4 Women s Outlook Kelsey Patterson The University of Utah women s swimming and diving team is coming off its third straight Mountain West Conference regular-season championship and its fi rst conference championship. Going into the season the Utes are looking to go for their second title and entrench themselves on the national level. The team is fresh off a season that saw it go 9-1 in dual meet competition and 8-0 in conference dual meets. The Utes then racked up points on their way to winning the MWC Championship meet and setting eight new school records in the process. In , Utah has its sights set high again. Our goal this year is to go out and top last year s result by doing it again and winning a second title, says Head Coach Michael Litzinger. Last Year was special, but it s a new year and our focus is on this season. Experience will be a key to success this season for the team. Of the fi ve seniors on the team three of them are conference champions and record holders. We have great leadership in this senior class and a lot of swimmers that have been through the process before. That s a great place to start, adds Litzinger. Utah will also have a strong group of underclassmen that will add talent and depth and be a key in its run for a second consecutive conference meet championship. 4 An early look at the schedule has several big meets that will be key in reaching the goal of becoming a presence on a national level and preparing for another conference championship run. Nov. 4, the team will travel to UNLV to face one of the top teams in the conference. December 1-3 will give the team a look at some quality national talent, as they will compete in the Ohio State Invitational. With fi ve teams competing including host Ohio State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Utah, it will serve as preparation for a run at the end of the year. The regular season will conclude with rival BYU coming to Salt Lake City on February 2. Utah hasn t lost a home dual meet since Overall the Utes look to be one of the strongest teams in the conference in each event. We look very strong in every event this year and have title potential. That bodes well for the relays as well, states Litzinger. Sprint/Freestyle 2006 MWC Swimmer of the Year, Amber Walter who qualifi ed and competed at the NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle, will lead the sprint events. Walter is also the returning conference champion in the 50 freestyle. Jennifer Fredsall and Annie VanLeeuwen will also play a big part in the sprint events. Alison McInturff will be expected to lead the team in the 200 freestyle. In the distance freestyle events the two-time conference champion in the 1650 freestyle, Rachel Curci returns. Junior transfer Melissa Helmers and freshman Karly Roberts will support her. Butterfly The Utes return Fredsall, the conference runner-up in the 100 fl y. Kelly McIntyre and Michelle Blair round out what looks to possibly be the strongest event for the Utes this Jennifer Fredsall season. Backstroke Utah boasts a pair of school-record holders in the backstroke event. Sophomore Shannon McQueen and senior Marissa Martin hold the Utah school records for 100 and 200 backstroke. respectively. Freshman Beth Gunderson will add depth and has the ability to become a key component in the future. Breaststroke Walter is the defending conference champion in the 100 breaststroke and also holds the conference and school records in the event. She will be backed by conference fi nalist Caitlin Tidwell and in addition Adrienne Coburn. IM Last year, McInturff set the school record in the 200 IM and will return this season. Adrienne Coburn and Beth Gunderson and will also compete for the Utes. In the 400 IM Coburn will lead the event and newcomers Karly Roberts and Melissa Helmers will contribute as well. Diving The divers will be anchored by Kelsey Patterson who qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships in both the one- and three-meter diving events. Diving is one of the most important parts of our success and the team has done a tremendous job for us, concludes Litzinger. UNIVERSITY OF UTAH

11 Men s Outlook The University of Utah men s swimming and diving team may be coming off a 4-3 season last year, with a 2-3 mark in the Mountain West Conference, but that hasn t sidetracked the team from what it hopes to accomplish each time it hits the water. the Utes to achieve their team goals this season. This class of seniors contributed the bulk of the team points last season and the time is now for them to step up and lead the team. We are coming off a surprising season last year, comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. We led the conference championship after two days but I think the youth showed a little bit. This year, we are looking to hold the lead by learning from what we ve been through. The men look to improve from last year s results and contended for a conference championship. Our goals are the same this year and that is winning the conference championship. While the Utes didn t accomplish this goal last season, they still fi nished strong in recording a 26th-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships, the highest fi nish for any team from the MWC. Utah will boast a more experienced group this season, which could be a big factor in its success in In terms of leadership, experience and athleticism this is the strongest senior class I ve had in my time at Utah, states Litzinger. Senior swimmers; Matt Bailey, Jeremy Clark, Andrew Cole, David Johnson and David Maasberg along with senior divers Damien Brown and Andrew Jones will be heavily relied upon for Damien Brown The schedule will provide the men s team with several big meets and opportunities to hone their talents against of the top athletes from around the nation. Utah will travel to UNLV, the back-toback conference champions on Nov. 4. On Nov. 10th, the team will swim at Purdue in a meet that will also include Georgia, Louisville and Penn State. The Purdue meet is an opportunity to race some teams on a national level that we normally don t see and we look forward to that opportunity, comments Litzinger. Michel DeCarolis December 1-3, Utah will participate in the Ohio State Invitational. The team will fi nish with three straight home meets against Wyoming, Air Force and BYU. Going into the new season the Utes look to be an improved squad in all disciplines. We ve really improved in our medley relays and our sprint relay teams have always been formidable. Overall we look to have a strong team, says Litzinger. Sprint/Freestyle The sprint freestyle events will be led by David Maasberg and Matt Bailey. The Utes should receive additional help from Israel national team member Vitali Pushkar-Verbitsky and freshman Bryan Edmunds. Senior Jeremy Clark will anchor the middistance for the Utes, which should be one of Utah s strongest events going into the season. George Evans and Adam Oliver are returning in the mid-distance events as well. Other distance swimmers that should have an impact on the team this season include newcomer Seamus Alger, junior Tanner Folster and Division II All-American Marco Ferraro. Butterfly Andrew Brown is back for his junior season and will look to challenge in the MWC this season. Vitali Pushkar-Verbitsky will add instant depth in the 100 butterfl y and could become a factor in the conference race at season s end. In the 200 butterfl y, freshman Will Leonhart will add depth as well. Backstroke School-record holder Andrew Cole will return for his senior season. Dave Johnson will also be an impact swimmer in the backstroke events. Tanner Folster and Adam Oliver will have opportunities in the backstroke events as well Breaststroke In the breaststroke, the Utes have turned this event from a weaker point to a very deep event. Michel DeCarolis has developed into a national-level swimmer, while young swimmers William Farr, Spencer Peterson, John Baque and Drew Bowles will make this a strong event for the team. IM In the 200 IM, Andrew Cole and Michel DeCarolis will be expected to lead the team. Nick Philpot will compete in the 400 IM along with Seamus Alger and Will Leonhart. Diving In the diving discipline, Utah returns Andrew Jones and Damien Brown. Both Jones and Brown were conference fi nalists and will be accompanied by freshman Hollis Leja SWIMMING & DIVING 11

22 Facilities Ute Natatorium The University of Utah men s and women s swimming and diving teams compete at one of the premiere venues in the Mountain West Conference. The fan-friendly Ute Natatorium is situated in the heart of Utah s competition sites. It was built in 1968 and has been the home of numerous championship events, including the 1970 NCAA Championship Meet. Ute Natatorium offers everything a collegiate swimmer needs to reach the pinnacle of their performance. It contains two pools, a six-lane, 25-yard training pool, and an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool. The newly refurbished 20x15 diving well reaches a depth of 16 feet and offers two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards. While the 37-year-old facility has been a fi xture on campus, it received a new look in The renovations included an $800,000 improvement to the diving well. The face-lift not only extended the depth of the diving well but added a new gutter system that brings the water level up to the deck. There are concrete platforms for both the 1- and 3-meter boards with a uniquely designed 3-meter that adds to the home-team atmosphere... a Block U-shaped platform with boards extending from the top of both sides. There are also plans to add a 5-meter platform at a later date. In addition to the pools, the team benefi tted from additions and renovations to its locker rooms. The locker rooms received a $100,000 improvement. The men s locker room was separated in order to create locker rooms for both the men s and women s teams. It also features clubhouse-sized lockers and an expanded team meeting lounge. Dee Glen Smith Center Utah swimming and diving athletes benefi t from the 7,500-squarefoot, state-of-the-art weight room located in the Dee Glen Smith Center. The workout facility boasts 12 Olympic platforms, each with its own selfcontained power rack/multi-purpose lifting station. There are fi ve strength and conditioning coaches on staff to ensure that each and every student-athlete is performing at their peak. The program is under the direction of Doug Elisaia while the cross country and track and fi eld teams works directly with Annette Poulton, assistant director of strength and conditioning. The entire sports medicine staff is overseen by director Bill Bean and associate director Deb Willardson. They both have more than 25 years of experience at the University of Utah. The other three full-time assistants on staff in the sports medicine department are Tom Iriye, Trevor Jameson and Bob Toth. 22 UNIVERSITY OF UTAH

23 Academics Campus Life University of Utah students live in a magnifi cent mountain setting in Heritage Commons a living-learning community of 3,500 students that opened in Heritage Commons received world-wide acclaim in 2002 when it served as the Athletes Village during the XIX Olympic Winter and Paralympic Games, hosted by Salt Lake City. The residential center is the heart of campus activity and exudes a vibrant, energetic college town atmosphere. Game and exercise rooms, computer labs, Internet connections in every room, and a dining room that is open all day and serves up freshly cooked meals on request are some of the reasons behind the School of the Year award delivered by the Intermountain Affi liate of College and University Residence Halls. Residence hall students also thrive academically at Utah: More than half of them maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Situated in historic Fort Douglas at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon and located on 70 acres of land, the expansive 912,000 square foot residential complex boasts picturesque views of Salt Lake City and the surrounding mountain ranges. Heritage Commons consists of 21 buildings 20 residential and one for dining and support services. Eight of the buildings are apartment style, with 235 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. First-year students live in Gateway Heights, a hall with furnished, double semi-suites, an advanced telecommunications system (voice, video and data), an ethernet connection to the U. student computer system, cable TV connections, a large community lounge, study rooms and indoor bike storage. Each fl oor has a kitchenette. Chapel Glen is home to both fi rst-year students and upperclassmen and offers the same amenities as Gateway Heights, along with a fi tness area. Sage Point is reserved for upper division students and has single, double and deluxe suites. Sage Point also has computer and technology labs and an international area. The student in student-athlete got a big boost in spring 2001 when the Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. Family Athletics Academic Center opened on the U. campus. Designed solely to accommodate the U. s varsity student-athletes, the Burbidge Center is without peer in terms of aesthetics, technology and academic service. The 11,000 square foot facility is already a campus landmark, with its sweeping fl oor to ceiling, curved glass wall on the two-story north side. Its location is ideal for the population it serves: Situated between the U. Natatorium and the Huntsman Center, the Burbidge Center is central to Utah s classrooms and athletic venues. The full-service academic facility, utilized by all 18 varsity Utah ath- letic teams, was underwritten by a generous $2 million gift from the Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. family. The center consolidated Utah s athletic-academic efforts, both in terms of computer labs and study space, and academic counseling. The upper level also provides a social gathering place for the student-athletes. The mission of the Burbidge Family Athletics Academic Center is to provide an integrated learning environment that will enhance the academic and personal development of all student-athletes. The objec- tive is to accommodate the diverse needs and schedules of Utah s student-athletes through a wide range of individual and group support services, computer technologies and independent study opportunities. Director of Student-Athlete Support Services Mary Bowman, Director of Athletic Relations Manny Hendrix and Academic Services are housed in the building, as is the award winning NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Burbidge Center Facts Dedicated May 18, ,000 square feet Lab with 25 computers Student-Athlete Lounge Pop-in computers Academic advising offi ces About the University Life Skills/Career Center Tutoring rooms Large study table area Multipurpose room Staff conference room Benchmark Plaza is an apartment complex allocated for single students who have earned 60-plus credit hours. Shoreline Ridge, which offers both furnished and unfurnished apartment units, is reserved for students with families and single graduate students. The Chase N. Peterson Heritage Center, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during peak demand periods, is the hub of activity in the student housing village. It contains a central dining facility that seats 600, a convenience store, computer and technology labs, fi tness and game rooms, four multipurpose rooms, a mail center and more. The student village also contains a University Bookstore branch, University Copy Center and the University Guest House, an on-campus hotel. Transportation is another benefi t of Heritage Commons. A U of U parking permit allows residents to park close to their hall, but a car is not necessary. Free campus shuttles run every 10 minutes and the Utah Transit Authority and light rail (TRAX), free to U. students, combine to traverse 21 routes to and from campus. TRAX extends to downtown Salt Lake and outlying areas as well. The residence halls are also easily accessible to main campus by foot and are connected via the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge. 24 About the University University of Utah The University of Utah, a hub for higher education from the Rockies to the Sierras, boasts an academic reputation that is rivaled only by its breathtaking location. The 1,500-acre campus, nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, is a beautiful collage of native and exotic trees, fountains, flowering malls and pedestrian walkways. The University of Utah is one of only 88 universities in the United States classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Research I university defined by its full range of undergraduate programs, a commitment to graduate education and a high priority to research. Utah is categorized as RU/VH (Very High Research Activity) by the Carnegie Foundation. The U. also offers a lively residential living experience in beautiful Heritage Commons, a multi-purpose residence complex located in historic Fort Douglas on the eastern edge of campus. Outside the classroom, Utah students enjoy unparalleled outdoor diversions, from skiing and snowboarding at any of eight worldclass resorts in nearby canyons, to backpacking, mountain biking, fly fishing and river running. The U. s location in the largest city in the Intermountain West also provides a metropolitan charm. Salt Lake is home to professional symphony, ballet, modern dance, opera and theater companies, as well as five professional sports teams. The University offers 77 majors, 80 minors and certificates, and 95 graduate majors. It draws its 29,000-plus student population Salt Lake City Salt Lake City, home to the University of Utah, combines the amenities of a major metropolitan area with beautiful natural surroundings. With 181,743 residents, Salt Lake City is the largest city in the state and its metro population of 1,333,914 ranks 36th in the nation. However, Salt Lake City maintains the charm of a small western city. Scenery, location, and cultural and recreational opportunities help Salt Lake draw major events like the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. One of the most beautiful metropolitan areas in the world, Salt Lake City offers majestic views in all directions. To the east are the 11,500-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountains, which are part of the Rocky Mountain range. To the west soar the Oquirrh Mountains. In between is the Great Salt Lake which at a size of 48 miles wide and 90 miles long ranks as the world s second largest saltwater 24 from all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries. Founded in 1850, the U. has established itself as an international center for medical and engineering research. Research Park, which is located on 320 acres adjacent to the campus, includes the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics and the Moran Eye Center. More genes with diseases have been identified by researchers at the University of Utah than any other place in the world. Utah is also a hub in the computer world. The Center for High Performance Computing links the U. to major aerospace industries, high-tech manufacturers and research companies. It manages one of the three most successful technology parks in the U.S., with more than 40 high-tech companies created by University faculty. The University of Utah has the only medical, social work, architecture and pharmacy schools in a multi-state area. lake and the largest lake in the western United States. National and international business magazines have described Salt Lake City s economy as visionary, vibrant and vigorous. City and State, which is published for local government officials, ranked Salt Lake No. 1 among 195 cities in terms of economic strength. Salt Lake is the financial, educational, distribution, warehousing, commercial, cultural and communications hub of the Intermountain region. It is the center to world-renowned medical and technological industries. Tourism is also a huge economic boon to the state, with the travel and tourism-related industries providing 112,000 jobs. In 2005, 17.5 million visitors traveled to Utah and spent almost $5 billion. Eight world-class ski resorts are located less than 40 miles from downtown Salt Lake. Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City. Downtown is home to art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. Professional sports are big in Salt Lake City and include the Utah Jazz of the NBA and the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League. Other pro franchises in the city are the Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball), the Utah Grizzlies (hockey) and Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer). Recreational opportunities abound and 10 national parks are a day s drive from Salt Lake City. Fly fishing, backpacking, mountain biking and river running are a part of life in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City s charms are easily accessible even to those from out of state. Salt Lake International Airport is situated within a two and a half-hour flight of half of the United States population. There are over 800 scheduled daily flights serving more than 100 cities with non-stop flights. The airport is located just 15 minutes from the University of Utah. UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
