29 SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT DAY IN BALLINA Swimming North Coast held their first Development Day for their northern swimmers at the Ballina Fair Swim n Gym on Sunday 19th July. 65 swimmers, parents and Development Committee were very fortunate to hold the day indoors as rain and cold wind forced lunch and morning tea to be moved inside as well. The Development Day was attended by swimmers from the Achiever, Target Senior and Junior Squads (formally known as B, C & D) and provided the swimmers with educational opportunities both in and out of the pool. A few local coaches were in attendance to take the opportunity to initially speak with Head Coach, Leanne Speechley from Abbotsleigh. The local coaches benefitted from being given the opportunity to ask questions and familiarise themselves with the format of the day. Leanne followed on with a presentation to swimmers on Swimming Pathways, a Dryland warm up preparation, Butterfly and Backstroke skill sessions as well as individual swimmer aquatic testings in the pool. The swimmers were also fortunate to have a presentation on Team Culture what it means to be part of a team. Technical Official presentations were also held throughout the day. Squad selection was based on swimmers achievements at the Swimming North Coast Summer Area Championships and State Age Championships. The Day concluded with presentations to all swimmers offering them a position on the 2015 SNC Target or Achievers Touring Teams to represent SNC at meets at Mingara or Homebush. The busy day was a great success and attributed not only to the organisation from the SNC Development Committee but all the willing parents and helpers that were more than happy to help out wherever needed. A huge thank you to Ballina Fair Swim n Gym for their support of SNC and especially to Adam who wore many hats on the day. Thank you to Head Coach, Leanne along with all the coaches in attendance as without your skills and expertise these development days would not be possible. Appreciation extends to all the presenters and volunteers but especially to the parents for supporting your children in their chosen sport of swimming. The day was a great team effort and SNC is looking forward to their next Development Day in August. NSW Swimmer Magazine August 2015 Edition Page 29

30 Why You Should Become a Technical Official Swimming NSW conducts training in all technical aspects of swimming. New officials are constantly in demand. You can help!! Swimming Championships and meets are conducted by Clubs, Areas, State and National Bodies. Swimming Australia qualified Technical Officials officiate at these various meets. A swim meet needs a lot of officials - in an eight lane pool at least 40 are necessary if the meet is to run well. Being an official is an excellent way of supporting your children in their favourite sport. There are also some fringe benefits! If you volunteer before the meet and get your name on the roster, you will normally have free pool entry. You will receive a complimentary program, and lunch and snacks are usually provided at full day meets. At State and National meets you can apply for free parking. Things to remember: Technical Officials provide the swimming community with a precious gift - time. Without Technical Officials there will be no swim meets and therefore the swimmers have no competition. Every time you work at a swim meet you help young Australians achieve their goals and stay healthy. Once qualified you can work Metropolitan/Country, State and even Nationals. All assistance during Club races is greatly appreciated. NSW Swimmer Magazine August 2015 Edition Page 30
