1 Piedmont Park Tennis Apprentice Registration Packet First Class Tennis Experience for Beginners You ve been wondering what the tennis craze is all about in Atlanta. Your friends and family play, and you are curious to know about the fun and enjoyment. Well now is your chance! Together with USTA Atlanta, Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park (SLAPP) will be hosting its first ever Tennis Apprentice, which is specifically designed for brand new players to the game. No need to be embarrassed about not knowing anything about tennis. All that is required is an interest and commitment to learn! Where: Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park (SLAPP) 400 Park Drive Atlanta, GA When: Session Choice #1 Monday Night Session: 6:30 8:00 PM April 4 May 9, 2011 (May if needed) Session Choice #2 Monday Night Session: 8:00 9:30 PM April 4 May 9, 2011 (May if needed) Session Choice #3 Saturday Morning Session: 10:00 11:30 AM April 2 May 7, 2011 (May if needed) Cost: $99 Registration Fee per Person. Your fee will include: USTA Membership Wilson Tennis Racket 6 Weeks of Instruction & Coaching from Experienced Professional Graduation Party & Beginner Round Robin Tournament USTA Hat USTA League Registration for Summer Season (Piedmont 2.0 Beginner League) Tennis Professional A native Georgian, Vance Exley also lived and worked in Big Sky, Montana working for the Big Sky Resort as an activities coordinator. He began playing tennis at age 5, participating in Junior ALTA. Vance was a competitive junior USTA tournament player in Page 1 of 5

2 Georgia and Southeast as well as playing for the Wesleyan School in Atlanta. Vance played singles and doubles for Georgia Perimeter College. Vance loves coaching juniors as well as adults. Vance Exley is USPTA Certified. Registration All you need to join this program is a pair of tennis shoes and an eagerness to learn and play tennis. All the fundamentals will be provided by USTA Atlanta, Wilson and SLAPP. The clinics will be small, so there is limited availability at 8 players for each session choice. To get started, call the USTA Atlanta office at to reserve your spot. Be sure to specify which session you would like to join. Once you have reserved your spot, you will be given a confirmation number and will fill out the attached registration page (last page) and mail with payment to: Attn: Chris Walling/Piedmont Park Tennis Apprentice USTA Atlanta 1200 Ashwood Parkway, Suite 500 Atlanta, GA Questions and Answers Question: I see that there are two Monday night sessions and a Saturday morning session. Must I pick one session, or can I pick and choose a different session each week? Answer: No you must pick one session and stick to it. The reason for this is to keep clinic sizes small for more individual attention. Question: I have been playing tennis for a little while now and played some in high school. Can I join the Tennis Apprentice? Answer: The Tennis Apprentice is specifically designed for new players to the game, with little or no experience. If you have more than 3 months experience, the Apprentice may not be right for you. The ideal player would be working primarily on getting the ball into play and gaining on-court experience. If you have any questions about whether or not the Tennis Apprentice is right for you, please call USTA Atlanta ( ). Question: What is the graduation party and round robin tournament? Answer: The graduation party will be a fun social gathering with an introductory tournament to follow. Players will be competing against their fellow classmates in a fun and competitive tournament to gain on-court match play experience. Details regarding the tournament will be presented to players as the graduation party nears. Page 2 of 5

3 Question: What happens if it rains during a given day in my session? Answer: If a clinic is called off due to rain, there is already an additional 7 th and 8 th session added to the clinic calendar. This will be used in the case of a make-up clinic day. If more than two sessions are rained out, your professional will work with you on getting the clinic class made up. Question: How will I know if a clinic day is canceled due to rain? Answer: Call the SLAPP front desk, and you will be notified of any cancellations or updates. Unless it is actually raining prior to the session starting, the session will not be called off. This is because rain forecasts are not always accurate. Question: I want to join the Tennis Apprentice, but all the sessions are maxed out, and I was put on a waiting list. Is there any way I can still join? Answer: So each participant can get individual attention, each session is maxed out at 8 players. There is a possibility of adding more sessions if the waiting list becomes excessive. The Apprentice will also be offered a couple of times throughout the year, so there will be future opportunities to join the Apprentice. Everyone on a waiting list would get priority sign-up at the next Apprentice. Page 3 of 5
