1 Short Wing Piper Club Buckeye Chapter June 2, 2017 The next fly-in is Saturday July 15, 2017, at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport (KSGH). Details on p. 3. Report of May 13 th Fly-In to Andy Barnhart Memorial Apt, New Carlisle, OH The combination of excellent weather, Leroy Lynn s hospitality and fried chicken, and the fascinating collection of general aviation aircraft at Barnhart Memorial Airport produced another great turnout. Arriving by plane were, Jim Beisner (Troy) and Tim Pinkerton (Trotwood) in a PA-22 Tri- Pacer, Dean & Amy Dayton (PA-22/20 - Marysville) and Ralph & Jan Widman (Colt - Lynchburg). Driving to the meeting were Tom & Denise Anderson (Mason), Leon and Carol Awalt (Cint i), Russ & Sherry Mintkenbaugh (West Chester), Doug Smith (New Carlisle), and, of course, host Leroy Lynn (New Carlisle). Ralph Widman sent some of his memory notes : Leroy s fried chicken was super. It s locally made. 1. Russ and Sherry Mintkenbaugh drove in on a motorcycle. He's building a Wag-a-Bond vagabond knock-off using a Colt fuselage and wings. Using a 100 HP Corvair engine. 2. Leroy s son, John, joined us later. He's helping Leroy with his Tri-Pacer s annual. Leroy is a good story teller. Think he has a Clipper project, too? 3. Jim Beisner flew in with Tim Pinkerton whom we meet at Phillipsburg 15 years ago. Tim is at Moraine Airport. now and is a Waco nut..4. Leroy had Doug Smith join us and he gave us an informative talk on Airtex fabric and on the Ryan ST from the start. He rolled the Mooney Mite outside and then the Ryan. Was super to see the Ryan in the daylight and on the ramp. 5. Airtex comments: the Mooney had been covered in Airtex 20 years ago and looked as good as it did on the first day. He used Airtex on the Ryan and you could not even see the edges of the tapes. Doug is the man behind the Ryan restoration (it won the top Gold Lindy Grand Champion at Oshkosh last summer). A very intelligent 30-something year old. Airtex is a polyurathane operation mainly. He said spraying it is difficult and takes practice and skill. It likes to run or orange peel. It's lighter than PolyFiber and butyrate dope systems. First coat applies a combination mildew prevention and UV-blocker coat. This combination is white in color making it an ideal primer for the final color coat. Next step is one coat of color and you are done. It is easy to repair. Scuff sand and glue on patch. Oh it costs more than the other processes. On the Ryan ST he commented last year at Oshkosh the judges gave him a hard time on using Dzus fasteners as they thought they had been developed a few years AFTER the Ryan was made, therefore not original. But Doug was able to show them the Dzus s were developed in the early 1930 s but the patent was issued years later in The Ryan was first flown in 1934, according to Wikipedia. So the judges had to eat crow and all this time they had been marking against the Dzus if it was used before its patent date. He had to explain what "Patent Pending" means. There were only five Ryans made with the inline Menasco B4, 95 hp engine, and this is the only one flying or remaining. The rest of them had radial engines, I believe. The owner, Ted Teach, doesn't like to see reinforcing tapes so Doug spent hours filling and sanding the tapes Page 1 of 5

2 to bury them. He replaced many sheet metal skins and made most of all the fairings. He had two helpers - one was a WW2 veteran who died just after the first flight of this restoration. He had been very healthy until the last few days. There was a lever sticking out the right side of the nose cowl. It said OFF-OIL-ON. It s a dry sump engine, so in order to keep the bottoms of the cylinders from filling up with oil when parked they turn the valve off. Saves them from having to drain all four rocker covers before each start. The judges gave him issue over this "modification". He reminded them that changes for safety are not held against a rebuilder. Oh, our landing at Barnhart went long and we hit the over-run grass fortunately on the east end of the airport. Those drum brakes were very ineffective and I'd like to have that landing back! Signed: Ralph Widman Leon Awalt, Doug Smith, Jim Beisner, Tim Pinkerton, Leroy Lynn - Ralph Widman, Russ Mintkenbugh, Dean Dayton - Jan Widman, Carolyn Awalt, Denise Anderson, and Amy Dayton The Gold Lindy Grand Champion Ryan ST. Wings and co ntrol surfaces are covered in Airtex. Russ & Sherry Mintenbaugh Mooney Mite - The pilot doesn t climb in, s/he wears it. Page 2 of 5
