1 INDIANA SWIMMING AND DIVING Athletics Communications Melanie Schneider Men s Swimming and Diving Contact phone - (812) fax - (812) SETTING THE SCENE Indiana heads to the Big Ten Men s Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Last year Indiana finished fifth at the Big Ten meet with 283 points. NEWS AND NOTES Indiana looks to improve upon last year s fifthplace finish at Big Tens and should be helped by the return of several standout swimmers. Sophomore backstroke specialist Eric Ress returns after taking a redshirt season in Ress was an All-American in the 200 backstroke in 2009 and finished second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the 2009 Big Ten Championships. Ress has posted seven NCAA B cuts in the 100 back and six in the 200 back this season. He has the third-fastest time this season in the NCAA in the 100 back and the second fastest in the 200 back. Senior Bryan Chovanec returns after posting a silver-medal finish in the 50 freestyle at last year s Big Ten meet. Chovanec ranks 14th in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten this season in the 50 free with a time of Chovanec and senior Ante Zoricic are tied for the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 50 free with marks of set at the 2009 Big Ten meet. Senior Brenden Butler posted a pair of 11thplace finishes last year in the 400 individual medley and 1,650 freestyle. Senior Ilya Larin has had a solid season for the Hoosiers in the distance events with the team s top times in the 1,650 free and 1,000 free this season. He also has an NCAA B cut in the 500 free. 2 Sophomores Ryan Hinshaw and Andrew Taylor both have B cuts in the 500 free this season. BIG TEN ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Eric Ress was twice named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, while Titus Knight earned one honor and diver Mick Dell Orco picked up his first Big Ten Athlete of the Week award for the season. Ress earned his first weekly honor on Oct. 26 after winning six of the eight events he swam as the Hoosiers picked up dual meet wins on back-to-back days, topping Northwestern ( ) and Kentucky ( ). Ress recorded a clean sweep against Northwestern, taking titles in every event he swam in the season opener with wins in the 200 medley relay (1:31.88), 100 backstroke (49.11), 200 backstroke (1:47.39) and 100 butterfly (49:77). Coming back the following day, Ress won two of his three individual events with a mark of in the 100 butterfly and a time of 1:51.67 in the 200 individual medley. On Jan. 11, Titus Knight was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, while Mick Dell Orco was named Diver of the Week. Knight took first place in two individual events and led Indiana to a victory in the 400-yard relay as the Hoosiers beat Michigan, , for the first time since the season in dual meet action. Knight swept the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles, posting a then-season best time of in the 100 freestyle. In the 200 freestyle, Knight posted an NCAA provisional time of 1: The Austin, Texas, native led off the 400 freestyle relay with a time of as the Hoosiers finished in 3:00.09, an NCAA provisional time. Dell Orco earned the first weekly diving award of his career after posting two NCAA Zone qualifying marks en route to helping the Hoosiers defeat the Wolverines. On the platform, the sophomore earned a first place finish and scored a career-best The St. Louis, Mo., native, continued his success on the one-meter springboard, where he finished second with a mark of Ress was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season on Feb. 1. Ress won two individual events and set a pair of pool records in the process as the Hoosiers tallied dual meet wins over No. 18 Louisville and Virginia Tech. Ress won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of an NCAA B cut and Ralph Wright Natatorium record. He made it a sweep of the backstroke events with a winning time of 1:45.43 in the 200, also an NCAA provisional mark and new pool record. Ress earned two more NCAA B cuts in the 200 medley relay (1:29.76) and the 500 freestyle (4:28.26). BIG TEN POWER Looze has directed the Hoosiers to six topfour Big Ten finishes in eight years at the helm of the Indiana program.
