1 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Dusters News August 2008 Nathan Keil, holding what has to be one of the fastest planes found at Duster Field, his Sundowner. Although it reminds me of a sailplane in the pits, with a strikingly long wing, in the air it is a pure pylon racer. Nathan does an outstanding job, not only keeping up with it, but flying it in a graceful manner as well. Jerry Turrentine with a striking example of the ubiquitous Cub. A beautiful example of Jerry s craftsmanship, a talent I have admired as he has produced so many airplanes over the years. Keep it up Jerry Oh Lord, how did it come to pass that the August issue of the Dusters News can possibly be due for publication. Seemingly days ago it was June, and the future flying season was going to be one of personal involvement and activity! And while there was activity abound, I was not much a part of it and now, the seasons end is in distant sight. I can only be thankful that many Dusters have made this a summer of involvement and activity, and in doing so, have provided the information it is my pleasure to present here. Get Busy and Fly, Guys! INSIDE: jay Dan Lurvey s latest IMAC terror, his new YAK 55. A DA- 100 twin provides all the power needed for Dan s 3D routine. It has been interesting to watch Dan s progress over the last year as his equipment, and more importantly, his flying skills, have seen a steady improvement Ray Fisher breaks in to the world of big ones with his large scale YAK 54. 2 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 2 Meeting Notes The July meeting of the Dusters RC Club was called to Order on July 28th at the field. We had 17 members present with no new members or guests in attendance. The minutes were read and approved, a partial treasurers report read and Terry reported that membership in this outfit has reached 105. Signs for the Deli were displayed and thanks extended to JK Aerotech for their contribution. They also left a couple of 4x8 sheets of coroplast type material for any further requirements we may have. Terry reviewed the financial impact of the Bigger Bird event and lefty no doubt that this is indeed a profitable venture for our club. It was reported that at one time, there were 85 vehicles parked on site and a rather steady stream in and out throughout the day. Terry also reported that gift certificates for the Deli crew had been purchased and delivered. Terry reported that the new field container has been painted and is ready for delivery on site. The club was reminded of the upcoming CUB Nuts event at the Molalla field Sept 19 and 20 as well as our own Cub racing events August 6th and September 9th. The club leadership is asking for volunteers to assist with club instructor efforts. Our instructor base is limited, our availability is spotty and we are in need of some fresh blood. You don t have to be an expert flyer to instruct. Let Terry know of your interest and lets get some more names on the instructor list. A long discussion was entered regarding the next field maintenance moves to make on our field. This involves moving some of the tail traps and smoothing out some of the overrun and unused put areas to the north and south of the runway. In the end it was decided to wait until Mother Natures soil softener, our Oregon rains, contribute their effect to the field. Specific changes will be addressed at the next several meetings. Our involvement with the Clackamas County Fair was discussed. We will again do a static show and maybe our interactive simulator this year. We are a valued participant at the fair. Rick Dunn was on hand to drum up support for more Dusters involvement with the Scalemasters Association. He discussed the regional structure, the goal of determining a NW Scale Champion and the desire to expand the number of events in This not only involves club participation with a field, but extensive work contributions from its members. In the end, club leadership doubts that we have the required manpower to pull off an event of this size. We did decide to put it to the members, however, to help in this decision and provide an answer to Scalemasters by our September meeting. Jay will develop a questionnaire to this effect and get it out to the membership. In the early planning department of this months meeting, Terry has issued a plea for an announcer for next years Bigger Bird. All DJ types need only express their interest to Terry and we will get you on the list for next June s event. The meeting was adjourned at 8 PM. 3 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 3 Miscellany It is with great pleasure and a host of thanks to those involved with the acquisition, refurbishment and placement of the field Container, that I can now publish a picture of said unit on site and in use. Radio Notice Suppose they Sponsored a Race and Nobody Came That s what happened at Duster field on August 6th for the first of our Cub Races. While the threat of bad weather made some nervous, this was a rain or shine event. Come on guys, we can do better. Lets prove it September 9th, when the second of our Cub races takes flight. The new JR X9303 Radio has a wire bundle that rubs when the Gamble is moved. If this is allowed to continue the wires could become damaged resulting in loss of control of your aircraft. This problem also effects the Heli version. If you need help with this issue I can put in touch with a club member who has done the fix on some local units. Terry Our resident Mad Engineer, Earl Cox, has earned his Multi Engine rating in a big way, as he has designed both the twin and the 4 engined, drain pipe fuselage, Cub winged wonders shown here. Powered by Evolution Pro.46 s both are extremely stable flyers and have logged more than enough flight time to qualify them as successful designs. I might add colorful designs as well. Good job Earl, we love the sound of those multis in the air!!

Methodically followed, you will be amazed at the results Flight Trimming Proper Center of Gravity (CG): Method A Roll model inverted. A. Slight down elevator required for level flight no adjustments. B. Significant down-elevator required to sustain level flight move battery pack backward. C. No down-elevator required to sustain level flight move battery pack forward. Proper CG: Method B From level flight, roll model to a knife-edge. A. Model falls without dropping nose or tail no adjustments. B. Nose drops move battery pack backward. C. Tail drops move battery pack forward. Engine thrust up/down From level flight out around 100 yards, pull to a vertical climb directly in front of you, release sticks and observe deviations. A. Model continues straight up no adjustments. B. Model pitches toward wheels decrease down thrust. C. Model pitches toward canopy increase right thrust. Engine thrust- left/right Fly model straight and level into the wind and pull vertical. A. Model continues straight up no adjustments. B. Model veers left increase right thrust. C. Model veers right decrease right thrust. Knife-edge flight pitch Fly model into wind, maintaining knife-edge flight with minimal rudder. Do this from each direction. A. Model continues on knife edge without deviation no adjustments. B. Model pitches toward landing gear mix in up-elevator with rudder. C. Model pitches toward canopy mix in down elevator with rudder. Knife edge flight roll Fly model into wind. Do this from each direction, maintaining knife-edge flight with minimal rudder. A. Model continues on knife edge without deviation no adjustments. B. Model tries to roll mix in opposite aileron with rudder. Aileron differential Fly model level heading into the wind or downwind. Pull to a 45-degree climb, and roll with aileron. A. Model rolls without yaw no adjustments. B. Model exits yawed in opposite direction of roll increase differential. Increase up throw on aileron. C.
