2 The University of Utah men s and women s swimming and diving teams compete at one of the premiere venues in the Mountain West Conference. The fan-friendly Ute Natatorium is situated in the heart of Utah s competition sites. It was built in 1968 and has been the home of numerous championship events, including the 1970 NCAA Championship Meet. Ute Natatorium offers everything a collegiate swimmer or diver needs to reach the pinnacle of their performance. It contains three pools, a six-lane, 25-yard training pool, an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool and the newly refurbished 20x15 diving well, which reaches a depth of 16 feet and offers two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards. While the 39-year-old facility has been a fixture on campus, it received a new look in The renovations included an $800,000 improvement to the diving well. The facelift not only extended the depth of the diving well but added a new gutter system that brings the water level up to the deck. There are concrete platforms for both the 1- and 3-meter boards with a uniquely designed 3-meter that adds to the home-team atmosphere, a block U-shaped platform with boards extending from the top of both sides. In addition to the pools, the team benefits from additions and renovations to its locker rooms. The locker rooms received a $100,000 improvement. The men s locker room was separated in order to create locker rooms for both the men s and women s teams. It also features clubhouse-sized lockers and an expanded team meeting lounge. Ute Natatorium

6 University of Utah History/Records Meet the Utes Season Outlook Coaching Staff The University of Utah swimming & diving team enters this season with heightened expectations after a successful campaign that saw the Utes set five new Mountain West Conference records and 10 school records. Nine Utah swimmers were named to the All-MWC team, three divers qualified for the postseason and one swimmer earned All-American status. Even with all that success, the Utes know they still have a lot more to accomplish in the future. This year we re going to make sure we enjoy what we are doing, said Utah head coach Greg Winslow. We re going to work hard, but we ll have fun doing it. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves last season. Our goal was always to win the MWC championship. This season we are going to focus on ourselves and making ourselves better, then letting the rest take care of itself, said Winslow. This year, we re taking on the bigger aspect of team, rather than individual effort. We have the experience and now we are going to put it all together. The Utes will be one of the top programs in the conference this season. Of the 10 athletes from Utah named to the All-MWC team last season, five are returning. This group includes Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.), who set the Utah school record in the 200 IM (1:59.18) and currently has times in the all-time top-10 in the MWC in the 200 IM and 100 and 200 fly. Also returning for the Utes will be Maiya Otsuka (Littleton, Colo.), Utah s current 200 breast record holder (2:17.25). Annie VanLeeuwen (West Valley City, Utah) was named to the All-MWC team for the 100 breast and her part in the 200, 400, 800 free relay teams and the 400 medley relay team. Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) was also named to the All-MWC team in the 50,100 and 200 free and Kwan Ling Yu (Yuen Long, Hong Kong) is the current MWC platform dive champion. In addition to those returners, the Utes have six incoming freshmen who look to make an immediate impact for the team this season. We are going to be deeper than in years past, said Winslow. We are still a young team though, with only three seniors this year. That makes for an interesting, but exciting, upcoming future for our team. Freestyle Edge will lead the Utes in the sprint freestyle events, gaining help from fellow junior Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah). VanLeeuwen will also be a force in both the sprint and some distance events. Annie [VanLeeuwen] can be scary good, said Winslow. Kristina [Evans] is also getting things to click in the water. We ll count on both to step up this year. Joining the Utes this season in the sprint freestyle will be Chardonnay Biter-Mundt (Napa, Calif.), Rene Woodmencey (Jackson Hole, Wyo.), and Danielle Caldwell (Glendale, Ariz.). The freshmen class comes to Utah with plenty of recognition: Caldwell was named a high school All-America in the 50, 100 and 200 free her junior year of high school. Biter-Mundt competing in Junior Nationals and was named California s Most Valuable Swimmer. Woodmencey was named Wyoming s Swimmer of the Year in 2007 and All three women will add depth to the already strong sprint events. The distance events will be bolstered by the addition of Caldwell, who was All-America in the 500 free both her junior and senior year as well as Kayla Buck (Folsom, Calif.). [Buck and Caldwell] will help us fill in at the distance free after the loss of some of our seniors, said Winslow. Butterfly Caron currently holds the second-best times in the fly events in Utah school history and the fourth-best time in MWC history. Incoming freshman Sarah Boylen (South Bend, Ind.) will be a big asset for the Utes. Boylen comes as the two-time Indiana State Champion in the 100 fly, with the 10th-fastest time in Indiana high school history. Boylen also competed at the Speedo Junior Nationals, placing 22nd overall in the 100 fly. Breaststroke A pair of upperclassmen will bring experience and maturity in the event for the Utes. Otsuka will be the headliner for the Utes in the breast events after setting the Utah school record in the 200 breast in VanLeeuwen will also help out, having experience on the national competitive stage after taking part in the US National Qualifying meet during the summer. Backstroke Sophomore Sarah Cox (Scottsdale, Ariz.) will lead the Utes in the back events. Sarah has gotten a lot stronger this summer, said Winslow. Sarah [Boylen] will also be a strength for the team. Senior Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.) will join Boylen and Cox in the event. Gunderson will continue to be a huge asset for the Utes in both the individual back events as well as in the relay medley events, where she helped Utah finish first in the 200 medley relay at the Princeton Invitational last season. IM Caron, who holds the current Utah 200 IM record and the second-best time in MWC history, will return for the Utes and looks to be one of the best IM swimmers in the conference. Otsuka will also be competing in the event for the Utes, where she finished in the top 10 in the 400 IM at the MWC Championships. Diving Ellis Walters (Indianapolis, Ind.) comes to Utah with international diving experience after earning medals at the U.S. Junior Pan-America Diving competition and earning the silver and bronze medals at U.S. Junior Nationals. Yu is also returning for the Utes, making the diving squad the most talented the team has had in years. Ellis Walters has the capability to become one of the greatest divers in Utah history, said Winslow. Schedule The Utes will have as tough of a schedule as they have ever had, starting off the season by traveling to face Denver on Oct. 24. Afterwards, the Utes will host UNLV on Oct. 30 and Arizona State on Oct. 31. UNLV looks to be one of the top teams in the conference this season after finishing in second overall at the MWC Championships last February. Arizona State will among the toughest teams the Utes will compete against, returning two NCAA qualifiers and one Olympic diving finalist this season. The Utes will also travel to Long Beach, Calif. in November to compete in the Nike Cup hosted by UC Irvine. They will have big home meets against Colorado State, one of two teams that defeated the women in dual meet format, on Jan. 9, TCU on Jan. 15 and San Diego State on Jan. 16 before going on the road to face conference rivals Wyoming, and Air Force. The Utes will finish their season against rival BYU in Provo on Feb. 4 and then will begin preparing for the MWC Championships in Oklahoma City Feb [Caron] can win anything she wants to this season. We re going to be using her in a lot of events, said Winslow. Sarah Boylen will also help keep the fly event strong for us. Hannah Caron owns the Utah school record in the 200 IM. 4 Women s Outlook

7 The Utah men s swimming and diving team is heading into the season with a renewed vision of what they want to accomplish in the future. Of course, every year we are aiming to win the Mountain West Conference championship, Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. This year, though, we are trying some new things. It s like climbing a mountain. Every once in a while, one needs to make camp and readjust. The Utah men s team ended its season in sixth place at the MWC Championships, and features three returning swimmers named to the all-mwc team last season. Senior John Baque (Olympia, Wash.) was named to the all-conference team after a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and a sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomores Major Robinson (Missoula, Mont.) and Eric Murray (Woodstock, Ga.) were also honored individually. Robinson was named to the allconference team after a third-place finish in the 200 back. Murray was honored twice, once after a second-place finish in the 400 IM and for his part on the 800 free relay team that finished third at the MWC Championships. Overall, the Utes saw vast improvement over the course of the season, getting their first win against Air Force and narrowly falling to Wyoming and BYU. The Utah men s team lost five seniors from last season s team, including 1000 and 1650 free school record holder Adam Oliver. The experience and leadership they brought to the team was invaluable, said Winslow. The team is solid this year, though. Any losses that we had are being more than made up by our incoming freshmen. The Utes will add 11 freshmen to their roster, with 10 coming to Utah as high school All-Americans and one from the Swedish Junior National team. The freshmen class looks to be an impressive group for the Utes, capable of breaking records in the 100 fly and even Oliver s 1000 free record. It s going to be a whole new experience for the Utah men s swimming and diving team this season, Winslow said. It s going to be like a whole new program. Freestyle Returning for the Utes in the distance freestyle events will be Murray, along with fellow sophomore Eric Bonicelli (Overland Park, Kan.) and junior Rick Mason (Corvallis, Ore.). Adding to Utah s list of weapons in these events are freshmen Ryan Hansen (Schroeder, Wisc.) and Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.). Michaels currently has a personal record of 9:13.86 in the 1000 free, topping the current Utah school record. With the guys that we already have, plus the incoming freshmen, we are going to be a scary team in the distance free events, said Winslow. The incoming freshmen will also be a big asset in the sprint free events. Jordan Spoerri (West Jordan, Utah), Bjorn Gunnarrson (Norrkoping, Sweden) and Karson Applin (Houston, Texas) will all make an immediate impact. Gunnarrson has been on the Sweden Junior National team and Applin was the 100 breaststroke champion at the USA Swimming Sectionals last summer. Butterfly The fly event should be much improved event for the Utes. Returning for the Utes will be Will Leonhart (Fruita, Colo.), Luke Donohue (Portland, Ore.) and Bonicelli. Will [Leonhart] and Luke [Donohue] have both been impressive in summer workouts, said Winslow. They have continued to progress since the end of last season and we look to them to be an asset this season. Adding to the returners is Tudor Florea (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who currently has one of the faster times in the 100 fly for the Utes at in the event. Breaststroke Baque, who spent last summer competing at the Conoco Phillips National Championships, will be the lead swimmer for the Utes in the breast events. He currently owns the best time in school history in the 200 breast and was on the All-MWC team for both breast events. Adding strength the event will be returning junior Garrett Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.), who redshirted during the season. Backstroke As a freshman, Robinson finished third in the 200 back at the MWC Championships, and earned all-mwc team honors. This year, Robinson looks to only get better. We can count on [Robinson] for his sheer athletic talent, says Winslow. We ll see him have another great season. Joining Robinson in the event will be Andy Lamb (Raleigh, N.C.), who was a finalist at the USA Junior Nationals in the event and looks to make an immediate impact for the Utes this year. IM Murray is another sophomore returning to the Utes who earned all-mwc honors as a freshman for his second-place finish in the 400 IM at the MWC Championships. Eric is a driven athlete who is exciting to work with every day, Winslow said. His work either and attention to detail is going to ensure that he will surpass the great freshman campaign he had last year. Diving Joining Michael Glasson (Price, Utah) on the boards will be incoming freshman Brandon Stoppelmoor (Olathe, Kan.), who earned high school All-American recognition and brings more experience to the event for the Utes. Schedule The Utah men s swimming and diving team s schedule looks to be as tough as ever. The Utes will have a challenging month in October, heading to the University of Denver on Oct. 24 before hosting conference rival UNLV on Oct. 30 as well as Pacific-10 Conference power Arizona State on Oct. 31. Utah will head to Long Beach, Calif. for the Nike Cup before winter break and take on the rest of the MWC in January before competing against BYU in Provo Feb. 4. Senior John Baque owns the Utah school record in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1: Freshman Karson Applin won the 100 breaststroke at the 2009 USA Swimming Sectional meet. It was opened in the fall of 1999 and was funded by a $225 million pledge from Utah businessman Jon M. Huntsman. T he University of Utah is a hub for higher education from the Rockies to the Sierras and boasts an academic reputation that is rivaled only by its breathtaking vistas. To the east rise the 11,500 foot, snow-capped peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. To the west, the Great Salt Lake shimmers beneath the Oquirrh Mountains. The 1,500-acre campus, nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, is a beautiful collage of native and exotic trees, fountains, flowering malls and pedestrian walkways. Founded in 1850, the University offers 72 undergraduate majors, 70 minors and certificates, 40 teaching majors and minors, and 95 graduate majors. Utah draws its 28,000-plus student population from all 50 states and 114 foreign countries. Utah ranks among the top 35 public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. On Oct. 8, 2007, University of Utah geneticist Mario R. Capecchi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his work on gene targeting. Scientists from the University of Utah have identified more genes with diseases than anywhere else in the world. Capecchi is one of many acclaimed faculty members. The U. ranks 30th in significant awards to faculty among the nation s public research universities. Utah Swimming and Diving Research Park, which is located on 320 acres adjacent to the campus, houses 41 companies and 71 university departments. Some of the more prominent residents of Research Park are the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics, the Moran Eye Center and the Brain Institute. 25 U niversity of Utah residence hall students live in a magnificent mountain setting. Heritage Commons, a living-learning community of 2,500 students that opened in 2000, received world-wide acclaim when it served as the Athletes Village during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The residential center is the heart of campus activity and exudes a vibrant, energetic college town atmosphere. Game and exercise rooms, computer labs, Internet connections, cable TV and HBO in every room, and a dining room that is open all day and serves up freshly cooked meals on request are some of the reasons behind the School of the Year award delivered by the Intermountain Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls. Residence hall students also thrive academically at Utah: More than half of them maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Situated in historic Fort Douglas at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon and located on 70 acres of land, the expansive 912,000 square foot residential complex boasts Heritage Commons 912,000 square foot complex 20 residential buildings and one for dining and support services Eight apartment-style buildings Advanced telecommunications system (voice, video and data), ethernet connections, cable TV, community lounge, study rooms and indoor bike storage Chase N. Heritage Commons consists of 21 buildings 20 residential and one for dining and support services. Eight of the buildings are apartment style, with 235 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. First-year students live in Gateway Heights, a hall with furnished, double semi-suites, an advanced telecommunications system (voice, video and data), an ethernet connection to the U. student computer system, cable TV connections, a large community lounge, study rooms and indoor bike storage. Each floor has a kitchenette. Chapel Glen is home to both first-year students and upperclassmen and offers the same amenities as Gateway Heights, along with a fitness area. Sage Point is reserved for upper division students and has single, double and deluxe suites. Sage Point also has computer and technology labs and an international area. Benchmark Plaza is an apartment complex allocated for single students who have earned 60-plus credit hours. Shoreline Ridge, which offers both furnished and unfurnished apartment units, is reserved for students with families and single graduate students. The Chase N. Peterson Heritage Center, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during peak demand periods, is the hub of activity in the student housing village. It contains a central dining facility that seats 600, a convenience store, computer and technology labs, fitness and game rooms, four multipurpose rooms, a mail center and more. The student village also contains a University Bookstore branch, University Copy Center and the University Guest House, an on-campus hotel. Transportation is another benefit of Heritage Commons. A U of U parking permit allows residents to park close to their hall, but a car is not necessary. Free campus shuttles run every 10 minutes and the Utah Transit Authority and light rail (TRAX), free to U. students, combine to traverse 21 routes to and from campus. TRAX extends to downtown Salt Lake and outlying areas as well. The residence halls are also easily accessible to main campus by foot and are connected via the George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge.
