there is more interest and more people attending. 34 P a g e

To the old man of the sea, Kelly Glew thank you for your work with the ski paddlers this year, it s great to see you out of retirement and back in the seat (retirement didn t last long did it). Last but not least, to Rick and the entire master s crew that continues to encourage others by showing the continued benefits of health and activity through sport. Well done. It would be remiss of me not to mention the results of the State and Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. At the beginning of this year our goal was for a top 10 finish in the state and a top 15 finish in the Aussies. We achieved an incredible 6 th place in the state and 10th in the Aussie point scores. This is an outstanding result and indicates the high level of commitment and performance from all those who participated. To our Australian Champions, you have created history. You will always be part of a very select group of people who have won gold. You should always remember that you are an Australian Champion in Surf Lifesaving Sport, and let that result lift you up and drive your motivation forward into your next competitions. Congratulations this is truly a remarkable achievement. Finally, it has been a pleasure to be involved with you all. I know at times we all may not agree with decisions that are made, but this is part of the nature of the sport we all participate in. Sometimes there is disappointment and sometime there is triumph. These times build character, strong leaders and champions. It teaches us, among other things that if we can t be the winner, that s ok, because being a kind person, contributing to a successful team and treating others with respect is equally as important. As a club, we should never loose site of our values that through sport we are creating great Australians and building a better community. A big Thank you and congratulations to you all. 47 VALE Mick Coffey joined Umina Surf Club in 1967 and remained till 1978 and after a brief absence re-joined in 1992 till his passing in He was awarded Life Membership in 2008 and was a member for over 34 years. Mick was encouraged to join in Surf Club activities by his parents Dennis and Brenda Coffey and participated in all Junior Activities moving onto Cadets and finally Masters. Mick was part of the Junior R & R Team who had won many major and State medals during their time under the skilful instructions of Dennis Coffey and John Sharpe. In his senior years Mick became involved in the surfboat area of the club initially as a rower and then trained to be a boat sweep. Mick trained and swept for our Masters, Cadets and Women s crews and with his skills they all had won many Branch and State medals. Mick was also involved in training many other members to become proficient boat sweeps and for some time Umina Surf Club was the leading Surf Boat club on the Central Coast. Apart from his competition Mick was also a conscientious and skilled patrol member and held the position of Patrol Captain for many years. Unfortunately over the years Mick has had to battle with skin cancer a disease that had also taken the life of his father and other family members. Mick fought a hard battle till the end and on the 31st December, 2015 and in the loving arms of his mother said goodbye to us all. For those of us who knew Mick personally it was a very sad loss and feel he gave us the best years of his life. In May this year we had the sad passing of Norma Morgan who was the wife of Peter Morgan. Peter is one of our long time serving Life Members and is always on hand to help. Norma was a gentle lady who always offered to help in the early days of the club and had many friends within Umina Surf Club. Our condolences were passed onto Peter and his family. Another member from Umina Surf Club who passed away in May this year was Vic Garrison who was part of the Surf Boat area within our club. Vic was actively involved in the training of the Boat crews in the 80 s. Vic originally came from Sydney Northern Beaches before moving his business to the Coast. 46 P a g e
