1 From: SAC Ash Patchett Team Coordinator LOSSIEMOUTH RAFT RACE 2018 On Sunday the 29 th July 2018, Lossiemouth will be holding its annual Raft Race. Teams consisting of 4-8 people will race their self-built crafts along the Lossiemouth East Beach estuary. The event is well supported by the local community and regularly achieves an attendance in excess of 5000 people, proving to be a great day out for the whole family. This year it also takes place during the heart of the RAF 100, a national campaign in which we will mark the centenary of the RAF with the themes of commemorate, celebrate and inspire. We very much look forward to sharing this special occasion with the local community and working with you to make this the biggest and most successful Raft Race to date. The Raft Race will be in support of four very worthwhile charities, MFR s Cash for Kids, the Ladybird Development Group, Moray Fresh Start and RAF100 Appeal. Further details about the work carried out by these charities can be found at Annex A. Attached at Annex B is a copy of everything you need to enter a team into the race, including entry forms, rules and regulations, and sponsorship forms. 2 Lossiemouth Raft Race 2018 Nominated Charites ANNEX A to Raft Race Entry Form Dated 1 May 2018 MFR Cash for Kids is the charity arm of Moray Firth Radio. Our fundraising team work hard throughout the year to raise vital funds for children across the North of Scotland. We support a wide range of children and children s organisations throughout the North; the terminally ill, disabled, children from a disadvantaged or dysfunctional backgrounds, pre-school nurseries and school clubs, youth groups, uniformed organisations such as the Scouts and Brownies and many groups and organisations where children are benefactors. MFR Cash for Kids Established in 1985 by the late Dr Iain White and his wife, Ann. They recognised the need for a local provision to care for pre-school children who required additional support in their development, from the Lossiemouth and surrounding area. Children may have need of early additional support on a short/long term basis because of speech/language difficulties, social/behavioural problems, sensory impairment or some degree of physical or learning disability. These children are referred to Ladybird by various health professional agencies for extra help and support. There are currently 14 children attending and the centre can care for up to six children at each session, offering a high level of support, mainly on a one adult to one child ratio. The Ladybird Development Group It is difficult moving from homelessness into a new tenancy. There are lots of things to buy at a time when money won t stretch. Friends and family usually play a vital role helping with essentials. But what if you don t have friends and family close by to rely on? Many tenancies fail in the early stages because people simply can t buy the essentials that help turn a house into a home. We support homeless people moving into a new tenancy in Moray by providing a pack of basic household items that help make a new beginning. We also support other people in times of need, such as coming home from hospital or another emergency, if they are referred to us. Moray Fresh Start The RAF100 Appeal is a joint venture between the Royal Air Force and four major RAF charities the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, the Royal Air Forces Association, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and the Royal Air Force Museum. The aim of the appeal is to raise money for the RAF Family and to create a lasting legacy as we celebrate 100 years of the Royal Air Force in RAF100 Appeal

3 ANNEX B to Raft Race Entry Form Dated 1 May 2018 THE 41 st ANNUAL LOSSIEMOUTH RAFT RACE PM SUNDAY 29th July 2018 TEAM ENTRY RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. Eligibility. The Lossiemouth Raft Race is open to all groups, businesses, associations and clubs in the local area as well as Service and civilian personnel employed at RAF Lossiemouth and Kinloss Barracks. 2. Raft Construction. Rafts are to meet the following specifications (those that do not will be disqualified from the race): A raft is a flat (preferably floating) structure which may be constructed from manufactured items of a non-nautical (and non-toxic) nature. Rafts which closely resemble boats or canoes will be disqualified. Specially formed GRP resin (fibreglass) structures are not to be used. Propulsion is to be achieved via paddles or sails made from domestic materials. Sharp or angled parts of the raft or associated equipment are to be suitably covered with protective padding. Each raft is to be clearly marked, front and rear, with the raft s identification number, which will be issued on the day of the race. 3. Crew Composition. Each crew must consist of a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 persons. All crew members must be over the age of 16 years. A captain nominated from each team will be responsible for both the raft and crew for the duration of the race. Crews are encouraged to wear fancy dress, however, no clothing is to be worn that could prove hazardous if the raft should overturn or sink. All crew members MUST be able to swim at a basic level. 4. Safety. For your own safety, all crew members are to abide by the following instructions: Anyone who in the opinion of the organisers has been drinking alcohol prior to the start of the race will be barred from competing. Crew members must be able to affect an immediate escape from the raft and must not be restricted in any way. All race participants are to wear a buoyancy aid, this will be provided on the day; however, crews may wear their own. The River Lossie may contain obstructions that could cause cuts and abrasions. Crews are to wear foot protection and are advised to wear hand protection. All crews must obey the instructions of the organisers and safety boat crews. 5. Entry. A team entry form is at Enclosure 1. The cost of entry for each team is 30 to be paid by cheque or cash. Cheques are to be made payable to Service Funds RAF Lossiemouth. 4 6. Sponsorship. Teams are encouraged to raise sponsorship money for the event s nominated charities. A sponsorship form is at Enclosure 2. Cheques for monies raised from team sponsorship should be sent to: Cpl Zoe Walker, A5 Stn Ops, RAF Lossiemouth, Moray, IV31 6SD No later than 31 st August Cheques should be made payable to: Service Funds RAF Lossiemouth. 7. Assembly. Registration is to be attended by team captains, and will take place in the control tent at pm. Crews are to assemble with their rafts in the assembly area by 1.00 pm. The rafts will be inspected to ensure their construction complies with the race rules and regulations. The judging of the fancy dress competition will also take place at this time. A final brief for captains will take place at the assembly area at 1.30 pm. Due to water temperature it is recommended that rafts are not launched until 1.40 pm for a start time of 2.00 pm. At the end of the race all teams are to meet up at the control tent at 3.00 pm for the presentation of prizes. 8. Prizes. Prizes will be presented as soon as possible after the end of the race and will be awarded for: 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Team Best Fancy-Dress Raft (theme this year is 100 years of the RAF ) and Outfit. 9. Liability. All participants take part in the race voluntarily. The organisers, RAF Lossiemouth and the Ministry of Defence will not accept any liability for loss, damage, injury or death caused during the race or any activities connected with the race. 10. Throwing of Missiles. All Raft Race crews are reminded that the throwing of eggs, flour bombs and water balloons is to be confined to the race only. In the past, battles have started during the fancy dress competition and this had led to complaints from residents in the area and parents worried over the safety of their children. Team captains are to ensure that crews adhere to this instruction and keep to the spirit of the event, allowing all spectators and local residents to enjoy the day. 11. The aim of the Lossiemouth Raft Race is to raise money for worthwhile charities and above all, to have fun. GOOD LUCK!
