1 electronic NEWS 31 AUGUST 2014: version 50 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER What a hectic off-season in the hiatus since our last enews. We apologise for the unexpected break in newsletters however the compounding issues of losing two key staff members and the switch to a new national IT system have really taken their toll but we hope to be back on track now. Beth Niemeier, a member of Nightcliff Swimming Club, has joined SNTI as our new Administration Officer. We welcome Beth to our small staff team and hope she has a long and enjoyable stay. During the break in pool meets we farewelled our Community Swimming Officer, Paul Schindler who has moved to Melbourne to pursue his career path as a Coach. Good luck to Paul and Amy! The Board have also been very busy and at the September Board Meeting appointed Karen Messenger to the current Board vacancy. Karen has a thorough understanding of our operations having served on a number of committees, most recently Selection and Competition, as well as being our Meet Director for several seasons. With two daughters swimming at Darwin Swimming Club and having experience in club committees Karen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. The School Sport National Championships were a great success with Josh Staples being our stand-out performer amongst a plethora of personal best times and finals swims for the Team, well done to all and the coaches, managers and parents who supported our swimmers. In other news, the 2014 Waterfront Open Water Series has now finished with great support from Surf Lifesaving and we are gearing up for the Open Water Championships at Lake Bennett. Team Managers (Helen Brown, Tim Few & Grant Pennington) are ramping up preparations for the 2014 State Teams Age Short Course Championships and we have witnessed an outstanding effort from our Australian Team at the Pan Pacs. On the local front we saw record entries for the first Power in the Water Meet of a Series at a seamlessly run first meet of the pool season. We are also desperately seeking a Records Steward, a great role for someone who believes in rewarding performance and maintaining the integrity of our history and outstanding results. Also on performance we are delighted to welcome one of the nation s finest coaching assets, Mr Jim Fowlie to the role Coach Mentor for Northern Territory. With great support from Swimming Australia and sincere thanks to Jamie Salter we welcome Jim to help drive coaching excellence. The SAL Coach Mentor Program fits hand in glove with the NTIS Coach Scholarship Program and after many months in the planning it is great to see these programs roll out. Looking forward, we have the first of the McDonald s 9&Under Meets at Parap Pool this weekend at the home of the Buffaloes, then on to the Lake Bennett for the 2014 NT Open Water Championships on Saturday 13 th September where the 1.2k, 5k and 10k races will be contested.

9 RECORDS STEWARD SOUGHT Duties of Records Steward The following allows for the Record Steward to live anywhere in the NT and maintain the records, without the need to be physically at any meet: The swimmer and family/coach don t need to put a claim in. The record can be achieved at any official meet within the NT. The following will allow for future Disability Records and 25m Short course records. 1. Record Stewart to keep updated records and ensure that SNTI Database Manager has updated information also. 2. Before any official meet that is held in the NT (that a record can be achieved), the Meet Director of the particular meet should ensure that UPDATED records are being used. This can be requested to the Records Steward via and sent via . Records file is imported very easily into TM. 3. At the completion of each official SNTI meet the Meet Director is responsible to ensure that a records match is done in Team Manager. Any records that are flagged, the Meet Director will ensure timing slips are signed off by the Meet Referee. The Meet Director is then responsible to full meet results to Records Steward {and Database Manager}. Signed slips can then be forwarded to Records Steward via Australia Post. All other slips should be stored in a safe place.(12 months suggestion) 4. Records Steward will do a records match in Team Manager, verify record, and store slips with records sheet, in records folder. 5. Record Steward will forward the certificate to swimmers club for presentation at next meet. 6. Record Steward will updated records database to Database Manager. Please contact the Executive Officer by executiveofficer@nt.swimming.org.au if you are interested in this important and rewarding role.
10 SAL MATCHFIXING EDUCATION PLAN All state mentor coaches, state development managers and other coaches and staff travelling with state teams must complete this course. This is a requirement for all teams in place from now onwards (i.e. if the team is selected in October this year then then they must do the course). The training is optional for athletes, technical officials, parents and spectators at state level. Each state can do what they think is appropriate to educate and prepare this group for when/if they get to national level. A new education flyer is on the SAL website: Online training is available here: SUPER SWIMMING FAMILY Keeping track of the medals already hanging in his family s Wollongong home has been hard enough for David McKeon. But it seemed another stocktake loomed after McKeon admitted there was a sense of destiny about he and younger sister Emma adding to their household s impressive tally by following in their family s footsteps at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games pool. McKeon s clan can lay claim to being Australian swimming s first family a fact the three-time national 400m freestyle champion remarkably had only just fully realised. Wandering around the family home, McKeon discovered mounted medals belonging to his father Ron, who won the 200m and 400m freestyle at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. They were always there McKeon simply hadn t grasped their importance. His mother Susie Woodhouse was also no slouch, competing in the 1982 Brisbane Games pool. Then there s his uncle Rob Woodhouse, a Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic medallist. Yet McKeon admitted he had no idea about the full extent of his family s achievements until recently. I think there are a couple of medals at the rec room at home, said McKeon, who is in line to grab the Australian swim team s first Glasgow gold in the 400m.
11 SUPER SWIMMING FAMILY To tell you the truth, I only worked out what they were just a couple of years ago. I didn t really go into that room. Perhaps a proposed team address by his uncle Rob at Glasgow will also help jog McKeon s memory. The McKeon family of swimmers: Emma, Ron, David, & Susie. McKeon admitted they had blossomed after being cut loose by tough-loving dad and ex-coach Ron. I learned a lot from my dad but it was time for me to move on and be coached by someone who could get stuck into me, McKeon said. Dad couldn t really get stuck into me I suppose because at the end of the day we would have to go home together.

Swimming Northern Territory supports the policies of Swimming Australia Ltd in being totally against the taking of performance enhancing drugs within our sport. To this end, we advise all competitors that they may be drug tested at any of our sanctioned meets and may be called for random testing during non-competition periods. Any competitor who refuses to undertake a drug test without a valid reason will be reported to Swimming Australia Limited, as will any competitor who fails a test. Many medications contain banned and restricted substances as outlined in FINA s doping policy (based on the ICC list of doping classes and methods). Athletes must take great care in choosing medications, particularly when they compete in events where drug testing may occur. To ensure that the medication chosen is permitted an athlete should take the following steps: Check if the medication is listed under the check your substances section of the ASADA website: If you are uncertain contact the ASADA hotline: For more information and links to relevant policy documents, banned substance list, therapeutic use exemptions etc please visit the Anti Doping page in the Athlete Hub on Swimming Australia s website (
