1 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Dusters News Cubmania, a highly infectious disease usually found among those with a desire to commit aviation, has seemingly swept the Willamette Valley. Here we see Bob Beardsley, Don Schultz and Kelly Martin with giant infections of the disease. You know its giant scale when you lay under the wing to work on it!! Gentlemen Another month has blown by and as you will see, it was a busy one at Duster Field and with its members. Let me take this opportunity to remind you all that pictures and information forwarded my way regarding our activities goes a long way towards a successful newsletter. There is so much that I miss that goes unreported. With that, thanks Terry, Chris, and Cliff for your help!! A lot of reminders that this is election night and the last meeting at the field this year. Take this opportunity to get involved and contribute to making this a better club for everyone. 2 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 2 Meeting Notes The August meeting of the Dusters RC Club was called to order at 7 PM on August 27 th by President Terry Criswell. There were 20 members present and the meeting took place at the conclusion of a fantastic flying day and dinner. Minutes and the Treasurers report were read and approved. A motion was made and passed to invest another $2K into a Certificate of Deposit after the rent is paid for 08. The Secretary was directed to write Thank You letters to area Hobby Shops that have made contributions to the club meetings and events as well as Ron Campbell for his dedicated effort on our behalf at the Clackamas County Fair. Bill Bale volunteered to help with the field maintenance and was appointed Field Marshall for his effort..with Club thanks. OLD BUSINESS A prior idea regarding a daytime Family Barbecue in lieu of our election night dinner was reintroduced for discussion. After some discussion, some roadblocks and an apparent lack of enthusiasm for the idea, it was decided to proceed with our normal election night meeting and dinner. Sincere Dusters Thanks to Ron Campbell, Don Steigman, Earl Cox and the others I have missed for their contributions to our presentation at the Clackamas County Fair. You did an outstanding job! NEW BUSINESS Terry opened the new business seeking a consensus among members at to how many events we should run in the summer, without intruding on our sport flying membership base. The answer appeared to be one a month. It is possible the club will receive a small truck box for field storage. This would be a donation from an, as yet, unnamed member. Club members were enthusiastic over the security this will bring to our equipment at the field./ August is the start of the new election cycle, with nominations opened for the September election. The existing slate of officers were renominated. ` N0minations will re open before the general election in is held at the September club meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 Fuel Winner was Jackie Bale Gift Certificates were taken home by Kevin Bodde and Bob Sommer The $100 progressive winner was Kevin Cahill, who was not present. The September Meeting: Is always a notable affair. It is the last meeting of the year held at the field and is the election night for next years slate of officers. Come early and fly, dinner is at 6, and this meeting usually starts a little bit early as we race the sun to the conclusion of the day. Nominations for officers will re open before the vote takes place and this is a wonderful opportunity to make yourself heard and help us set the agenda for the 2008 Flying season. 3 The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 3 Around the Pylons Like many, I have watched pylon racing from afar and felt a bit intimidated by the seeming danger of the sport and by the nagging suspicion that, maybe, I just wouldn t be competitive. During the recent Cubs Classics and Warbirds event, on a slightly planned impulse, I decided to try my hand at it. There weren t many entries and I thought I would just get the feel of the experience. I had a well run in P 51, comparatively slow, in the back of the pickup, so off I went. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease, relaxation and the simplicity of actual racing. Pylon racing is Bank and Yank, they say, but a winning pilot must concentrate more on the smooth execution of the pylon course. Too much yank in the turn and you can see the plane visibly slow It is much faster to fly a little wider course and smooth out the corners than to see how tight you can make the turn. (Get on a cheap Go Kart ride and feel what happens when you pull tight corners!) Of course, there is also the additional fear of a mid air that must be dealt with.., But I am here to say that the fear, and really the risk of a crash, disappears in the excitement and the participation in an actual race. Very quickly, you find yourself fixated on the guy ahead of you, and trying every trick you can think of to catch him. You will also find that you are oblivious to the rest of the pack Those planes behind you are meaningless and your concentration is focused on your plane and the one in front of you. Pylon racing also allows a pilot to pick an altitude that feels comfortable. It is a simple matter of picking a height that the pack is not using to feel even more relaxed while racing. Returning to my experience, I must say that I enjoyed the racing a lot, much more than I ever thought I would. I suggest that everyone give it a try. Perhaps we can even convince the club to set up the pylons once a month or so for experience and practice. Club inspectors admire the craftsmanship found on Wally Tift s exquisite Cessna 337 Skymaster. The unique pusher puller twin finally got airborne after a morning of tinkering with engine s and fuel tanks. Of course my pictures of that first flight came out of focus and in no way portrayed the beauty of this plane in the air. I am sure Wally will agree that it flew very well and the sound of the twin engines was an incredible experience. Now Gary, lets get yours up there with it!! Steve Stricker and Jeff Thoennes inspect a firewall on Steve s Nosen P-51 that has nearly torn itself completely away from the fuselage after a couple of flights of full flap approaches and landings.

His Widgeon under construction, (right) his large scale Gulfstream, (below right) and his Citabria on Floats, (below) were crowd favorites. The booth presented a lot of information about modeling and the activities at Duster Field. Other club members brought in a good cross selection of models such as those seen hanging right. Earl Cox, shown below, educating a group of potential modelers while the simulator on the table saw a lot of heavy use.
