1 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Dusters News February 2008 Dave Legard brought a fast collection of Delta wing aircraft to Duster Field. Among them is this scratch built, semi scale SR-71, An OS.46 in pusher configuration powered it nicely. Very exciting to watch in the air Well, I am back on line, with new hardware, new software and the February issue of Dusters News. I will publish the January issue as soon as I retrieve it from my cold, dead hard drive. We ll call that a future Bonus Issue Flying season has arrived in Oregon, at least temporarily, and its time to get that new stuff out to the field and start getting the bugs worked out and the rust out of the the pilot s reaction times. This season seems to hold a lot of activity. It will be summer before you know it, and something is always happening in the region as far as RC events go. Look forward to seeing you all the field Lets Fly!! That s Earl Cox, kneeling behind the finest flying Bi- Plane kit ever produced, a Goldberg, Bucher Jungmann. His is powered with a Saito 125, finished in a gorgeous yellow scheme and flies like the rest of them.very very well. This one is powered nicely and flies fast. Yes, my prejudice shows, and yes, I have already contacted Great Planes about re introducing this kit. Designed by Dave Patrick, it was a slow seller when introduced. This 64 span version has since been acclaimed by all who ever built or owned one, to be one the best flying biplanes ever kitted. Master builder Sergei Dennenbaum has finished a pattern classic from the past, a Midwest Mach One. This one is a copy of one he flew in the 70 s with an original Kraft.61 and retracts. 2 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 2 January Meeting Notes The January meeting of the Dusters was called to order on Monday, January 24 th, with 14 members present. A hearty Dusters Welcome is extended to new members Nick Smith of Tigard, Alan Radek of Roseburg and Darren Harper of Canby. Welcome aboard Gentlemen, we are delighted to have you with us. The treasurer s report reinforced the notion that we are still solvent. Those wishing detailed financial information regarding the Dusters are encouraged to contact treasurer dale nelson. He keeps a wonderful set of books!! Field Marshall Bill bale reported that he has just begun springtime work on the field with the recent breaks in the weather. Membership stands at 75 paid members as of January 28 th. Rick Dunn opened the meeting with an informative talk about the Scalemasters Boot Camp under development. Rick says we have about 30 pilots committed and the endorsement and involvement of the Scalemasters leadership. This is a first event of this kind and will walk pilots through the event process from beginning to end. Bill Ensley will be here to talk about documentation and others will be present to teach static and flight judging to potential judges. It is hoped that this event will be reformatted and packaged for use by any club in the world. A reminder that this event is free to anyone willing to participate, with a CD and documentation given to every participant. The Dusters Deli will be on site on Saturday and vendors have notified Scalemasters that there will be giveaways. This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 th and begins at 8 AM until whenever. Sunday will be an optional practice day but should not interfere with normal flying activity that day. Any further inquiries should be directed to Rick Dunn In Other Business: Terry announced that the Scalemasters qualifier will be hosted by the Skyknights this year at the Molalla field. A request went out to the membership for someone to check on local pricing to recover the field Quonset Hut. Franke Snow accepted this responsibility. The Dusters have been contacted by the Molalla club to possibly purchase their 20 steel container for use as a secure shed on site. After some discussion on the merits of steel containers vs. truck van bodies, it was decided to have Terry and Bob Hoover take a closer look at the steel container for sale. Don requested that the mower to be brought to his place for service The $100 progressive drawing has been stuck on that number for quite a few months, with no winner present to collect. It was decided to continue the present format until someone does win it, at which point we will start over at $50 and work our way up. This time, however, all present at the meeting will have their names added to the entire membership already in the lottery. To increase the odds of winning for those who regularly attend meetings. Fuel Winner was Franke Snow Gift Certificates went to Earl Cox and Chris Stone Progressive winner was Darren Harper, who was not present. Paid Dues Winner of the New Radio was Ray Fisher. 3 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 3 Collector and Swap Meet in McMinnville, Oregon Friday evening and Saturday, March 7th and 8th, 2008 Yamhill County Fair Grounds, 2070 N. E. Lafayette St. The fairgrounds are in north McMinnville, just south of the steel mill on Lafayette Street. From the north turn left onto Lafayette at the first stop light and drive 1/3 mile. From the south go through McMinnville on Highway 99 and turn right onto Lafayette. Mapquest has better directions. Tables are $12 each and general admission is $2. Hours are 4pm to 8pm Friday and 9am to 2pm on Saturday. Doors will be open at 8am Saturday for swap meet set up. For information phone Popcorn and coffee provided by hosts. Plan on having a good time talking to modelers and, perhaps finding a good bargain. Please help spread the information. The Model Aviation Showcase will be open for visiting, 3000 square feet of modeling since the late 1920s. The Evergreen Aviation Museum is here, also; you may want to make it a week end visit. A reminder to all that there is a fantastic flyer for the Scalemasters Boot camp posted on the Dusters Web site. Check it out under local events. The Evergreen Static Show at the Evergreen Aviation Museum takes place the weekend of February 29th. You can take planes in Friday afternoon or Saturday AM and pick them up after 4 on Sunday. You get a free sneak peek into the Museum in the process. Tips and Tricks Custom trim sealer from Donald Kavanaugh Cut the ends off large aluminum rain gutter nails. Then bend, file, and polish the resulting rods to make custom trim-sealer tools that can be inserted into your Top Flite trimsealing iron. Push rods Did you ever go through all the trouble to make up your control surface push rods only to find at installation that they were a quarter inch too short? Try this easy way to get the lengths just right. Tie a string to the control horn on the control surface. Drop the free end of the string through the fuselage. With the control surface in the neutral position, tie the other end of the string to the servo arm. Cut off the excess string at both tie points. Now, cut the string at the two and what you end up with is a piece of string that is the exact length of the push rod you will need to fabricate. Sandbag weights Fill plastic Ziploc bags of various sizes approximately three-quarters full of fine sand and seal each well. Use these to hold down large parts of your airplane, such as wings, while building. The sand conforms to the shape of the parts.
