Carol and Julie were very helpful and hard working on our board of directors for 4 years.

She works tirelessly during the tournaments and especially before fielding time requests and questions. And recently she s stepped up to help with our ladies league coordination.

She has been a great part of the board both knowledgeable and conscientious. She also spends hours and hours volunteering for our tournaments and giving up many Summer weekends. to their service.

Carol and Julie were very helpful and hard working on our board of directors for 4 years. Carol has worked on our website and installed our new online scheduling system which was a big improvement for us. She works tirelessly during the tournaments and especially before fielding time requests and questions. And recently she s stepped up to help with our ladies league coordination. Julie has always been a great volunteer. She puts in hours of work to organize a very active ladies league program. It takes a lot of her time and we really appreciate it. She has been a great part of the board both knowledgeable and conscientious. She also spends hours and hours volunteering for our tournaments and giving up many Summer weekends. to their service. Being a board member is a volunteer position with a great deal of responsibility. They will be planning for the future, ensuring appropriate maintenance, dealing with membership issues and making tough decisions. If you see them on the courts let them know your great ideas and suggestions and be sure to thank them for their time and service. We will really miss Carol and Julie.but they won t be far as they will be active volunteers with the leagues even when they aren t on the board. Thanks so much Carol and Julie! 2

We will need to be careful not to flush and unflushables because it will continue to block up. Reservations. Please remember to reserve only the time you need. We ve noticed many players booking 2 hours to play singles. Since doubles in the default be careful to switch to singles or practice. If you are playing an official league match you may book 2 hours for singles but be sure and check in with the monitor for a guest pass and provide a roster list. We ve collected quite a bit of lost and found items.if you think you ve lost anything be sure and check in the office. We will be donating the items July 20. Ump Kelley Dear Ump, I was playing a doubles match and during a rather long rally I hit a ball and as I did my racquet flew out of my hand hit the net and fell on the other side close to the net, the opponent played the ball but hit it into the net and then claimed a let, I said we felt we had won the point because they played the ball. Who was correct? Neither side was correct, it is not a let you lost the point as soon as your racquet struck the net while the ball was in play, in addition even if your racquet had not hit the net but landed on the opponents side while the ball was in play you lost the point. ITF Rules of Tennis 24.g. The player loses the point if the player s racquet whether in the player s hand or not touches the net, net posts/singles sticks, cord, strap or band or the opponent s court at any time while the ball is in play. Ump Kelley Dear Ump, the USTA as follows: I have a rules question for you. Last week one of our singles matches went for 4 hours. Needless to say, they were both getting tired and forgetting the scores. Our player felt she gave away a lot of points because her opponent would demand that she describe each of the previous points in order to override her own recollection. Our player finally stood her ground sometime in the third set and didn't give in to the other player's incorrect recollections. After the match, I suggested that she probably could have requested a linesman to help them keep track of the scores, especially since it was an increasing point of contention between them during the match. Was I correct? As I recall there is a rule in the league that allows for the captain to request linespeople if they feel it is needed. A long match and difficulty keeping the score would certainly qualify. Submit your Ask the Ump questions to office@rptctennis.com then look for the reply in the upcoming Lob- Letter I do not have a copy of the league rules however they should follow Tennis is a game that requires cooperation and courtesy from all participants. The server shall announce the game score before the first point of the game and the point score before each subsequent point of the game. Disputes over the score shall be resolved by using one of the following methods, which are in order of preference: count all points and games agreed upon by the players and replay only the disputed points or games. Play from a score mutually agreeable to all players. Spin a racket or toss a coin. Sounds like what they are doing is stalling which is against The Code So in my opinion yes your captain needs to stop play and tell the other captain that a score keeper is needed, everyone would be happier and able to concentrate on the match. 5 Tony s Summer Camp Tony s summer camp is scheduled again this summer. It s not to late to join in on the fun. June 14 - August 20 Camp runs Monday thru Friday from 11:30-3:00 pm Kids of all ages and at every level of play will come out every day and enjoy instructional drills, competitive games, and a lot of fun tennis. The work hard to earn daily points and win prizes. Every year this is a great program that incorporates exercise and fun under the sun playing our favorite sport, tennis. 7 ATTENTION MEN S OPEN PLAY PLAYERS: Ever wonder how your game might change if you had to play with an old-school wooden racquet? Could you still deliver blistering serves? Drive your groundies deep to the corner? Put away some crisp volleys? You can find out -- go out to the garage and dig out your old wooden racquet, dust it if you want, and bring it to Men s Day on Saturday, July 31. it off, restring The players using wooden racquets will congregate towards courts 5 and 6 (and 7, if needed). We ll use as many courts as needed e.g if we have 8 players, we use two courts. If we have 12 players, we use 3 courts, etc. The idea is that you are most likely the same players would be playing men s day anyhow, so no extra courts are consumed and we are not infringing on anyone else s playing time. We start at 7am, as usual, and go as long as players are having fun. Feel free to switch back to graphite racquets whenever you want We would play with the usual men s day rules this is not a tournament, just a normal men s day but with wood rackets. If you re not into it and prefer to stay with your graphite racquets no problem the graphite players will have equal access to courts using standard Men s Day protocol. If you want to have your wood racquet restrung: both Ray s Tennis (in Hillcrest) and Just Tennis (in Scripps Ranch) have confirmed that they can string the old-style wood racquets. In addition, if you want to participate but no longer possess a wood racquet, Just Tennis will loan you one.
