2 UTE NATATORIUM UTAH SWIMMING & DIVING The University of Utah men s and women s swimming and diving teams compete at one of the premiere venues in the Mountain West Conference. The fan-friendly Ute Natatorium is situated in the heart of Utah s competition sites. It was built in 1968 and has been the home of numerous championship events, including the 1970 NCAA Championship Meet. Ute Natatorium offers everything a collegiate swimmer needs to reach the pinnacle of their performance. It contains three pools, a six-lane, 25-yard training pool, an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool and the newly refurbished 20x15 diving well, which reaches a depth of 16 feet and offers two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards. While the 38-year-old facility has been a fixture on campus, it received a new look in The renovations included an $800,000 improvement to the diving well. The facelift not only extended the depth of the diving well but added a new gutter system that brings the water level up to the deck. There are concrete platforms for both the 1- and 3-meter boards with a uniquely designed 3-meter that adds to the home-team atmosphere, a block U-shaped platform with boards extending from the top of both sides. In addition to the pools, the team benefits from additions and renovations to its locker rooms. The locker rooms received a $100,000 improvement. The men s locker room was separated in order to create locker rooms for both the men s and women s teams. It also features clubhousesized lockers and an expanded team meeting lounge.

6 UTAH SWIMMING & DIVING WOMEN S OUTLOOK The University of Utah women s swimming and diving team is coming into the season determined to become one of the strongest teams in the conference. With eight returning swimmers that were on the All-Mountain West Conference team last season as well as a strong group of new recruits, the women look to carve out a name for themselves in the MWC as well as across the country. The Utes return this year after a successful season in Ending last season 6-5 overall and 5-3 in conference matchups, the women overcame a rough beginning to the MWC Championships and ended third overall. This year, they hope to build on the success of last year and earn a conference championship. BYU has been the conference champion seven years in a row, Winslow said. We would like to see someone wearing Crimson winning the title this season. In his second year as Utah s head coach, Winslow has his sights set high. With the 13th best recruiting class in the country as well as the aforementioned returners, Winslow is expecting his team to enter into the country s swimming elite and gain a national ranking. Our goal this year is to really break into the national scene, Winslow said. We are looking to be a top-20 school nationally. To achieve this goal of becoming a top-20 team, Winslow is going across the country to compete against non-conference foes to challenge the Utes. The first meet of the season against Washington on Oct. 3 starts the season against one of the best teams in the country. The Huskies, who finished 12th at the NCAA Championships last season and are ranked 24th in preseason polls, are the type of team Winslow and the Utes need to defeat to prove themselves. He is also taking his team to the Princeton Invitational, Dec. 5-7, where Princeton (who finished 13th last year at the NCAA Championships) and Florida (who is ranked third in the preseason polls) will be competing. The Utes are not looking past their conference opponents, either. UNLV and Wyoming are very competitive programs in our conference. You can always count on those two teams being very well coached, Winslow said. The team will travel to Las Vegas to compete against UNLV, Nov. 15, and Wyoming will come to Salt Lake City on Jan. 23. The meet against BYU, which may decide the MWC regular-season champion, will be held at Ute Natatorium on Feb. 6. Overall, the team may become one of the strongest Utah has had in the last couple years. Also, with only three seniors and a very talented group of freshman, the Utes look to set a precedent for years to come. We are looking to build off of last year and take a step forward to redefine the program, Winslow said. With four women returning from the top nine of last year s MWC Championships, the Utes will be very strong in the freestyle events. Leading the team will be Natalie Edge. Edge, a sophomore who ended last year with a conference championship in the 100 free as well as a second-place 200 free finish and was fifth in the 50 free. Sophomore Kristina Evans, senior Shannon McQueen, and junior Annie VanLeeuwen were all part of the university record-setting 800 free relay team last year. They finished second overall in the conference and look to improve this season. A strong relay team also returns in the 400 free with Edge, McQueen, VanLeeuwen and Jennifer Fredsall returning. Butterfly Utah will boast some of the top swimmers in the nation in the butterfly event. Led by Fredsall and junior Beth Gunderson, the fly may be the strongest event for the Utes. Fredsall returns as the MWC champion in the 100 fly, setting a new school record in the event. Fredsall also finished third overall at the conference championships in the 200 fly. Gunderson qualified for the Olympic Trials last summer in the 100 fly, and will join incoming freshmen Whitney Lopus and Hannah Caron, who both qualified for the Olympic Trials. Lopus ranked second in high school in the nation in the 100 fly and Caron is not far behind, according to Winslow. Jen Fredsall, our conference record holder, has possibly the fourth-fastest time on our team, Winslow said. Backstroke McQueen will be leading the team in the backstoke events this year. Named to the all-conference team for the 100 and 200 back, McQueen will be helped by Gunderson, a fellow all-conference team member. Freshman Sarah Cox will also be a big asset. Our diamond in the rough is definitely Sarah Cox. I m expecting big things from her, Winslow said. Breaststroke Lauren Hewson and Ali Siggard are both looking to make a big impact for the Utes this year. Both are freshman and come to Utah with individual state championships in high school. Winslow is expecting great things from Hewson and Siggard. Our freshman class is very dynamic and has the potential to break every single school record this year, Winslow said. Individual Medley The IM events look to be very strong this year as well. Lopus and Cox are expected to contribute alongside returning sophomore Maiya Otuska, who earned all-conference honors last year in the 200 and 400 IM events. Diving Utah will be looking to achieve a lot in the diving events this year. Kelsey Patterson, a former Utah diver who holds four school diving records, plans on helping divers Kwan Ling Yu and Anna Braszkiewicz become more consistent. Both were recognized on the all-conference team, Yu for platform diving and Braszkiewicz for the 3-meter dive and qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals. Jennifer Fredsall established a new Utah record in the 100 fly (54.07) at last season s MWC Championships UTAH SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE

7 MEN S OUTLOOK UTAH SWIMMING & DIVING The University of Utah men s swimming and diving team is looking forward to a new season with a goal to be at the top of the conference and eventually a top team in the nation. The Utes are willing to work hard to reach their goals. Utah s team will consist of many returning swimmers from last year and a very talented group of freshmen. These guys are going to really surprise a lot of people in the conference, head coach Greg Winslow said. The new group of swimmers are from all over the country: Atlanta, Missoula, Mont., and Kansas City, Mo. [What brings them here is] everything Utah has to offer, Winslow said. It s a beautiful place, and the promise of starting something fresh here is exciting to recruits and it s fun to get in on the ground floor and build toward goals of being nationally ranked. They have bought that vision of the program. Backstroke The backstroke event will welcome a boost from the incoming recruits as well. Returning for the events will be Vlas Lezin, who took first place against Arizona State last season. Contributing to the team will be freshman Major Robinson. [Major] will really add a lot to our backstrokes, Winslow said. He is going to surprise the conference with not only size and stature, but really his ability to race. Individual Medley Utah is looking to take advantage of its athletic endurance in the IM, as the event appears to be a particular strength for the team. Leading the way will be DeCarolis and Baque, with Peterson competing alongside Simon Oberholzer, a transfer student coming to Utah from Switzerland. The Utes are looking to make up for disappointments last year and earn victories. Utah will have plenty of chances this season to show how they have improved. To start the season, the Utes head up to Boise, Idaho to take on Washington and Boise State, Oct Then the Utes travel to the Princeton Invitational in December to compete against ranked opponents, including Florida. In MWC competition, the Utes are looking to even the score at TCU on Jan. 9 and against Air Force at home on Jan. 24. The Utes will have the home pool advantage in their Feb. 6 meet against BYU. Before competing against BYU, we are going to have to take some steps in that direction [this season], Winslow said. We re really solid in the tougher events. Our guys are really tough in any aerobic race whatsoever. The team will be counting on its toughness to pull off some upsets and surprise people. Freestyle Senior team captains Marco Ferraro and George Evans will head up the freestyle events. The duo comes back with a new school record under their belt in the 800 free relay, as well as all-conference honors. They will be joined by former high school All-American freshman, Eric Bonnicelli. After redshirting last season, Michel DeCarolis returns to the Ute lineup in the breastroke and individual medley events. Freestyle Butterfly The fly events for Utah will be headed up by the incoming freshmen. Bonnicelli will be swimming the fly events, as well as fellow high school All-American, Eric Murray. Chase Jackson also comes to Utah as a freshman looking to continue his winning form from high school, where he helped his team earn two Utah state championships at Odgen High School in Utah. Breaststroke Our key event and probably our biggest strength is in the breaststroke, Winslow said. Returning to the team to add strength in the event is junior John Baque, who qualified for the Olympic Trials this summer, and Swiss National team member Michel DeCarolis. DeCarolis had to redshirt last year because of a rib injury and is expected to have an impact this year as one of the top performers in the conference. DeCarolis and Baque will be helped in competition from junior Spencer Peterson, who was named to the all-conference team in the 200 breaststroke last year. Marco Ferraro earned All-MWC recognition as a member of Utah s school-record setting 800 free relay last season. W W W. U T A H U T E S. C O M 5
