Rancho Peñasquitos Tennis Center Volume 31, Number 1 January 2019 Mission Statement To become the leading recreational tennis center in San Diego s North County area, by implementing activities, and providing facilities that cater to the casual, social and competitive tennis needs of people in the local community. 2018/19 BOARD MEMBERS PJ Greenwald, President Dan Scherer, VP Linda Beach, Rec Sec Marty Fellenstein, Treasurer Sharon Gehrke, Membership Norma Garrison Steve Leffler Julie Simone Sabine Schroeder STAFF MANAGEMENT Executive Director, Mike Donahue Club Director, Julie Maiorano Office Manager, Connie Komin LEAGUE COORDINATORS Men s League: Dan Scherer Women s League: Sabine Schroeder Level Coordinators: AA: Megan Steadman A: Norma Garrison/Pete Sievers BB: Julie Simone B: Lisa DeVos Junior Team Tennis League Ernie Blando Minh Vo Nick Bennett As Christmas and the closing of 2018 draws near, we take time to reflect on our lives over the past year. Life constantly brings new challenges for us, and I am sure that each of us has faced numerous new challenges (both good and bad) this year. Sometimes we get a year that just flows by without any emotional struggle; and I hope many of you had this type of year. Other times we are faced with either emotional or physical struggles and for those of you who have struggled this year I hope that 2019 brings you peace and comfort. A good goal to set for ourselves is to always do a self-reflection on what is happening in our world with an open mind and willingness to face and understand our own fears and insecurities. Through this reflection we gain confidence in ourselves and grow to accept that we not only can make it through the tough times, but will come out of them a stronger more competent understanding person. What I believe is that it takes confidence in ourselves to look at any given trial as if it were a gift sent to us. That is not to say that our hearts don t get broken, our bodies don t get mangled, our patience doesn t get stretched to a breaking point, or any number of other bad things happening in our life is a good thing. But it does mean that once we find our way through the difficulty and come out on the other side, we can look back and discover a deeper understanding of ourselves, our family/friends and the world in general. Our Club has gone through some difficult challenges this year. As your Board members worked through them, I saw the people that were selected to represent you work diligently through them and watched as they became more confident individuals with a greater understanding of themselves and their responsibility to you, the Membership. I respect their ability to face a challenge, and to know that as a team, we can and will find a solution that will help our Club grow and become a better place for everyone. Now, it is my privilege and honor on behalf of your Board, to wish you a happy and safe holiday. May your Christmas be filled with happiness and love, and the joy of giving and acceptance be imprinted on your heart forever. -PJ GREENWALD LL EDITOR Julie Maiorano 1

ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley USTA Certified Official National Hard Courts Tournament Referee Dear Ump, During League play one of our players hat fell off as she hit the ball, although the opponent said hat as she struck the ball both teams continued play without further comment, and our team won the point. A discussion ensued in which both teams wondered what the correct call should be. I stepped in and said since the opponent played the ball that it was our point, stating she should not have hit the ball, but should have called a take over TY Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters! Dear TY, You are correct; Once the opponents continued play the hat became part of the court, also if during play the ball hits the hat the ball is still in play. In this instance your team can not call a let for their hat. Here are a couple of USTA Comments to clarify: Comment 24.3 If a players hat fall off during the point, may the opponent stop play and claim the point? A. No but the opponent s immediate request for a let should be granted. A let should not be granted after the point nor should a request from the player who lost the hat. Comment 24.2 What happens if the ball hits a player s hat that landed on the court earlier in the point? The ball remains in play because the opponent did not ask for a let. When play continued after the hat landed on the court, the hat became a part of the court. Therefore when a ball hits the hat, it is treated in the same manner as if the ball had hit the court. The Ump Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected USTA official. He has years of experience in the Southern California area, including college tournaments. 6

What is the Public Court and How is it Used? RPTC has an agreement with the City to keep one court available to the public (non-members). To use this court, nonmembers must first come into the office to sign in and pay the $5 per person, per hour fee. First come, first served. No reservations. RPTC members wishing to use this court must sign in at the office. If a non-member requests the court, the RPTC member must give up the court or pay the fee, in which case the non-member waits for his/her turn. 9

If your membership dues were due in November or December, you re late! (Please include a $25 late fee) Remember to send in your membership dues on time to avoid late fees! Please attach your renewal form. Thanks! RPTC STAFF All members are to be walking off the courts by 9:40pm. For safety reasons, members are not to remain on their court or the patios at the very second the timed court lights flick off at 9:45pm. The Monitors are closing the office at 9:30pm and concentrating on getting all members and guests packed up and walking off the courts and patios by 9:40pm. Some burned out parking lot lights make the surrounding facility and stairs dark after court lights go out. Thank you to all members who willingly comply with the monitors at this last hour. 10
COURT USAGE POLICY!!!!!!! 5. RESERVATION INTERVALS PLEASE READ a) Multiple reservations in one day require at least two (2) hours between the end of one reservation and the start of the next one. Valid reservations may be split between different courts if one court is not available for a match. b) Members may NOT book courts back-to-back (i.e. with less than a two-hour gap) under different names for what is essentially one match (e.g. Player 1 books a court for 1.5 hours, and Player 2 books the same court for another hour immediately before or after, and then Player 1 and Player 2 play a singles match for two (2) hours. GUEST FEES ARE $8.00 It is the member s responsibility (juniors and adults) to come into the office to pay the guest fees BEFORE taking the court. Don t wait for the monitor. Don t ask if you can pay after your play. Pay your guest fees before you begin playing. Membership Cards When joining RPTC, each family member is issued a membership card. The RPTC Standing Rule for membership cards states that cards must be visibly available for the monitor to inspect. Be prepared to show membership cards for every family member when using the court. If the cards are not visible at the time of inspection, the monitor will need to interrupt play. Remember, membership cards are non-transferable. Anyone who has lost their membership card is responsible for obtaining a new card from the office and paying the $5 replacement fee. When paying your renewal fee, you will be given stickers for your cards, rather than new" cards. RPTC STAFF 11
POLICY REGARDING LATE AND NO-SHOW SUSPENSIONS The Staff is still recording NO SHOWS weekly. Monitors are required to document every court reservation. They must document who was on the court, that cards were checked and guest fees are paid. Courts that are considered Late Cancellation or No Show are part of the documentation. Monitors cannot excuse a late cancellation or no show or any court violation. There is a process that must be followed that ensures the rules are enforced fairly to all members. If you are late arriving or move to another court, it is your responsibility to find the Monitor on duty and inform him so that you are not marked as a NO SHOW. Note: Members who are suspended from reserving courts may use the courts with no other restriction other than they cannot reserve a court until their reservation suspension has ended. Please no calls to the office as the office staff does not have the authority to reverse a no show penalty. You may questions, requests or comments to: office@rptctennis.com. Infraction **NO SHOW: Member books court, fails to cancel and does not show up to play at the scheduled time. LATE CANCELLATION: Cancels within 4-hours before scheduled court reservation. TIMELY CANCELLATION: Cancels on-line or by phone to the office prior to 4 hours before court reservation time (may leave a message for monitor). Consequences/Procedure Member will immediately lose all reservation privileges for sixty (60) days. No exceptions. 1 st offense: the telephone call to the office will be your reminder of the procedure (essentially a warning). 2nd offense within a 30-day period: Member will lose all reservation privileges for thirty (30) days. No consequences. Reminder of Additional Reservation Rules The name on the reservation must match the player on the court. If a Player who books a court is not on the court they are a no show. If you are at the club and are not on your reserved court you should communicate with the monitor. Members may not book courts back-to-back (i.e. with less than a 2-hour gap) under different names for what is essentially one match (e.g. Player 1 books a court for 1.5 hours, and Player 2 books the same court for another hour immediately before or after, and then Player 1 and Player 2 play a match for 2.5 hours). Also, regarding the above rule, keep in mind, player B could risk being a NO SHOW if the players finished their match in time and never took the additional reserved court. RPTC has a no tolerance policy for NO SHOW, it's an automatic, without warning, 60 day scheduling suspension. If you show up late, let the monitor know so you won t be marked as a No Show. 12
