For your convenience, the pool rules are printed on pages 4 and 5 of the Defender. Please make sure to take a moment to review them. The following is some additional information regarding the pool. If you received your electronic facilities pass (pool pass) last year, you do not need to do anything to obtain a new pass. The same pass will be used every year. If you have lost or misplaced your pass, and you need to obtain a new one, the cost is $25. If you did not receive a pass last year, and still need one, you can come by the office to have your picture taken. Everyone 5 years of age or older will need a facilities pass with a picture. Children under the age of five will be issued a card with no photograph. Passes for new individuals cost $5. Replacement cards cost $25. Payment can only be accepted by check. Staff will be available with altered office hours from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 10, to prepare facility passes. Passes may only be obtained in the office from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment. The pool pass form can be found on page 9 of the Defender. Rental Units Renters are required to obtain authorization from the owner of the Wellington home prior to registering for the pool. Renters will need a completed Tenant Designation Form signed by the owner and a completed pool registration form before facility passes will be issued. The Tenant Designation Form is available at the on-site office. Continued on page 8 Covenants Corner By: Marcy Janet, Covenants Coordinator Once again, we would like to thank all of the residents who have responded to the inspection letters received and made correction in such a timely manner. One of the most notable fixes is the removal of trash cans that have been stored in front of homes. What a big difference it makes when driving throughout the community. Keep up the good work. On the subject of trash Please do not place your trash cans and bags on the common areas. Trash should be in the front of your home, at the appropriate time and pick-up days. Aside from the negative visual impact, trash cans and bags piled around fire hydrants is a potential safety hazard. Remember to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrian traffic. Please use a trash can to keep your trash from blowing around the neighborhood and secure items in your recycling bins. With the approach of warmer weather, residents are starting to plant and begin the grass cutting cycle. City residents may leave their grass, leaves, branches, bush and garden trimmings road side for collection. Please contact the City of Manassas Trash Hot Line at for questions regarding yard waste. Please do not use plastic bags for yard waste collection. They will not be collected. Here are a few suggestions to keep violation notices from appearing in your mail box. Keep the grass weed free and maintained at a height no greater than 6 inches. Keep trash and trash cans, yard tools, etc, stored out of sight. Power wash mold and mildew off siding, decks, fences and front porches. 4 Page Pool Rules 1. The Association is represented by the managers and lifeguards, who have been instructed in the rules of the pool. Any conflicts shall be addressed with the pool manager or assistant manager ONLY, who will bring the issue to the Association if it cannot be satisfactorily resolved. 2. Certified lifeguards will be on duty at all times the pool is open. They have the authority to use their discretion to enforce the rules to maintain a safe and healthy environment. The manager is in charge of the pool and is there for the protection of persons using the pool. The manager has the authority to order the removal from the pool of anyone for infractions of the rules or when safety is threatened. When such removal from the pool occurs, the pool manager will forward a copy of the incident report to the Association s designated representative who will note the removal in that person s facilities access records. Once three such removals are noted in the access records, the holder of the pass will be denied access to the pool. The holder of the pass must appear before the Board of Directors who will determine any action taken with regard to pool privileges. The manager may prohibit entry to anyone for up to one week for each violation or for a 1-year period with authorization of the Board of Directors. No refund for monies for use of the pool for this year will be made. 3. Safety is of primary concern to the Association and its members. All persons using the pool do so at their own risk and agree to abide by the rules for use of the facility. The Association assumes no responsibility for any accident or injury in connection with such use or for any loss or damage to personal property. Members (unit owners, tenants, and non-residential members) are responsible for the action of their children and guests. 4. Children under ten (10) years of age must be accompanied by a responsible person sixteen (16) years of age or older while in the pool area. 5. No person shall use the pool facilities unless the pool is officially open and lifeguards are on duty. Unauthorized persons found inside the pool enclosure when the pool is closed may lose their privileges for the remainder of the pool season and risk prosecution for trespassing. 6. All bathers shall take a shower bath using soap and warm water and thoroughly rinsing off before entering the pool. (Parents are urged to instruct their children.) This will help keep the water disinfected and sanitized, as well as cut down on costly chemicals. The Wellington Defender 7. Persons who have obvious infections (colds, lesions, open sores, etc.) will not be allowed in the pool. 8. Swimmers must wear proper swimming attire. No street clothing will be allowed in the pool, including but not limited to cutoffs, dungarees, t-shirts or similar attire of the type, which will unravel and cause drain clogging. Additionally, street (hard-soled) shoes are prohibited in the pool area. 9. Swim Diapers must be worn by diaper-aged children. 10. Persons must stay clear of guard stations at all times and in no way distract on-duty lifeguards in the chairs. Please direct all concerns to a manager or the lifeguard on the deck. 11. Persons unable to demonstrate an ability to swim will not be permitted in the diving/slide area or in areas of more than a 6 depth. The ability to swim shall be demonstrated by continuously swimming one deep end pool length and treading water one minute. 12. No play equipment, play pens, wheeled vehicles (except wheelchairs and strollers) are permitted in the pool area. 13. No pets (except seeing-eye dogs with an unsighted person) are permitted in the pool area. 14. Instructional flotation devices may be used at the discretion of the lifeguard. Tubes, rafts, and hard balls are prohibited. Wacky Fun Noodles and soft balls are allowed at the discretion of the lifeguard. Children wearing such aids must be within arm s length of the person sixteen (16) years or older who is supervising the child. 15. Running, pushing, wrestling, dunking, and standing or sitting on another s shoulders is prohibited, as this endangers other swimmers. 16. There will be a fifteen (15) minute rest period for children each hour. During this period, children must be completely out of the pool to allow adults 18 and older to swim. No infants or toddlers are allowed in the pool at this time. 17. Children using the wading pool are the responsibility of the parent(s) or escort and must be accompanied and supervised by an adult or escort who is also within the permeter of the wading pool. Children over six (6) years of age are not permitted in the wading pool, even during the fifteen-minute adult swim break.
5 The Wellington Defender Page The pool may be closed at the discretion of the pool manager on duty in case of thunder, lightning, rain, operational breakdown, or unsanitary conditions. The pool will reopen as soon as conditions would permit. 19. The pool is a family environment. Inappropriate language and behavior will not be tolerated. 20. 11 The Wellington Defender Page 11 Volunteer Community Service By: Debbie Johnson, General Manager Most of the area middle and high schools have programs that require a number of community service hours from the student members. The Association recently received calls from two Wellington students looking for a task to perform to fulfill their requirements. Carley Wilson was the first caller. Ms. Wilson policed her area of the neighborhood and removed trash from the side of the road. She picked up trash on a Wednesday after trash pick-up and was quite amazed at all of the trash that was blowing around the neighborhood. Naomi Ruiz also policed her area for trash removal and also retrieved numerous bags. We take our hats off to both these young ladies for taking pride in their school activities and in their neighborhood. After their trash collecting experience, both girls will be more conscience of how and where they dispose of their trash. If there are any other students or scout clubs within the neighborhood who would be interested in working on a group service project, please contact the on-site office or your Board of Directors with your ideas and plans for approval.
12 Page 12 Wellington Pool Frequently Asked Questions Does everyone in my household need a pool pass? Yes. Each person over the age of five listed on the pool registration form will need a proximity card with photo, issued by the Association. Those children aged five and under will be issued a card with no photograph. Remember, if you ve already gotten a facilities pass, you do not need to do anything to renew it. What if I have a childcare provider? Your childcare provider must be at least 16 years of age and listed on your pool registration form. The childcare provider will be issued a special photo proximity, which will allow access to the pool only when caring for children who have valid Wellington facility passes. There are no guest privileges associated with the childcare provider pass, including children who are being cared for that are not Wellington residents. What if I rent a home within the Wellington Community? Renters are required to obtain authorization from the owner of the Wellington home prior to registering for the pool. Renters will need a completed Tenant Designation Form signed by the owner and a completed pool registration form before facility passes will be issued. The Tenant Designation Form is available at the on-site office. Guests Each guest over the age of two must be recorded on the guest sign in. Wellington residents must be at least 16 years of age to bring a guest to the pool. Wellington residents between the ages of 16 and 18 are limited to two guests. Residents over the age of 18 may bring 5 guests to the pool. All guests must be accompanied by a resident of Wellington the entire time they are at the pool. What if I have an adult relative or friend who will be visiting me and wishes to take my children under the age of ten to the pool without me? Unfortunately, children under the age of ten must be accompanied by a Wellington resident with a valid pool pas who is at least 16 years of age. Can I bring refreshments to the pool? Yes. Wellington residents are welcome to bring refreshments, so long as they are consumed in the designated area and trash is placed in the receptacles located on the pool deck. No alcoholic beverages are permitted! Also, please be reminded that glass containers, Styrofoam cups and balloons are not allowed within the pool enclosure. The Association provides vending machines located in the pavilion for use by pool patrons. The Wellington Defender Keepers of the Grounds By: Tim Hughes, Grounds and Landscaping Committee Wellington is still looking for a few good residents to be members of the Grounds & Landscaping Committee. If you re interested in seeing Wellington maintain its beautiful, clean and natural landscapes, then we hope you ll show an interest in this committee. The community representatives on this committee provide oversight on issues regarding grass mowing, landscape gardens, tot lots, litter control and trash receptacles. The committee also offers ideas and advises the Board of Directors on designs and plantings of flowers, shrubs and trees in the community. If you have a naturally green thumb and find yourself interested in beautification beyond your own property line, then you re a very, very good candidate for this committee. Spring is just around the corner and we would like to have representation on the committee from each section in Wellington so that we have fair and balanced representation. If interested in being a committee member, please contact the Association office or call Tim Hughes at Mulch Sale Workers
13 The Wellington Defender Page 13 Annual Spring Mulch Sale By: Debbie Johnson, General Manager The Annual Spring Mulch Sale was a huge success. The weather cooperated and it was warm and sunny. No rain this year like in the past! The Association began the mulch sale years ago as an incentive to residents to spruce up their yards. The mulch mixture is of exceptional quality and less expensive than the mulch sold in most area stores. Another great benefit of the sale is that you don t have to leave the neighborhood and the Wellington volunteers help you load it into your vehicle. Thank you to Board Member Bob Porch, who was instrumental in compiling the list of purchasers, working the check in table and directing traffic throughout the day. A special thank you goes out to all the heavy lifers who loaded cars, truck and trailers. A 3 cubic foot bag of mulch weights approximately 25 pounds (maybe more) and after lifting 2,000 bags it can become back breaking! Thanks to Bill Burcin, Rodney Desmet, Mickey Heyward and Dan Strishock for the heavy lifting. These gentlemen have been helping with the mulch sale for years and we could not do it without their help! I slung a few bags myself and used muscles I forgot I had! A few of the guys even went the extra mile and loaded mulch and delivered it to their neighbors. After four hours of heavy lifting, most of the volunteers went home and spread mulch. Thanks again for your help and see you at the next Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Annual Volunteer Dinner By: Debbie Johnson, General Manager The Annual Volunteer Dinner was held in March at O Meara s Restaurant & Pub for the 2006 community volunteers. The menu consisted of lemon chicken, roast beef, garlic potatoes and delicious mixed vegetables. A yummy cake was also served to finish up the evening. Board President Andrew Lopez thanked all of the attendees for attending the dinner and thanked them for their help throughout the year. Again, without volunteers, many events can t take place. Below is a list of individuals who helped out during the 2006 season. Bob Porch, Andrew Lopez, Christopher Sims, Suzanne Seaberg, Michele Samoy, Tim Violette, Dennis Young, Bob Ferguson, Stephanie Shoram, Dee Kuwalik, Rick Ritner, Mike Wittlinger (moved), Adil Godrej, Marilyn Pratt, John Rosko, Jalon Zimmerman, Ben Cotton, Cynthia West, Steve, Conrad, and Kinsey Yaddof, Mickey Heyward, Rod Desmet, Dan Strishock, Crystal Violette, Rhonda Caplis and Tim Hughes.
