1 SEASON IN REVIEW With a 7-3 (4-3 Big Ten) dual meet record, an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 25th-place NCAA Championships finish, head coach Dan Ross led the Boilermakers to another successful season, all while leaning toward the anticipation of a sad, but anxious goodbye to the Lambert Fieldhouse pool and an exciting opening of the new Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Boilermakers began the season with high hopes for one of the best senior classes in years and several freshman newcomers on board. Junior and Mexican Olympian Javier Diaz also returned from Sydney and the 2000 Summer Games to contribute to the Boilermakers cause. Senior NCAA and CoSIDA All-American started his stellar senior campaign early, as he swam three events (400 free, 1,500 free and 400 IM) at the 2000 U.S. Olympics Trials in Indianapolis. As a result of his performances in Indianapolis, he then qualified for the FINA Open Water World Championships. Martin swam the 10K race in Honolulu, Hawaii, as one of only six U.S. representatives to the Championships. He finished a very respectable 11th individually, and earned a bronze medal with the U.S. team. Several other Boilermakers were given the opportunity to compete in either national or international competition for their respective countries. Sophomore Tad Sayce also competed at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, swimming in the 100 fly, while Gui Rego, Mike Miller and Ehud Dekter swam in international competitions for their native countries, Brazil and Israel. started its dual meet season with a bang, as the team went on a 5-0 run, defeating Vincennes, Miami (Ohio), Evansville and Big Ten rivals Iowa and State, with a second-place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational squeezed in between. During that same time, the men received their highest College Swim Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) ranking in the history of the program at 15th. In the early signing period, the Boilermakers signed three recruits who the coaching staff believe should bolster the Old Gold and Black s lineup for the -02 season. Rion Epping of Darien, Wis., Steuart Martens of Bethesda, Md., and Clayton Davis of Spring, Texas, signed their National Letters of Intent to swim distance and dive for. The Old Gold and Black continued their Big Ten season with losses to No. 9 and No. 17 Penn State, a win over No. 21 Wisconsin, while falling to No. 16 in the next four meets. With the /Penn State meet being possibly the fastest double-dual meet in the country by that time of the year, Coach Ross was not extremely disappointed with his team s performance against such quality Big Ten teams. The Boilermakers returned home after their road stand to face rival Indiana for the emotional and traditionally very tight meet as the final meet ever to be held in Lambert Pool. defeated the Hoosiers, , as several pool records were set to close out the facility. s men headed into the Big Ten Championships at with the promise of possibly one of the most-successful weekends yet. It turned out that the Big Ten Conference did not disappoint, as the men posted the fastest conference championship in the history of the Big Ten. The Boilermakers came away with seven school records broken, a Big Ten Championships meet record and a Big Ten champion in freshman Tamas Bessenyei. Bessenyei recorded a time of in the 100 breaststroke for the first title of his career, a Big Ten Championships meet record and a varsity record. His varsity record broke fellow countryman record from the 1999 season. With their performances at the Big Ten Championships, the Boilermakers produced three NCAA A-cut times for automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. Senior Matthew Martin headed to the championships to compete in the 400 IM and the 1,650 freestyle, while Bessenyei s title time also made him eligible for the 100 breaststroke race. Both Martin and Bessenyei also were chosen as All-Big Ten team selections. At the NCAA Championships, finished 25th with merely the two representatives swimming in five events. But Martin and Bessenyei were awarded All-American honors in two events apiece and gathered a total of 21 points with their four scoring swims.
