3 WELCOME! We would like to welcome the parents and swimmers to the YMCA Swim Team season. We have been blessed again this year to have a great team of coaches and support staff who takes great pride in helping to shape the bodies and minds of our youth through the sport of swimming. Not only will they get the instruction they need to succeed, but they will have the opportunity to make new friends and acquaintances both locally and throughout the region as we interact with other associated YMCA swim teams. As a parent, your participation and support are a vital part of helping to build a strong team! This is not only appreciated, but encouraged along with any suggestions or ideas that you may have on how to improve the program. Last year there were more than 50 swimmers making us proud! Approximately 20 of these swimmers advanced to districts, 10 moved on to represent our team at the state level and 4 swimmers represented us at nationals in North Carolina. What an outstanding achievement! We are excited for the season to begin anew and we wish you all the best of luck! 4 A SWIMMER S PRAYER Another swimming meet is scheduled today. I m going to be quite busy, so I won t have time to pray. Please bless my Mom & Dad and Coach and keep us close by you. Let the friends I make today be loyal, good and true. Please see I don t forget you God, each time I take the blocks. I sometimes get distracted by the noise and all the clocks. Please let my starts and turns be quick, my arms and legs be sure. Please help my strokes be smooth and strong and help me to endure. Please help me find the confidence I ve struggled for so much for. Help me find the shortest way from start to final touch. Swimmers practice according to their skill level, not their age level. If you have questions as to what time your swimmer practices, please contact one of the coaches. They are willing to listen and work with you for the best interest of the swimmer. 8 SWIM TEAM FEES Team Fee: $130 for the first swimmer in a family $115 for each additional swimmer $65 for each High School Swimmer, YMCA Employee and Y Friends program Payments for registration fees are accepted as follows; 1/3 due at registration, 1/3 due Nov 11 and 1/3 due Dec 9. Swimmers will not be allowed to swim in any meets if registration fees are not paid by the due dates. Invitational Fees: These fees are set by the hosting swim team and are typically a per event fee. It is preferred that these fees are paid in advance of or in full at the time of registration for the invitational. Your Account: For you convenience you are able to make deposits to your account and funds can be drawn from the account during the season. It is the parent s responsibility to track what is owed for invitationals; however, following each invitational, the treasurer will be given a list of events that each child participated in and the account will be charged accordingly. Accounts will not be credited for missed events, unless prior arrangements are made. Your account must be in Good Standing (no more than a -$50 balance) in order for you your child to participate in events. Your account report is available upon request and will be distributed to all families on December 1, February 1 and March 15. Team Swim Suits: Team swim suits will be bought and paid for by the swim team this year. We will pass them out at registration. If you would like to order more than one please see Collean Moats for details. Females must wear a one-piece swim suit. Males can either wear jammers or swim briefs. Please note: The chlorine is tough on the swimmers suits. If your swimmer plans to wear his/her suit during practices, please consider purchasing more than one suit, as they will not last the entire season. SwimOutlet.com is a great resource for our families to find practice suits and swim supplies at good prices. Ongoing Payments: We encourage all payments to be made in a swim team envelope, available in the pool lobby. PLEASE be sure the swimmer s name is on the outside of the envelope and indicate what the payments are for. The swim team will also have a mailbox/dropbox in the pool lobby area for items to be dropped off. Receipts are available upon request. 8

9 FUNDRAISERS The Swim Team is an integral part of the YMCA of Corry, but is a self-supporting group. In order to keep fees as low as possible we must raise additional funds through various avenues. It is very important that we as parents and guardians support our children/swimmers by participating in the various fundraisers. We are always looking for new fundraisers, so please inform us if you have any great ideas! Splash for Cash: Thursday, 11/3 The swimmers will collect pledges from friends and family members for each lap he/she swims. They may also collect flat donations. At the event, the swimmers will swim as many laps as possible in an hour and will then collect the money from their sponsors based on the number of laps they swam. Half of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be applied directly to the swimmer s account. VFW Breakfast: Sunday, 10/30 Swimmers and parents who sign up for this event will help serve breakfast to customers, and clean up after customers for a period of 2 hours. A schedule will be sent out prior to event. Spring has Sprung Raffle Tickets: money and tickets are due by Thursday, 2/9 The swimmers will sell raffle tickets for a chance to one of the following prizes, $100 Gas Card, $100 (4 at $25 each) gift cards, $100 in beer/car washes, $100 Wal-Mart gift card, or $100 in mulch and flowers. Winners will be announced on 2/11, at the last swim meet of the regular season. Buy Out Option: Although we would appreciate everyone participating in at least 2 fundraisers, we understand that is not always possible. Please see a board member with questions. TEAM CLOTHING Each team member will receive a FREE t-shirt with a list of our business sponsors listed on the back. There will also be an option to order additional team clothing such as t-shirts, tanks, warm-up suits, etc for the swimmers or other family members and team supporters. This is not a required fundraiser, as we are trying to keep the costs for the items low and selling them at cost. 9

10 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR A SWIM MEET - Items to pack: Swim suit having a back-up is a great idea Swim cap having a back-up is a great idea Goggles having a back-up is a great idea Flip flops/sandals On deck clothes robes, deck coats, or clothes that are easy to slip on over suits Permanent marker to write events on swimmer hand/arm Towels it s good to have at least 2 with you Toiletries for after the meet (shampoo, conditioner, soap) Permanent marker to write events on swimmer hand/arm Snack (preferably nutritional) and drink with a lid or money for concessions You may also want to consider the following: o Lock to be used on the locker for that day o Highlighter to track events in programs o Books to read o Mp3/iPod player with headphones o Coloring book/crayons o Quiet activity item (nothing that beeps or makes noise) FOR AN INVITATIONAL Items to pack: All of the same items as for a swim meet Blanket, sleeping bag and pillow there may be quite a bit of time between events An additional towel or 2 chamois towels work great too Between events the swimmers are usually in the gym or a separate room from the pool. It is normally cooler and so the swimmers need extra clothes to keep warm. During invitationals, the swimmers will be there for several hours and depending on the age groups; thus, they will need more activities to keep them occupied. Quiet activities are best as the swimmers need to be able to hear the call for upcoming events. Deck Rules: Do not put anything in the pool during a race. This can result in a disqualification for the swimmer. Swimmers must always stay behind the timers except when getting up to start a race. When swimming relays, get out of the pool within 15 seconds of finishing your length; otherwise it causes a problem with the touchpad and timing. No food is to be eaten on deck; drinks must be in bottles with lids. We ask the swimmers cheer on their teammates during dual meets and do not leave to get dressed until all of the events are completed. At invitationals, you may leave once you have completed all events for the day. 10

11 PARENTAL REQUIREMENTS We as parents and guardians agree to support our children and the YMCA of Corry Swim Team in all of the following ways. 1. To provide support to our children in the following ways: To be sure that your swimmer(s) make it to practice on time. Encouragement and praise for your swimmer(s) in all their endeavors. Attend swim meets at home and away when possible. 2. Assist with Fundraisers: Each swimmer is required to participate in at least 2 fundraisers. Participation in ALL fundraisers is greatly appreciated. For those swimmers that do not participate as required, a fundraiser buy out will be assessed to their account at a rate of $50 for families with one swimmer, $90 for two swimmers and $125 for families with 3 or more swimmers. 3. Help at Swim Meets Assist with set-up, staging, timing, slip collecting, clean-up, concession sales, announcing or selling 50/50 tickets, etc. Consider becoming a Level I or Level II official in order to be a referee, starter, stroke and turn judge or head timer. 4. Become an Officer, Parent Liaison and/or assist with various events and activities: Talk to a current board member, coach or see schedule of jobs/positions 11

13 MEET OFFICIALS AND DUTIES Meet Coordinator/Coaches Arrive one hour before meet to set up pool equipment so warm-ups may begin Check that pool is properly set up with: lane markers, back stroke flags, diving board is raised, score table and chairs, PA System is set up and working, beeper starter system is set up with starting block speakers and referee microphone in place Officials Coordinator Assign Starter, Referee, and Stroke and Turn Judges for each meet Make list of officials for referee Starter Report to referee 15 minutes prior to start of meet Insure proper starts during meet Stroke & Turn Judge Assist the meet director and referee with setting up for the pool area for the meet Report to referee 15 minutes prior to start of meet Insure proper strokes and turns during meet Signal violations by raising arm, and report violation to referee after race Score Table Arrive 30 minutes before start of meet Contact coaches for line-up sheets Make one official set of line-up for each division (Return originals to coaches) Keep running score of meet Make sure disqualification s, exhibitions and judges decisions are marked on score sheets After meet, check scoring and sign official sheets Make sure official results are sent to league secretary Lane Timers Arrive 30 minutes before meet Check that all needed equipment is at poolside Meet with Meet Coordinator to decide choice of lanes, use of exhibition swimmers, etc. Announcer Arrive 15 minutes prior to meet Announces events, swimmers, results of events including disqualification s, final score and any other information important to the meet 13

14 COMPETITION TERMS Age Groups - Governed by the standards set by the National YMCA Committee Novices 5-8 years of age Cadets 10 years of age and under Preps 12 years of age and under Juniors 14 years of age and under Seniors 19 years of age and under *19 years of age, may compete as long as they are still in high school. Swimmers are eligible to compete in a particular age group based on their age on December 1 st of the current season. They shall be eligible to compete during the remainder of the season, including league championships, in the same age group regardless of any subsequent change in age. A Midget, Cadet, Prep, or Junior may compete in a higher age bracket, but may not compete in his own age bracket that same day. A swimmer may compete in only one age group per day. Swim Meet/Dual Meet Team event between two teams. These events are scored to determine a winner at the end of the event. Invitational A swim meet between multiple teams in the area. The event is sponsored by a particular team and used as a fundraiser for their team. Trophies and ribbons are given at these meets. Swimmers can choose which events in their age group, both individual events and relays, they wish to compete in. There is a fee for each event the swimmer competes in (usually around $3 -$5 per event) Sectional Championships A regional championship meet held in February of each year. All swimmers are expected to swim at sectionals. The coach typically chooses the events that the swimmers will swim at sectionals. Points are tallied by team and the team with the most points takes home the McIntyre traveling trophy; named in honor of Jack McIntyre the longstanding coach of the YMCA of Corry swim team. There is a fee charged for each event the swimmer participates in. District Championships There are three districts (Eastern, Central and Western). Each district has a championship meet held on the same weekend in March. Our team is part of the Western District. Swimmers must attain qualifying times in a particular event in order to swim at a district championship meet. States or East-West Pennsylvania YMCA Swimming Championship The top six finishers for each event from each of the districts advance to states, as well as the top six at large by time from the entire state. This meet is usually held at Penn State in State College. Medals, ribbons and plaques are awarded at this meet. Points are tallied for each team by age division. 14
