Though a very complete and high quality kit, I was disappointed with the material supplied for the wing leading edges, the prebent reed supplied for the wingtips, and the formed leading edge for the horizontal stab. Dowels were supplied for both the upper and lower wing leading edges. It s just too difficult to get a dowel long enough for a leading edge that isn t warped. I pulled them out of kit and set them aside. Pretty much the same for the Club Contacts Vice President Scott Carrigan Secretary Wil Cziep The Rogue River RC Club held their annual swap meet March 23rd. They reserved a large space at the County Fair Grounds which provided a convenient layout of Treasurer Dennis Laughlin Safety Officer Curt Boardman Board Members Dave Hicks Jim McCord Bart Pond Web Master Mike Carty (Continued on page 4) Fairchild AU-23 Peacemaker Lance Nordby No, it's not a Pilatus Turbo Porter! 2 (Continued from page 1) Peacemaker. Ok, Fairchild built these airplanes under license from Pilatus during the Vietnam War so it's pretty much a Pilatus Turbo Porter with a Garrett turbine engine. They were built for operation "Credible Chase" (whatever that means) but in the end the aircraft were found to be somewhat deficient. It was also used by the CIA for the "Air America" covert operation. Fifteen were built and they all ended up being sold to the Thai Air Force and used primarily for border control. This airplane is the result of my desire to have a scale war-bird that is pretty much the opposite of my F-20 Tigershark. I wanted a slow flying, touch-and-go plane that could also be used in war bird events and scale contests. The airframe was built using the plans from a Guilow's rubber band powered kit blown up 300% with quite a few modifications and additions. The changes include sheeting the top of the wings, the horizontal stab and the sides of the vertical stab. The landing gear was fabricated from K&S brass and aluminum tubing. I racked my brain trying to figure out what hobby hardware to use for the attachment to the side of the fuselage but finally came up with using tiny brass hinges from Lowes. The airframe only took about two weeks to build but figuring out all the little details took most of the time. Working out how to keep the rudder controls hidden was very time consuming. The tail wheel assembly took a lot of time as well. It was modeled in Solid- Works 3D CAD software and then the parts were created using the 3D printer I have available where I work. In the end though, it really finishes off the model. The wingspan is around 6 feet and it's 1/8th scale. I haven't gotten around to weighing it yet but it seems to be about 3.5 pounds. Power comes from a motor and ESC from a P-40 the hunters found in the swamp last winter. Thanks to whoever it belongs to (I offered to pay for it if someone claims it). (Continued from page 1) already hosted the CAP Cadets (June 3) where we had approximately 15 cadets participate. Unlike last year we did extremely well with only one major crash. I know the cadets really enjoy this event and have asked if we would be able to have another event for them this summer. This was our first time hosting Big Brother/Big Sisters (June 22). Although we had 16 confirmations we only had three participants show up. Those attending had a great time and have sent a personal thank you note. Patricia Blackburn (Director of Organizational Development) has asked if we might be able to schedule another event in the Fall. I would like to thank all the people that showed up to help and a special thanks to Dave and Pete for showing off their specials skills during the demonstration flights. I still need to add the markings and dull coat. I'm also looking for a couple of guys to sit in the front seats. And finally, I'm going to put a photo of Chris B. looking out one of the port holes. She has about a dozen flights logged now and about 50 touch-and-goes. It's really fun to fly. Best regards, We currently have three students that are learning to fly (Steve, Mitchell, and Harry). All three students are progressing well, although Harry as taken a backseat to let Mitchell (his grandson) have more stick time. Once Mitchell solos, we will have Harry back up in the air. 4 (Continued from page 1) tables for those displaying and selling everything from kits, built models to misc hardware. Bob Duncan While not as large at the McMinnville swap meet, they did have a full house with lots of goodies to choose from. Several nice large scale models were sold at a steal and there were a few great deals on nitro motors. It is always interesting to check out these swap meets and make it a day or weekend adventure as one can always find something he must add to his collection of RC treasures! Hello to all from your "Safety Guy" here with some news I recently received from a safety warning put out by Shell Oil Co. I Will attach the complete article for you to read, but the most important "culprit" is our cellular devices. In the article you will see some statistics that site cases where "mobile devices" (cell phones) caused fires at fueling locations. The reason I bring this up is that we "out having fun with our airplanes" answer the cell phone while refueling...will that cause a problem, maybe not, but I make it a habit of turning off my cell phone as I am parking my vehicle to not be bothered with calls and to avoid the possibility of static electricity could ignite fuel. As I know some of you are mixing your own fuel with regular gasoline, that makes the possibility of ignition of fuels at a higher risk than with our "Nitro fuels". Give this some thought and as always think safety when out having fun. Curt Boardman, Safety Officer for Fly-A-Ways "Treasure today--tomorrow might be too late" WARNING FROM SHELL OIL COMPANY DO NOT DELETE, PLEASE READ (Continued on page 12) 4

Meeting Minutes: Tues 06/18/2013 Call to order at 7:00pm. Welcome new members & visitors: 18 members present. No visitors. Great Flights and Great Crashes: a) Richard Styffie reported on a near miss of a member s model nearly hitting a visitor during an out of control landing. The visitor was parked too close to the runway. Signage to direct visitors to safe parking was discussed & to be acted on by Curt Boardman, Safety Officer. b) Scott Enochs reported he lost his Balsa USA Nieuport 16 at CAP Day due to a failed on-board RX battery. The 4-cell battery measured only 3.2V upon retrieval. c) Dwaine Smith said the new field at the Evergreen museum is coming along.the grass is in. A chapel now sits on the old site (Dennis L said it s his son s fault cause that s where he s getting married in September) d) Tim & Pete s heli school was a great success. They flew all day up to dusk. Pete calculated that he had 6 hours of air time on the buddy box. Officers Report: President - The soil sample taken from the grass runway passed with flying colors. Amazing what some good compost will do.the Pres is declaring war on the gophers that reside at the east end of the grass runway. Plan one is to smoke em with road flares stuffed into the burrows. The war on dandelions will continue soon. Vice President - CAP Day (Evening) was a success. Thanks to all that helped out. We have a good relationship with the cadets and they have agreed to help us with parking and other activities (possibly air boss duties) at the scale event in September. Don t forget the Big Brothers and Sisters will be at the field on 6/22. Treasurer - We have approx $8,819 in the bank with a budget position of approx $4,600. (editorial comment from the Pres - Looks like we can afford our ongoing maintenance projects and might want to discuss purchase of a new lawn tractor). We now stand at 130 members (with 17 youth). (Continued on page 6) 5

(Continued from page 5) Secretary - not present Safety Officer - Curt Boardman will be looking into signage to guide visitors to safe parking and viewing areas. Curt reminded everyone to please keep up to date and read the AMA safety code and our field rules. Announcements: a) Upcoming Events - Lots of events are on the calendar for the club and in general for the local area and Pacific Northwest. Check out the event listing on the website and as distributed in s. b) FAW Annual Club Picnic & Family Day- Saturday July 13 all day! Family and friends welcome! Club provides burgers, dogs, chicken patties, and fixings prepared to perfection on the club grill. Members bring side dishes if they wish. Old Business: a) Big Brothers/Big Sisters Day - June noon. See VP report. b) FAW Club Day - July 13. See announcements. c) Oregon Scale Fly-In & USSMA Challenge - Sept Scott E is recruiting volunteers to train as judges, or to help with registration, score keeping, and air traffic control (air boss). If you have not already volunteered please contact SE if you would like to help. There are ways to help and still participate in the event, so don t be shy. d) EDF Jet Event - Sept 28 (Oct 5 rain date). Still a ways out. e) Ongoing 2013 field development and maintenance - Need to discuss use of geotex below rock in new wet weather parking area, then bring in geotex and rock. Not sure about next step in triangle, but natural grass is coming in. Will continue to work grass by aerating and floating. Will plan on additional top dressing before the September events. War on gophers is declared (see Pres report). War on weeds to continue. Scott C to consider how we can refurbish the club sign at the gate. New Business: a) Scott C has been approached by the Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics program (STEM) of the Hillsboro School District with a request for the club to participate with the 5 th grade aeronautical & space training program. The club was in favor of pursuing next winter with an indoor program and this could be in partnership with Ken G s PCC Rock Creek class. 6

(Continued from page 1) pre-bent reed wingtips and pre-formed stabilizer leading edge. I ve worked with reed briefly and generally don t like it. My solution was to replace these kit parts with laminated structures. Figure 1: Wing leading edge materials Figure 1 displays the 5/16 dowel supplied with the kit for the leading edge and the 1/8 X 1/2 Spruce, 1/8 X 1/2 Bass, and 1/8 X 3/8 Bass that I used for the laminate. The laminate materials were chosen to build a slightly oversized leading edge that could easily be planed and sanded to shape. Spruce was used for the base layer for strength, and bass for the outer layers for strength, low weight, and machineability. It s fairly easy to find 48 lengths that are straight and true. Next step is to glue the pieces together. I used thick CA to bond the laminate. Figure 2: Bonded laminate Figure 3: Bonded laminate The fronts of the wing ribs were supplied with a circular edge to accept the dowel. I cut the fronts flat, leaving enough wood to form a tab that could fit into a slot to be cut into the leading edge. I then used a miter saw to slot the spruce at every rib. All that s left to do is press the slotted leading edge onto the rib tabs and wick thin CA into the slots to glue in place. Figure 4: Slotted leading edge and tab on rib Figure 5: Leading edge installed. Note slots at each rib. (Continued on page 9) 8

(Continued from page 8) Wingtips are a bit more involved since they require bending and forming. However, the good news is that the thin pieces bend very easily before they are bonded together. I soak wood in water with some ammonia added to soften it for bending and forming. Get a long piece of 2 diameter PVC tube and some fittings to seal one end and have a screw cap on the other. Fill the tube with water, a spritz of ammonia, insert sticks, cap the tube, and walk away for an hour or so. While the sticks are soaking make up a bending jig from scrap wood. Remove wood from the soaking tube, stack them in the order they will be laminated, and clamp in the jig. Let them dry overnight clamped in the jig. Figure 6: The soaking tube Figure 7: Wet sticks clamped in the jig Unlike the leading edge, which was glued up into a laminate before gluing to the ribs, I glue up one layer at a time for the wingtips. Each layer is very pliable and it s easy to match the shape of the wingtip to the shape on the plan. Again, I used CA to build up the laminate, gluing a short section at a time. In Figure 8 you can see that the laminate parts are made long so they can be individually trimmed to length as the wingtip is built up layer by layer. Cut and fit the first layer to the leading and trailing edges and the spars, then cut, fit, and glue up the next layers one at a time. Note in the photos that the leading and trailing edges are cut to fit to the wingtip after the wingtip is in place. Figure 8: Four layers of alternating bass and balsa and the reed wingtip they replace (Continued on page 10) 9

(Continued from page 9) fitted Figure 9: 1st Figure 10: All 4 layers in place layer The leading edge of the horizontal stab was made in an identical fashion to the wingtips. Once the laminate is glued up it can be cut, planed, and sanded to final shape. Figure 11: The finished project. Left hand stabilizer leading edge. Figure 12: Close up. You can see the 4 layers. 12 (Continued from page 4) Please send this information to ALL your family & friends, especially those who have kids in the car with them while pumping gas. If this were to happen, they may not be able to get the children out in time. MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU DON'T OWN A CAR. Shell Oil Comments - A MUST READ! Safety Alert! Here are some reasons why we don't allow cell phones in operating areas, propylene oxide handling and storage area, propane, gas and diesel refueling areas. The Shell Oil Company recently issued a warning after three incidents in which mobile phones (cell phones) ignited fumes during fueling operations In the first case, the phone was placed on the car's trunk lid during fueling; it rang and the ensuing fire destroyed the car and the gasoline pump. In the second, an individual suffered severe burns to their face when fumes ignited as they answered a call while refueling their car! And in the third, an individual suffered burns to the thigh and groin as fumes ignited when the phone, which was in their pocket, rang while they were fueling their car. You should know that: Mobile Phones can ignite fuel or fumes Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition Mobile phones should not be used in filling stations, or when fueling lawn mowers, boat, etc. Mobile phones should not be used, or should be turned off, around other materials that generate flammable or explosive fumes or dust, (I.e., solvents, chemicals, gases, grain dust, etc...) TO sum it up, here are the Four Rules for Safe Refueling: 1) Turn off engine 2) Don't smoke 3) Don't use your cell phone - leave it inside the vehicle or turn it off 4) Don't re-enter your vehicle during fueling. Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of 'static electricity' at gas pumps. His company has researched 150 cases of these fires. His results were very surprising: 1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women. (Continued on page 13) 12

(Continued from page 12) 2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas. When finished, they went back to pull the nozzle out and the fire started, as a result of static. 3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes. 4) Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires. 5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas 6) It is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause the fire, when connected with static charges. 7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was re-entered and the nozzle was touched during refueling from a variety of makes and models. Some resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and to the customer. 8) Seventeen fires occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began. Mr. Renkes stresses to NEVER get back into your vehicle while filling it with gas. If you absolutely HAVE to get in your vehicle while the gas is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you ever remove the nozzle. As I mentioned earlier, The Petroleum Equipment Institute, along with several other companies now, are really trying to make the public aware of this danger. I ask you to please send this information to ALL your family and friends, especially those who have kids in the car with them while pumping gas. If this were to happen to them, they may not be able to get the children out in time. 13
