Rancho Peñasquitos Tennis Center Volume 30, Number 10 October 2018 Mission Statement To become the leading recreational tennis center in San Diego s North County area, by implementing activities, and providing facilities that cater to the casual, social and competitive tennis needs of people in the local community. 2018/19 BOARD MEMBERS PJ Greenwald, President Dan Scherer, VP Linda Beach, Rec Sec Marty Fellenstein, Treasurer Sharon Gehrke, Membership Norma Garrison Steve Leffler Julie Simone Sabine Schroeder STAFF MANAGEMENT Executive Director, Mike Donahue Club Director, Julie Maiorano Office Manager, Connie Komin LEAGUE COORDINATORS Men s League, Dan Scherer Women s League, Carol Donahue Level Coordinators: AA- Megan Steadman A: Norma Garrison/Pete Sievers BB Barbara Kingston B: Lisa DeVos Junior Team Tennis League Ernie Blando Minh Vo Nick Bennett LL EDITOR Julie Maiorano MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT TENNIS FOR LIFE AS IF we really need another reason to get out on the tennis court, a new study from Denmark, published by Peter Schnohn and colleagues, shows that playing tennis may extend your life by nearly 10 years. It has been well-established that exercise helps you live longer. The study covered 20,000 people, and 8,577 of them were in the study from the early 1990 s to 2017, allowing the authors 25 years of follow up. The bottom line was that compared to a sedentary lifestyle, playing tennis extends one s life expectancy by 9.7 years. While badminton, soccer, cycling swimming, jogging, calisthenics and health club activities provided benefits too, tennis was the clear winner. Short repeated intervals of higher intensity exercise appear to be superior to continuous or moderate intensity physical activity. One possible reason for tennis and soccer doing so well is that these are the ones that required 2 or more people and involve social interaction. Belonging to a group that meets regularly and promotes a sense of support, trust and commonality has been shown to contribute to a sense of wellbeing and improved long-term health. I also read a another study completed by Oxford University in Finland and Australia wherein 80,000 people were studied over a period of years to find out if certain sports protected them against early death. It found that people who played racquet sports regularly were the least likely to die over the study period, reducing their individual risk by 47% compared to people who did no exercise. Swimming reduced the chance of death by 28%, aerobics by 27% and cyclist by 15%. Yet team sports like football, baseball etc. appeared to have no impact on extending ones life. The study stated that the recommended weekly physical activity quota for adults is a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise. It is thought that racquet sports not only offer physiological benefits, but also offer additional mental health and social benefits perhaps unique to these sports. These scientists came to the same conclusion--- the difference may lie in the social aspect which goes alongside sports like tennis, which often involve clubs and organized activities outside of the game. It means that people often have larger social networks and tend to keep up activities into later life, both of which are proven to be good for ones health. In contrast, members of organized team sports often do not move onto a new sport once their teams disband for various reasons. Instead, they become spectators rather than participants in their chosen activity. I believe that for most people, the motivation to engage in sport-related physical activity is, and should remain, enjoyment of the sport, and the camaraderie that is linked to the game. My conclusion? Being a member of RPTC is not only fun but good for your health. So, keep up the good work by getting out there on the courts! Enjoy all of our league activities and participate in our extensive offering of year-round social events! 1

ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley USTA Certified Official National Hard Courts Tournament Referee After being approached by numerous club members regarding time in Tennis, and in view of recent changes particularly in Grand Slam events, some information. Tennis is one of the most timed sports, from the time you arrive on the court you are on the clock. Every official has a stop watch or a timer, From the warm up to the time you start, time between points, time on change overs, time at the end of a set, time on authorized breaks, medical time outs, match delay times. And on and on Click Click Click! An overview of USTA Rules of Tennis (these are the rules that are used in our local tournaments and used as reference in League matches) As a principle, play should be continuous, from the time the match starts (when the first service of the match is put in play) until the match finishes. Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in upcoming LobLetters! Between points, a maximum of 20 seconds is allowed. When the players change ends at the end of a game, a maximum of 90 seconds are allowed. However after the first game of each set and during a tie-break game, play shall be continuous and the players change ends without a rest. At the end of each set there shall be a set break of a maximum of 120 seconds. Warm ups shall be a maximum of 5 minutes starting immediately after the coin toss, unless otherwise decided by event organizers. Here in San Diego, usually 7 10 minutes. ITF (Professional Tennis) Grand Slam Board approves rule changes for Novak Djokovic played out an epic against Rafal Nadal in the Australian Open 2012 final, a match that, it was reported, would have lasted 70 minutes less had both players observed the time limit between points. Technically there was already a time limit in place: players at Grand Slam events were given only 20 seconds between points (25 seconds at other tour events). But that clock was only seen by the chair umpire and the rule was rarely, if ever, enforced, especially against top players. The Grand Slam Board (GSB) completed two days of meetings in London November 15-16, 2017 the results of which are outlined in this press release. It was Unanimously agreed to support 2018 Australian Open s application to the ITF for a waiver of the 20 seconds between points required by the Rules of Tennis, in order to allow for enforcement of a strict 25 seconds utilizing a serve/shot clock system in line with that trialed at the 2017 US Open. The timing of the pre-match warm-up will be strictly enforced (1 minute after walk-on to be ready for the pre-match meeting, followed by 5 minute warm-up, then 1 minute to be ready to start the match). Violation of this timing may subject a player to a fine up to $20,000. Note: Mike Kelley, long time member of RPTC, is a highly respected USTA official. He has years of experience in the Southern California area, including college tournaments. 6

All members are to be walking off the courts by 9:40pm. For safety reasons, members are not to remain on their court or the patios at the very second the timed court lights flick off at 9:45pm. The Monitors are closing the office at 9:30pm and concentrating on getting all members and guests packed up and walking off the courts and patios by 9:40pm. Some burned out parking lot lights make the surrounding facility and stairs dark after court lights go out. Thank you to all members who willingly comply with the monitors at this last hour. (Please include a $25 late fee) Remember to send in your membership dues on time to avoid late fees! Thanks! RPTC STAFF A Note About On-Line Reservations When making an online reservation, always refresh the page and check to make sure your reservation is correct. If your opponent or group makes duplicate reservations, please delete the unwanted reservation(s) immediately or at least within 1 hour so that others may reserve. League Captains, please check your home court reservations at least 4 days before each home match. Members may NOT use outside coaches to teach on RPTC courts. This includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, family friends, etc. Violation can result in loss of membership. 8

COURT USAGE POLICY!!!!!!! 5. RESERVATION INTERVALS PLEASE READ a) Multiple reservations in one day require at least two (2) hours between the end of one reservation and the start of the next one. Valid reservations may be split between different courts if one court is not available for a match. b) Members may NOT book courts back-to-back (i.e. with less than a two-hour gap) under different names for what is essentially one match (e.g. Player 1 books a court for 1.5 hours, and Player 2 books the same court for another hour immediately before or after, and then Player 1 and Player 2 play a singles match for two (2) hours. GUEST FEES ARE $8.00 It is the member s responsibility (juniors and adults) to come into the office to pay the guest fees BEFORE taking the court. Don t wait for the monitor. Don t ask if you can pay after your play. Pay your guest fees before you begin playing. Membership Cards When joining RPTC, each family member is issued a membership card. The RPTC Standing Rule for membership cards states that cards must be visibly available for the monitor to inspect. Be prepared to show membership cards for every family member when using the court. If the cards are not visible at the time of inspection, the monitor will need to interrupt play. Remember, membership cards are non-transferable. Anyone who has lost their membership card is responsible for obtaining a new card from the office and paying the $5 replacement fee. When paying your renewal fee, you will be given stickers for your cards, rather than new" cards. RPTC STAFF 9

POLICY REGARDING LATE AND NO-SHOW SUSPENSIONS The Staff is still recording NO SHOWS weekly. Monitors are required to document every court reservation. They must document who was on the court, that cards were checked and guest fees are paid. Courts that are considered Late Cancellation or No Show are part of the documentation. Monitors cannot excuse a late cancellation or no show or any court violation. There is a process that must be followed that ensures the rules are enforced fairly to all members. If you are late arriving or move to another court, it is your responsibility to find the Monitor on duty and inform him so that you are not marked as a NO SHOW. Note: Members who are suspended from reserving courts may use the courts with no other restriction other than they cannot reserve a court until their reservation suspension has ended. Please no calls to the office as the office staff does not have the authority to reverse a no show penalty. You may questions, requests or comments to: office@rptctennis.com. Infraction **NO SHOW: Member books court, fails to cancel and does not show up to play at the scheduled time. LATE CANCELLATION: Cancels within 4-hours before scheduled court reservation. TIMELY CANCELLATION: Cancels on-line or by phone to the office prior to 4 hours before court reservation time (may leave a message for monitor). Consequences/Procedure Member will immediately lose all reservation privileges for sixty (60) days. No exceptions. 1 st offense: the telephone call to the office will be your reminder of the procedure (essentially a warning). 2nd offense within a 30-day period: Member will lose all reservation privileges for thirty (30) days. No consequences. Reminder of Additional Reservation Rules The name on the reservation must match the player on the court. If a Player who books a court is not on the court they are a no show. If you are at the club and are not on your reserved court you should communicate with the monitor. Members may not book courts back-to-back (i.e. with less than a 2-hour gap) under different names for what is essentially one match (e.g. Player 1 books a court for 1.5 hours, and Player 2 books the same court for another hour immediately before or after, and then Player 1 and Player 2 play a match for 2.5 hours). Also, regarding the above rule, keep in mind, player B could risk being a NO SHOW if the players finished their match in time and never took the additional reserved court. RPTC has a no tolerance policy for NO SHOW, it's an automatic, without warning, 60 day scheduling suspension. If you show up late, let the monitor know so you won t be marked as a No Show. 10

Board President PJ Greenwald, team captain Jeff Greenwald and an assembled team of their friends traveled to Irvine last week to compete in the World Team Tennis (WTT) National Qualifier Tournament. Based on the team's results, the Greenwald-led team has advanced to the WTT National Finals on November 2-4. This will be the Greenwald's sixth trip to WTT Nationals. The main draw for the Super Senior 3.5 division was insufficient, so the Tournament Director merged Greenwald's team into the advanced 4.0 division. The Greenwald's "You Cannot Be Serious" team wreaked hovoc in the 4.0 division, taking the first team into overtime, eventually falling by only two games. Play continued through Saturday, and on Sunday, Greenwald's team found themselves in the finals match against the eventual 4.0 division winner. Jeff Greenwald reported that the highlight of the tournament was playing the 4.0 division champion and taking their #1 line into a tiebreaker in the final match. "We are excited to advance to Nationals again", Jeff said. 12

Solomon Liu and Pam Seggerman made the finals at the 2018 San Diego District Championships before falling 5-7, 5-7 in a very dramatic, crowd-pleasing match. Pam is the mom of Ryan (#1 singles player for Princeton), who won the RPTC Men's Open division last month. 13
