July 12th, 2017 WIN A VISIT FROM AN ENGLAND STAR! see last page Be one in a million on July 12th Be part of a special day for a sport that s getting bigger and better every year!
Useless (but cool) trivia that won t save your life or get you a job! PING PONG! the name comes from the sound of the ball striking the table and vellum bats used when the sport was invented 8hrs, 40mins, 5 seconds. the longest non-stop table tennis rally! 300 million table tennis players around the world +100 mph top players often smash the ball at over 100mph 40mm 2.7grams diameter / weight of the ball
Great exercise for the mind, body, and soul. Them abs tho Better hand-eye co-ordination Improves balance and reflexes Boosts motor-skills + mental agility Reduces stress and anxiety Builds confidence + self-esteem
Beat the boss, test your skills, and win a coaching session for your company Do you want be a record breaker? Join our World Record attempt on National Table Tennis Day at Media City. Beat the boss Arrange for your boss (or your nominated boss/champ for the day) to be at the table for an hour. Can anyone take five successive points off the boss? Test your skills The most serves to land in or hit a mug keep a leaderboard over 20 attempts or most in a minute Promote our competition on social media Tweet or post on the day using #TableTennisDay and or /loop.posts, and we will enter you in a draw to win a free coaching session for your company with one of our top players!
So how can your business get involved? You could hold a Round the Table challenge at lunchtime Hold an after work Pizza and Ping Pong party Invite another company in for a friendly competition Lunchtime/after work or even a week long knockout cup Beat the champ competition Ladder tournament that runs throughout the day Inter-departmental doubles tournament These are just a few ideas but we re sure you will have a few of your own! It s a great opportunity for some team building, inter-departmental interaction and a good excuse for a staff social and a bit of friendly banter!
How to play
STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW Each point starts with a serve and ends when a player can t hit the ball back, misses the table, hits their own side of the table, or hits the ball into the net. Each game is first to 11 points but if thescore gets to 10-10, you have to win by 2 points (eg 12-10, 13-11, etc). Matches are usually best of three or five games and the players change ends after every game. In doubles, you and your team-mate have to play alternate shots.
How to serve With the ball in the palm of your hand, throw it straight up a few inches. As it comes down, hit it so it bounces on YOUR side of the table first, THEN on your opponent s side. Some rules about serving If your serve goes into the net or misses the table, you lose the point. If your serve hits the net before bouncing on the other side, you serve again. This is called a let and there is no limit on the number of lets. You serve for two points, then your opponent serves for two points, and so on. If the score gets to 10-10, you take it in turns with one serve each for the rest of the game.
In singles you don t have to serve diagonally but in doubles you do and always from the right-hand side of the line in the middle of the table. Serving in doubles is best explained by an example. If A and B are playing X and Y, Player A starts by serving to X. Then X serves to B, then B serves to Y, then Y serves to A. Remember two serves each and always from the right-hand side of the table!
More events on the day Media City hub We will be at Media City in Manchester hosting a World Record attempt. You ll also be able to play alongside England legends! Return the serve competition Your chance to play against international table tennis players, with prizes given to those who can successfully return the serve of some of our elite players come down to Media City and get involved. Find out where you can play tabletennisengland.co.uk/play/play-learn-improve/getting-started
WIN! A visit from an England star! Have a member of the England Table Tennis squad visit your workplace!
