2 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING FORMER NAVY HEAD COACH DICK PURDY The season will mark the first time in 20 years that Dick Purdy will not be involved with the women s swimming team on a day-today basis. Purdy anounced his retirement in the spring of 2004 after serving as head coach of the program since the fall of After a 39-year coaching and teaching career, I felt the time was right for me to step down, said Purdy. It is not an easy decision to leave something I have enjoyed for so many years. I consider the opportunity to have coached at the Naval Academy and to have worked with so many midshipmen a honor, a privilege and the highlight of my life. I will continue to be a big Navy fan and plan on attending many athletic events, especially ones I have not had the opportunity to watch over the years due to my coaching responsibilities. I want to thank all of my past assistant coaches for their time and effort and dedication to this program. It would not be where it is at without them. I also want to thank the many swimmers and divers that have represented the Naval Academy in women s swimming over the last 19 years and have made the program as successful as it is. Dick Purdy has been an outstanding representative of the Naval Academy for many years, said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. His dedication to not only the athletes who competed on his teams, but to the entire Brigade of Midshipmen as a coach and educator has been exemplary. Dick always put the mission of the Naval Academy first and used the inherent values to assist in commissioning some of our nation s finest leaders. In his 19 years as the program s head coach, Purdy guided the Midshipmen to 17 winning seasons and a overall record (.676). Navy totaled 11 league team titles in his tenure three in the Colonial Athletic Association and eight in the Patriot League and his swimmers amassed 113 individual and relay conference crowns, while Purdy himself garnered league coach-of-the-year accolades nine times. Purdy s eight Patriot League titles in 13 years ties him for fourth place in league history for the most conference titles won by any league coach in one sport. His teams posted a 16-3 record against Army, with wins in the last-15 dual meets against the Black Knights. Purdy took over as the program s mentor prior to the season. Despite posting a regular season record that year, the team peaked at the end of the season and won the Maryland State Meet. During his second season, Purdy led the Mids to a 10-3 record and a third-place showing in the program s initial CAA Championship appearance. Navy totaled a 31-5 ledger over the next-three seasons, winning CAA crowns each year and placing eighth, sixth and fourth at the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Mids closed the D-II chapter for the program the following year with a 5-4 record, a fourth-place finish at the CAA Championship and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. Navy entered the Patriot League at the start of the season and immediately became the dominant program in the league. The Mids won league titles in each of their initial six seasons in the Patriot League, while also winning over 70-percent of their dual meets (50-19,.724) in this span. Since the beginning of the campaign, Navy has remained one of the elite programs in the league, winning two titles with two second-place finishes and posting a (.558) dual-meet record. In the five seasons from through , Navy placed among the top-seven teams at each of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship meets. A native of Annapolis, Purdy graduated from Annapolis High School and Severn Prep School. After completing his undergraduate degree at Elon ( 63) and receiving a Masters of Education from North Carolina ( 64), Purdy joined the Naval Academy staff in 1967 as an assistant lacrosse coach and an instructor in the physical education department. He served in these capacities until 1975 when he was named head swimming coach and assistant lacrosse coach at Anne Arundel Community College. Purdy would return to the Naval Academy in 1983 with an appointment in the physical education department and was promoted to associ- Dick Purdy won 11 league titles in his 19 seasons at the helm.

2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 3 ate professor three years later. In 2002 he was awarded a honorary membership in the Naval Academy s Class of Purdy s father, Dudley, served as secretary of the Naval Academy Athletic Association from While Purdy s teams have enjoyed great success in his tenure, his athletes never thought of him soley as their coach. In addition, his impact at the Naval Academy stretches beyond those athletes on his team. Coach Purdy was truly the backbone to our program, said team captain Natalie Schultz. We could always turn to him for support at the pool or even Academy life. He was not only a swim coach, but a mentor and fatherly figure. Being his last captain and a member of the program for four years, I know that the program will miss him. I don t think you will ever find anyone more dedicated and passionate to a program. Everyday he was looking to see how he could help the girls. His attitude was always positive and I don t think he ever stopped thinking about Navy swimming it was his life. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him in this last season. If you ever mention the pool, old graduates, or even people that swam in Lejeune Hall fondly remember him. I remember sitting on deck before big meets and having letters read to us from past graduates who once swam under him and continued to keep him posted as to where they were in their Navy career. Most would emphasize the longevity of his career with Navy swimming, said senior Allison Moon. However, I would underscore the quality of his dedication toward his swimmers. In and out of season, he lives and breathes for the betterment of the team, and he will be sorely missed as he watches from the stands instead of the pool deck. He has had an unspeakable impact not only on the swimming program, but on the entire Brigade. "Coach Purdy has been such an integral part of the women s swimming program for so many years that it is hard to imagine a practice or a meet without him on the pool deck, said Julia Mason, a 1999 graduate of the Naval Academy and two-time Patriot League Swimmer of the Year. Not only was he our swim coach, but for many of us he became a sort of surrogate father while we were here. We will miss him!" Father figure is a good description of how the team feels about coach Purdy and how he treated us, said 2002 graduate and two-time league swimmer of the year Melissa Hawley. Whether it was making sure we had everything we needed on road trips, or seeing that a sick or injured athlete was taken care of and not forgotten, or finding assistance for someone who needed help with their grades, he always went out of his way to help us out. I have never met someone who was so proud of his athletes, his team and the Naval Academy. NAVY UNDER PURDY Year W-L League Meet Ind./Rel. 4 4 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING HEAD COACH JOHN MORRISON FIRST YEAR AT NAVY NORTH CAROLINA 91 Former Naval Academy assistant coach returned to The Yard this summer as the head coach for the swimming program. "Returning to Navy has been a dream since the first day I began as an assistant under Dick Purdy, said Morrison. The Academy is a great institution. The natural beauty speaks for itself, but the real beauty is in the people associated with the Naval Academy. From the mids to the support staff, the Academy attracts and breeds great people and the people make the institution first class. I am proud and humbled to be back, even though leaving Lehigh and growing relationships there is difficult. "Most important in my return is that I have an opportunity to recruit, coach, and instruct at an institution with a fabulous mission." I am very happy for both John and the Naval Academy, said Dick Purdy, whose retirement after 19 years as the program s head coach created the vacancy Morrison is filling. I think the two are a perfect fit for each other. John has a sincere admiration for the mission of the Naval Academy and understands the relationship between the team and the overall goals of the Academy. He was very successful during his years as an assistant coach here in not only helping the swimmers as athletes, but also in assisting them in every facet of midshipmen life. Morrison served as an assistant coach to Purdy for four seasons beginning in the fall of The duo coached the Mids to a record and to Patriot League titles during each season. "It will be difficult to fill Coach Purdy s shoes, but we will work hard to maintain our win streak over Army and win championships, said Morrison. We have the staff, the facilities and, most of all, the mids to do it." After leaving the Naval Academy, Morrison served as a volunteer assistant men s coach at Tennessee during the season in which the Volunteers placed fourth at the NCAA National Championship, followed by one year as an assistant for both the men s and women s teams at Rutgers. Morrison began serving as the head coach and aquatics director at the Ocean County YMCA in his hometown of Toms River, N.J., for two years starting in 1999 before being named the head men s and women s swimming coach at Lehigh in Morrison coached the Mountain Hawks to a combined record during his three seasons in Bethlehem. Lehigh s men s team won the 2002 Patriot League title and also placed second and fourth in his tenure, while the women s program produced fourth, third and fifth-placing showings at the league championship under his guidance. In addition to the program s success in the pool, Lehigh swimmers and divers totaled 30 places on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll during Morrison s three seasons. A successful athlete in his own right, Morrison earned four letters in swimming and in golf while a student-athlete at Toms River High School and, this spring, was selected as a member of the school s inaugural Hall of Fame class. He would go on to earn four letters in swimming at North Carolina, helping the Tar Heels win a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the process and graduating with a bachelor s degree from the school in Morrison would enter the coaching ranks in 1991 as an assistant swimming coach at Washington & Lee where he helped coach four NCAA Division III All-Americans. He also assisted with the school s 1992 water polo team that won the Division III Eastern Championship and served as the interim golf coach. John and his wife, amy, have a four-year old son, John, and a oneyear-old daughter, Avery. 6 6 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING OUTLOOK John Morrison will have the luxury of working with a veteran team in his first season as the head coach of the Navy swimming and diving program. Navy returns 11 of its 14 athletes who scored points for the Mids at the 2004 Patriot League Championship, including four of its five all-league honorees. Aubra Thomas is back for her sophomore season at Navy, one year after winning the 200 individual medley and both breaststroke events at the league championship to earn Patriot League Swimmer-of-the-Meet honors. Tori Throckmorton and Jenn Windstein also garnered first-team all-league honors last spring. Throckmorton won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly at the league championship, while Windstein, the 2003 league swimmer of the meet, placed second in the 200 fly and 500 free and recorded a fourth-place showing in the 1650 free at the championship. Also returning for Navy is team captain Meakin Poor, a 2004 second-team selection after reaching the finals in the 500 free (sixth), 1650 free (sixth) and the 400 IM (seventh). "We are well-skilled in every event and our depth continues to improve," said Morrison, a four-year former assistant coach at Navy who returned to The Yard this summer after three successful seasons as the head coach at Lehigh. "The team is training well and we anticipate a fantastic campaign." BACKSTROKE Throckmorton, Julie Holland, Sarah Mooney, Jennifer Jones and Shallia Saptoro are the returning backstrokers for Navy, with newcomers Jamie Call and Kelly Freeburn also expected to score points for the Mids. Of the group, only Throckmorton and Holland (finals, 200 back; consolation finals, 100 back) have scored points in the stroke at the league championship, however. "This will be a proving ground event for us at the championship," said Morriosn. "I expect our swimmers to improve dramatically in the 200 back, while we will continue to have success in the 100 back. Jaime Call will be a solid addition to our backstroke events." BREASTSTROKE Thomas will look to defend her league titles in both breaststroke events this spring, while E.J. Buttler-Ricketts will aim to improve upon her eighth-place finish in the 100 breast and 11th-place showing in the 200 breast. Other returning veterans in the breaststroke events are Brielle Adamovich, Kate D Epagnier and Hollace Mulliken, with newcomer Kristine Wong ready to add to Navy s depth. "Our breaststrokers will need to lead the league in points," said Morrion. "With Aubra leading the way, Brielle, Kate, and E.J. have the potential to form the best breaststroke corps in the league." BUTTERFLY Throckmorton will attempt to win her fourth-straight 100 fly league title at the 2005 league meet, while Windstein will try to reclaim her 2003 title in the 200 fly. They will be joined in the event by veterans Pam Goodman, Mandy Minikus, Mooney and Jones, as well as newcomers Dianna Dietrich and Melissa Hough. "In the 100 fly, our event will remain strong with Jones, Minikus, and Throckmorton," said Morrison. "Dianna Dietrich is training hard with Jenn Windstien, Sarah Mooney, and Pam Goodman to improve our depth in the 200 fly. We will look for some solid points from our flyers at Patriot League Championship." FREESTYLE SPRINT Throckmorton also will be looked to key Navy s sprinters. The school record holder in both events, throckmorton will be joined by returnees Minikus, Sansarae Pickett and Allison Went. Newcomers to help challenge opponents in the sprints are Freeburn and Kristin Lowd. "We anticipate that Kelly Freeburn and Kristin Lowd will add immediate support to the depth of our sprint corps," said Morrison. "With enthusiastic work, Navy may emerge as one of the fastest sprint groups in the league." MIDDLE DISTANCE Megan Welsh, the Navy record holder in the 200 free, and Mulliken are expected to lead the middle-distance swimmers. A Sarah Mooney The Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War, was ratified in the Annapolis State House.

2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 7 Megan Welsh slew of newcomers in Gray, Freeburn, Lowd, and Hough will all be looked upon to score points. "Meg Welsh and Hollace Mulliken will continue to be the work horses in the middle distance groups," said Morrison. "We also expect big contributions from Gray, Freeburn, and Lowd." DISTANCE The presence of Windstein, Poor and Michelle Williams make this one of Navy s deeper strokes. In addition to Windstein holding the Navy record in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle events, Williams scored points for the Navy at the league meet in the 500 and 1650, while Poor reached the finals of the same events. Returnees Goodman and Amanda Lorenz and newcomer Hough only add to Navy s depth. "Windstein will continue to be one of the leagues most feared competitors, and team captain Meakin Poor is training hard and poised to make the Windstein / Poor distance corps the strongest in the league," said Morrison. "Adding to the depth will be Williams, Hough and Dietrich, which creates an all-around tough group to beat." for points throughout the season. "Our IM groups will continue to climb the Patriot League ladder," said Morrison. "Along with Thomas as the leader in the 200 IM, Jaime Call, Rachel Gray, and Meg Welsh also will be challenging for some big wins. In the 400 IM, Poor will bring her distance base to the mix.tagged with Brielle Adamovich, Kate D Epagnier and E.J. Buttler-Ricketts, we will look for our 400 IM group to score big points at the championship." DIVING Veteran Sheila Singer advanced to the finals on both boards at last spring s league meet, while Rachel Walker scored points for Navy on the one-meter board. With the addition of freshman Katie Griffin and the veteran presence of Arlene DeCindio, diving coach Joe Suriano is once again fielding a talented and deep diving squad. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Thomas holds the Navy, Patriot League and Lejeune Hall record in the 200 IM, making her one of the favorites for the league title again this season. Look for Adamovich,Welsh, D Epagnier, Poor, Gray and Call to also contribute and challenge Arlene DeCindio Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is the only Naval Academy graduate to hold that office.

28 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING At the Naval Academy, beating Army is important. Plebes yell Beat Army! in Bancroft Hall, Beat Army is on every weight in the Naval Academy weight room and alums and fans alike scream Beat Army! at the end of Blue & Gold, the Naval Academy alma mater. Thanks to an upgrade in facilities and improvements in the coaching and support staffs, the Mids have dominated the Black Knights over the past seven seasons, going (.716), including an (.724) mark in N- Star competition. During the season, Navy athletic teams produced a (.442) record against the Black Knights, including 13-9 (.591) in competition for the N-Star. The football team brought the Commander-In-Chief s Trophy back to Annapolis following a 34-6 victory over Army. Led by a 152-yard, two touchdown performance from Kyle Eckel (right), Navy dominated on the ground, outgaining the Black Knights The men s soccer team earned its first N-Star since 1999 thanks to a goal in the 83rd minute by rookie Zach Pleis (below), his first-career goal. For Navy s swimming program, it was the end of an era for women s coach Dick Purdy, while the birth of another for men s coach Bill Roberts. Purdy ended his 39-year coaching career (19 as the women s head coach) owning a 16-3 record over the Black Knights, including 15 straight. the season was no exception for Purdy, as he closed out his coaching career with a win. Roberts, meanwhile, earned a win in his first Army-Navy meet as a head coach thanks to a pair of Lejeune Hall records and victories in eight events. Noah White (below center) set a Lejeune Hall, Army-Navy meet and Patriot League record, as well as an NCAA B cut time in the 100 freestyle to lead the Mids to their third-consecutive win over their arch rival. The Navy wrestling team won seven of the 10 bouts en route to winning its fourth-straight Star Meet last winter. The highlight of the meet was Pat Lukanich s (right) upset victory (6-5) over 157-pound Phillip Simpson who was ranked seventh in the nation. Head coach Bruce Burnett is 4-0 against Army and the Mids own a dominating all-time series advantage. Navy has won 16-straight women s swimming and diving meets against Army.

2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 29 More than 7,000 fans crowded into Michie Stadium to watch the Navy lacrosse team squash Army, 18-10, en route to a flawless inaugural Patriot League season for the Mids. All-Americans Ian Dingman and Joe Bossi, along with starting attack Jon Birsner (left) all turned in three-goal performances to lead the Mids to their seventh-straight N-Star. The golf team set the tone for the year with a 6 1/2 to 4 1/2 victory over Army at the USNA Golf Course in Annapolis Sept. 27. The two-point win over the Black Knights went down as one of the tightest matches in the long-standing rivalry. The match went down to the final hole where 2003 graduate Rob Stochel (right) drained a putt to give Navy the half point it needed to clinch the match. MIDSHIPMEN IN THE COMMUNITY Forward Stacy Finley, one of the most decorated players in Navy women s soccer history, scored directly off a corner kick to help the team claim its seventh N-Star in the last eight games (tied, 1-1, in 2002). With the game winner against the Black Knight, Finley tied the Navy record for career goals, a record she would break a game later. One of the challenges we continue to face is helping our children understand the importance of education and helping them realize that lofty goals are attainable. With an increasing number of collegiate athletes dropping out of school early to pursue lucrative contracts in the professional arena, we are left with the question who are our children s role models? At the United States Naval Academy, the Midshipmen have to balance the rigorous requirements of education, athletics and basic military training. With Navy athletes competing at the Division I level, the demands of their sports heighten the importance of maintaining solid grades. Navy is one of the few Division I schools in which all athletes must meet stringent academic expectations. This is what makes our Midshipmen such tremendous role models, successfully maintaining that balance between athletics and academics at a highly competitive level. The Naval Academy Athletic Association works with local schools to expose youth to the Midshipmen, with the hope of providing a lasting impression. Typically, in assembly style, the Midshipmen speak to the students about life at the Academy, the experiences of competing in Division I athletics and what they ve learned while at Navy, in addition to answering the multitude of questions that the students have. Navy leads the women s swimming and diving series with Army, 19-4.

30 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft laid the foundation for the Naval Academy when, in 1845, he established the Naval School at Fort Severn in Annapolis. Commander Franklin Buchanan served as the first Superintendent. His faculty consisted of four officers and three civilian professors. There were 50 students. Initially, the academic and professional instruction required five years the first and last at Annapolis, with the intervening three at sea. In 1850, the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. The following year, the Academy adopted its current course of instruction which includes four consecutive years at Annapolis, with at-sea training provided during the summers. The Naval Academy moved to Newport, R.I., during the Civil War. In 1865, it was re-established at Annapolis under the leadership of Vice Admiral David Dixon Porter. During these early years, the Academy was one of the few institutions of higher learning offering a sophisticated undergraduate course in technical education. The late 19th century saw immense changes in naval technology with the conversion from sail-powered, wooden ships to steam-powered vessels of steel, which also resulted in rapid developments in naval weaponry and tactics. With the Spanish-American War in 1898, the United States became a world naval power, and early Naval Academy graduates like George Dewey and Alfred Thayer Mahan made significant contributions to our national heritage. The new century saw the nation s undergraduate naval college grow in size and academic prowess. The Class of 1895 had produced 41 graduates. By World War I, there were nearly 200 graduates each year, along with 2,500 reserve officers who received their training at the Academy. With the entry of the United States into World War I, courses were shortened to three years, a program which remained in effect until Between the two world wars, the curriculum and training equipment were modernized to keep pace with rapid advances in the naval profession and American education. In 1930, the Association of American Universities accredited the Naval Academy, and in 1933, an act of Congress authorized the Naval Academy to confer the degree of bachelor of science on graduates, beginning with the Class of Congress authorized award of the degree to all living graduates in The Middle Atlantic States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools first accredited the Academy in During World War II, summer sessions were instituted and the course was again shortened to three years. As during World War I, reserve officers, along with reserve midshipmen, also trained at the Academy. In 1963, the Academy initiated the Trident Scholar Program, under which a number of exceptional students are permitted to pursue independent research during the first class (senior) year. The academic year saw the civilian positions of academic dean and dean of admissions established and far-reaching changes made to the curriculum. The number of required core courses was reduced and, for the first time, each midshipman was allowed to pursue academic areas of individual interest for minor or major. Additional changes, introduced in the academic year, now require every midshipman to complete a major. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed legislation authorizing admission of women to the service academies. The first women midshipmen entered the Academy in July 1976 and graduated with the Class of Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt, USN Superintendent Chet Gladchuk Director of Athletics Commissioning Week consists of six days of parades, ceremonies and receptions to bring to an end four years of training.

NAVAL ACADEMY FACTS 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 31 GO NAVY AND START THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME. At the United States Naval Academy, our students are challenged morally, mentally and physically like never before in their lives. Students come here because they yearn for a challenge and want to be part of something larger than themselves. The Naval Academy is the undergraduate college of the Navy and Marine Corps. It is a four-year honor, integrity and leadership laboratory that uses a total-immersion program to blend academics, professional training, leadership experience, physical education, competitive sports and extracurricular activities. We hire every one of our graduates. Upon graduation from USNA, a midshipman receives a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy or as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, along with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in one of 19 different academic majors. From there, they are sent to high-tech 21st century assignments in aviation, submarines, warships or other exciting operational fields. The Naval Academy midshipmen are given responsibility and leadership opportunities commensurate with their status within the Brigade. First class midshipmen, or seniors, run the day-to-day operation of the 4,000 men and women that constitute the Brigade of Midshipmen. THE ROLL CALL OF VARSITY LETTERWINNERS AT THE NAVAL ACADEMY READS LIKE A VERITABLE WHO S WHO IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Rear Admiral Alan B. Shepard, the first American in space, was a member of the heavyweight crew team. Air Force General William Anders played soccer at the USNA before going on to be an astronaut. Admiral Stansfield Turner, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, was a lineman on the football team. Admiral Arleigh Burke, a wrestler at the Academy, went on to be the Chief of Naval Operations. Rear Admiral Richard Byrd, a captain on the gymnastics team, was a famous polar explorer and World War II hero. Fleet Admiral Bull Halsey was also a football star at the Naval Academy. Other heroes on the athletic field include: 1960 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bellino; 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Hall of Famer Roger Staubach; David Robinson, who was the 1987 Collegiate Player of the Year, the 1995 NBA Player of the Year and won Olympic Gold Medals in 1992 and 1996 and Commander Willie McCool, a captain on the cross country team, who was an astronaut on the space shuttle Columbia s final voyage. THE BRIGADE OF MIDSHIPMEN REPRESENTS THE BEST THIS NATION HAS TO OFFER: * The average SAT score is approximately 1300 * 81 percent of the midshipmen attending the Naval Academy were in the top fifth of their high school class * 87 percent were varsity athletes in high school and 85 percent were letterwinners * 27 percent served as high school president or vice president THE 2004 PRINCETON REVIEW RANKED THE NAVAL ACADEMY: * No. 5 for toughest to be accepted to * No. 7 for diversity * No. 7 for best community relations * No. 8 for best overall undergraduate academic experience. * No. 12 for accessibility of professors * No. 13 for smooth-operating administration The 2004 edition of U.S. News and World Report s America s Best Colleges ranks the engineering program at the Naval Academy fourth in the nation, the Aerospace Engineering program fourth in the nation, the Civil Engineering program 11th in the nation, the Electrical Engineering program fifth in the nation and the Mechanical Engineering program ninth in the nation. A third of the Brigade are varsity athletes and represent the Naval Academy in 30 NCAA Division I sports while carrying credit hours of highly-technical engineering, science and math core curriculum. Approximately 25 percent of Flag Officers in the Navy and and general officers in the Marine Corps were varsity athletes at USNA. Eighty-five percent of Navy s NCAA Division I varsity athletes graduate in four years.the most recent national collegiate varsity athlete graduation rate is 62 percent in six years. Midshipmen can choose from 21 men's and nine women's varsity sports in which to participate. Cmdr.Willie McCool, the 1982 Navy men s cross country team captain, was one of seven NASA astronauts who perished in the space shuttle Columbia tragedy. With nearly five miles of hallways, Bancroft Hall is one of the largest dormitories in the world.

32 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING MIDSHIPMEN LIFE It all begins with fourth class year. From their first day at the Academy, the fourth class midshipmen, or plebes, undergo an intensive and unabated program of military training and indoctrination. Physical and mental demands on them and their time seem never-ending. But it all has a purpose: the development of leadership ability, motivation, moral strength, physical skills and stamina. Plebe Summer is a time which most midshipmen will remember for many years. New midshipmen are kept constantly busy learning basic skills in seamanship, navigation and marksmanship. Their pride and company spirit are boosted through infantry drill, small arms training, sailing Navy yawls and cruising in yard patrol craft. Their competitive spirit and desire to win are developed in activities such as athletics, dress parades and seamanship. Plebe Summer is highlighted in August during Parents Weekend, when parents visit the Academy and witness the progress of their sons and daughters. The arrival of the upperclassmen in mid-august heralds the beginning of the academic year. The plebes embark on a four-year course of study while plebe indoctrination continues. September brings the excitement of football and other fall sports. During the football season, only selected units of the brigade travel to away games, but the entire brigade attends all home games and the annual fall classic, the Army-Navy game. Commissioning Week, in May, brings the graduation of the first classmen and the end of plebe year. Plebes signify the end of the first year at the Academy by scaling the smooth granite sides of Herndon Monument to replace, at its summit, a plebe cap with an upperclass cover. Between plebe and third class years, midshipmen get their first taste of life at sea and their introduction to the enlisted men whom they will lead when commissioned as officers. Joining ships around the world, midshipmen perform a host of shipboard duties including standing deck, gunnery, operations and engineering watches. Midshipmen also have their first opportunity to visit foreign countries and experience different cultures. Third classmen begin work in their academic majors and assume more responsibility in the military regimen at the Academy. Less emphasis is placed on indoctrination, leaving more time for studies, sports and extracurricular activities. It s a welcome change from the rigors of plebe year. During their third summer, midshipmen get their first training in four warfare specialties which comprise the naval service. They learn about submarines at New London, Conn.; surface warfare at Norfolk,Va.; naval aviation at Pensacola, Fla.; and the Marine Corps at Quantico,Va. Second class midshipmen are assigned still additional military responsibilities. They are selected and trained to direct the Brigade of Midshipmen during absences of the first class. They are also assigned an important role in indoctrination of the new plebe class, which develops their leadership skills. In academics, the second class midshipmen enter increasingly advanced areas of study. During their final year at the Academy, first class midshipmen complete the core curriculum and their academic majors course requirements. Many undertake independent research projects, and some begin graduate-level studies at nearby universities. The first class midshipmen also take over the responsibilities for plebe indoctrination.they also lead the brigade at parades, formal ceremonies and daily formations. They are responsible for the conduct, military smartness and competitive records of their units. The skills which the first class midshipmen develop this year will help them when they assume their leadership responsibilities in the Navy and Marine Corps following graduation. One common denominator which binds the four years into a unit which will forever shape the life of an Academy graduate is the Honor Concept. Established and administered by midshipmen, the Honor Concept is based on the principle that honorable individuals do not lie, cheat or steal. All midshipmen are expected to conduct their lives in accordance with the Honor Concept so that their decisions as midshipmen, naval officers and civilians reflect the highest levels of honorable conduct. THE CURRICULUM With the aid of academic and military advisors, midshipmen design their own blend of the curriculum s three elements: Courses providing the professional and leadership skills required in the naval service. Core requirements in engineering, social sciences, natural sciences and the humanities to ensure breadth in education. Completion of a major program in an academic subject chosen by each midshipman to develop individual interests and talents in depth. The Naval Academy offers major programs in 18 subject areas: eight in engineering; six in sciences and mathematics, including computer science; and four in the humanities and social sciences. Seven of the engineering majors are accredited professionally by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. Selected humanities and social science majors with excellent records are invited to enter the rigorous honors programs offered by the departments of Economics, English, History and Political Science. Outstanding students also have the opportunity to engage in independent study and research during their senior year. Those selected as Trident Scholars carry a reduced formal course load so they can pursue a major research project and prepare a thesis. They are assisted by one or more faculty advisors who specialize in the field of study. A number of first class midshipmen who complete academic requirements early are encouraged to enroll in graduate classes at area universities. This Voluntary Graduate Education Program gives them the chance to graduate and receive commissions with their classmates, finish their graduate studies locally and then go to their first assignments with a master s degree. A faculty and officer representative is assigned to every varsity and junior varsity team at the Naval Academy.

All midshipmen undertake professional military training, beginning on the first day of Plebe Summer and continuing through first class year. This includes classroom studies, drills and practical training at the Naval Academy and with Navy and Marine Corps units during summer programs. Navigation, seamanship, tactics, naval engineering, weapons, leadership and military law are among the areas studied. To advance and graduate, midshipmen must pass professional competency examinations covering general knowledge and subjects related to their service selection. The Naval Academy s physical education program complements academic and professional development of midshipmen. Instruction and training aim to develop individual skills and competitive spirit, lifelong habits of physical fitness, and the capability to withstand physical hardship when necessary. All midshipmen must complete the four-year program which includes the Physical Readiness Test (twice annually), water survival, physical development, personal defense and lifetime carryover sports. Women participate in the same curriculum, including boxing, wrestling and judo NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 33 In May, Commissioning Week begins the graduation of first classmen and the end of plebe year. Plebes signify the end of the first year at the Academy by scaling the smooth granite sides of Herndon Monument to replace, at its summit, a plebe cap with an upperclass cover. The Blue Angels perform each year at the Naval Academy during Commissioning Week. Since 1946, when the squadron was formed, the team has flown for more than 337 million people around the world. COMMISSIONING WEEK Six days of parades, athletic events, colorful ceremonies, formal dances and receptions bring to a climax four years of challenging education and training. One highlight of Commissioning Week is Color Parade. Each year, intra-brigade competition is conducted to determine which of the 30 companies stands highest overall on the basis of academics, intramural sports, professional drills and parade performance. During the parade, the color girl, who is selected by the Color Company commander, transfer the flags from the past Color Company to the new one. The biggest social event of Commissioning Week is the ring dance for the second class midshipmen. An elegant formal affair, it is at this event that the midshipmen begin wearing their class rings. First class midshipmen and their families attend the superintendent's garden party and reception, plus other social events. Athletic, academic and professional awards are presented in Alumni Hall. The evening before graduation, everyone is invited to attend the farewell ball. On graduation day, friends and relatives gather with the midshipmen at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. After the diplomas are presented and the oath of office is administered, the senior midshipman of the new first class leads three cheers for "those about to leave us." The graduates, led by the class president, reply with three cheers for "those we leave behind." On the last hooray of this cheer, the 1,000 graduates toss their midshipmen covers into the air. According to tradition, the honor of putting on the new Navy Ensign and Marine Corps Second Lieutenant shoulder devices is shared by mothers and Commissioning Week dates. The Naval Academy became a co-ed institution in Today, 15 percent of the 4,000-member Brigade are women.

THE PATRIOT LEAGUE 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 35 The Patriot League is proud of its mission of promoting opportunities for Today s Scholar-Athletes,Tomorrow s Leaders. The League led NCAA Division I conferences in graduation rates for the fifth-straight year in Patriot League graduates consistently excel as professionals in their chosen fields and are contributors to the betterment of society. Patriot League teams and scholar-athletes are also achieving triumphs and accolades on the intercollegiate fields of competition. Consider some team successes in the last few years: Two Patriot League teams advanced to their respective NCAA Championship game in (Colgate football and Navy men s lacrosse); The Patriot League advanced three teams to an NCAA Championship Tournament twice in the last two years (2002 men s soccer and 2004 men s lacrosse); The Patriot League has advanced a team to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship five of the last six years, including three wins each by Colgate and Lehigh. Individual achievements have been similarly impressive: Army s Anita Allen will represent the U.S.A. in the modern pentathlon and Dan Browne will run in the marathon at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece; Three-time PL Volleyball Player of the Year Karla Kucerkova of American won her second-straight CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year award in 2003; Bucknell s Molly Creamer was a first-round draft pick, No. 10 overall, by the New York Liberty in the 2003 WNBA draft. She was one of a handful of former PL standouts playing professional basketball overseas in ; Navy s Richie Meade was named the national Coach of the Year in men s lacrosse while sophomore Matt Russell was a first-team All- American and national Goalie of the Year; Lafayette soccer standout Meghan Ramsey captured her secondstraight ECAC-Robbins Scholar-Athlete award in 2004 and was awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship; Kevin Miller of Bucknell and Drew Bigna of Holy Cross were selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball June freeagent draft. It marks the sixth-straight year at least one Patriot League player was picked in the draft; A handful of men s soccer (Steve Fisher and Evan Bruno of Lehigh) and men s lacrosse (Army Jeff Bryan along with Blaise Fletcher and Justin Sussman of Bucknell) players also were drafted or began professional playing careers this year; Navy s Billy Hurley capped his All-America collegiate golf career as the winner of the Byron Nelson Award and as a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while remaining committed to its founding principle that student-athletes are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a wellrounded education. The origins of Patriot League excellence date back to 1986 with the inception of a successful Division I-AA football conference. In 1990, the Patriot League expanded to an all-sports conference, now featuring 23 championship sports. Full League members include American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Associate members include Fordham and Georgetown for football and Villanova in women s lacrosse. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. The Patriot League Today s Scholar-Athletes,Tomorrow s Leaders is still the League s primary vision. However, the League is demonstrating annually that our student-athletes really can play. 36 36 : 2004 NAVY WOMEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING LEJEUNE HALL Lt. General John Archer Lejeune, USMC Navy s swimming and wrestling complex is named after the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corp and an 1888 graduate of the Naval Academy. He served more than 45 years in uniform, fought in World War I and completed nearly three terms as Commandant of the Marine Corps until his retirement in Lejeune Hall Opened in 1982 at a cost of $13.5 million, it was the first building at the Academy to be named for a Marine Corps officer. LIGHTING The pools are illuminated with bright overhead lights that provide 100-foot candle power at water surface. The large sky-lights supplement lighting and add to the aesthetic beauty of Lejeune Hall. POOL The large pool is 25-meters-by-50-meters with an eight-foot depth. A movable bulkhead enables Navy s teams to train at any distance. The pool provides meter short course lanes or meter long course lanes. DIVING The diving pool is 60-by-52 feet with depths varying from feet. Diving equipment consists of two one-meter maxi-cheese boards, two three-meter platforms and a diving tower with one, five, seven and a half and 10- meter platforms. There is a powerful bubbler system under each level and a trampoline-dry land board port-a-pit spotting apparatus located on the pool deck to assist in training. In addition, the diving wall has three underwater observation windows. SEATING AREA The gallery around the pool seats 1,000 spectators in comfortable armchair seats. Although the building is completely modern in conception and materials, its regularly placed columns and raised roof area compliment the traditional turn of the century French Renaissance style campus with its vocabulary of granite walls and mansard roofs. TIMING SCOREBOARD The Colorado Time Systems scoreboard and timing system is the most up-to-date automatic system in the world. The system determines elapsed time, order of finish and lap splits for each competitive lane to a thousandth of a second. The system records the results and transmits them to the scoreboard. The diving pool is equipped with a judges system that displays the awards, stores 11 dives for up to 99 divers, handles the addition and multiplication to compute degrees of difficulty, show the leading diver and flash if the current diver takes the lead. COMPETITORS FACILITIES Facilities for athletes include separate entrances, locker rooms, showers, three saunas, a large classroom, team locker rooms and a fully-equipped first aid/training room. I believe it to be almost universally accepted as sound policy that the cultivation of athletics in a military organization is extremely beneficial to the personnel from the standpoint both of improved physique and improved morale. -- John A. Lejeune, 1930 Lejeune Hall is the first building at the Naval Academy named for a Marine Corps officer.
