It s that time of year again COHO s annual pumpkin carving contest i is here along with Volunteer spots now open for Halloween Hoopla. More info on both events can be found in this COHO Newscream newsletter! Congratulations to Leo Popko, from our 10&U Red group. At the Blue Devil dual meet, on September 30th, Leo broke 3 8&U COHO club records. Leo broke the 25 free record from 1988, the 25 breaststroke record from 1979, and the 25 fly record from 1978! This was Leo s last meet as an 8&U and he is now turning 9 for the next meet. The breaststroke and fly records belonged to William Merkle. The free record belonged to Billy Dim

IS YOUR SWIMMER SCARED? (Being nervous at swim meets) Being nervous at swim meets (as a swimmer or parent), is inevitable.

What makes a good athlete is learning to deal with those mistakes. Missing a flip turn in one race, and bouncing back for the next race is what makes good swimmers stand out.

The swimmers are taught to deal with the adversity and allow themselves to be uncomfortable.

What a parent will often do, since we want to make sure our children are always safe and happy, is stand in front of their swimmers and brush away those obstacles. In turn, what do the coaches do?

2 IS YOUR SWIMMER SCARED? (Being nervous at swim meets) Being nervous at swim meets (as a swimmer or parent), is inevitable. All athletes get nervous and sometimes feel what they perceive as fear when in a competition. From minnows to Olympic swimmers, all swimmers (all athletes) make mistakes. What makes a good athlete is learning to deal with those mistakes. Missing a flip turn in one race, and bouncing back for the next race is what makes good swimmers stand out. Learning to refocus on the most important race the next one is what matters. Coaches have a job of putting swimmer in a situation that will lead to making mistakes. The swimmers are taught to deal with the adversity and allow themselves to be uncomfortable. What coaches do is put in front of the swimmers physical and mental obstacles that the swimmers learn to maneuver around (and sometimes straight through). What a parent will often do, since we want to make sure our children are always safe and happy, is stand in front of their swimmers and brush away those obstacles. In turn, what do the coaches do? Throw more obstacles out there for the swimmers to overcome. While the coaches do not want swimmers afraid, or scared, we want them not to fear being uncomfortable in difficult situations. Here is an actual example of a situation swimmers can be put in by coaches. Sometimes swimmers are given what we call a failure set. Something so challenging that many of them will struggle or not be able to complete. A set of 8 x 200 s on an interval (rest) that is just a bit out of their comfort zone. How they learn to deal with the adversity of the swimming set will help them learn to deal with the adversity of the last 25 yards, on the last race of a 3 day swim meet. Swimmers must practice to move on from these situations, and mistakes they may make, quickly and often. As most good programs will do, we try to instill in the swimmers to have a mistake ritual, a way to learn and move on from adversity. Parents need to learn that the only way swimmers will get better is if they do not feel pressure to be perfect all the time, and that being scared or nervous is normal. As we tell them at swim meets; everyone gets disqualified at some point- it will happen, so don t be afraid of it! When parents and swimmers learn that it is ok to make mistakes, and to be scared is ok, positive growth happens.

We need volunteers to hand out prizes, help retrieve bean bags, and reset the games between players. Several adult DFPD Staff members (including Coach Nancy, Coach Jacob and Coach Jeff) will be on site to supervise the swimmers.
